What totally rad instruments do you sick plagues to society play? I play piano and guitar, and suck at both.

I took guitar lessons when I was 9, but i'd forgotten everything. Now i just play for fun and learn using online guitar tabs (http://ultimate-guitar.com/). I really suck though. I can play some Greenday stuff because its really easy power chords.

I sort of play drums but I never practice so I stink at them now. I sing, too. That I'm ok at. :)

I can make sounds on the piano, harmonica and various brass instruments.
They might not be pleasant sounds, but they're several steps above random noise.

WTF is a soprano clarinet?
Anyhooo....I play clarinet (a/Bb), symphony percussion, piano, some guitar, and I'm getting a microKORG synth soon! It's gonna be freakin' awesome!

it's also known as the b-flat or simply clarinet. i don't like that term because the bass and contra-bass clarinets are both pitched in b-flat and that can just get confusing.

I played trumpet and french horn. I also use to sing in acapella and madrigal choirs. Sometimes I would assist on back-up vocals for a friend's band. That was all pre-Anakin though. Playing trumpet with a fussy baby around really doesn't work well.

Ok....I've never heard of it before, but you learn something every day!

I play piano and bass. I'm pretty good on both. I have more fun with my bass, but I'm more technically proficient on the piano.

I play keyboards/synths in a local SF band. I've been playing piano on and off since I was a youngling. I'm teaching myself guitar at the moment; and I definitely want to learn the violin one day. And to whoever is playing the glockenspiel, my friend just got one and I have to say that it's pretty fun to play.

I took somewhere around 9 years of saxophone (tenor) lessons, but haven't played for at least 4 years. Lord knows if I could even squeek out a note any more

piano, bass, drums, some chords on guitar, harmonica (I used a book Patch), synths, computers. been playing for 29 years and I don't even like it that much. all I like doing is playing for fun now, and the occasional dj set/mix.

i own copies of protools, fruityloops, and sonar, so i understand building songs in a computer, but a laptop concert? no thank you. watching people push bottoms does not sound like fun at all.

Some ppl go to concerts to listen. DJ'ing and anything puter/synth related, is pretty boring to look at.

I've seen several bands who use macs durring their concerts. The most recent I saw was the Submarines. There's only 2 members, one played guitar and did vocals, the other sang and played guitar/bells/other random things. They had the computer there for most of their percussion. It doesn't really take anything away from the performance.

but that wouldn't be a "laptop conceit" would it? that would be a live show that incorparates prerecorded music. they might be giants have been doing that for years.

One of the most interesting and awesome shows I've ever been to was Kraftwerk. All they do is stand at their laptops. Still, an experience...

I went to a show a while back where the opening act was Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. It was one guy singing, playing a bit of keyboards and turning dials to set/change some prerecorded loops. I thought it was fantastic but I can see how people might find it extremely boring (a pint of beer helps). I bought a cd of his and it's pretty great as well.

i have played guitar for goin on 11 years now. a buddy of mine actually made a little commercial for his freshman year film class with me rockin out on my Dean guitar. I was in a metal band for about 2 years that disbanded about a year ago due to lack of singers that could sing. i will post our myspace and you can check out the songs though the recordings are the opposite of professional. We basically got a 4 track recorder. Dropped a mic in the center of the room. Recorded the drum track. And then all plugged in our instruments directly to record the other tracks. The song last couple minutes of the song Mindcage is defiantly my favorite of the lot. If you check out any of the songs make it that one. Fairly kick ass solo at the end that is only mildly ****ed up.
myspace band : http://www.myspace.com/becomingapparitions

side note : The music in the vid isn't supposed to look like it's in sync with my playing. Also if you look closely I'm the only one in the video who actually knows hot to play an instrument. (im the fat nerd with the ac/dc shirt) We were rockin out to some white stripe when we made it. And on the myspace band pager there are no vocals on the track due to our problems we had with getting a good singer.

Casiotone is great. But I've never seen him live.
I dunno how much you follow him, but on his latest album he has added some actual strings and percussion on some tracks, and there's another singer, a girl. The new CD is Etiquette, and it's so much better than The First Two Albums.
Dunno if he has a "band" for live shows, now, but at least on the record it's more than just him and his keyboards...

Berklee dropout here.
Piano, clarinet, sax, guitar, ukulele, drums.
To the folks talking about laptop concerts and such, I'm using a rig almost exactly like this one (http://www.heavyliftmusic.com/2005/05/29/18/) for live shows. It allows me to have a huge library of samples and synths on Kontakt and Reason and saves me money since I already had most of the equipment.
