Hey everyone,

I am wanting to get back into reading comics i am looking for some advice.

I am looking for some recommedations on the best graphic novel and best ongoing series of all time that is available to buy today, i used to like all the marvel comics like Spiderman, X-Men etc.

I have also been watching the podcast trying to get some insperation from it but wanted to ask here.

Thanks
Richard

Best of all time is the most subjective opinion ever. What else do you like besides Spider-Man? What are your favorite movies, books, TV shows?

How would you feel about reading trades instead of issues? Astonishing X-Men has been well received by most, but Whedon's run only has one more issue to go. I'd recommend picking up the trades (the first one is called "gifted")

Also, if you want to read some Marvel stuff without diving right into the middle of the continuity morass, I recommend books like Alias and Runaways, which take place in the Marvel U, but tend to not get too caught up in it.

Although there's a lot of it, I'd recommend Ultimate Spider-man. It's not quite Spider-man as the "normal" universe would put him, but it's really good and really contained, whereas the normal universe is kinda Spider-man up in the air right now...

Astonishing's also really good because of the self-containment.

That's a big buzzword in my recommendations, I guess...

I also recently got back into comics and some of my favorite superhero stories that I've discovered are Jeph Loeb & Tim Sales's Marvel "colors" series.

Hulk: Grey
Spiderman: Blue
Daredevil: Yellow

I found it really hard to jump in to most superhero books, but from what I understand all of these are out of continuity... so they were really easy to catch onto and they are all wonderfully written and beautifully drawn.

Spider-man Blue was SO good...

As far as mainstream Superhero books, these would be the two I'd recommend.

In that same vein I think we'd all be remiss to not recommend "Invincible". Not having been around for Spider-man the first time around, I really think that Invincible captures the emotions, and the story telling fun that made Spider-man so popular in the first place. It's an absolutely spectacular read, and if you're into Spidey, I can't recommend Invincible highly enough.

So Robert Kirkman pays you now too? ;)

I recently got back into comics, almost 1 year now. If you just want to jump it, pick up anything you are interested and use resources like Wikipedia and iFanboy to help understand whats going on. If you want to read back some and play catch up (which is what I did), start at the issues right after Civil War for Marvel or One Year Later with DC. Most books are only a trade or two away from being current from those two events.

I get what I can where I can. I gotta put food on the table after all.

We really need a sticky pointing to all the recommendation threads and/or guidelines for getting recommendations. Favorite movies, books, past comics, etc.

I just got back into comics too, but based on your small list of what you read, I think we have totally seperate tastes. But Astonishing and Ultimate are definitely solid books, so if that's your kind of thing, I'd start there.

I find The Ultimates to be really popular among people who aren't realy comic book fans but like comic films

Honestly, if there was a sticky, we'd still get this. This is what new users will ask when the come on the site. I figure it's best to take each one individually, that way new folks can feel welcomed by the helpful iFanboy community.

But Conor and I will chat and try to figure something out.

Sure, I get where you guys are coming from.

But can we perhaps have a sticky called; "New to Comics? The iFanboy recommendation thread."

OP has links to the trade review thread and any other threads with a lot of recommendations. A few guidelines in narrowing down the type of comics they (the newbies) are interested in, favorite books, movies, tv shows, art, et cetera.

Maybe a reading list by genre. i.e. "iFanboy's Rough Guide to Comic Book Crime-Noir", with a few popularity recommended books and such. Nothing too strict but something to give newbies a general idea of what's out there.

Newbies can still post in there and get reccos. and we'll cut down on the clutter & redundancy. Because a lot of times we're recommending the same stuff over & over and/or pointing to other recco. threads.

My .02 anyway.

I think the sticky idea is a good idea. I have picked up some comics that I might not have picked up if I didn't read about them here.

Scene: Conor and Josh discussing changes as Ron walks in

Ron: "Hey guys what's going on?"
Conor: "We're trying to figure out what to do with the recommendation threads"
Josh: "Conor thinks we should sticky it, I don't, it could be a good way for each new member of the forums to feel welcomed"
Ron: "Wait, we have forums?"

The guides would be helpful for sure, but that's a lot of work to put on them.

Hello Everyone,

I would firstly like to appologise to anyone that i upset or offended by staeting a thread of this nature, being new to the comics and things i just thought that people might respond and help me out which some did and i am greatful.

Now then, i took some advice and some i didnt i had a look around some sites and had a listed to some podcasts and my first two purchases for this week are Captain America #32 & The New Avengers #36

I am looking forward to reciving these and hope that i can part take in the discussion about next week's releases :)

Once again thankyou and if anyone has any suggestions for future purchases i would be glad to hear them even if i didnt mention them in my initial post i am willing to try everything once

Cheers

I don't think so, no. Lots of other boards do a similar thing.

All one would need to do is link to the appropriate threads. And the forum members fill in the rest.

Crime-Noir? Look at the three most recommended books that fit that bill. Write them down as such...

Crime-Noir?

Criminal
Fell
100 Bullets

Sci-fi?

Fear Agent
Godland
Cassanova

Super easy. Just rough guide to the stuff we recommend a lot. No need to be a genre Nazi over it or get anal. Being a sticky thread, the mods can update the list as we go in the OP.

I'd start one up myself but wouldn't have the power to sticky or update the thread as such.

No, no. It's all good. Happy to help.

We just want to figure out the best and easiest way for newbies to get the comics they might enjoy.
