Yes everyone. I just wanted to let you all know that SpiralFrog has launched and it is 100% ad-driven so the music is 100% legal. I just downloaded Apologize by One Republic and everything is working a-okay. I strongly encourage everyone to give this site a visit and support this kind of stuff. Please, this is not spam and this launch has been anticipated for almost 2 years now.

Saying it, doesn't make it so.
This message is just about as spammish as you can get. The only reason I'm not deleting it is because you're a forum member in good standing. However, you might want to tone it down in the future.

I downloaded the manager and it SUPER SMALL and hides in your task bar at the bottom of your screen. Seriously, this site was put up by Universal and it's the REAL DEAL. No knock-off site that gives you ten-million viruses per-download.
EDIT - When I said Universal I meant the record label so think about the possibilities!

Crap, ok, well, kinda sorta free as long as you keep renewing. Yeah, that does stink. But hey, Audacity + SpiralFrog WMA = Ripped DRM. I'm sure there's various other ways to get the DRM off as well such as the "Ramzi" way. :D

Oh well, I'm gonna have to look for a way to rip the DRM off these suckers. Although I don't know why Audacity wouldn't work. It records ANY sound that comes out of your speakers....

I'm going to give this a try on OS X. I doubt many of you use Macs, but I'll see if I can get it working anyways and will post my results.

No, the musicians ARE PAID. Check out the site's FAQ. The money comes from the ads and a decent portion goes to the artists. We're simply stripping off the DRM. :D

LOL, yeah trust me, if I was their spokesman I would have the laptop I've been saving up for. Yeah, it's hard when I said I've waited for 2 years for a site to launch and it finally launches and opens up to everyone and not just a few like it was a couple months ago with the beta/test site. Yeah, I'll admit it, that title was a little bizarre but it was the only way I could get people to check it out because this was really something I wanted to share.

ok i will check it out
a decent portion - who decides what that is is my real question
why can't people just pay a dollar a song ?
you should be allowed a listen or three to decide if you want it
if it is good and you want it why aren't people willing to pay
do you expect your ipods free
(i am NOT berating i really wish i understood - everyone loves music - when it was $20 a cd and you had to buy the whole cd it was one thing - but a dollar for anything ever recorded [ except the beatles ] - that is fair ) - mozart for a dollar - get real here that is incredible -
why not be fair
you will probably get better music as a result
and no i am not all riaa gung ho - they are protecting a exploitative dinosaur - they are wrong too
but between the artist and the consumer
a song for a dollar is fair
fair is better in the long run
for everyone

I understand. K, here is how the site operates to my understanding, first people start using the site, then ad companies start posting ads, people come for the free music thus supporting the posting of ads, ad revenue grows which goes to support the artists. I think that's a pretty decent explanation. Yeah and remember, the songs come with a 30-Day DRM unless ripped off.

I wasn't steppin' on Shadow's nuts. I think this is actually a pretty good find, I was just bemused with the effort they were putting into cracking the DRM. However, I see where Xib is coming from. This would be a good way to get hard to find music.
My only question is this: Isn't it illegal again if you crack the DRM?

I dunno. :D Well, with the 30-Day DRM you get 30 days on your songs and 30 days on your membership. For some reason they want you to renew every 30 days......

When you renew they ask you "questions" I am guessing you clicks ads. The DRM is 60 days. 30 for when you are still a member and another 30 if you don't renew. As long as you keep renewing the drm will be renews another 60 days I am guessing. Too bad the songs only work in WMP unless DRM ripped off it.

Okay, so I'm downloading the new killers CD....and I'm a bit confused. I had to install a download manager, but in order to keep downloading I have to stay on the site? (Aso, I have to download a CD track by track in the manager?)
Theres some kinks that need worked out still, but its not too bad. It will be especially nice getting perfectly tagged tracks with album art already, even if I have to rip me some DRM, haha.
berrex
11-27-2007, 08:49 PM
Stripping the DRM off of these tracks would be illegal. The reason that they're free is because they are loaded with DRM and are ad-supported. But if you're really concerned about supporting your favorite artists, you should do so by attending their concerts and visiting their websites and sending in donations (if they accept them). That's the only sure way to get your money to support the artists themselves, as they hardly make jack off of album sales (that money goes to the labels, with a very, very small portion going to the artists; I would assume that these ads distribute money in a similar fashion).
gi_josh
11-27-2007, 09:05 PM
Whether this is supporting artists and whether stripping DRM is illegal, I could care less. However, this site seems to be a pretty decent way to get free music. The downloading is nice (still don't like that I have to click download for each track) and stripping of the DRM is painless (FairUse4WM works amazingly!)
This is actually simpler than torrents and faster in some cases.

I like the fact that they give you a good 30-40 second preview the downloadable songs. I spent a good 45 minutes just going through the site listening to samples/previews. :D

as a studio engineer and producer(in training) and son of a studio musician i have to agree. as for jesus, i'm sure you have to agree to a TOS in which i'm sure you agree not to try to get around the DRM. so you got lying before stealing
That's the only sure way to get your money to support the artists themselves, as they hardly make jack off of album sales (that money goes to the labels, with a very, very small portion going to the artists; I would assume that these ads distribute money in a similar fashion).
there is a very good reason for that. labels put up lots of money for the band up front. first off there is upfront money, which is a loan. then the label hires a producer and a recording studio. then you got marketing and actaully making the cds (or even mp3s you got to pay some one to code them). how about those music videos? yep those too. then you alot of time the label will pay for part of the tour. all in all the labes put a lot of money into an artist before you ever hear of them, if they can't get that money back, how do you expect them to sign more artst?

I'd just like to say I think this is stupid. The site works great, and I'm using it, despite my dislike for the DRM. Why do I keep using it then? Obviously it supports the artist, and is a cheap alternative to paying a dollar elsewhere, even if I do have to renew. But, if I were going to rip the DRM off, which makes it not so legal anymore, why not just use torrents?

Yeah I've been doing that. I found the problem. Before I had WMP11, and reverted back to WMP10. However, my IBX version is still at 11.0.6000.7000 when Mirakagi can only go up to 11.0.6000.6324 (I believe). I just have to wait for an update or an alternative I suppose.
