Running Time: 00:25:24

This week iFanboy calls attention to the great American genre of western comics, in all their horse smelling glory. We've got lawmen and outlaws, gamblers and rustlers, and maybe even a no good, low-down, dirty robot army.

I haven't had a chance to watch the show yet, but can I just say how great the picture on Revision3.com is for this show?

Bravo, Ron, Bravo!

I'm really excited. I've been looking to get into some good Westerns lately, and couldn't think of a whole lot past Jonah Hex. This is what I need. Can't wait to watch.

I've been lovin' on the current Jonah Hex and now it sounds like I would still like the older, so I might pick up the shocase volume too. I've been kinda sorta wanting to try out Loveless for awhile. I have to admit I probably still won't. But now I'm reminded of it at least.

Nice show, gents!
That was probably one of your best openings ever! Ron, that shocked look had me laughing so hard I think I pulled something.

Wow, Ron's really getting on the Vertigo bandwagon lately...Exterminators, Transmet, and now HE'S the one to champion Loveless...? :)

Actually, I was glad to see you guys talk about Loveless, as I think it does read better in trades. I dropped it early on, but picked up the second trade, and thought it worked pretty damn well.

Another western, but very hard to find, is Dusty Star by Andrew Robinson. It also crossed the Western with scifi. It was never collected. I'm not sure the story ever finished. I mostly drool over the images on his site (http://www.nextexitproductions.net/comics/comics.php).

Has anyone read Daisy Kutter?

It's another Steampunk style Western, that I keep meaning to pick up but haven't yet.

Why do Westerns seem to fit so well into the future? I guess the same reason Star Wars fits into the past. Which I also don't know.

Honestly? It makes a lot of sense, in that our imagining of the future and/or outer space is all about discovering new frontiers.

The future is often used to show a place that is untamed, whether it's a newly discovered alien planet or a post-apocalyptic earth. They essentially provide the same landscape as the "Wild West."

How did Roddenberry pitch Star Trek? "Wagon train to the stars" or some such?

It's totally the common sense of discovery and lawlessness.

Exactly. I just wanted to add that the whole Mad Max, Post-apocalyptic Earth thing also works as an analogue to the Western.

It's one of my favorite comics. Kibuishi's (the guy who created the Flight anthology series) art style is fantastic and the story is a lot of fun.

I was disappointed it didn't get a mention in the show.

Western fans should also read Spaghetti Western by Scott Morse, one of my favorite indie creators.

Good to hear that it was worth it! I'm a huge fan of Copper, so I know I'll love the look.

FYI, the collected trade is a smaller, digest sized collection. If you're an art whore, the large-sized original issues may be better for you. Which isn't to say that the collection looks bad. It looks great. Just wanted to give you a heads up.

I am an art whore, but I'm a fan of the digest size! Why must I choose?!

If it's any help, this digest doesn't have any of the problems that I've seen with some of the Marvel ones (text too small to read, dark colors). If I hadn't already read the larger versions, I would have no reason to think it was ever any bigger than digest sized.

Another "new" western that I would like to give props to is Dark Horse's Deadlander. Great first issue. Can't wait for the next.

I have to admit: Deadlander didn't blow me away. I thought it was beautiful to look at, but the first issue didn't really grip me, in terms of narrative.

I just read the Billy the Kid suggestion from the show.
That was a fun read. I wish that someone would pick it up, and make an ongoing out of it! And looking at the covers, I REALLY wish that Powell had actually drawn the book as well.

Once again, Gents, thanks for the suggestion!

I think I saw that there's some Marvel Max book about a zombie from Powell and Hotz out today.

Here it is (http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?id=7583).

Excellent episode. I have been getting into westerns recently. I finally tried Jonah Hex and loved it. Just finished the third trade and picked up the Showcase.

After watching the episode I also picked up and read Loveless and liked it as well and just picked up the second trade this evening.

Has anyone read Streets of Glory, the Avatar western by Garth Ennis. I have not heard much about it and was wondering if it is any good.

I was actually curious about that book. I went back to try to find it, but couldn't find the first issue, so I didn't get it.

With how well Ennis does war stories it could be good although the Avatar brand makes me pause a bit. Westerns don't seem like their style.

I am hoping they will release it as a trade.

The other western that I was wondering about was the Bat Lash mini. The character seemed fairly interesting when he was in Jonah Hex, but paled in comparrison to Hex. I think the first issue is out or will be out soon.
