Happy Thanksgiving, people.
What are we thankful for this year?
Me, I'm thankful that back in the Fall I parted ways with my tonsils. I'd decided to enjoy a classic recovery. Ice cream and comic books. Over the past few years I'd been reading trades off and on. But in preparation for the surgery I decided to pick up a whole stack of things to read. Ultimate Spider-Man, New Avengers, a little Batman. Runaways. And this led me to iFanboy, and eventually the forums. And few days have passed where I haven't talked nonsense over with you folks. There would be no Fuzzy Typewriter, and I can think of a couple of other developments that wouldn't have been possible otherwise.
So this year I'm thankful for you guys. All the recommendations, advice, and laughs.
Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday weekend.

First I want to say OH YEAHHHHHHHH!
I'm thankful for porn, liquor, my chlidren, and chilly November rain.

I'm thankful that this rotten year is almost over and for socks.
It was almost 60 when I got up this morning, it is now 45 and raining. It's being predicted that it will be in the 30s with snow before nightfall. I can't wait for Star Trekie weather modifying things.

Z-Cult FM got a cease and desist.
what's that?
zcultfm was a comic torrent site
It was like a whole thing, you had to know people who'd tell you where the trackers were and the like. I think they tried to keep it small.

Z-Cult FM = the Oink of Comic Book downloads?
I hate that Demonoid went down. Got a lot of good BBC shows off there with great speeds. Now I have to go elsewhere and the speed isn't nearly as good. Le sigh.
If I actually used BT (;)), I'd have been really annoyed about the demonoid thing.

IF I actually used anything like BT, I'd imagine it would constantly crash my computer no matter what program I'd imaginarily use... You know if, and all.
I've heard that uTorrent probably wouldn't.

Back into the spirit of the thread title...
Looking over this past year, I actually have a lot of things to be thankful for.
This time last year...
- My kick-ass boss had just been transferred
- I was in fear of being one of the people the New Boss was going to Cull,
- I had just found out that the House I was in the process of getting ready to rent, wasn't on the market anymore because of some "family issues" the landlord was having.
- All of that dead-end, what am I doing with my life had been compounded with the fact that I was turning 25, and for some reason I was taking it really hard.
THIS YEAR:
- I quit my old job, and within an hour of giving my notice, My old Kick-ass boss called me. She offered me a job.
- The new Job pays more, less stressful, I get pretty much free-reign, and I got a schedule that is Ten times better then anything else I've ever worked.
- A friend of mine and I are looking for Apartments/houses now, with hopes of moving in sometime after January.
- I've lived almost a full year at 25, and it's no big woop.
-Plus I've discovered this place, which pretty much goes against 75% of the Internet Stereotypes. From it I've been spurred on to go back to drawing and using my creative side, that I haven't really tapped into in almost 5 years.
-OH and it's a beautiful 60 degrees and Sunny outside.

I've heard that uTorrent probably wouldn't.
I'd imagine I would have already tried that with the same results.
Hypothetically speaking, if you were having that problem and if you were behind a network, I'd(hypothetically) check portforward.com.
Hypothetically, I wouldn't be behind any network.
I'd think that the programs may have worked and started to possibly download files, but without fail, about half way in, the program may crash my computer.
If I were ever to try it, I'd have probably given up on that route and instead turned my eyes towards things like rapidshare.com or something similar.

Nope.
There would be no reason for it to happen. That's mainly why I think the Fake me probably would have just said "oh well" and taken to a different route for his EVIL, evil ways.

Usually when people have problems with torrent clients- it's either poor configuration on their part or some software conflict with their machine.
The only torrent client that crashed on me constantly was Azureus on my Macbook. But that was minor. Other then that it's smooth sailing on the pirate ship for me; Windows, Linux and Mac.

Peper's right, I've really got to say how much I truly am thankful for the forums. I've changed a ton in the past five months, and I think for the better. I read more, comics and other-wise, I'm generally happier (I won't go into the details, because it seems tacky, but you guys have put my therapist out of work... Or one of hundreds of clients), and I think just generally a better guy. It's been fun, and hopefully will be for a long time. Hope it lasts, and all that sappy junk.
I'm also thankful for lasagna. It's awesome.

From Serj the site op from Z Cult FM:
Ok news update, home from work and just had a cup of tea.... more to come soon.
jk.
We got legal letters from both Marvel and DC Comics who have been working together to send us these legal threats. We are currently dealing with the legal issues and they have given us 3 days before they are forced to take anymore action..
Z-Cult FM website was put offline last night by me (no one else) after I got the email while in work and issued a code red alert (we have drills also 5 times a year). We decide putting the site offline was best course of action to analyse the situation and decide our best course of action. We have confirmed one of the legal letters is 100% from DC Comics when a phone call was made to DC Comics who confirmed the email and its contents. As of today we was unable to contact Marvel and we are trying again tomorrow just to 100% confirm it.
Today we decided it was time to bring site back online but without the torrent and download sections. One of Marvels demands was we take down Z-Cult FM for good but we will never let the main Z-Cult FM site die even if that means torrent free.
We are currently deciding our future and working on it as we speak. We will do our best to keep everyone happy but our future decissions might cause some of our users to think we have given in, but this isn't the case, we are just currently working through this situation and taking the best course of action to keep the site up and our staff safe.
What can you do? All we require from our users is support. Kind words and hugs will be fine. Do not cause any trouble that will give Z-Cult FM a bad name. If you think the publishers were wrong please express it here as its your right to protect but I do not want Z-Cult FM's name dragged through mud because of some users actions which could occur if people decide more extreme protests are required.
Keep checking back and we will be sure to update everyone with latest news. Be sure to visit our chat room if you have any questions or want to talk to me or other Z-Cult FM staff.
Do not believe any rumors as we have not spoken to any news sites, such as newsarama, so any news sites have are just guesses. We have facts and will give you these facts. We do seem to have spies thou such as some news sites snooping in our IRC chat room :-p

Not a college party. I mean it was while I was in college, but it was just a small gathering of friends from high school. It's the drunkest I've ever been. When I get intoxicated I get...prolific. There are napkins out there with some really bizarre stories on them. Five minutes before this picture was taken I was having an argument about the homeowner's basement shower being a broken teleportation device. The red cup is actually filled with water. They're trying to sober me up. Instead, I'm blowing air into the water and I'm yelling, "I am the god Poseidon!" No lie.
Cautionary tale indeed, kids. I like to keep the picture around to remind me to not overdo it.

Haha, I read the first sentence of that and was preparing to type, "Where is the Wnedy's!!!!????" Hahaha.
That's probably the most tame story of the bunch. Have I ever told you about our trip to AC? Holy shit! It'll take me a bit to write it up. I'll do it in a little while.
So the wife and I went to Atlantic City for the weekend. On Saturday night, we walked to the bar on the beach behind Caesars (can't remember the name). They had a band that seemed to only do covers of songs from the '90s like Hey Jealousy. This is the prime ingredient in the beginning of a night that is not to be forgotten though large parts of it will be.
They closed the beach bar around midnight if I remember correctly. By that point, I had about 10 Coronas in me. We promptly found a rickshaw to take us on a ride to another bar. After a few minutes, we wound up at this REALLY bizarre go-go bar that was about 8 seedy blocks from our hotel.
The go-go bar had these bizarre nudity standards; I blame the people of New Jersey. In any event, after a half dozen more Coronas or so, I can remember throwing quarters at a stripper who was dancing in the center of the bar on a platform. I WAS NOT the only one, so don't look at me that way.
I can recall switching to Jager at that point. After this, I remember doing body shots off of a shot girl. I vaguely remember the other person with me doing the same thing though she swears to this day that I imagined it.
Then, it all goes black for a while. My memory begins to fade back in briefly a few (who knows how many) hours later. The wife and I managed to find an all night McDonalds so that I could get a drink. I'm presently in the midst of kicking a nasty fountain soda addiction. Then, I remember that she fell into a prickly bush and fell asleep. I have no recollection of the events that happened between then (approximately 4:30) and when I woke up (approximately 10:30).
Now, I mentioned that I woke up at 10:30. That kind of sucked because we had to check out at 11. This really was only the half of it though.
I woke up naked as the day I was born. That's not really a huge deal right? I'm staying in a hotel. I'm coming off of a blackout bender. The first thought that goes through my mind is "I HOPE MY CLOTHES ARE IN THE ROOM." I immediately had visions of my naked, drunken ass stumbling through the lobby. It's certainly a viable outcome when you consider the facts.
In any case, a thorough search of the bathroom turned up my underwear. They were in the toilet. Yep, in the toilet. My undershirt and socks were on the balcony. Yep, the balcony. We were on the 9th floor (if you're wondering). My outer shirt was in the television cabinet. Yep, the tv cabinet. My pants were nowhere to be found.
Has that ever happened to you? Have you ever, as a grown man or woman, lost track of your pants and had NO IDEA in the world where you left them or if you'd be arrested just for showing your face in the lobby again? It's a funny story now, but at the time it's decidely not a nice feeling.
More careful searching revealed my pants wrapped up in the comforter under the bed. I was excited; as anyone would be. I was excited until I realized that I had vomited. I had eaten potato skins the day before. Ah, Applebees. Anyway, I hadn't vomited on my pants; I had vomited in my pants. I had bought the pants approximately 20 hours earlier.
So after some quick cleanup, we checked out late and drove home. We got stuck in a 9 hour traffic jam. You've gotta love the Jersey highway systems.
The moral of the story is this: If you've ever been to AC and seen a grown pantless man trying to wake up his wife in a bush then it wasn't me because I know where my pants were after all.

Wow....
That's an interesting story.
I'd love to write a book called "Ode to AC". It would be a collection of all the drunk/horror stories I've had/heard of that mythical place by the sea.
I'm not a big drinker, so sadly I'm the guy that is the straight man to pretty much every story I have. The most recent one involved me keeping a friend from getting beaten up and arrested by cops on the Boardwalk at 3am. Want to know why? He was screaming "PIG" and "I SMELL BACON" at every cop he saw. This turned into me having to literally drag him through the Tropicana by the back of his shirt.
Oh and as a side note, the beach bar you visited behind Caesar's? Its called "The Beach Bar". Inventive, aren't we?

Every third post from you I have to wonder, "How is he still alive?"
I really don't want to pull out my stories, but it's safe to say I'm surprised I'm alive. College parties, and even high school parties on occasion, are pretty out of hand. I amaze myself, some nights.
Edit: That makes me sound like an alcoholic. If and when I drink, I'm fairly tasteful about it, and not out of hand drunk. But that ability has, on occasion, gotten away from me.
Edit of my edit: I would love to tell you about the time, not so long ago, I got blitzed and past out in a friends room. Debby Does Dallas was on TV, and my friend decided it was more fun that the other people he was entertaining. I wrote a page long review of it in the "General Movie Thread". Luckily, my co-ordination was off, and I must have hit preview instead of submit. I can guarantee this was a good thing.

It's a great thing, but sometimes I just like having the ability to say "No, sorry, I can't take care of you tonight"

"Dinosaurs and their World"
It's actually really, really hard. It's like an anatomy class, but at least in regular anatomy you could potentially count your own fingers to answer question 72. There are so many different clades of dinosaur, it's difficult to keep track of who has how many fingers, toes, sacral vertebrae, transverse processes....Lots of memorization. The power point presentation on sauropods I had to study for my exam this past week was 130 slides. And sauropods made up about 20% of the test.
Sorry. Venting.
My professor is really cool. Ken Lacovara. He discovered Paralititan stromi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paralititan), probably one of the largest terrestrial animals ever to walk the earth. So, is evolution an inherently godless theory given these interpretations of scripture? The major argument I've heard against evolution in terms of religion is the idea that humans have always been human. That claiming humans share a common ancestor with apes is cheapening the beauty of God's design.

Well, yes. That's my real argument against reconciling religion and science.
I don't think science undermines faith and I don't think faith needs explanation.
But that being said; some creationist and ID thinkers want to take some parts of Scripture literally and want to stretch the meaning of others.

I have an extremely religious cousin who doesn't believe in dinosaurs, or evolution. I'm not religious, or atheist. You could say I'm still finding out where I fit in. For exactly that reason, I find discussions on stuff like this really interesting.
I think Six brought up a great point that a lot of religious people overlook. Simple, but passed over. Who's to say god didn't orchestrate evolution within those seven days?
Now, I don't mean to offend anyone, I know this is touchy ground, but here's my theory. I think it's a fairly safe bet to say that the general belief is that humans are all working towards some greater good, our success or failure is subjective. If we're working towards a greater god, with some higher power to back us up, then obviously that higher power doesn't create something from nothing, he works at it, no matter how mystical the way. So in the same way a mountain would be built up from a pile of stone, I think it's an alright guess that we could have been built up from a lower species on the alleged evolutionary chain. There's still plot holes in that, I'm sure, but I think there's plot holes in any theory on where we came from at this point.
It's not necassarily the way I believe it happened, but it is something that makes more sense to me than shunning the matter all together. But, it seems this topic has been passed over. I'll finish up.

In my opinion, it's just done out of love. The same way you get homesick being to far from parent's, it's a struggle to be closer, or understand, your god. But that's just my perspective. I always find it best to rationalize matters like this, rather than shrug them off.

Faith doesn't need any explanation or rationalization at all. Science is sorta built on the opposite of that.
I think that's kind of the problem with the debates between the two. Assuming that Science is in a disagreement with Faith, and vice versa, isn't exactly a good way of looking at it.
If you honestly think about it, if God set up the universe to run a certain way, to be govern by certain laws, doesn't that mean that Science itself is a part of faith?
Without getting into it to much, I spent many years as an Atheist, then went down a weird path where I drank some Kool-Aid and became a "Christian". So I have a hard as heck time, trying to be rabid on either side, because I used to be on the other side of the aisle.
Faith doesn't really mean you believe in something even though everything else is telling you it's wrong. Faith is believing in something even though you don't have all the answers, yet everything else you've seen and experienced is in accordance with your basic belief system.

Just that one can't solve the other. If god is a higher power, and a power put there by our faith, then there's obviously a very fantastical element in there. An element that probably won't be solved with the Periodic Table of the Elements.
I do have faith, whether that faith is in god, or a lack of one, but either way, I don't think that any earthly knowledge is going to give me the answers I'm looking for. That's why we have religion. It makes the unsolvable problems in life seem like they're already been solved.

A couple of years ago, a buddy and I snuck into the stadium in Columbia. We ended up in places we very obviously shouldn't have been and made our way out onto the field. It was a really cool experience.
Mizzou won? Sweet! (shows how much I pay attn to college sports)

Well played, Zune. If I weren't already an Apple loyalist that ad would have me seriously considering a Zune. Design like that, coupled with a girl like that...I'm a pushover.
Are the iPod Touch ads getting too minimalist? Too...inorganic? They're sexy (what with the sexy CSS track playing in the background), but they lack the human element of this Zune ad. The whimsy too.

That's cool. Screw tradition, man. Sacred cows + ketchup + slip'n'slide = excellence.
My idea for a wedding is kind of odd. I want to gather everybody together in a centralized location, put them on a bus, and drive them to the secret wedding venue. The roof of my high school english teacher's house or, if he's dead by then, a Wendy's. It's like a flash wedding.

I say thee word.
We had one funny incident when we wanted to keep a tradition. We wanted to not offend the guests. It was going pretty well through cocktail hour. Then we were being announced to Ben Folds' Rockin' The Suburbs. The entire wedding party was announced and we were last. Just after announcing my nearly 80 year old grandparents, we realized that the dj wasn't using the radio version of the song. We realized as the speakers blared "it makes me wanna SCREAM ****KKKKKKKKKKKK".
That wasn't even a bit awkward. Or it really was.

I was pulling a faulty server from the rack and slid my left hand in between the shelves to get at a snagged cable. Cable came free but I pulled the equipment out with both hands hard and fast. A metal stub on the side gashed my left hand from the pinky to the wrist. Like a cut from a box cutter or hobby knife.

Here's my plan. I'm helping her with history and writing her a study guide. Halfway through the guide I'm going to bury this:
Okay. I really like you, and if you’ve made it this far I guess it’s a sign or something and I honestly don’t know what to say. If you’re uninterested then just ignore this and keep reading, if not. Well, I’d like to go to a movie or something. No pressure, this way there's no embarrassment for either of us.
Advice?

I dunno, Six. Just ask her casually if she'd like to go out. No note or big to do. If she says no, just continue treating her as a friend.
The note thing can become awkward.
conorkilpatrick
11-27-2007, 02:31 AM
Hmmm. How bad for you would it be to say that to her face?
I would advise against that.
1. If she does like dudes, she'll probably respect you more for having the courage to ask her to her face.
2. If she's not into dudes, it won't work anyway and you could spend the rest of your life wondering if she saw the note because you didn't make an out-front play for her.
3. I think you're a good guy. I'm not busting your balls. However, if I saw this phrase "Okay. I really like you, and if you?ve made it this far I guess it?s a sign or something and I honestly don?t know what to say." hidden in a note it might freak me out a bit.

Pretty bad if her reason's that she's gay
I don't know, I feel like I should just give up, but I really like her and I feel some sort of reciprocation but I could be totally wrong. The fact that there's only 37 people in my grade and 220 in my school means that if it's done in the open that the entire student body will know in a day

Oh no, many people may not know what you're going through from a privacy standpoint, but I do. I graduated in a class of 26. I get where you're coming from. However, having been through all of this already, I can tell you that note=bad almost always.
Also, even if the note thing were the best option, hiding it is terrible. It shows a lack of confiidence and it's kind of weaselly/passive aggressive. I'm not attacking you, I'm just trying to show you how she might view it. Think of how awkward it makes it for her. How does she respond whether it's yes or no? You see, she has to do the same worrying thing that you're doing now. How do I bring it up? Should I write a note? Should I lie to him or tell him it's because I'm not into guys? Can I trust him with that information? It is a really small school and teenagers can be really mean.
You get what I'm saying right? I'm just trying to help. None of this was meant to be mean. I just want to make sure that you don't get the wrong idea.

I think I've mentioned before an older guy at my work who's a huge batman fan. Anyway, he's supposedely fallen on hard times and needed gas money to make his sale calls today, so he sold me a big box that's basically a Batman grab bag. It's a handful of trades, a bunch of old issues of Detective Comics & Batman, early arcs of Nightwing, most of Jeph Loeb's run on Superman/Batman, a few random mini series I've never heard of and for some reason something called "Barker the Beagleman". He wanted 40 bucks when he called ahead, but took (without complaint) the money I had on me at the time... 13 bucks. Desperate people rock.
(Don't feel bad for him he told me a lot of these were extra copies he'd bought because "you never know what issue's going to hit it big". Plus he's a perv and a sheister.)

Still got to pity the poor bastard. Even if he's a speculator! ;)

There's a cabinet above my desk at home. It's really a bank of four cupboards from Ikea. Really solid. One fell today. On me. It was filled with old VHS tapes. I'm actually lucky to be alive. If it had landed directly on my head it would have split my head open. Instead, it landed on my chest and forced me backwards into my bed, which runs parallel to my desk. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Just stayed there under the cabinet for a good 5 minutes trying to calm down.
It was almost limitless paper in a Paperless world today...

Darn, Pol! Glad to hear you surived, man.
Labor split his hand yesterday, you were nearly Wicked Witched by a falling cabinet.... WHOSE NEXT???
Yeah, you're being too cold Becca
I don't really think she's being cold. Sometimes it's hard to have pity for someone if they brought an entire situation on themselves.
We don't know the full story so it's easy for us to be objective.

What an insult among our kind. Harsh words, Kahuna.

I don't think it's possible to be cold enough to speculators. Especially pervy ones.

Hit on the nose. Like I said he's a sheister. He cheated several people in the office out of their money on this scheme for cheap GPS's. He borrows money from people all the time and never repays them, even though he's making good money in comparison to some of the other reps (our system is very transparent). He owes hundreds of dollars all over the office. What goes around comes around eh?
Plus. Perv. He hits on me and the other girls all the time.
So I get Batman. Hooray!
