I am looking into erasing all the information on my HD and re-installing the OS. Any suggestions? I'm no good with this stuff and I have 9 toes. I also need a hug. Any help would be great.

As far as I know, DBAN (http://dban.sourceforge.net/) can do this. Check if the documentation on the site is enough for you to get this done.

If you are trying to "wipe" your Hard Drive then DBAN is great and simple. If your just trying to reinstall your OS then DBAN is unnecessary. What OS are you trying to reinstall?

no matter what OS he's trying to install (i would guess he's gonna install XP), they all have stuff built in to the setup to format your HD...DBAN is great, but only if you need/want to securely delete all your data...very few people really need to do this and it takes a LONG time

Active@ Kill Disk (http://www.killdisk.com/) is also a very good HD wiping utility.

Ubuntu's installation will give you the option to format over your old OS so you really don't need to do any prep on your HD to install it.

I use a plain W98 Startup disk alot to format with. What I have found is faster though is DBAN, and when it starts, type in "quick" and it does a quick format. Never heard of killdisk, but I will check it out for sure. I love toolbox applications.

Hey, good luck! I hope all goes well with your installation. Linux is tons of fun if you ask me -- but thats probably because i'm still learning new things about it almost every time i boot up, haha.
