View Full Version : Tattoos?

So my friends pitched in and got me a gift certificate for a tattoo for my birthday. I don't have any tattoos, but have wanted one for a while. Can't decide what to get though. I was thinking of my logo/signature which is a stylized "JOEL" or, as my name here suggests, a badger, maybe in a northwest style, or kinda tribal. The other thought I had was the word "grace" which is a lovely word in general and the name of my beautiful cat who died this summer at the age of 12. I have had and lost lots of pets in my life, but she was my familiar.

Anyway.

Do you folks have any tattoos? And how did you decide what to get? Why is it significant?

Photos would be cool.

I'll post images of my designs as I do them.

Well OBVIOUSLY you should get 'Revision3' across the top of you back. Maybe 'DIGG LIFE' across the front Tupac-style.

LMAO. Somewhere, in the world, someone has a digg tattoo!

Anyways.... just get a tattoo that you won't regret and that won't look bad when you are an old, saggy man.

I agree with this for the most part, but from personal experience, i can say (like everyone else says) once you get your first tattoo, your addicted, and its hard as hell to stop haha ;)

I currently have 3 tattoos: my first is on the inside of my right wrist, right underneath my watch. Personal design that i drew out shortly after turning 18, means a whole lot to me, but i have never explained it to anyone -- and i doubt i could do it any justice even if i tried to explain it, lol.

Second tattoo is a pentagram on my right calf with symbols for all the elements within the points, using Native American symobls. In the middle is (fittingly,) the word sorrow. Again, thats really hard to explain, and i'll explain via PM if you're really interested, but i don't want to just post it up in a public forum

Third tattoo, is related to my obsessions with spirals... i used to have dread-locks for a couple of years, and when i shaved them off, i decided to get a spiral tattooed on the back of my head.. its a little bit more involved than that, but its all revolving around a spiral, no pun intended :p

No pictures available though, sorry...

I've got the word "Ozzy" in old English style on my upper right arm. With a last name like Osborne, you might as well get used to being called Ozzy.

I want to get something with a tribal design and my wife and daughter's names in it. Just haven't scrounged up the cash for it.

Get something that is meaningful to you, but I personally recommend having it put someplace where it can be hidden if need be. My workplace has it spelled out in the handbook that there are to be no visible tatoos of any kind. Just something to keep in mind....

The other big thing to keep in mind is your own skin tone. For instance, my skin color is closer to transparent than white, so any color I would want stands out. However, my wife is quite a bit darker than I am, so her color choices were down to black and darker black.

Hahaha, sorry, but i've got to hold up on this one. First of all, i don't have a digital camera, and secondly, you're going to think i'm a nut, but i have a pretty intense phobia of having my picture taken in any way...

JOsborne; i definitely got a good laugh when reading that your skin is "closer to transparent" lol :p

Since no one has tattoo's here or they don't want to share, here are mine. Make sure you get something that you can stand for the rest of your life. Sure you can have it removed but it's expensive. I plan on getting another in the coming months along with finishing my doves. :)

Very nice. No, mine just needs touched up so bad I'm embarassed to show it. Besides, once you've since English script, mine really isn't that impressive.

Nice shading on the Mario one. The doves are nice too. Are they your own design? Will they have shading/color, or flat black?

Thanks for sharing.

Anyone else?

Beat ya to it, but actually I'm not saggy. Yet.

And I still have my hair.

Actually, I'm so damn hairy I'm having trouble finding a hairless spot for the tattoo. :p

Here is one of mine, I have another that needs to be reworked, the guy who did it was a total hack. Make sure you see the work of the guy you have do your tat. I have a spot in mine that needs filled in again in this one, I need to get back there. I want more tatoos, just need the cash and picking a design is tough too.

Sweet. At first I thought it was just a cool graphic. Took a minute to read it. Is it a name, or an affirmation?

It is an affirmation of course. :D

As someone with a lot of tattoo work I have to warn against the following:

1) Tribal, it's usually doesn't mean anything and if it does it might not be what you want.
2) Your name... what, you can't remember it?
3) Random symbol. Similar to tribal, you shouldn't get something just because it looks cool
4) Asian characters. Context means a lot and often these mean something other than what they were intended to.

Get one that means something to you. And don't pick something off the flash.

Yeah, there are lots of stories out there of bad experiences with Asian lettering tats. I have 3 right now:

-A tribal design around my right bicep, doesn't mean anything, just looks cool. Tres Frat, I know. =/
-A big fancy "A" on my left bicep since my wife's name is Amy
-My mom's name on my chest over my heart

No they're not my own design. I want to get the doves filled in blue with a red background. I haven't found an artist that I want to do it yet though.

A quick badger sketch I did at work. Will be much more graphic, and go on my tricep.

I'm scared to death of needles, so no tats for me, though I want one.

Anyway, when my mom was pregnant with me, she was in a convenience store and saw this guy she describes as a "hot biker" and he has a tattoo on his arm with a girl's name but an unusual spelling. My mom liked it so much that she used it for my name. (Aria isn't on my birth certificate.)

That Super Mario Bros. 3 tattoo is pretty slick. The doves one needs a lot of work I take it?

Thanks. They say Super Mario Bros. is the gateway game :P As for the doves I'm up in the air on it. I want to get them filled in but then I also like it how it is. If I do it will be a full half sleeve no skin from the wrist to elbow.
