Also if you want to check out classic X-Men stories you could pick up a couple of the Essentials. You can find them fairly cheap on amazon.ca.

I agree with Gobo here, Booster Gold is glorious continuity porn. Not for new readers. But it is excellent in every other way that matters.

Also, hell fucking yes. Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men is the only current X-men book worth reading. The rest of that line is far too bloated and regressive. Do yourself a favor and get Grant Morrison's New X-men in trade before reading Astonishing. The alpha and omega of X-men comics worth reading, so to speak.

Around 6 years ago I got into comics because of a friend who collected them. After I moved I didn't see another.. but I'd really like to get back into comics since they are pure awesomeness!! So I was wondering..

Where should I start from?

What series are good?

Where is the best place to get them?

Anything else I should know?

Any good sites??

Sweet.

Old comic staple. Throw out a list of ten assorted movies and we'll give you a list of where to start.

Edit: P.S. The omission that you should like the movies was implied :)

Books i have just read or am reading atm:
Runaways (#1)
Young Avengers( #2 top books for me )
Astonishing X-men ( #3)
Nextwave Agents of hate
All Star Superman( like it but alil freaky for me will finish reading it,but like i said alittle Willy Wonka)
Ultimate Spider-Man
BatMan RIP
Skrull Invasion
Y : The last Man
Pride Of Baghdad

I Enjoy in general "rally the troops", "All hope Lost" and "Space ( I.E. Galactice , DarkSeid, Thanos )"

I hope I can make my self clear, I just finished season one of "Justice League Unlimited" and I loved it.I want more JLA like that if its at all common some key features I enjoyed seriousness of the political and relationship aspects, Batman and WonderWomen romance ( I 've heard that its not really part of the comics just mentioning), sense of humor among the members. Here is somthing annoying I should get out in the clear about me I am a stickler for old art can't take it forgive me comic Gods, but i am spoiled. If any books come to mind that you might think fit in to that theme please let me know JLA or not.

Thank you very much for your time and effort.

I bought comics! Thanks for all the suggestions people!

So, what did I get? Well, after taking your comments, and then basically walking up to the comic book shop owner and telling him I wasn't a comic book reader, but wanted to get into it (after perusing 500 comics I knew nothing about of course), the owner was actually a pretty cool guy, and helped me out with finding some stuff I wanted.

So, I told him I liked Alan Moore's V for Vendetta near the end of the convo, and he lit up and said I should check out his League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/League_of_extraordinary_gentlemen), which peaked my interest, because (despite being told it's terrible by comic lovers), I did enjoy the art direction/style of the movie, and was unaware of the comic! So, I got Volume 1 and 2! So, what do you guys think of this series, and Alan Moore in general? I'm liking it so far (about a quarter through the first volume). The art is interesting.. not sure what I think about it yet. Some of it is really comical, and I like that :)

So back to X-Men. Now, I got a little lost in the comic book jargon, but it seems Xavier's heads been shot, after some epidemic of most mutants losing their powers, and the first mutant to be born since the epidemic is some kind of saviour to mutants in general, and has been given to Cable to protect it. Sounds cool. That said, I'm lost on who half the *newer* characters are, haha. But anyways, I got X-Men Legacy #1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-Men:_Legacy), and the comic book guy threw in Cable #1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_(comics)), which I'm actually really glad about. X-Men Legacy was basically confusing, because I'm not up to speed, so I don't have much to say about it, but Cable I really enjoyed actually, and definitely plan on following. The art is very cool, though I'm not 100% sure I love it yet, but I love the sort of man on the run style of the comic. Thoughts?

Now I did some research. I'm really interested in Grant Morrison's run on New X-Men, and apparently there is a New X-Men Omnibus, which has Morrison's whole run in it. Not sure how easy this is to get, but this sounds like something I'd be interested in. Thoughts?

Now... I've gotta say I'm confused by all these different X-Men lines. From what I've researched, there are two *main* series that have been going on for a long time: what is now the X-Men Legacy series (previously X-Men/New X-Men) and there is the Uncanny X-Men series (previously "The" X-Men (different from just "X-Men" I guess)). And then there are a million offshoots: Astonishing, Young X-Men, X-Factor, Cable, Wolverine, X-Force, etc. Do I have this right? Maybe? Kinda?

So, does Uncanny and Legacy run within the same storyline, more or less, or are they separate stories completely? How does all this work? Does everything relate, or are a bunch of them one-off for fun series? You can see my confusion (assuming I have any of this right).

Then lastly, the guy threw in this X-Men: Divided We Stand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-Men:_Divided_We_Stand) 1 of 2 thing, which is more or less just some backstory for some of the lesser young characters that survived the mutant extermination and were left on their own after X-Men was disbanded. Fun because it was free, but not of any real important I think. Still, filled me in a little more.

So, thoughts everyone? haha.

Edit: So I looked up that New X-Men Omnibus, and it's like $200! Dayum! I'm thinking I'll get the individual volume trade paper backs. Smart?

Anyone who told you the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen books are terrible is both wrong in the extreme and does not love comics at all.

What utter nonsense. The LoXG books are phenomenal in every respect. Never even speak to those people again.

Pfft~!

Okay, first thing first the X-men Omnibus: If you have the money to buy this then I say go for it. Unfortunately the Omnibus edition is out of print and the cheapest I've found it for is 180 bucks and it just goes up from there. I say pick it up in trades, you will be spending just about the same to get the entire Morrison run plus if you decide that you don't like the Morrison run (Which I don't know why you wouldn't) you can just drop it.

Secondly: You are right there are a bunch of off shoots and there has been pretty much two different series of the book for quite some time. Ron would be better to answer all the nuance of it. As far as Uncanny and Adjetiveless (aka X-men or New X-men) the books generally take place during the same time as each other but they generally run different teams in each book. One book may have Jean, Scott, Logan, Storm and Colossus while another book would have Nightcrawler, Kitty Pride, Rouge, Gambit, and Iceman. Sometimes the stories intersect and sometimes they don't. Like darning the Morrison run on New, Chuck Austin was doing things in Uncanny and the two titles rarely interwove (I think, I could be wrong. It's been a while since I've read either).

I guess to make a long story short, the stories can connect or the wont. It's all up to the creative teams working on them. Stories from Uncanny can affect stories in X-men and vice versa. The entire runs on both for most part can be considered cannon.

I hope that makes some sense, its just hard to explain. I bet there are some more people who could answer this better, maybe Ron could do a mini about this subject alone.

Cool. Definitely helping. I think I might follow Legacy for a bit and see how I like it, and I'm going to order the first Morrison trade today or tomorrow from my local shop. I'd jump into Uncanny, but I kind of want some more back up info, and Legacy is starting at a #1, so I figured why not.

I think trades are the way to go with Morrison because, honestly, I think everybody agrees the first couple are worth reading, and important background to things that have happened in Astonishing and now, apparently, 'Legacy.' From the third trade on, well -- your mileage may vary, but I'd at least get a flavor for the series before spending money on it. It's not everybody's cuppa.

So I used to be a big X-Men fan....got all X books basically....then a few years ago I couldn't take the crap they kept putting out. I dropped all the lines....Astonishing I kept though. With issues 500 coming out, is it a good time for me to maybe try hopping back on board? I have no idea what they have planned for the X-characters in the future. I am wondering if anyone knows if it sounds promising or I should just stick to living without them and buying the odd trade?

I thought about Jack Kirby's New Gods but if I get one of them I'm going to want to get the rest and that's 4 books. Not spending that much money. So yeah. Any ideas?

I'm looking for recommends. I've read many comics from the library but have just started buying floppies regularly. I'm very much enjoying Huntress: Year One mini. I also find Invincible Iron Man to be a good read but it doesn't click with me as much as Ivory Madison's writing yet. I also really like Troy Hickman's writing.

Here are lists of stuff I've loved.

comics:
Watchmen
Understanding Comics
DKR
Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale stuff
Chester Brown's Louis Riel
Maus

Movies:
Memento
2001 Space Odyssey
Gerry
Coffee and Cigarettes

Books:
No Logo - Naomi Klein
Feminine Mystique - Betty Friedan
Green Eggs And Ham - Dr. Seuss

So, it's been a while since I posted in this thread, and since then I have read a good number of graphic novels and the like.

I forced my way past the starting of Preacher and was hooked by the end of the first trade. I have since bought and read all 9 trades and loved it.

I started the Exterminators, loved the first trade, but the second completely lost my interest. Is this one worth picking up again?

I've been looking into and reading as much of the main Marvel story lines as possible. Read House of M and the Original Galactus storyline, as well as a couple others that are escaping me right now. Looking forward to reading Civil War and want to read it all before getting into Secret Invasion, although it's a little bit daunting to get through that many comics.

I read the first League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and was thoroughly entertained, yet I'm finding the second to be a little bit more of a fight to force my way through it.

I read Mouse Guard and found it rather interesting, although an incredibly fast read. I'll problaby read the next one as well.

I guess my problem now is, I don't know where to go from here. Every time I go to the the comic store, nothing really catches my eye. I tried the first bit of Fables and it didn't catch me at all. I've heard good things about Transmet, but not sure I want to get into something that big at this point unless I'm pretty sure about it. Sin City has caught my eye once or twice, but never enough to dish out the money for the first trade.

I am interested in Batman stuff, but have read most of the big ones that I've had recommended to me: Year One, Dark Knight Returns, Hush, Long Halloween... maybe some others that are slipping my mind.

I'm really wide open to suggestions right now. Anyone have anything to recommend?

First off I gotta thank everyone who made suggestions to my earlier posts last month. I've been back into comics for about 2-3 months now, picking up 1-3 trades a week depending on how busy I am. However, looking at my shelf and my buying habits the last few times I've been to the comic shop I've noticed I'm really missing some super hero stand alone books. FYI I don't buy monthly books, just trades. :)

I've been trying to finish off Preacher, and catch-up on Fables trades, and I've also been reading Box Office Poison. They're all great books, but (a) I want a super hero book to read and (b) I'd like something that doesn't have 10 trades I have to buy to finish a story. I'd love something along the lines of Marvels, and by that I mean a story I can pick-up, grasp most of the characters, complete in a sitting or two and look back saying that was a great story.

The super hero books I have now are Batman: TLH, Batman: Year One, Kingdom Come, Marvels, Astonishing X-Men HC #1, Ultimate Spiderman #1, and Civil War & Civil War: Wolverine.

I've been looking at a few things and maybe you guys can help out. I'm definitely going to pick-up The New Frontier in a month or so. I'd also love to look at some DC event books... mainly some Crisis stuff, but I'm not really sure the order I should read them. I know Crisis on Infinite Earth comes first, not sure about the others though. Green Hornet & The Flash are characters I've always wanted to get into but I don't really know what must have books are out for them.

Like I said, I'm set with non-super hero books for a good while. So any help in the above are you guys could give would be great!!

DC event books I believe start at Crisis of Infiite Earths, Identity Crisis, and then Infinite Crisis. It's now on Final Crisis, but it's not in a trade. Alot of the DC crisis books you need backstory on (I found out the hardway with Infinite Crisis), so Wikipedia will become your friend. I love the New Avengers. They have 2 hardbacks that will almost catch you up. There will be two trades after the hardbacks. Green Lantern Rebirth is a good GL to start on. Thats all I can think of right now, I read The Ultimates 1 all in one sitting, my head isnt all there right now.

If I were to tell you, I haven't missed a San Diego Comic Con since 1993, yet haven't seriously read comics since around 98-99 would you listen to me? So here's my dilemma. I used to be into comics when I was younger. Around 98-99(maybe sooner) I drifted away, yet still attended the Comic Con every year since it is so close. Recently while visiting my parents I was going through some old boxes and found my comic collection. As I read through some of my issues, that fascination with them came back.

Over the past 2 weeks or so, I have been listening/watching the iFanboy podcasts and have been getting even more excited. My question to the community, tell me what to read! I am most interested in catching up on what has been going on in the various universes, but am also looking forward to moving to the future of what is to come.

Quick run down of what I like: Punisher was and is my favorite character. I would say I am much more into the solo characters, but I do enjoy good team stories. Some of my other interests were Spawn, most of the Image universe, Spiderman and Superman. If I were to rate the universes, I would probably go in Marvel, Image, DC as to what I am interested in.

So please suggest some good trades for me to pick up. I have gone ahead and purchased The Road To Civil War, and the Civil War, which I am enjoying very much right now. I have a relatively high disposable income, and am looking to pick up maybe 3-5 trades a week(maybe more depending on how fast I read them). Thanks again.

EDIT: I thougth I would clarify the comic con thing. The time I "wasn't into comics" I was going to the panels on TV and films. Funny that going through my old comics is what sparked my interest again, not being surrounded by them every year.

Captain America: Death of Captain America Vol 1 and 2 (great, but you need to either know the story before or read the omniubus)

I'm really wide open to suggestions right now. Anyone have anything to recommend?

You said you tried FABLES already, but it's kind of a "universal" saying around here, that you need to give it three, four, maybe even five trades before it finally starts to show you the scope it's working on and becomes the creation that everyone tends to rave about.

If you don't go back to that, give Transmet a try. It's one of my personal favorites as well as one of the best comics I've read period. If the size is too daunting, then I suggest maybe getting something relatively newer that doesn't have as much material out, say like SCALPED or FEAR AGENT. Also, THE LOSERS was a fantastic series that only has 5 trades for purchase. That could be a good "mid-range" book as far as commitment and cost goes.

Anything else I can help you with? ;)

If you enjoy Punisher have you read much Wolverine solo stuff? I don't read it, but I don't like Punisher. The two characters are fairly similar in tone, same goes for Spawn.

Ok .. so like this thread says I'm new to comics. I have been searching the internet, reading as many forums and such as possible to figure out where and how to start. After a few days of research I decided to dive in ...

I went out and bought Ultimate Spiderman TPB Volume 1-5 (and am loving it and will continue to read this series)

I bought Batman: Year One (loved it) and then bought Batman: The Dark Night Returns (I read that this is one of the best) ... where do I go after this?

I bought the Ultimates TPB Volume 1 & 2 (I really enjoyed 1 havn't had the time to get into 2). I hear The Ultimates 2 isn't that great .. any suggestions/opinions if I should read Ultimates 2?? and where do I go from there?

Through reading through treads I wanted to get Y: The Last Man but my local comic book store didnt have volume 1 in stock so I'm gonna wait a few weeks before I dive into this ... can anyone confirm and reconvince me that this series is worth my money, the concept sounds super interesting

The last four series were pretty easy to decide on. Not only did I have an interest in them, but there seemed to be quite a few people who recommended them. Now on to where I'm a little more intimidated ...

X-Men ... the universe is HUGE, and I have no clue where to start. Easiest way out is to go w/ the Ultimate Universe, but I have read that its not that great. Any help?

Iron-Man ... First off, loved the movie! I hear Extremis might be the way to go in order to start off. Is this a good place to start? Any other suggestions?

Avengers ... I know that the Ultimates is like the Avengers in the Ultimate Universe, but I still want to get into the god ole' avengers. Now there are some opinions that the best place to start is w/ New Avengers (this takes place after Avengers Disassembled, and you really don't need much back story). Is this correct?

Last but not least Superman! He is the King of the DC world ... and like X-Men is Hugely intimidating because of his history ... Any Suggestions? What are you thoughts on the Justice League .. easier to pick up than Superman by himself?

Thanks for any help!! And I welcome any more recommendations of comics that I havn't mentioned .. superhero or not.

Again, thanks a million in advance!

Y The Last Man is definitely worth your time and money. One of the best and most important comics in the last ten years. And now that all of it is available in trade, there is no better time to start.

Unless of course you want to wait until the deluxe editions (http://www.amazon.com/Y-Last-Man-Book-Deluxe/dp/1401219217/ref=pd_bbs_11?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214404059&sr=8-11) start rolling out this fall (it's gonna take a while). The content of two trade paperbacks will be collected in each deluxe hardcover.

My first comic when returning to the game was New Avengers, so that is a fine place to go next. Check out Disassembled and the New Avengers collections. You may also want to check out House of M, also by Bendis, to fill out the story.

The best recommendation for Superman right now is All Star Superman by Grant Morrison. It's out of continuity, but it's a must read. Just stunning stuff. If you're interested in monthly issues, there's probably no better time to jump on both Superman and Action Comics, by James Robinson and Geoff Johns respectively.

As for JLA, you may want to wait for the upcoming hardcover edition of Grant Morrison's epic run on the series. That should be coming out in August.

If a book says JSA and Geoff Johns on it, pick that up. The great thing about Johns is that even though he mines the archives for older characters and concepts, he presents these ideas in a very accessible way. You may have to check some things out on Wikipedia, but sometimes just jumping right into the fray is a lot of fun. Justice Society of America: The Next Age is a ton of fun and my favorite superhero comic on the shelves, bar none.

Welcome back to comics. Have fun, and don't hesitate to ask more questions.

Hey all:

I've been a comic book fan for 20+ years, but suspended my monthly subscription almost two years ago. I'm now jumping back in, and need a 10th title to collect. My collection is probably 60% Marvel, 30% DC, and 10% other. Here's my current list:

Final Crisis
Amazing Spider-Man
Astonishing X-Men
Iron Man: Director Of SHIELD
Mighty Avengers
New Avengers
Secret Invasion
Ultimate Spider-Man
Wolverine

I'd like to grab either another DC book, or maybe a Vertigo title to contrast a bit from the superhero books. I'll eventually need a couple more titles once FC and SI end their runs, so feel free to recommend as many as you want.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions! :)

I really like the just-launched 'Invincible Iron Man' series that Matt Fraction is writing - though I know just as many people who dislike it, so it probably depends on how you like your Iron Man. Might be worth checking out if you're a fan of the character, because it's only a couple issues old.

Edit: Which, rereading, I realize doesn't actually match your request; I just jumped on that because of Iron Man. I can't be very helpful on DC books, but I liked the start of James Robinson's run on 'Superman,' and everybody on the site seems to be high on Action comics, too. Or, as Cammy mentioned, there's Green Lantern.

Ten best things I could recommend in this aspect off the top of my head:

Fables
Ex Machina
Walking Dead
Criminal
Fear Agent
Scalped
House of Mystery
DMZ
The Northlanders
Wasteland

Also, check out anything Jonathan Hickman is writing. Always worth a look.

DC books --
Green Lantern / Green Lantern Corps are both awesome.
Action Comics is beyond awesome.
Nightwing is kickin' some ass right now.

Vertigo --
Scalped is one of the best books on the racks, not just best non-superhero books. If you like gritty, crime type stuff, this book is for you.

What are some good Dick Grayson stories that focus on him, that happen while he's still Robin. I own Dark Victory and Robin:Year One already. I'm also looking for something that's in a TPB format... Hunting for issues is too hard.

Also, What's a better introduction to Mr. Freeze?

Batman: Mr. Freeze
or
Batman: Snow

Welcome to the forums, Sonic-attack.

I normally leave this thread to the professionals, but I figured I'd jump in here and recommend a few.

If you liked Ultimates volume 1, be sure to pick up Volume 2. It's a great "next step" to the series.

As for your Thor/LOR love, I'd highly recommend picking up the newest Thor series. I believe the trade of the first few issues either just came out, or is coming out soon. Keep an eye out for that one. Really good stuff.

Thanks, I'll probably give Fables a try, and when I get some more time and money Transmet is probably going to top my list. Haven't had time to do much reading of anything lately. I picked up the first Scott Pilgrim book and enjoyed it a lot, but time and money are working against me these days, haven't been able to get the second one yet.

To be 100% honest, right now I am on a huge Batman kick after seeing The Dark Knight. I want more of the Joker! But I just feel that anything I read is going to fall short of Ledger's Joker. I did read The Killing Joke beforehand and definitely enjoyed that one, but Ledger just brought something to the table that I hadn't seen before with the Joker. Are there any Joker stories that fall in line with Ledger/Nolan's vision of the character? If not, what are some other good Batman/Joker stories? I think I've read most of the more well-known stories, but would love to read some lesser known ones as well.

Hi there

I'm not completely new to comics but have only been reading for a few months. Before that, I had never read a comic in my life :O (I'm 27 btw).

Anyway, currently I am working my way through the Fables and Y The Last Man trades and I am loving them both a LOT! I have deliberately researched the "mature" type comics because I think that's where my interests in comics will lie in the main.

Other stuff I have read:

Fell - am up to date and LOVE it. I love the darkness of it, how it is so bleak. I like that it's 'real life' and I am a huuuge fan of Ben Templesmith

Dead Space - picked this up based on the artwork (before I realised I loved Templesmith) and boy I'm glad I did. For me, it's not the monsters that draws me to it but the whole psychological mind-**** that it is before a monster even appears. The mystery of what is going on and how it's driving everyone mental is what I love. The monsters are secondary to the story for me.

Proof - I'm up to date on this too. I'm in 2 minds about this... it's... pretty good/not bad *shrugs*

Screamland - It was ok, not bad.

Watchmen - Amazing! A masterpiece! Everyone already knows that though.

Pride of Baghdad - Great book. Visually stunning too. Really enjoyed it!

The Killing Joke - The only Batman book I have ever read. Really enjoyed this! Would be very much interested in reading more batman if it's like this one.

The Umbrella Academy - Good stuff, I enjoyed it.

I think that's about it of the main books Ive read.

In terms of what I like and what I'm looking for... as I said, I'm mostly interested in the 'mature' comics - and the publishers I tend to keep an eye on are Vertigo, IDW and Image. I'm interested in more indie comics I might not have heard of too.

I like 'real life' stuff or stories that are close to real life. I mean, Fables isn't exactly real life but it strangely still falls in that category for me. In saying that, I won't rule out superhero stuff.

I like intelligent, thought-provoking stories. I like mysteries. I love the tv show LOST!

I also like sick stuff lol. But not sick just for the sake of sick - I tend to like there to be a reason for it or at least something thought-provoking underlying it. For example, I love the SAW films.

Books I am going to be reading soon are Preacher, Transmetropolitan and Welcome To Hoxford (when it comes out - can't wait) but I am looking for loads more to add to my list!

Thanks for any recommendations!

Just based on your likes and an interest in reading more Batman, I think Gotham Central (a mature look at the Gotham police department). Arkham Asylum is another great Batman story (very, very dark and nightmarish), and if you like Templesmith, I imagine you'll like Dave McKean's art as well.

Since you've enjoyed Brian K. Vaughan's work, I'd also suggest Ex Machina.

And for Alan Moore, books like From Hell (Jack the Ripper) and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are good bets.

And since you enjoyed Proof and Umbrella Academy, I wouldn't be me if I didn't recommend Hellboy and B.P.R.D.

now if i want to reading a currently published title, should i just go and pick up up what i want? is it hard to catch up? or should i try to find a trade paperback of the previous volumes? the walking dead, for example is in it's 8th volume, i think, can i pick that up where it's at in the story?

to be honest, if you go to the store and just pick up what looks cool, you're not gonna "get it". it was the same for me. with Jonah Hex though, you can just pick up whatever and understand it.

BoP is a graphic novel so you can just pick it up

as for Walking Dead and Invincible, you have to start at vol. 1 if you want to understand everything and get the whole story

I agree with Hank41, Ultimate Spider-man is perfection and I am working my way through the hardcovers as well as reading it monthly. Bendis really understands the characters and he creates a persistent and evolving cast of characters and Whedon style gut-wrenching deaths. (Though the death of a goblin arc done recently didn't really hit me like I thought it should have)

Where would I start with Hellboy? (I know nothing about Hellboy at all other than he is this big red dude :D)

Here's an article (http://www.ifanboy.com/content/articles/Devil_s_Food__Getting_Into_Hellboy) I wrote on getting into Hellboy.

The boys also did two video shows on it here (http://www.ifanboy.com/podcasts/video/iFanboy_-_Episode__40_-__Hellboy_) and here (http://www.ifanboy.com/podcasts/video/iFanboy__-_Episode__78___Hellboy_Again__Hellboy_2_and_More_H ellboy_Comics).

The good news is that you can really start reading anywhere. The books are numbered, so you can go that route, but since Hellboy's adventures span over 60 years and they've been told out of sequence, you can pick it up at any collection and enjoy an isolated story. They don't really require that you know much more than the basic concept that he's a big red demon who was raised to be the best paranormal detective for the forces of good. Highly, highly recommended. It's my favorite franchise.

Awesome, thanks a lot!

Interested in reading more Jim Starlin. Really enjoying Infinity Gauntlet, and Luthor mentioned Dreadstar on Twitter, so I thought I'd ask for recommendations on other books by Starlin, and really any great cosmic stories in general. Maybe Silver Surfer or New Gods or anything like that.

For instance, was Starlin's Mysery in Space any good? How about Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos? Just a couple things that caught my eye on Amazon.

Have you read Cosmic Odyssey yet? With Mignola on the art duties I could see you liking it quite a bit.

I actually picked it up not too long ago. It was quite good, and it actually got me to read Death of the New Gods.

I picked up the first three issues this past week...

I recently read Lost at Sea, the book that Bryan Lee O'Malley made before he did Scott Pilgrim. Freakin phenomenal. Can't recommend that enough...

silver surfer: rebirth of thanos is great. infinity way is the best. its got everyone!....after that it gets repetitive. jim starlin start rehashing the same plot over and over...infinty abyss, infinity crusade etc. marvel: the end i hear is good. no trade yet though and im still missing issue 3.

Well after reading some stuff on Hellboy and watching the 1st podcast I still couldn't decide where to start, heh. Typically I'm the kind of person who would want to start with book 1, even when you don't have to, but like the guys said on the podcast - EVERYONE will tell you "it gets better..." so I was worried I would read book 1, not like it and not bother with any more.

So. I decided to just buy the latest comic. Less financial loss that way if I don't like it :p

What can I say? By the end of the 5th page I knew this was something I was going to have to read more of! I really really loved it! A lot of people have told me "if you like Proof you should try Hellboy". Even the guy in my local comic shop said to me the other day as I bought the lastest Proof issue "it's quite Hellboy-ish isn't it". Having read just one Hellboy issue (so now obviously being qualified to say this lol) - that is a HUGE compliment to Proof!! I don't think Proof even touches Hellboy in terms of awesomeness.

What really stood out for me when I turned the 1st page was how the redness of Hellboy just jumps out at you. Maybe that's a strange thing to love but it really struck me as awesome. Everything else is quite dark in that horror, atmospheric kinda way and then there's this mega-bright red just jumping off the page at you. I love it.

So thanks for that recommendation. If you hadn't already guessed, I'll definitely be reading more! :D

We have a recommendation thread stickied at the top of the forum. Don't let the poor thread title fool you. The thread is the place to go for comic book recommendations of all kinds- new to comics, returning to comics, catching up w/ comics, filling in gaps or whatever.

Link (http://www.revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12078).

That being said, this is the advice I gave to someone else asking this question a few months ago....

If you are getting into DC Comics as a Marvel fan, stick with the books written by Geoff Johns. Johns is DC at this point and has a way of leveraging DC's ultra-complexity to tell good stories that are new reader friendly.

Recommended Johns Books:

Green Lantern: Rebirth. This is where Johns and Van Sciver brought back Hal Jordan and the first volume of the War of Light. Sinestro Corps War was vol. 2 and Blackest Night will be three.

JLA: Crisis Of Conscience. The aftermath of Identity Crisis. Almost as good as IdC itself.

Justice Society of America: The Next Age. Johns' best work. An open love letter to the hero genre

Action Comics: Last Son. Spectacular art and writing in one of the most tragic Superman stories in years. Bring 3-D glasses.

Superman: Up, Up and Away. The story of Superman after losing his powers during Infinite Crisis.

Booster Gold: 52 Pick Up. A clinic on how to do a continuity heavy book that is understandable, well written and fun.

The Flash: Rouge War. This shit. Oh man.

The Flash: Iron Heights. See above.

Recommended Good DC Books in General:

Any and all of Grant Morrison's JLA. The pinnacle of the superhero genre, all current day hero comics going forward strive to be like this. Most fail.

52. Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka, Grant Morrison, J.G. Jones and Mark Waid's weekly series which tells the story of a year without Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. This is modern DC comics.

Starman. James Robinson's masterpiece of the 90s. Very few comics, hero books or otherwise, are as thoughtful and well written as this. Considered one of the greatest series of all time. I would not disagree.

Batman: Arkham Asylum. The most depraved and chilling depictions of Batman's adversities. And why the Batman is needed to fight them. Written by Grant Morrison, of course.

Animal Man. Some would recommend Doom Patrol here. But the truth is DP is a bit more dense and requires some work on the newbie's part. Better to go with Morrison's equally good (and no less heady), post-modern masterpiece about God and the nature of creation.

All Star Superman. No one who reads this series walks away with the same opinion of Superman they went in with. The best hero book being published currently. Every chapter is a revelation. Every page is mad genius. Timeless.

Gotham Central. Brubaker and Rucka switch off writing duties on a series about the beleaguered Gotham Police department. The Wire as if Batman were a street myth whispered on the lips of the madmen and criminals.

Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia: Rucka's most succinct and accessible Wonder Woman story with art by J.G. Jones.

Other Good, newbie friendly, DC Books:

All of Marc Andreyko's Manhunter series; Street Justice, Trial By Fire, Origins, Unleashed.
Superman For All Season
Batman: The Long Halloween
Batman: No Man's Land
The Flash: Crossfire
Wonder Woman: Land Of The Dead
The Question: Five Books Of Blood
Green Lantern: No Fear
JSA: Justice Be Done
Green Arrow: Year One
Teen Titans: Titans East
Nightwing: Freefall
Batman: Son Of The Demon
Action Comics: Superman & The Legion Of Super Heroes
The Flash: Blood Will Run
JSA: The Golden Age
Batman: Face The Face
JLA: The Tornado's Path
Blue Beetle; Shellshocked, Reach For The Stars and Endgame
Robin: Wanted
The majority of Simone's Birds Of Prey.

Red Son is fun. But if you want to get a bead on the current Superman of DC, than Geoff Johns' spectacular run on Action Comics is a must.

In fact, if one claims to enjoy comics that are good, not necessarily DC or whatever- then that person would be a liar if they were not reading the current run on Action Comics.

Nothing. It's a bit of a rub. Heinberg's got those characters in a gridlock... It's this whole... crazy thing...

If you want more stuff like that, go pick up Runaways, there's four hardcovers out now and they're fantastic. If you want more YA, there's six issues of Young Avengers presents, which focuses on the six mainish characters (Patriot, Hulkling, Wiccan & Speed, Stature, Vision, and Hawkweye) and there's two Young Avengers/Runaways miniseries... One for Civil War and one that's currently playing out via Secret Invasion, not awful, but very constricted in what they're able to do.

Other than that, you've got rare cameos (Hawkeye and Patriot show up in Fallen Son Captain America #3, for example) and not much else...

I was wondering if I might possibly get a reccomendation on comics as I'm new to coimics

I LOVED Supreme Power because of the artwork and the whole goverment conspiracy thing. I told this to someone and they told me to check out the authority. I didnt care for it really.

I LOVED Captain america trade that had the death of captain america and the winter soldier I guess I like the newer art.

Also Watchmen I really enjoyed except for the side story comic that the kid read by the newsstand I had to skip past all those.... oh and I like the killing joke.

Hopefully based on this you might be able to help me out... oh and the library edition of hellboy was great.

I'm following secret invasion and really like it.

I basically follow iFanboy/Totally Rad and buy the trades the reccomend because I've only been into comics for about the last 6 months and wanna read more... I also like alias.

Any takers on reccomendations?

Sonic-Attack's Walking Dead suggestion is a really good one.

Since you liked Long Halloween, pick up Dark Victory. It's the follow-up. I only just read it myself, and I think I may have enjoyed it a wee bit more then Long Halloween.

Based on the rest of your books, I'd say you need to give the first trade of Y: The Last Man a shot. It's a standard go to recommendation, but I'd wager you'd really like it.

Invincible Ultimate Collection Volumes 1 & 2

OR

Gotham Central Hardcover Book 1 plus .. something (maybe Morrison's new JLA hardcover)

The power is in your hands! Wesley Snipes has advised me to always bet on black, but aside from that..... is it a win either way? Make my shopping choices iFanboy Forums!

p.s. - Cashing in Marriot rewards next week... that's going to be like $100... must decide between Capt America and Daredevil Omnibi. We'll get to that when the GC shows up.

I need more stories like Lovers And Madmen!

And I think I now know what has been putting me off superhero stuff. I don't want 'the good guy' to win. In Lovers and Madmen there wasn't really even a good guy. Batman was crazy. I mean, if it wasn't for Batman, there probably wouldn't have been the Joker. Jack might have just killed himself or got that guy to do it for him... but then Batman interrupts everything. I love that about that story.

Now, granted, I haven't read any full superhero story arcs but what I don't want is goody versus baddy and goody wins. That was ok when I was 8. Not now. I'm actually hoping to be told that that's just a misconception of mine and that it isn't about good guys out to save the world and defeating the bad guys.

So there's the problem really. I don't have an interest in heroes, whether they are "super" or not. I find saving the day really boring to read or watch. Hmmm.

So! Any stories like Lovers and Madmen? It can be any characters, any universe, anything. Any story that's brave enough to not have a happy ending.

Thank you :)

One that explains how modern fury started/is involved with shield and what he's all about.I don't know about an origin story, but he has had a lot of seperate series/miniseries through the years.

Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson did a Max miniseries a few years ago called Fury (http://www.amazon.com/Fury-TPB-Max-Comics-Cover/dp/0785108785/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221082300&sr=1-4). Actually, now that I think about it they did another miniseries called Fury: Peacemaker (http://www.amazon.com/Fury-Peacemaker-TPB-Garth-Ennis/dp/0785117695/ref=pd_cp_b_2?pf_rd_p=413864201&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0785108785&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1MJ7QRSXZQ98Y805BD59) that is the closest thing I've heard of to an origin story. I haven't read it myself, but I've heard good things about it.

Fury was really really good. It showed the potential in the Max line which I don't think it reached, except with Alias, this, and that punisher stuff.

Hey all

I usually buy my trades online using reward points. I've cashed in some this week and so now I'm playing with house money. What should I buy?

Invincible Ultimate Collection Volumes 1 & 2

OR

Gotham Central Hardcover Book 1 plus .. something (maybe Morrison's new JLA hardcover)

The power is in your hands! Wesley Snipes has advised me to always bet on black, but aside from that..... is it a win either way? Make my shopping choices iFanboy Forums!

p.s. - Cashing in Marriot rewards next week... that's going to be like $100... must decide between Capt America and Daredevil Omnibi. We'll get to that when the GC shows up.

Well... I had to make this decision myself. Capt. America Omnibus, Invincible 1,2,3 in hardcover and GC HC are all headed my way thanks to the fine folks at Marriot hotels.

Recommend?

Well people give JMS a lot of crap, and rightfully so. But maybe my favorite story of all time (okay second with Kingdom Come a far first) is:

Silver Surfer: Requiem

A Marvel Knights book about the death of the Silver Surfer. Four issues, or now four chapters for the trade; all deal with Surfer dealing with his friends, family and, his influence of the galaxy as the once Herald of Galactus. Fantastic writing, hell JMS made Spider-Man more entertaining here then his own run on the guy! Plus some of the best art, maybe I can title it better as 'Closest to Alex Ross designs'. Esad Ribic is now one of my favorite artists, adding realistic tones to the characters and making some of the best background and colors ever used in a book. Pick this up! You need to, not because it's a JMS book, not because it's a Surfer book, not because it's even a Marvel Knights book......It's one of the best comic book stories PERIOD. Find it in Hardcover or TPB at your store now.

Oh and Ribic is on Sub-Mariner: The Depths right now, another series I recommend which just started

I just read through these both recently with limited knowledge of the DC universe and I found this experience perfectly enjoyable. I didn't read anything else relating directly to these stories and I was able to figure them out without any trouble.

Very cool , Ive just finished My absolute of Crisis on Infinite Earths too and its a bit hokey in parts but very fun and a whos whos of the DCU , it even has the dreaded Ocean Master.

Absolute version is nice but paperback if short on cash :)

When i was younger i used to get comics all the time and for the past 10 ive had a falling out with comics and seem to have fallen out of the loop of what is good, since i was 8 years old 10 years ago. im getting back into it though. got Y: the Last Man, From Hell, The Watchmen, The Killing Joke, and Planetary. ive also started reading Deadpool, War Heroes, and Final Crisis.

I need some good recommendations to pick up at the local shop and maybe some good recommendations on any omnibus or collections that might be essential to my comic collection.

Please help! Im so lost and there are so many comics out there!

Trades that are being released soon to keep an eye out for: Black Summer, Locke & Key, FreakAngels, Doktor Sleepless, Dead Space. (sorry I'm a bit of an Ellis junkie at the moment)

Current stuff, off the top of my head that I like and only have a handful of issues out at most are: I Kill Giants, Echo, Golly!, House of Mystery, Kick Ass. Get the 1st trade of Umbrella Academy and then you can jump on the new arc in November. Someone else can help you with the mainstream superhero stuff, but I did enjoy the 1st issue of Secret Six that was out a couple of weeks ago.

I almost forgot: get DMZ.

I was sceptical, as I am about any Ennis stuff these days after reading Crossed #0 but The Boys hooked me pretty much straight away. I haven't even finished the first trade yet (I think I've just one issue to go) but know I'll be sticking with it... vol 2 was ordered last night. Ellis has a great essay in the intro about his lifelong interest in space travel. It's (almost) entirely uncynical, a whole other side from his usual persona. I enjoyed that almost as much as the book.

About a month ago I started reading comics again after about 10 years. I've read some really great stuff so far--first 4 trades of Preacher, all of Y the Last Man, a bunch of Powers, the first 3 hardcover Invincible and Walking Dead books, and I just picked up the first trades of Astonishing X-Men and All Star Superman. I've been very happy with my selections so far (and iFanboy has helped a ton). The next thing I'm interested in is a good modern Justice League book, something provides a good overall introduction to the series but is also recent enough that I can get a decent picture of where things are in that world right now. I went to my local comic store over the weekend and looked around, but there were just a ton of JLA books and nothing really screamed out at me as a good starting point. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Personal and general board picks.

Grant Morrison's JLA (heralded as greatness; should be trades 1-6 or so)
JLA: Tower of Babel (I love this trade)
JLA/JSA: Virtue and Vice
JLA Year One
JLA: The Obsidian Age (this is because this is one of those early stories I read that just sticks out as greatness for me)
Identity Crisis (A modern murder mystery that uses modern storytelling to discuss the imperfections of old iterations of the league)

Also, the current Justice League book is just a ton of weaksauce and complicated.... blah. Read Kingdom Come, then dive into Geoff Johns's JSA instead.

I can't vouch for its quality, but the spin-off Hellspawn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellspawn_(publication)) seems to have had some great talent on it (Brian Bendis, Ben Templesmith, Ashley Wood, and Steve Niles-whose talent is debatable)

For authors, I'm really into Faulkner and Steinbeck. My favorite few movies are probably The Darjeeling Limited, Donnie Darko, Pan's Labrynth, Burn After Reading, Garden State, and some others. I'm into some kind of out there music, like later Radiohead, Animal Collective, Battles, and some hardcore stuff.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Since we we like some of the same movies and music I will recommend what I just gave to a friend who is also getting into comics. You should check out Y the Last Man and Ex Machina by Brian K. Vaughn and I gave him Jinx by Brian Michael Bendis. As for superhero books go I would suggest picking up a trade of Invincible and maybe a trade of any superhero you feel partial too (if you like superman for example All Star Superman is a great series). Anyways I hope that helps.

As with most people posting here I am just getting back into comics. I just went back and read Watchmen again, I finished Y: The Last Man, and loved it. I just finished reading Walking Dead trade #1 - #8 and like it. Just finished Hellboy trade #1. I started off in comics reading X-men and Wolverine comics. Where should I jump into wolverine's story? Or what X-men series should I start with, Ultimate X-Men?

I want to start getting more into comics. My friend is an avid reader, and he's been really pushing me to buy some stuff, but we have very different taste. I read Watchmen and absolutely loved it (duh), but I was wondering if there was some other stuff that you guys could recommend?

For authors, I'm really into Faulkner and Steinbeck. My favorite few movies are probably The Darjeeling Limited, Donnie Darko, Pan's Labrynth, Burn After Reading, Garden State, and some others. I'm into some kind of out there music, like later Radiohead, Animal Collective, Battles, and some hardcore stuff.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I'm also relatively new to comics, and have almost the exact same tastes you've mentioned as far as movies, music, and also like Watchmen (also, glad to meet another Battles fan! saw 'em at Lollapalooza this year).

Anyway, based on that I can tell you what I have bought and enjoyed thus far:

The Sandman (vol. 1 & 2 so far)

Y: The Last Man

The Walking Dead

V for Vendetta

Phonogram: Rue Brittania (lots of 90s British music references, but awesome if you like fantasy and are a big music fan in general; one self-contained trade, and there's a new run coming out soon if you like it!)

Terry Moore's Echo (only 7 issues out so far, and the first 5 are in trade, so if you like it, you're in on the ground level)

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (but only if you're interested in Batman.. granted, people claim it a classic, but, while I enjoyed it, I feel like I'm only just enough of a Batman fan to have done so; also, I think Frank Miller is kind of a whackjob)

I'm also a big (but new) X-Men fan, and have enjoyed Grant Morrison's stint on New X-Men so far, as well as the little bit of Ultimate X-Men I've read. I haven't had the nerve to jump into something current yet.

I'm also checking out No Hero by Warren Ellis; only one and an intro issue out so far and I'm not sure how I feel, but just putting it out there.

I'm also about to jump into Criminal, which sounds pretty cool (and people have great things to say), but I haven't actually gotten back to the store to pick up the newest one and the back copies I ordered.. I've heard it's easy to jump into because of the self-contained story lines.

Hope all of that helps from someone in a very similar position!

Oh, and also, hi to everyone on the boards... this is the first time I've posted here (though I registered a bit ago)

Conor wrote an article (http://ifanboy.com/content/articles/_X-Men__First_Class__is_the_Best_X-Book_Being_Published) about it not long ago, and has mentioned it on the show a couple times. It's excellent. There's probably people better suited to answer your Wolverine question, though. I only read a select few Marvel titles.

Esophagus's recommendation of X-Men: First Class is right on; Wolverine: First Class is a similarly-executed book that takes place later in continuity, so if Wolvie is a favorite, I definitely recommend that one as well.

The four trades of Joss Whedon's (now-completed) run on 'Astonishing X-Men' are a good jumping-back-on point as well, and they make a complete and more-or-less self-contained story. A lot of people are digging the ongoing "Wolverine" arc by Mark Millar, as well; that takes place in an (alternate?) future, so it isn't tied in to any other current titles.

If you're interested in what's going on with the X-Men *right now* it gets a little more complicated, but there are good options. It depends on what creators/characters and types of stories you're interested in. I can give more specific recs based on that, but the "Messiah Complex" crossover, or the current runs of Astonishing X-Men (starting with 25) and Uncanny X-Men (starting with 500 or, really, 501), and the X-Men Legacy trade that just came out all have things to recommend them.

Hey guys,
About two years ago a moved house; when this happened most of my comics were lost and never recovered. Since then my interest in comics has diminished, but recently I've been trying to get back into them. Of course I replaced all my favorites and the essentials, but I'm finding it hard to know which current monthly or weekly books are worth reading.
Since I'm trying to get back into the comic scene I was wondering are there any current titles you guys could recommend? Just to give you an idea of what I'm into, some of my favorite comics include Invincible, Scott Pilgrim, The Tick, The Nightly News and Strangers In Paradise. So my taste is varied enough I guess.
Any books you could recommend, that'd be great!
Thanks!

Try Echo since you like SiP. It's really different story-wise but very Terry Moore.

And maybe I Kill Giants, Local, Locke & Key, DMZ, Doktor Sleepless...

My cousin has recently discovered comics, and I want to buy him a few as a gift. Since it is a gift, I don't want to make it too obvious and ask him a bunch of questions. So far he has read Dark Knight Returns and From Hell and really enjoyed both. He's an artist, so the idea of a visual story is what appealed to him and got him into comics. Just going by what he has already read and what I know of the movies and books he likes, these grittier stories and stories with a fairly strong point of view are what he appeals to him.

I'm thinking of getting him some Preacher and some Walking Dead. Maybe Transmetropolitan. Anyone think of any OGN's or a miniseries that might be good?

V for Vendetta is the first thing that came to my mind. He might of seen the movie as well so it could have some familiarity to it.

Wow, this list is amazing. I've gone through and read the following books.

I went back and re-read Watchmen and loved it, so I went through and read it again.

I read all of Y: The last man, the book was amazing, the ending wasn't what I expected (don't worry, no spoilers) but I still liked it. It was defiantly a series that was all about the journey.

Then I picked up HellBoy trades #1 and #2. I enjoyed them, but dang $17 bucks a pop, that's pricey. I'll still continue to buy them and read them but I'll have to take my time on those.

I just finished all the available trades of Walking Dead and I have to say I have mixed feelings about this book. Don't get me wrong, the story is amazing, but trades 7 and 8 really messed with me. I'm waiting to read the rest of the issues until they come out in trade #9.

So does anyone have suggestions on where to go from here? I would kind of like to get back into some of the superhero books but I really am loving books like Y and Walking dead. One of the guys from my local store suggested I pick up 100 bullets or Preacher, I thumbed through trade 1 of 100 bullets and I don't know if I love the artwork but I mainly read the comic books for the story.

Thanks for any help.

You should try to support your LCS as much as possible but you should definitely look at buying trades at a place like Borders or Amazon.com as they usually have great deals like buy 2 get 1 free or coupons or prices marked as high as 40% off. Anyways for superheros I would definitely look into Ed Brubakers Captain America run and Robert Kirkman's (the guy who writes Walking Dead) Invincible. Those two book have easily been my top two favorite superhero books of the last couple of years. As for 100 Bullets and Preacher goes. I have read and loved Preacher but I have not read 100 Bullets although I hear good things about it.

Okay, here’s the thing. I’ve always liked the aesthetic of comics, and superheroes and such (Batman the Animated Series was my favorite show as a kid), but I’ve only recently taken an interest in reading comics.

As far as stuff I already own or have read:

-League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The first volume of this was what got me into reading comics. Saw it on a display shelf at the library and the cover spoke to me. Loved the art style, and it was a fun book. Second volume was okay, but
-Godland. I’ve seen bits and pieces of this and really like what I’ve seen. Looks really fun, love the art. I’m getting the Celestial Edition Vol. 1 for Xmas.
-Hellboy. I haven’t actually read this yet, but I love the art, the concept sounds like something I’d enjoy, and I liked the first move.
-I liked the sound of the 90’s Starman series, and will be getting the first two TPBs of this for Xmas as well.
-I haven’t read much of him, but I’ve decided that Deadpool is very awesome.

I guess I enjoy fun, adventurous series, books that are serious but aren’t TOO serious, I appreciate some comedy in my comics. Looking at Hellboy, Godland, and League, looks like enjoy a bit of strangeness too.

I wouldn’t be opposed to non-superhero/adventure stuff either, Strangers in Paradise seemed interesting when mentioned, and I own and enjoyed some Blue Monday trades.

So… yeah. Is there anything I didn’t list that you’d suggest?

I think what would really help everyone on the boards is if you lay out the kinds of things you like to read. Like, what superheroes were you reading before? Are you a team guy, the solo hero, powers or no? These things help us guide you where you can buy nothing but awesomeness.

Thanks for the quick response, and that's a good point :) I was reading Superman, Batman, Justice League, Robin, X-MEN (loved both ultimate and regular, and mutant books).

I love individual heroes, as well as team books too. Basically, if it's a good series and highly suggested I will read it. But I have been out of comics since pre Civil War :(

Superman you can start with the New Krypton stories

Batman I wouldn't come near for a while, maybe with Battle of the Cowl

JLA isn't really in any major storylines right now, so just jump on at the beginning of whatever arc

Robin is going to be cancelled shortly

X-Men, maybe start with Uncanny 500? It's the start of the new status quo

I'd like to apologize ahead of time if this gets too long, but in an effort to provide as much information about my dilemma as possible, it might end up being just that. (edit: it did, sorry)

I'm 32 and haven't really picked up a comic book since I was a young teen. For a more exact time frame of when I purchased my last comic, it was when Marvel had the big Inferno shindig where Colossus' little sister became the Queen of the Damned and Archangel got his shiny, hard wings or some shenanigans like that. If I screwed those facts up too bad, cut me a little slack. It's been a few years.

So, fast forward many moons to 2008. Diggnation was my "gateway drug" to Revision3. Somewhere in there, I watched an episode of Ifanboy on a whim (specifically the episode with the topic on political titles). Well, the one solitary "comic" I've read between my teen years and now was Channel Zero by Brian Wood, which happened to be a title with a sharp political slant. So, on yet another whim, I wrote in. I was, honestly, amazed that Josh took the time to write back to me. It was totally unexpected and really carried weight. Josh jokingly mentioned, "You should read more comics though." And that was all I needed to totally get my spark for the comics art glowing again, I guess. I've taken the time to watch a lot of back episodes of Ifanboy to try and get a feel for where a good entry point might be. There was, however, one problem stopping me, and I couldn't put my finger on what it was, until I saw the back episode where Josh, Ron, and Conor were answering viewer mail whilst grilling in the backyard in sweltering heat. A viewer had written in asking about any titles that were complete and succinct without much crossover or open-endedness. And that's my issue.

You see, the reason I quit collecting comics in the first place when I was young is because (unknown to me then) I have obsessive-compulsive disorder. It simply drives me batshit to have unfinished things in my life. So, I think the first thing I ever picked up was an issue of Captain America because A friend of mine in school gave it to me. Then I realized, "Oh, look at this, the Cap'n is a member of something called The Avengers." Then of course, I had to get every issue of all the solo titles of all the Avengers. Then it was the West Coast Avengers and all their solo titles. For a period of about two years, I was pretty much grabbing every X-men/X-factor/New Mutants/Avengers/West Coast Avengers related title, and all the solo titles. And of course, if there was ever a note on the page about "See Spiderman issue #123 for the details on this," then I had to go get that too, and poof, now I'm collecting Spiderman every month. Back then, most books were $.75 an issue, but for someone my age, that was a LOT of money every month. I think that titles were starting to go to a buck per issue about the same time I got out of collecting. It didn't help that my yet unidentified OCD was driving me to start working backwards collecting back issues. My poor mother tried to keep up and be supportive of my comics "habit", but there just wasn't enough money to go around. Perhaps it was a good thing that we had a water pipe burst in a wall which wiped out my entire collection. At that point, I never bought another comic. It was a good stopping point.

Enough rambling backstory on me. The point is I'm much older now and that whole OCD thing is pretty well managed and under control, in that it no longer sends me into panic attacks when I don't have something complete, but rather, just irks me and annoys me into disgust. From what I've seen, the quality of comics has improved vastly. My wife and I had a dinner date with friends this evening, and we had some time to kill before we met up. There was a Barnes and Noble bookstore nearby, so we stopped in, and I spent about 45 minutes checking out what I *think* are classified as 'trades' now. Based on the recommendations from the Ifanboys about the Sandman 'universe' being pretty closed-off with a limited number of spin-offs, I grabbed Preludes and Nocturnes.

Now, taking all this into account, I'd like to be able to speak intelligently about my hobby and know what I'm getting into. I certainly don't expect anybody to jump through hoops to type novels (like this one) to try and provide me with answers. Rather, I would GREATLY appreciate if people could provide some information and/or links to the web locations they use to get information for to fuel their comics enthusiasm. I'm fully aware that the web is full of sites that provide info, but I'm also fully aware that there are probably a few sites that most fans generally regard as much better than others. Why spend 10 hours reading every site Google throws at me when I can just ask people already in the know? I guess I'm just looking for a great website that explains comics and the comic industry in layman's terms on a complete noob level. Someplace that I can go to research a comic title and know if it's been rebooted or if it has four or five different titles running concurrently that have nothing to do with each other as far as continuity. Some place where I can go get a definition of what all this hoopla is about with the "ultimate" universe in Marvel. In short, a place to get info to cut through the confusion that befalls a complete noob who looks at a shelf of comics and is utterly confused and befuddled why a given title has a gazillion different collections and offshoots, and ultimately hangs his head in despair because he doesn't know where to begin.

And also, I'd like some recommendations from others for titles that are small universes and not hard to keep track of. I want my comic experience to be like a movie experience. I want to come in at the ground floor, have rising action and exposition, conflict, and then falling action and ultimately, a resolution, and not have some reference made to some crap that I would have known if I had seen this other movie with a different title first. It's perfectly fine if that arc takes place over several issues, or is even still ongoing, just as long as it isn't a spiderweb of storyline that takes me from Seattle to Los Angeles by way of Maine in the process. Not once when I was watching The Sopranos did I ever feel like I had to watch Family Guy to get the whole story, y'know. That's what I want in a comics story. A small, mostly self-contained and only self-referencing storyline.

I know this has been a long-winded ramble. To any that made it this far, and especially anybody that helps me out, thank you so much. I mean that sincerely. I'd really like to get back into enjoying this art form, and really, I feel like I need a little help to do it, because as it stands right now, I'm pretty lost. And if anybody needs to know what I'm into.... I can't answer. I simply don't know. I'm willing to give anything a try. Some of the newer version of the show have given me some good ideas though. Oh, that reminds me.... I live in a crap military town, which means, no comics shop that I know of. Anybody know of a good webstore to purchase from? I know Ron runs a shop.... if anybody has a link, and they sell online, I'd love to support him.

You should post what type of things you are into to help with the suggestions but just reading what you wrote I will try to make a few.

If you liked Brian Wood's Channel Zero you might like his other political ongoing series DMZ (http://brianwood.com/blog/dmz/). Another great political comic (which was featured in the the politics iFanboy episode) is Ex Machina (http://www.dccomics.com/wildstorm/graphic_novels/?gn=2500) written by Brian K. Vaughan.

You also put you watched The Sopranos so assuming you like crime drama's Scalped (http://www.dccomics.com/vertigo/graphic_novels/?gn=7722) is a great pick.

So to tackle the last part of your question. I find the best place to buy trades and graphic novels online are InStockTrades (http://instocktrades.com/default.aspx) and Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/). For buying single issues I usually go to MyComicShop.com (http://www.mycomicshop.com/
).

Now if you don't have a local comic shop in your area to buy current issues online I know a lot of people use Discount Comic Book Service (http://www.dcbservice.com/). I have never used it though so I cant really comment on it.

- Hope that helps.

Friggin' awesome! Thanks so much. I was actually keeping an eye out this evening for DMZ since Josh mentioned it in his offline response to me, but.... well, B&N isn't the best comics selection under the sun. It was really just an orgy of Batman and Marvel (recent) movie related titles. They did have a few various Fable-related collections, and I am interested in sampling that, but I didn't feel like I had enough info to grab the right one and start at the beginning.

As far as what I'm into and not into...

I'm not opposed completely to a "caped superhero" title, but I think I would find them a bit "unrealistic" (if there is a thing with comics) the majority of the time and hard to get into. I'm thinking that I'd be more into titles that have a universe that makes 'sense' of sorts. The Sandman, which I'm reading now, makes more of a complete thought overall since it presents characters in a universe that those characters fit in and are appropriate to, as opposed to, say, the Marvel universe where there are all these flamboyant caped hooligans running around, doing their superhero thing, and everyday citizens are just like, "Well, there goes Captain Purple People Eater defending us from that dastardly bad guy The Iron Monkey Foot. Oh, he threw him into 17 cars and destroyed a building. And, there's my bus, I'm late for work."

It works as a novelty for me, but I can't suspend belief enough to get into something where taking out a city block every 4 pages is par for the course and nobody thinks twice about it. A buddy of mine let me borrow Watchmen about a month ago, however, and I found that decent. It didn't stir any feelings of wanting to read it on a regular basis, but as far as a title with caped folks, it was alright. It was enough of a realistic spin that I could get into it.

I guess the best way to put it would be that I think I'd prefer titles and stories where if things above a garden variety are happening, it's either big news, or that universe is created differently than our own actual reality and it makes more plausible sense and fits in appropriately.

The B&N did, however, have some trades (hope I'm using the term correctly) for 30 Days of Night. I flipped through and found the art absolutely mindblowing. I can see where the comments about Ben Templesmith's art stem from. I intend to go back and sample that, since I know that's a closed story with a finite ending. I only had so much cash on me, and it was either that or the Sandman book.

I'm also really interested in some of the Indie titles that Conor, Josh, and Ron have highlighted recently. All-in-all, I'm more interested in fresh plots and avenues of approaching comics than the tried-and-true 'take these 30 good guys and face them off against these 30 bad guys indefinately' scheme.

Thanks again for the info and links!! I'm open to more, of course.

Ron doesn't run a comic shop. It's odd, this isn't the first time someone has said he does.

I'm probably wrong, but I would swear that in the discussion about comic prices in episode 77, Ron stated that he runs a comic shop. I seem to remember him saying it somewhere else too. *shrug* Like I said, I'm probably wrong. Maybe I was just hoping and transposed in my own words coming out of his mouth.

And thanks for getting me moved to the right thread. I had not posted here originally because I wasn't hoping for recommendations so much as I was hoping to get some links to resources where I could develop my own recommendations. But if you deem me more appropriate here, then thy will be done. Sorry for creating the extra work for ya.

I just picked up my first comic today. I guess you could call it a trade paperback because it is The Punisher: Born from Max Comics. I am loving it and I can't wait to get paid so I can go get more. Can you recommend some comics for me. I am going to be picking up Watchmen, From Hell, Transmetropolitan, and the rest of The Punisher.

The books you list are all good places to start. I'd research the Punisher stuff a little bit more before you buy. He's been around quite a while, so some of the things out there can be pretty bad.

Pretty much anything that Ennis has written for Punisher is great. If you have the money, pick up the Garth Ennis Punisher Omnibus (http://www.instocktrades.com/product.aspx?id=10e&pid=9092), as it collects his best Punisher stories in one thick volume.

I second the Ennis Punisher. I have the Omnibus and it's really fun. Also check out the MAX run as well, I would say what I've read between the two the MAX title is better. If you like Ennis, I highly recommend the Ghost Rider that he did, fantastic. Also if you're looking for classics The Dark Knight Returns is also great.

Always glad to hear when someone else starts reading. Welcome to the community zachtsilvey. There's a lot out there and a lot of good stuff. It's best to start reading a bunch of stuff from the Library since most have good collections and see what you like.

I will second this.

Of course, I have not had the time to check anything out myself and my office is even in the library...how pathetic is that? :)

I work less then a mile from the library and had to go there for work a few times. I still don't even have a library card. So I wouldn't say its that bad.

Hey everyone,

So my situation: I was heavily into comics just about a year ago; I read pretty much everything, from super hero books to the weekly recommended indie titles.

But then life happened, and I'm sure that most of you know how that goes. I fell out of touch with what was going on in the world of comics, had a hard time finding time to read my weekly books, and just had to cancel my pullbox completely.

Things have settled down lately and I'm itching to jump back into things... but after missing a year (and then some), I'm not sure what I missed. I won't be jumping back into singles anytime soon and will be following up on the series I read before, but is there anything I should just skip completely? I'd like to check out my old super hero books again, but I'm not sure if any crazy event storylines have made them convoluted.

And I'm especially curious to hear about any lesser known trades that have been a hit lately? I'm willing to try anything if it's good.

Here's what I'll be catching up on (off the top of my head):

-Fables
-Ex Machina
-Ultimate Spider-Man
-New Avengers and Mighty Avengers
-Daredevil
-Captain America
-Iron Fist
-Invincible
-Walking Dead
-Local
-Captain America
-Fell
-The Spirit

Thanks in advance for any advice! It's honestly been pretty confusing trying to figure out things from where I left off, but I'm looking forward to ordering some books from Amazon and getting back into the iFanboy community.
