I'm not opposed completely to a "caped superhero" title, but I think I would find them a bit "unrealistic" (if there is a thing with comics) the majority of the time and hard to get into. I'm thinking that I'd be more into titles that have a universe that makes 'sense' of sorts. The Sandman, which I'm reading now, makes more of a complete thought overall since it presents characters in a universe that those characters fit in and are appropriate to, as opposed to, say, the Marvel universe where there are all these flamboyant caped hooligans running around, doing their superhero thing, and everyday citizens are just like, "Well, there goes Captain Purple People Eater defending us from that dastardly bad guy The Iron Monkey Foot. Oh, he threw him into 17 cars and destroyed a building. And, there's my bus, I'm late for work."

Wow. I've found my twin.

Some books you might like:

DMZ
Ex Machina
House of Mystery
Strangers In Paradise
Echo
Doktor Sleepless
Black Summer (it's superhero but different)
Demo
Local
I Kill Giants
Four Eyes
Losers
No Hero
Lovers and Madmen (awesome batman/joker story)
FreakAngels
We3
Fell
Maus
Umbrella Academy
Locke & Key
Unknown Soldier
Dead Space

And I'm especially curious to hear about any lesser known trades that have been a hit lately? I'm willing to try anything if it's good.

I Kill Giants has been a surprise hit this year for a lot of people. It's not yet out in trade though. It's a 7 issue mini and I think it's currently on #6. It's one of my favourite comics of the year easily.

I don't know if it's lesser known (it gets a lot of pulls for an indie) but Echo is another one you might want to check out. It's got one trade so far.

Dead Space was really great but too well known. Perhaps was dismissed because it's a game prequel. Art and story are fantastic in this... if you like mystery/thriller/horror.

Guerrillas has been a good surprise but won't be out in trade for ages and ages.

House of Mystery perhaps? It seems to be a love or hate thing. I love it.

Doktor Sleepless, Black Summer and Locke & Key.

A series that seems to be really underratted is the current unknown soldier. The third issue hits stands friday, and you could probably pick up the first two at any comic shop. It's really quite good.

Dear comic fans, i would like some advice. I'm relatively new to comic reading, to be honest i just finished my first (>3 frames) comic some days ago. Since I'm so new to this media I don't really know what content is out there and I would love to have some recommendations for my next reading/viewing experience.

To let you understand what genre I like i attached some frames of a short comic I loved - They are from a free online comic called Thick Description. What I liked about this comic was the B&W, the 1960's setting, mafia/detective theme and the coldness/grimness of the story. I hope this tells you a little of my preferences...

I'm excited to hear what new comic/content you guys recommend. If you have any questions I'll try to reply as soon as i can. Thank you all for your time!

Hey thanks for the link!
I'll definitely give it a look :)
But the list is enormous
do you have some ideas from

This Torso thing seems really interesting.
It says its a Image Comics, does that mean
there is no text? - EDIT - LOL my bad Image
Comics is just the publisher...

Torso is definitely on my list now!
(It even won some kind of award)
I had no idea that this kind of stuff
was available. I thought, like some
others, that comics are only about
super-heros (btw; love the Ironman,
and Dark Knight movie). But that never
seemed like my cup of tea. Im discovering
a whole new world like this, I'm so
enthusiastic!

Is there something out there that is a bit
like the BSG: Searider Falcon novel or,
and perhaps a better known reference,
something like Dixon Hill from Star Trek NG
(The detective Picard likes to play). And of
course in the style i described above...
-Just trying to get as many options as
possible - :)

So, after having been out of the game for years, I started reading comics about a year ago and have been making my way through all sorts of things. I've enjoyed wading into the Ultimate books from Marvel as they're easy to jump into and getting caught up doesn't take too long. I've also been eating up Powers, Invincible and a few other non-DC/Marvel books.

Most of my reading has been Marvel, Image or other small publishers. The DC stuff has been limited to a few of the Batman graphic novels or Kingdom Come. I would really like to start reading Batman and catch up before the battle for the cowl heats up, but I have no idea where to start to get caught up with Batman R.I.P. DC seems so inaccessible to me. I'm not sure why, it just is.

So, I put the question out to the iFanboy crowd, in which books and at what point do I need to go start in order to see the story arc for Batman R.I.P.? With all of the various Batman books I see on the racks at my local comic shop, which line is the main line of Batman books (if there is one)?

Thanks..sam

I am hoping this the right thread. I am not exactly new to comics, however i bouwed out of alot of titles in the 90's because i couldnt take where some of my favorite characters where going or how they were dressed. I have still been buying comics though although there are some characters i would really like to get back into but i was wondering if it would be better to just jump on, or should i grab a few trades.

I would really like to get back into the world of DC comics, especially Batman, but I am not sure with the death of bruce wayne if it is the time nor which books to pick up. Anyone have any ideas, I would love a suggestions. I am big fan of Frank Miller's run with Batman (who isn't?) and i used to be a big fan of the Teen titans but really cant stomach the latest incarnation. I did however really enjoy the Year One TPB are there any plans to have that as a series?

Optic Nerve

I just read a graphic novel called "Shortcomings" and only just now did I realize it was a collection of "Optic Nerve" comics. I wish I'd realized, going in, that it was a bunch of mini-comics strung together. I got frustrated with it because I thought it was a long-form narrative and expected more of a plot. I wish publishers would do a better job of contextualizing comics like this when they put them together.

I'm still not sure I would have liked it (I thought it was well-observed and I liked the art but it didn't really speak to me) -- but it would have helped me understand what I was reading.

Would you mind saying a little more about what you like about the series?

That's really strange. My roommate, who isn't a comic fan, was just taking about Shortcomings and how he was going to pick it up. It was the first time I'd heard of it, and I honestly have tabs open right now researching it.

@Caroline I actually read Optic Nerve in single issues which I think is actually a better way to check it out. Local in a way reminded me of it. What I liked about Optic Nerve in singles was the small snippets of slice of moments that each issue had.

That makes sense. I could definitely see this working in a minicomics format. It just reads a little oddly as a graphic novel, especially since it seems to start out later in the series (and there was no indication of that on the book).

Well, I defer to Conor here but I'd say you don't need to read anything. You know Batman in general. I assume you know the original Robin, Dick Grayson/Nightwing. Jason Todd was his replacement who was thought dead at the hands of the Joker. He got better. Damian is Batman's biological son by the daughter of one of his chief enemies. Tim Drake is the current Robin and possibly a better detective than Dick Grayson. That's about it. All you really need to know is that everyone thinks Batman is dead and will come to the conclusion that Gotham needs Batman. Who will take on what identity?

All the character stuff should be understandable as you read the new stories.

I totally picked this book up at the library and had no idea that it was a collection of single issues!! I knew it was from the same person as Optic Nerve, but that was it. I didn't really enjoy it either. Though maybe with this new found knowledge I might pick it up again some time later

Hi all, I've posted in this thread before but not in...I'd say at least a year. I was getting into Invincible and Y: The Last Man (both of which I've got a few trades of, just haven't had the cash to finish them) and tried to get into Queen and Country, but I need to actually sit down and clear my mind when reading those. Definitely not a "subway" book if you catch my drift.

So I suppose my question is, what's come out in recent times that's worth reading? I tried to read Final Crisis, but that was just plain dumb. I heard good things about I Kill Giants and want to read that, as well as start the new Umbrella Academy books (first series was great!).

As for my preferences, I have none really, just something that isn't lined with continuity.

[EDIT] What about titles like Suburban Glamour, Supermarket, Strangers in Paradise, or Ghost World. Anything along those lines would be pretty cool. Not restricting you to that specifically, but if you've got something in the same vein, by all means share it.

I sat down and read all of I Kill Giants again, and I think it read better as issues with some room to breathe than it does as a trade. That may just be me, but I'd think about trying that. Either way, yes, it's quite good -- especially the art.

Strangers in Paradise is amazing. Echo is going good too. Yes, I Kill Giants is definitely worth picking up... it's got me hooked on Joe Kelly. I thought Suburban Glamour was ok.

Locke & Key is excellent.

I'm not too keen on superheroes and have never read any X-Men comics or even seen the films but X-Men Magneto Testament is one of the best comics I've ever read. You don't need to know anything about X-Men to read this. It's about Magneto when he was a young boy living through the invasion of nazis during WW2. All "real life" stuff - no superpowers or anything like that. It's truly a great read.

Surprisingly the Dead Space game prequel was really good.

You might like Demo and Local by Brian Wood. He also does DMZ - one of my favourite ongoing titles.

What else? Fell, Black Summer, FreakAngels, all by Warren Ellis. And Ex Machina. And RASL.

That should do.

I got a question and I think asking it here is the best place to ask. I have a friend that has never read a comic before and they want to know the best starting place to go from. Well if he wants to go the Superhero route, he could read stuff like the All Star Superman trades or something very easy to get into. If he wants to read Superhero books, it's going to be very tough to get into as it's mostly based on continuity. I'd recommend he read something like Invincible if he wants a caped crusader. I've been a fringe reader (pick up when I want) and I can help more if you give a bit more to work with (i.e. his tastes).

Oh, and the obligatory READ WATCHMEN!1!11!eleven1!

Hey people -

I am returning to comics after a long...long...absence. When I stopped reading/collecting was when Image was getting started. But...I am back. But I am a bit lost. I first stepped into my LCS two weeks ago and decided I seem to be partial to Marvel (I did not see anything in DC that seemed to peak my interest...except for possibly Green Lantern). But...it seems that every Marvel comic I picked up has a Dark Reign tie in. I have since learned this has to do with Secret Invasion of last summer. I have subsequently purchased the series (it has not arrived yet). I am picking up bits and pieces about what happened. I have these comics so far: The Dark Avengers #1 and #2, The New Avengers #50, Secret Warriors #1 and #2, New Avengers Re-union #1 (I also have Captain America #45,#46, #47 which I think to be totally awesome). Now...my question to you all is...what other comics can I be looking at to get a good grasp on what is happening in the Marvel Universe? Or...just some good reads. Any and all comments appreciated. Thanks.

Before diving into the continuity quagmires of the big two, sample.... everything else. (The big two aren't bad, I just wanted to say "continuity quagmires"). But seriously, you're in a prime position to try out trades of all sorts of things. Invincible, Walking Dead, Hellboy, Fear Agent, Criminal, Bone, Fables, Deus Ex Machina, and all sorts of books that the iFanboys have covered in previous video shows.

There's all sorts of good reading collected out there, including stuff from Marvel and DC that is much cheaper to buy than individual issues. You can get heavy discounts at InStockTrades.com but I say go into a comic store that carries trade paperbacks and pick up something that feels interesting.

Have fun and save money at the same time.

Tad had some good suggestions. If you dig Cap you can pick up the collected Omnibus of Brubaker's Run - I don't know if the second one is out yet, but the first is spectauclar (It collects the first 25 issues.) Daredevil has had a similair street gritty tone and I think last week was the start of a new arch, do you could give that a try if you wanted.

Bendis has an eight year run on Dardevil that was collected. Pick up the first trade of that see if you dig it.

As far as DC goes, you could give the excellent All-star Superman a go. It's currentyl collected in 2 hardcovers and - the second of which was Josh's Book of the month, Give it a go as a nice self contained superman story. that requires no previous knowledge of the chracter and is independent of his current series.

You might also like Secret Idenitiy - b urt Busiek and Stuart Immomen, a single trade that you might be able to find on ebay or your LCS.

Tad is right though, jumo in in to Image and vertigo titles - some of which have been collected. I suggest Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, etc. Try a trade see if ya like it.

I am also going to throw in The Escapists, by Brian K. Vaughn from Dark horse. It's a fictional story about three friends who acquire the rights to publidh comics about a fictional superhero escape artist. It's a great istory and givess you a feel for the sensibility of modern comics - supehero and otherwise. The digest sized hardcover is avialable from Dark Horse comics. It's on Amzon for $13

Okay this is longer than I thought.

I am completely new to comics. I've only ever owned 1 comic book; it was a MegaDeth comic in the early 90's that a friend left at my house.

I recently bought Sandman Vol. 1 because I enjoyed Gaiman's American Gods and Good Omens, but I have wanted to get into comics for a while. List price for the Sandman books puts the series at over $200. Amazon brings that price down and if I can find them used I can probably cut it in half, but I'm use to paying $3.00 for used Sci-Fi, fantasy, and techno-thriller paperbacks. Paying $100 to read a story, even a long multi-volume story (Dark Tower, Foundation, Dresden Files, Lord of the Rings, etc.), is not something that I would have previously considered and am having difficulty justifying the cost. My used book store is fairly huge and even they don't seem to have much of a selection and what they do have is more manga than not. Besides Amazon where are good places to pick up used trades?

If I can get past the cost there are a number of other books that I think I would also like to read. I know I'd probably like The Batman trades (esp. Batman Year One, Killing Joke, The Dark Knight Returns), V for Vendetta and Sin City.

I’m looking for other recommendations, here's some information you might base your recommendations on:

Here is what I like:
- Comic book movies that I really liked were V for Vendetta, Sin City, Iron Man, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, X-Men I, and most things Batman.
- Other movies, a random selection of my Netflix 5 Stars: Dark City, Enemy of the State, Falling Down, Reservoir Dogs, Last Man Standing, Little Shop of Horrors, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Planet of the Apes (original version), Scream, Star Wars
- TV, a random selection of my Netflix 5 Stars: Coupling, Deadwood, Firefly, Hustle, Heroes, The Prisoner, The Shield, Smallville, South Park, Stargate SG-1
- Books: My Top 3 novels of all time: 1984, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.
- Book Genres/Authors:
Techno-thriller writers like Michael Crichton and Neal Stephenson.
Science fiction writers like Robert Heinlein, Ray Bradbury, and Douglas Adams
Fantasy writers like Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, and Jim Butcher
Other writers like Arthur Conan Doyle and Fyodor Dostoevsky
- I like Dystopia, Mythology, Politics, Noir, Cynicism, and Pythonesque humor
- I also have an affinity for villains. A well written villain often makes a well written story. The government as villain is also usually a good plot point. I would also love a good trade recommendation with Lex Luthor as the villain.

Here is what I don't like or don't want:
- I hate Spiderman, well not hate but I have no time for it. I can't stand Mary Jane and the movie villains were just lame. He seems like a clingy whiny little putz. Oh, and I hate the phrase "with great power comes great responsibility"; having an equivocation fallacy as your focal mantra is just retarded.
- I don't want to be entangled in the Marvel or DC universes. Gotham city and the basic Batman characters (Gordon, Robin, Alfred, and the basic villains) are fine, Green Lantern or Jimmy Olsen showing up in a Batman book is not. Same with a Superman book - Smallville and Metropolis along with Lois, Jimmy, Lex, Zod, and Jor-El are fine but Wonder Woman and Hawkman are not. The same idea applies to the Marvel Universe but I'm not very familiar with Marvel so I don't know how entangled it is and if this is even possible. This crap has already shown up as a distraction in Sandman Vol. 1. The name John Constantine shows up on page 85 and I just keep thinking 'I know that name, why the fuck do I know that name?'... then 'Fucking Keanu Reeves, damn it!' I've never even watched that movie. Now I have to Wikipedia up this guy (he's got his own movie, he must be important) and then try to disentangle Keanu from my vision of the character.
- While I do like Sci-fi and Fantasy mixing the two rarely impresses me. Magic in space seems especially stupid. The whole exploring space and/or accomplishing things through science and ingenuity is negated by the "it's magic" answer which can become a substitute for a viable explanation at any point in the story.
- Jack Bower - Fuck Him. Fascist Propaganda. If you tell me something is like 24, I aint reading it. Don't say books are like 24...unless they really are.
- I don't want anything with a message that says you alone individually can make a difference...but only if there are more like you...and in fact you really have to be a majority to really do anything...but you can make the difference. ugh.
- No groundhogs (people making the same mistakes over and over and over again and again and again without ever learning or growing).
- I'm against certain stereotypical villains - the evil Russians, the evil Japs, the evil Muslims. On the other hand there can be good stereotypical villains such as mad scientists, megalomaniacs, vengeful ex-lovers, etc.
- I have serious issues with the idea of patriotism in any form other than historical.
- No talking animals and/or people with powers to talk to animals. Controlling animals with thought is okay like controlling the weather or inanimate material but not conversing on any level more than me telling my dog to get off the bed. There are rare exceptions i.e. Animal Farm.
- I get irritated with stories where collateral damage is not taken seriously. A protagonist who destroys property (and/or people) willy-nilly should quickly find himself the antagonist of the society.
- Lastly I'm not interested in buying weekly comics, just trades/ogn.

You could try cheapasstrades.com. You can think of it sort of like an alibris for comics. I don't think they actually sell anything, the just collect ads from all sorts of used books sites to help you find the cheapest available price. Only downside is you can't ever get a bulk rate on shipping, becuase you're buying everything individually.

I'm slowly getting back into comics, most of which is Marvel since I was a Spiderman, X-Men, Iron Man kid back in the day. I've picked up trades of the main books of recent Marvel events, but am wondering if any of the other tie-in trades are worth it. Specifically, I'm asking about Disassembled, House of M, Civil War, and World War Hulk.

First sorry for the long post.

Hello everyone, I've been looking to get into Hellblazer recently. I like the concept of the character. I was wondering where you guys would recommend I start. I heard somewhere that the story is pretty much just a pick up anywhere and you can go. Is there any chronological order to it at all or does it just jump around each TPB? Because if there is a chronological order I'd like to follow that if I could, just to see the character evolve.

I would also like some of your guy's recommendations for other comics. I'd be more interested in comics that are in TPB form. I've read Transmetropolitan and The Walking Dead and loved them both. I read through Preacher and while I enjoyed the story arc and liked it very much, I don't see myself returning to it any time soon. I started DMZ and didn't care for it too much. I read he first Fables and liked it quite a bit. The other one I enjoyed was the Fall of Cthulhu series.

I'm not too fond of super hero comics, but I'm not against them. I just haven't found anything I'm interested in. I'd prefer a story that has an over arcing plot but I don't mind ones that have several plots. I just hate the ones that have a plot this book, then next one they jump to something else entirely that's not connected to anything else that has happened. So I'd prefer a big adventure, or a story following one person or a group of people going off on adventures.

I hope that made sense, and I thank anyone in advance who suggest something.

Well, it's a bit of an inside joke amounst comic fans that hellblazer trades are shit. The place I would probably start would be with Dangerous Habits by Garth Ennis. Good starting point as any. I'd also check out Alan Moore's Swamp thing. As for other series' all I can say, is give Preacher another shot. Once you finish the second trade, if you are still luke warm, then I suppose you may finish, but untill then, please, for yourself, keep reading. Otherwise, maybe Y: the last man or Ex Machina.

Y: The Last Man is my usual safe suggestion, also if you liked Hellblazer you might like Hellboy, also if you like long arching stories you can't go wrong with Neil Gaiman's Sandman. I also suggest you check out Preacher's second trade, I think I only know one person who liked the series from the first trade its usually the second one that people get into. I'd also suggest you stick with Fables, it's not my cup of tea but if you liked the first trade you'll most likely like the rest.

Ok let me rephrase myself on one of the points. I've read through all of Preacher's trades. I really liked the story and everything. My only issue is that it sits on my shelf and I don't see it as a book I'm ever going to read through again like I have with others.

As for the comment on Hellblazer trades being shit, what do you mean by that? Is Hellblazer just not good or something?

Thanks again

I'm slowly getting back into comics, most of which is Marvel since I was a Spiderman, X-Men, Iron Man kid back in the day. I've picked up trades of the main books of recent Marvel events, but am wondering if any of the other tie-in trades are worth it. Specifically, I'm asking about Disassembled, House of M, Civil War, and World War Hulk.

To be totally honest, I can't think of any of the tie-in trades for those events having much value after the events themselves were over. I thought 'Civil War: Iron Man' was decent, and I recall 'World War Hulk: X-Men' being pretty fun. But are any of these going to add much to the experience of the main event, after it's over? Probably not. 'Secret Invasion' seemed to be something of a different case, though, and those trades are starting to come out, but I don't know if you want/need recommendations for that.

I've always enjoyed the films and animated series based off Marvel/DC, and I was impressed by No Man's Land when I read it for a class. I'd like to try comics. I was a big fan of the Spider-Man and Iron Man movies (and the 90s Spider-Man and Batman cartoons) and I was a Green Lantern Fan as a kid. Other favorite shows include Dollhouse (or anything Whedon) and Pushing Daisies. I've ordered the first three volumes of Ultimate Spider-Man, and I'm thinking about picking up Green Lantern: Rebirth and/or Secret Origins (an acquaintance was going nuts over Sinestro Corps War and has been hyping In Blackest Night, but I don't want to be completely lost. Would I probably be okay for In Blackest Night if I just read those three GL stories?) and possibly the first volume of Astonishing X-Men. Does anyone have any other recs?

Honestly, you could get Sinestro Corp war and be fine. If you really wanted some backround, read secret origin first, then sinestro corp. Also, pick up Brubaker's cap stuff.

What would really help is if you could give us some more details about the type of stuff that you're into now. Spider-Man is a completely different (and much better) comic than what it was in the 90s. Do you like action, sci-fi, cosmic, street level heroes, etc.? Are you partial to one company over another? Do you read independent publishers? What TV shows and movies are you into?

Comics is a mighty beast. Details help us tame it to your tastes.

Whenever someone who wants to get into Marvel comics with no or just a rudimentary knowledge of the Marvel characters, I always give them House of M. It features most of the familiar faces, has an interesting and gripping story, and sets up all the recent X-Men stories from then on. From there, people can jump off onto New Avengers, New X-Men (Kyle/Yost run is one of my favorite runs), Messiah Complex and more. It's the perfect Marvel primer.

Have you tried the Buffy comics? Season 8 has been strong. There have also been a couple neat Firefly minis, notably "Better Days." I know the Angel comics also have a devoted following, though I haven't checked those out myself.

Pick up the next issue that comes out and you should be fine. Or pick up the last 3 (?) I think which are a complete story. Also, Marvel is pretty good at putting their storylines out in collected form fairly quickly, so if you prefer the trade paperback approach, you should be able to find the last few of those with no problem.

You could probably pick up next issue and be fine, cause it's a new arc, but do yourself a favor and get the trades or the omnibus.

This week, I've finally decided to jump in to the world of comics. After, falling in love with iFanboy, Tom Vs The Flash and Around Comics, I have decided to bite the bullet, and not worry about continuity and jump into the realm of comics, with these books:

Green Lantern
Batman: Battle For The Cowl
Superman: World of New Krypton
Flash: Rebirth
Invincible Iron Man
Irredeemable
J.S.A
Captain America
Green Lantern Corps
Captain Britain
Action Comics
Detective Comics
Amazing Spider-Man
New Avengers
Nova
Secret Six
Guardians of the Galaxy
Hellblazer
Uncanny X-Men

I have compiled this list from recommendations and reviews from iFanboy. And I just want to know your thoughts on these books and my decision to jump into comics without worrying about continuity.

My only comment is that, that's a shitload of books. I don't pull that much in issues and I consider myself a regular reader. And it's way too much superhero (and almost complete Marvel+DC)

Try these:
The Goon
Invincible (if there is a superhero book you should be reading, it's this)
Savage Dragon (and this one you can pretty much jump on with 145-146, or get the free issue 148)
Walking Dead (start in trade though)
Criminal
Incognito (might want to wait for trade)
Battlefields (new story starting soon)

Hmmm. Well, I'm not sure why you'd be holding back from reading comics if you had an interest in them. If you want to read comics, just read 'em.

I'm surprised that someone who hasn't even read comics would be thinking about things like continuity.

Don't worry about "too many superhero books." If that's what you like, go for it. But if you like other genres, there is a TON of stuff out there. Looks like a pretty strong list to me.

I dunno, it just seems to me a new reader shouldn't just jump in to the same ol, same ol. At least try some of Image's superhero stuff. And I'll add Dynamo 5 in the list of comics to check out, after I read the great first trade yesterday.

I think what you consider the "same 'ol same 'ol" some people find really appealing. As commercial as some may consider it, the Big Two are actually both doing some pretty good books at the moment. And some people prefer the capes and tights in a bigger universe with a long history.

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of Indie and small publisher stuff that I really dig (Strangers in Paradise is one of my favorite stories of all time in any medium.) But just because a story's about superheroes in bright costumes in the Marvel/DC universe doesn't mean it's wanting in quality or follows some cookie-cutter story format.

I think you have a great list. If you're lost in the any of the books you can simply Wiki what you need to know. It really is easy to get caught up in just about anything. I think miyamoto's list of independent stuff is all good as well if you feel like adding those things.

Congrats on taking the plunge. I hope you're finding it as enjoyable as we do. We always like to welcome a new member to our brood. :)

Just because two books are both in the Superhero genre doesn't really make the the same. Captain America isn't the same book as Thor, which isn't the same book as Fantastic Four, which isn't the same book as Wolverine, etc.

Stories can be in the same genre but be VASTLY different.

But I do think if a new reader was going to jump into a huge list of super-hero books, Invincible should be on that list. I'm reading it in hardcovers myself (Is volume 4 EVER going to be available ANYWHERE again?), but if the OP doesn't care about continuity and having to catch up, that would be a book to dive into.

So, I'm fairly a newbie comic fan (past year). I collected comics when I was a kid, but only for the cover art, and occasionally for the interior art. Anyways, I find that I am very much a DC-person. I love batman (Arkham Asylum, Killing Joke, Year One, and even enjoying the current BFTC run). I've also gotten into the Green Lantern stories (Rebirth, Sinestro Corp, etc.) and all the cool Superman ones (Allstar I & II, All Seasons ...). Y: Last Man has been my favorite non-DC thing. There are tons more, as I have read Watchmen, and pretty much most of the classics ...

Basically I want to follow a Marvel story that will not drag me for years and years and then back stab me like Spiderman with Brand New Day. I would much rather have non-canon stories that are awesome. Vertigo & other companies would be cool too.

p.s. I have read Fables & Preacher ... The latter I will get book #2, former .. not sure.

Any suggestions?

A good and short (and pretty goofy) Marvel story would be Warren Ellis' Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. Its only about 12 issues, and its not really grounded in Marvel continuity, but it uses some of the lower-tier characters and is a parody of the typical beat-em-up stories we normally see. It's pretty damn hysterical, I highly recommend it.

Let's see, what else...Ed Brubaker's Criminal is quite good, and so is Savage Dragon, which is a pretty fun superhero-ish book. I also can't recommend Stormwatch (Warren Ellis' issues) and The Authority enough. It's a Wildstorm book, and its so much fun to read! Be sure to start at the beginning, I'm sure you'll find it a blast!

I'm wanting to read more Batman but I don't know if it'll be my thing. I started reading Secret Six for example and got extremely bored even though I loved the 1st issue. I'm not into stuff that leads up to some big fight or "event". I'm not into cliff-hangers at the end of an issue that means next issue will be a big fight between some villian and hero.

I've read The Killing Joke (really liked it), Lovers and Madmen (loved it - one of my fave stories), and the recent Arkham one-shot (loved it, wish it was ongoing). I tried to read The Long Halloween but couldn't get into it but I'm thinking that might be because I wasn't well when I tried reading it so I'll go back to that one. I didn't think the Joker HC was very good. Cacophony might be the worst I've read of Batman and I didn't really like the Batman Confidential series called "Rights".

Hmm, that's a lot of not liking.

Anyway I'm still interested but it might just not be for me. Could I read BFTC without having read RIP? I'm just not sure of the idea behind BFTC interests me. Hmmm.

Have you read Batman: Arkham Asylum? You should try it, it's my favorite Batman book. The old Denny Oneal/Neal Adams batman comics were great too. You can get some on Amazon.

I started collecting battle for the cowl before actually finishing "The Black Glove" or RIP. Also it would help if you read Son of the Batman and also know what happens in Final Crisis. To me it doesn't take anything away as long as you know what has happened. I kind of know what happened and have been enjoying BFTC.

As far as RIP goes, I am a new comic fan myself, and I know for sure you need to read Son of Batman, Black Glove, and Final Crisis to fully enjoy RIP ... if you enjoy it at all.

So I am new to comics. I got started with the Civil War event recently when a friend loaned me his trades. After doing research on the web and podcasts I decided to come up with my own pull list (and I get a 20% discount if I pull 10 or more titles at my LCS). So here is my list:

Thor
Immortal Iron Fist
New Avengers
Captain Britain and MI13
Incredible Hercules
Exiles
The Outsiders
Batman
Batman and Robin
Batman: Streets of Gotham

I know I know, really cliched and Batman heavy. I am really liking the direction they are going in BFTC. That's what the last 3 are for.

I noticed a bunch of people go for and talk about the indie titles. Now I have done a bit of research and I know that the Dark Reign titles (New Avengers, Dark Avengers...) are selling well, but no one talks about them, why is that?

Thanks

Don't get me wrong, they are both good books, but they haven't really done anything to WOW the reader in awhile. Plus theres alot of Bendis haters for some reason. You should check them out though, New Avengers is on the fast track to becoming good again. There was a point between Civil War and the end of Secret Invasion where the book was in major MEH territory. Definatly a good look now.

Okay, I've been reading a bunch of Joe Casey & Tom Scioli's Godland, and I've been absolutely loving it. It's such a fun mix of superheroics and cosmic gobbledy gook with more then a pinch of humor. Now I feel I've gotten something of an itch for cosmic Jack Kirby styled comics.

I'm already planning on trying to catch up all the way with Godland (I've got up to issue 20, it's on issue 27 currently), but what else would you recommend as the best of this brand of Kirby style cosmic superhero comics? The first Fourth World Omni seems like a good start, and when I can afford it I'll probably go after one of the Fantastic Four Omnis, but what else would you recommend?

Hey guys,

Over the past year my interest in comics has been re-kindled after something like a 10 year absence.

Back then, I used to read mainly Wolverine, X-Men and Gen13.

I bought the odd graphic novel here and there since then, including Watchmen and V for Vendetta, both of wish I ashamedly admit I've not read! *cowers* (I am about half way through Watchmen at the moment though!)

I guess what got me back into it all was when last year for valentines day, my girlfriend bought me the first 3 volumes of The Walking Dead. She knew I liked zombies but not that I ever liked comics. I read through all 3 that day and have since read right up to the current volume (can't wait for the next!).

About a month or 2 ago I was watching an old episode of Hak5 which had an ad for iFanboy so I checked it out, and I'm glad I did. Since then I've been buying comics as much as I can and trying to catch up with things I only read a bit of when I was younger. I love the show and have a lot of gratitude to give for the recommendations I've seen on there.

So other than Watchmen, I've recently been reading:

Nova TPB (Vol 1 & 2)
Superman Red Son
Sandman (Vol 1 & 2)
Wolverine
The Walking Dead
Y the Last Man (Vol 1 & 2)

I've also got, but not yet read:

Locke and Key (bought that today :))
Gotham Central #5: Dead Robin
V for Vendetta
Countdown to Final Crisis (Vol. 1)

I just got back into reading comics. I'm more interested in getting trades than getting single issues. I'm currently re-reading some of my favorites which include:

Preacher
Y: The Last Man
Ultimate Spider-man
Ultimate X-men
Ultimates
Danger Girl
Just a Pilgrim
Punisher

I was a big fan of Garth Ennis and Mark Millar. Are there any new series that I should know about?

Oh, and my girlfriend is starting to get into comics as well now. She just read all of Y: The Last Man in less than 2 weeks. She's wanting more now. I suggested Runaways to her. Are there any other books she would enjoy?

Thanks for the help guys.

If you like the over-the-top black comedy violence aspect of preacher and are looking for more Ennis, I would suggest The Boys. I have the first two trades of that and it is pretty funny. If you want more Mark Millar, I'd suggest Kick-Ass. It's pretty entertaining in kind of the same overblown violent but funny at the same time way.

So...Im 14 and im pretty new to comics but i alredy have some stuff (Walking Dead,Scott Pilgrim,Batman Long Halloween/Dark Victory and some other stuff) and i have a pretty big backlog for non Marvel/DC stuff but i REALLY dont know what i should jump into Marvel.
After seeing the MUA2 footage i really started to want to be more of a Marvel fan and there were a bunch of characters i never heard about (Iron Fist,Songbird and Luke Cage).
So the bottom line is what is some good Marvel stuff with a bunch of story i can read?Other publisher reccomendations are fine too.

For Marvel, I don't know why, but I really enjoyed the Ultimate series especially Ultimate Spiderman, Ultimate X-men and The Ultimates. I heard that later on the series got pretty dull, but I highly recommend at least reading the first two or three volumes of the series. Those books got me very interested in Mark Millar and Brian Michael Bendis which in turn got me into some of their other books.

I personalyy think the best books Marvel is publishing right now are Amazing Spider-Man, Invincible Iron Man, Mighty Avengers and New Avengers. I've heard great things about Captain America but am not currently reading it.

If you are looking for older stories in trade, I'd recommend Marvels, pretty much any Daredevil story from the last ten years, and if you want something with a huge body count of violence, I just re-read the Wolverine: Enemy of the State/Agent of SHIELD hardcover and that was a lot of fun.

This is not really a "get into Marvel proper" but more of a "get into Marvel as a publisher". Runaways HC vol.1 collects issues 1 - 18 of the first "season" which is the whole first season. But that's a commitment and if it sucks after three issues you're screwed. There are digest size books but I never saw them in person but from the iFanboy video show they don't look as good as the HC.

from iFanboy TheNextChampion recommends "Thor By J Michael Straczynski Prem Hc Vol 02" - didn't read it yet, but JMS's thor is nominated for an Eisner...

Not Marvel proper as well but it's good: Criminal TP #1 Coward - a crime story that focuses on one character which has a reputation as a coward - it's a heist planning and execution and what happens after it
. X-Men Die By The Sword TP is a nice spacey romp with a very strong villain and has nothing to do with the regular x-men. It has Morph in it so it's very funny - he and the villain are a great fit that results in hilarity.
Bullseye: Greatest Hits TP is predictable but enjoyable - sort of an interrogation of Bullseye because he stole some nuclear heads or some such...It shows you how fucked up Bullseye is.
Supreme Power is good as well - read only the MAX line, and towards the end it gets cluttered with characters and pushes the plot unnaturally towards them becoming a team, and from what I read in Wikipedia it seems that they did form a team, but the start is pretty good. It's a Superman story gone wrong sort of - what if Superman was raised by the government and the aliens that sent him aren't the Teletubbies?

Not really based on your taste, but more of a general "check those out" list.

I'm currently re-reading issues of Uncanny X-Men: Extinction Agenda. Would love to see an oversized hardcover, similar to Inferno and Mutant Massacre

Savage Dragon. Larsen has admitted the trades and their designs are all over the place. Do something like what McFarlane has done with Spawn.

Miracleman. Please someone figure out this mess and reprint these already.

One of the best series out there just now. I absolutely LOVE it!

The *only* Marvel I've read is Magneto Testament and it's one of my fave books now. It's an origins story about Magneto and you don't need to know any Marvel history to read it (I didn't). I bought this in singles and then the Hardcover. It's that good.

Is Immortal Iron Fist any good? And what Civil War/Secret Invasion parts are good?

I really enjoyed Immortal Iron Fist until about issue 25. The Brubaker/Fraction stuff is amazing. When Dwayne Swierczynski took over, it was good but lately he's bringing Iron Fist closer to his 70s type of story so I've lost a bit of interest there. Check out the first 3 trades or hardcovers to get the full Brubaker/Fraction run.

I only read the main Civil War story and it was pretty good. I have no interest in Secret Invasion and the New Avengers tie ins I've read bored me. Overall, New Avengers is a good book. I especially love the arc following Civil War.

The Runaways is good but I didn't like the Whedon arc. Buy the large hardcover as getting the individual trades is confusing as hell. That title has 3 trades with different issues 1-6 and Marvel failed at numbering the volumes clearly.

From Marvel, I read X-Factor, New Mutants, X-Force and Daredevil. Daredevil is probably my favorite Marvel comic with X-Factor in close second.

As mentioned above, Magneto Testament is amazing. I just bought the hardcover and it's beautiful.

Hey ifanboy forum. I am currently looking to sink my teeth into a new comic series. I started my comic book reading in non super hero books such as: fables, DMZ, Transmetropolitan, Hellboy, and 100 Bullets. The only real super hero books I have read have been 1 shots such as super man: red son and Batman Long Halloween, and Dark victory. So based on that background Im looking to read some X men related material however I have no idea where to jump in and was wondering if there was a reboot that is a good point to start. if it has a central story that arcs work towards the better.

I saw some mention of New X-Men and Young X men but other then that Im clueless stepping into major Marvel franchises

Any information or suggestions are extremely welcome as well as questions.

Thanks

Amazing Spider-Man, over the past year, has been the best it has been in my life-time. And the next issue, the big #600, should be a great jumping on point. i believe it is out next month.

As for the X-Men, I'm sure there are more informed opinions here on the forum than mine, but i would definitely pick up the trades of Joss Whedon's and john Cassady's run on Astonishing X-Men. That was some great comics work right there.

Hi, I've been reading one comic book pretty religiously for a while now, that one being Marvel's Runaways, but lately I've really been wanting to get into something new, but I don't know much about comics and have no idea where to look, I've been thinking about jumping into the X-Men, because I've liked them since I was a little kid, but it's been around forever and I'd have no idea where to start. So if anyone could either give me some idea on where to jump into X-Men, and what of the older stuff is a necessary read, or if anyone else has any other ideas of what I could maybe try. Thanks!

Joss Whedon and John Cassady's Astonishing X-Men run is a pretty good place to start. it has passing mentions to past continuity, but for the most part, it is really new reader friendly. I haven't read X-men regularly in years and I loved that run.

I gave some thought to whether I would recommend comics to a non-reader. There are many good books out there to suggest, but in truth, I would not persuade a friend to read comics. Prices are ridiculously high and getting higher. Story-lines go on for years and with all of the crossovers and tie-ins you have to make a major commitment to comics these days. While it can be fun and rewarding in a sense to see the crossovers come together and get that fanboy payoff, unless one is willing to dedicate a lot of time (either reading comics, listening to lots of podcasts or trolling message boards and news sites) and of course, money, I think jumping into comics today is an expensive proposition. So unless you have a lot of time and disposable income (unmarried young males), think twice.

What I might suggest is that a new reader check out OGN's or titles from Image, Vertigo and those publishers which offer finite series and fewer crossovers and tie-ins. A reader can walk into any comic shop or book store and pick up FABLES or Y: THE LAST MAN or I KILL GIANTS read it, and be done with it. I suppose that reading FABLES will involve some commitment to a degree, which goes back to my original point, but at least it is easy to figure out what to read in trade. Try doing that with today's superhero genre. With FABLES you know where to start and which trade to get next.

For me, I'm down to three titles a month. They say, "vote with your dollar" and that's what I'm doing. Comics that go $3.99 get dropped from my pull list. I am tired of dealing with singles and long boxes. I prefer to read, not collect, so I would like to get my comics digitally, read them, and not have to fill my home with physical media. I've done this with DVDs too. I buy a few DVDs and HC's and TP's, but I am very selective. And that's the way I like it.

Mouse Guard is, quite possibly, the most beautiful looking comic I have ever read. I just re-read volume 1 and read volume 2 for the first time yesterday. The story and characters are solid. Enjoyable and starting to get more fleshed out with backstory in volume 2. But the artwork is just stunning. I would definitely recommend this to anybody who likes fantasy-esque type stories.

There are 5 standart sizes for comics these days. There are the issues/floppies which are the regular 2.99/3.99 comics you see on the shelf, there are the trade paperbacks (trades for short) that are booksized collections of 4-8 issues/floppies, there are hardcovers that are trades with higher quality pages, ink and cover, there are the digests that are manga sized books, and then there are i believe they are called Absolites or Omnibuses which are like big big oversized collections with a paperthing covering the cover from dust.
A pull list is a list of issues you give to your local store that they will save for you until you come into the store (Or they send you it by mail). Most of the time with a 5%-20% discount so the store wont take a risk ordering something that wont sell and it will just sit on the shelf pointlessly.

The Flash Rebirth #1
Blackest Night #1
Deadpool Merc With A Mouth #1 and
Chew #1

They're all freaking awesome. I'm already a fan of Chew, in particular, and I think Deadpool is a good "restart" comic too... By that I mean a good comic to read if you've been away from the industry for a while (like me). I loved the Flash as a kid, so I'm getting down with it, too. I'll be setting up a pull list of my own for the first time soon, I think.

Hello! This is my first post on any forum, but have read them quite a bit...I thought I should probably contribute. Anyway, I am very new to comics in comparison to most of you, and I am having a hard time taking the plunge into the Marvel Universe. All of the comics that I have been getting are generally DC or indie, and although I keep eyeing those beautiful covers with the Marvel logos, I don't know where to break in. It seems like there are just too many events that I have to have followed to keep myself from getting confused without the help of the internet. I have read and enjoyed the first few trades of the Ultimate Universe, including the ultimates, x-men, and spider-man. I really want to graduate to Marvel proper. Where should I start...is there an upcoming jumping on point??

I started to read some comics a few years back while I was in school but when I dropped out I got into real novels and kinda stopped reading, despite a huge GL collection I have to read (I'm at the SC War still lol).

I was listening to a podcast today talking about what they'd like to see in the Riddler should he be the villain in the next Batman film. So I have a two-parter:

1. What Batman books in general should I read? I want super dark stuff but I've never read Batman, despite favouring DC to Marvel in terms of style.

2. Are there any great Riddler books featuring a smart, gritty Riddler instead of just a prankster? Something tonally similar to the recent Joker releases.

[EDIT] Oh, forgot to mention I'm back in school so that' why I'm jumping back to comics, they're a much quicker read than Dostoyevsky :p

Price isn't a major issue, but I don't want to get a list of books that's going to cost $300 in trades if you know what I'm saying, just a few essentials for each question and then some "Further Reading.." recommendations.

Here is the order. The more you go the quality drops from OH MY GOD! to THIS IS PRETTY AWESOME tier.
Batman Year One (Perfect start)
Batman The Long Halloween+Batman Dark Victory (iFanboy had a special about the artist of that book. This book got me into comics)
The Dark Knight Returns (Best One)
The Killing Joke (Joker)
GOTHAM CENTRAL (Just get this if you like comics in general)
Optional stuff:
The new Morrison series
A Death In The Family
Batman Hush
Batman Black And White
Batman R.I.P.
And a lot of other stuff. I cant recall a good Riddler story. Gotham City Sirens #3 had a nice story with him but i dont remember the rest.

Not essential reading in terms of background story etc of Batman but Lovers and Madmen is an excellent read and pretty dark. It's a Joker story and I preferred it to The Killing Joke (which is pretty much a must-read classic).

The Joker Graphic Novel by Azzerello had a new unique take on all of the Batman villains. I highly recommend it. It's a more realistic gritty take on everyone and Riddler is in it, even if it's not for a huge amount of time.

There have been a lot of other good Batman recommendations before mine that I would agree with.

I'm on a comic book buying spree again even though I've loads sitting unread on my shelf. It's an addiction. I just ordered MOUSE GUARD and THE NOBODY. Now I'm thinking of buying COMIC BOOK TATTOO and GOOD-BYE.

Anyone read either of those 2? I know comic book tattoo got loads of awards and stuff but I'm not really a tori amos fan. Does this matter? Are the stories really that good?

Have you read Mouse Guard before ordering it? I've been reading this one in hardcover and I love it. Read the second one not too long ago, and it was well worth the wait. I was curious about the Tori Amos book as well.

No I hadn't read any Mouse Guard before ordering it. Just went for it. Ended up ordering Comic Book Tattoo and Good-bye anyway and some book called SKIM.

I just ordered the Astro Boy Vol 1 & 2 manga from Amazon.ca, it was only $11. I wanted to read it after seeing the movie, which was pretty good, and seeing it was based on this manga in the credits.

I was curious about the Tori Amos book as well.

Woah! I got Comic Book Tattoo in the mail this morning. It looks SPECTACULAR! I didn't realise it was so big. It's like the size of an LP and it's mega fat and mega heavy. I've only just flicked through it but all the art looks beautiful. I'm so happy I bought this and I haven't even read it yet.

Also has anyone read Exurbia? I saw it adverised in this week's Abe Sapian one-shot. Looks interesting (and it's cheap).

A lot of people are talking about Green Lantern: Rebirth and Blackest Night. It's certainly one of the things I'm most pumped up about, and I suggest anyone who's looking to start reading Green Lantern should start with Green Lantern: Brightest Day rather than Green Lantern: Rebirth.

What is Brightest Day? It's a selection of classic Green Lantern comics selected by and with commentary from Geoff Johns. It's a perfect primer to read before Rebirth. You not only get a lot of history, but it gives you insight into what GL is all about. If you don't know who Krona and the secret origin of the universe is, if you don't know who Mogo is, if you don't know what the Blackest Night prophecy is... you will find these things in Brightest Day.

After that read Rebirth. No Fear is next, which was decent but probably not all that essential. That's as far as I've gotten. I'm currently waiting for Revenge of the Lanterns to come in.

I refuse to read green Lantern, as Geoff Johns has just turned it into a glorified version of the Care Bears, but for guys. You just KNOW all the different colored Lanterns are going to team up to stop the Black Lanterns, using the DC Universe version of the Care Bear Stare. No way am I reading that.

If they killed off every Lantern except for Guy Gardner and G'Nort, I would read it again. Hal Jordan? Not so much.

In the DC Universe I've read a bunch of Batman stuff (DK 1 & 2, Long Halloween, Hush, Year 1), and I'm working on GL: Rebirth through GL: Blackest Night. I'm interesting in branching out a little bit though. I've heard good things about

Identity Crisis

Geoff Johns's JSA V1: The Next Age

Grant Morrison JLA: V1

If you had to pick one of those three, which would it be? Other suggestions welcome too :)

There was actually a Vertigo title a few years back called "The Crusades" but it wasn't literally about the Crusades. I don't remember it too clearly at the moment, but it was something like a reporter in current times who finds out about this Knight from hundreds of years ago, running around on a horse and lopping people's heads off or something. I didn't stick with it and it didn't last that long, but you might want to research it and see what it was all about.

Identity Crisis was the first non-batman DC book I read and, even though I had no connection whatsoever to any of the characters, the first issue was so powerful that it got me teary eyed too.

Okay, so I bought Identity Crisis and it was pretty good. Definitely pulled some heart strings. The ending wasn't perfect. I guess I got a little lost with what was going on, and I didn't find the big villain reveal all that believable. But overall I liked it a lot.

I heard Infinite Crisis was very hard to get, so I just read a synopsis of the events in that book. Any suggestions on what to read next? Are the 52 books pretty good, or should I look into some of John's JSA or some JLA or something?

I'm still waiting on my local comic book shop to get in Green Lantern: revenge of the green lanterns. I'm a little PO'd 'cause I had the dude order it, and a week later he tells me it still might be 3 weeks or so because his distributor sucks. I could have ordered it from Books-a-million or amazon and gotten it in a few days (for less probably), but I figured I'd throw some business his way. I've actually already got both volumes of Sinestro Corps Wars on my desk, but I want to read revenge first.

also, today I read the "March on Ultimatum" trade that I bought off a dude for $7. Wow, that was pretty good IMO. I've never read any "Ultimate" books except for Ultimates 1 and 2. The main story involving the Fantastic 4 and X-men was pretty epic and intense. And there were like 3 other enjoyable stories (Peter Parker discusses sex with Mary Jane and has his first run in with Mysterio, the black panther has his origin told, and there's a HILARIOUS story of the Hulk fighting Zarda).

Maybe it was just my low expectations, but I really enjoyed that read.

I'm quite new to DC, although I've read a few books. I've never read any Green Lantern, but I've always thought the character(s) was really cool. Now that they've got this Blackest Night story going, and I'm such a huge zombie fan, I can't resist any longer. My thing is, I know there's a lot of essential books I need to read. I'm sure Sinestro Corps and Green Lantern Rebirth are in there. But what order do these books occur in? Is there anything else I should check out before I dive in head first?

I'm still perusing this thread but I figured I'd post too.
Just getting back into comics (I'm 34), I haven't bought or read comics since the 80's and the TMNT comics. After watching TRS a couple of episodes ago I was very interested in Locke & Key upon their recommendation and I thought it was cool that Joe Hill is Stephen King's son so I picked up the first volume of that last week and also Batman:Killing Joke and Fables:1001 Nights of Snowfall. I've read only the first issue of Locke & Key thus far, I'm saving the rest for a trip to San Antonio this weekend. I also just watched my first episode of iFanboy and immediately purchased TinyTitans Vol. 1 for my 10 year old daughter - looks right up her street.
As far as my other interests, my favorite movie is Braveheart. Other favorite 5-star movies for me are Fargo, Fight Club, Good Will Hunting, High Fidelity, Kill Bill, The Prestige, Pulp Fiction, Rounders, Scream, Se7en, The Shining, Shawshank Redemption.
As far as television - I love Lost, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Big Love.
I'm a moderate Sci-Fi fan - love Star Wars, not Star Trek though.
I just don't know where to start with this comic stuff, it's pretty overwhelming - Y:The Last Man seems cool, that's probably my next pickup - I like the premise.
As far as major comicbook characters - I don't know much about any - I'm pretty sure I hate Superman, hated the films anyways as a kid - I like Batman the most of any DC/Marvel characters but, again, I don't know much about any of them other than what is covered in films, I just didn't get into this stuff as a kid for whatever reason.
So, any suggestions would be cool - what else might I enjoy? Thanks!

Dark Horse releases a lot of Star War comics, I was reading The Legacy for a bit there and Knights of the Old Republic. I recommend the first one, it had a great story to it.

If you like Batman the I suggest you check out Batman Year One by Frank Miller, The Long Halloween and Dark Victory by Leob and Sale. They're all collected in trade.

If you like sci-fi type stories, I second the recommendation for Warren Ellis stuff. You might like Anna Mercury. Ignition City was really good.

You mentioned Y: The Last Man, and you can't really go wrong with that.

If you want to check out a Batman story without having to worry about having any previous knowledge, I'd say pick of The Long Halloween. It's a pretty good starter Batman story. it will introduce you to a ton of his regular villains, and it's a good story. Dark Knight Returns is pretty much the standard answer for "best" Batman story, but it really helps if you know about the character before reading that one.

I've never been into ongoing comics, though I enjoyed the occasional graphic novel - then I was tempted by Marvels digital subscription thingy and tried it out.
Now I see I missed some great stuff!

Can anyone recommend some comics similar to Incredible Hercules?
Something big, bold and silly with the emphasis on fun.

Grim and gritty stuff can take a hike.
Anything with a good sense of humor would be great too.

Comics that make you smile please!

Hmm this is a good question. I can give you a list for all the x-men trades in order that are currently out, but a good story to start for that one would be Messiah Complex. I absolutely adored it and what came before it. It's what actually got me into comics.

As for spiderman, if you want to get into what's currently going on, you should start with the trade called One more day. That pretty much sets things up for the next trade Brand new day and what happens after it.

Avengers is also a difficult one. They have trades of the old stories, but I think if you really want to get into what is going on and how it's lead up to current, start by reading Avengers disassembled and then House of M. After that, start with New Avengers #1

If you want that full list of x-men, or any other suggestions, just send me a pm. ^^

I guess if you want funny stuff, try some Deadpool out. He's always great for random and funny. If you dont mind some more adult situations, there is also a series called Empowered. It's really funny, but does have adult situations. Most comics have some very silly moments intertwined with funny. If I can think of any more, I'll make sure to post them up here.

Heya folks, Life-Long Marvel reader with very little DC smarts, I'm finding myself drawn to the Lantern (excuse the pun) and I picked up the first "Chronicles" so I've got a basic foundation of Hal, but how do I go about better-familiarizing myself with the entire timeline, main nemesis', and various ring-bearers over the years before I get into "ReBirth" and "Blackest Night"?

Thank you for your patience, I'm sure this has been asked before!

Hey all. I come from the Totally Rad Show forums and got recommendations to come here (and I hope to be a viewer of iFanboy now).

I stopped reading comics right after the Death (and Return) of Superman run. It was a time where I was about to start high school and I started to have no money of my own. But now 15 years later (I assume its been that long), I want back in. I have absolutely no idea what has been going on in DC, as I completely stopped buying. My real interest was in Superman, but I did pickup Flash and Green Lantern constantly.

Are there some trades that anyone can suggest to play catch up? Or a website that will help? I got recommendations on Superman for All-Star Superman and Superman: Secret Origin. Is this a good place to start?

Thanks.

I can honestly say that I've only read the Death (and Return) of Superman when it first came out in the early 90's when I was a little kid. But I've heard that All-Star Superman is a great start for you if you're trying to get back into the series. I've read a couple reviews in Amazon and it looks interesting enough for me to buy it. I'm not a big DC fan but I'm finding myself purchasing a lot of Batman books lately including Dark Knight Returns, Year One, Long Halloween and Hush.

Here's an article that Josh wrote (http://www.ifanboy.com/content/articles/Green_Lantern__Where_Do_I_Start_) about starting to read Green Lantern. We did a video show on the same topic (http://www.ifanboy.com/podcasts/video/iFanboy_-_Episode__130_-_Green_Lantern). We also did a show on The Flash (http://www.ifanboy.com/podcasts/video/iFanboy_-_Episode__165_-_The_Flash_).

Check out our show archive (both the main show (http://www.ifanboy.com/podcasts/video/weekly) and the Minis (http://www.ifanboy.com/podcasts/video/mini)) and you might find a lot of the information that you're looking for.

Top Ten
Walking Dead
Invincible

So... Any suggestions? I prefer them to be in TPB or hardcover form, I'm trying to stay away from floppies since that would really get me back into spending money I don't have. :(

Awesome!

Those are two of the best Superman stories in recent years and both excellent places to start.

Hey thanks a ton. Just checked out the episodes you suggested and count me as a new viewer. Really enjoyed it.

I ran through Superman:secret origin, and 2 All-star Superman trades and was very happy with it. It feels good to get back into some great stories of Superman. I also picked up Green Lantern:Secret Origin to get a refresher on the origin story. I hope its cool to read that before starting on Rebirth and Sinestro Corp War.

Again, thanks for the advice, and you sold me as a new viewer.

I've been steadily making my small collection of books bigger and bigger but I'm starting to run out of things to read. Here's the stuff I own and enjoyed. Are there any recommendations for another series? I was thinking Green Lantern but I've never read a single issue of it.

Preacher
Y, The Last Man
DMZ
Fables
Ultimates
Locke & Key
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Batman: Hush
Batman: Long Halloween
Batman: Killing the Joke
Batman: Year One
100 Bullets
Ex Machina
Runaways
Captain America (Ed Brubaker)
Extraordinary League of Gentlemen
Top Ten
Walking Dead
Invincible

If you enjoyed Batman: The Long Halloween, there is a sequel called Dark Victory that is pretty good. Also, the same creative team did a story called Haunted Knight, which is what led to Long Halloween. You might want to check those out.

Also, it looks like you enjoy Vertigo titles. It would probably be a good idea to take a look at Sandman. Sandman Mystery Theater is also very good, a great take on the Golden Age Sandman by Matt Wagner, one of my favorite creators.

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually just picked up American Vampire and the two Parker books. I haven't gotten a chance to read them yet, but the artwork looks insanely good. I'm trying to pick up all the books for DMZ, Fables and Ex Machina before I start reading them. The closest I'm at right now is Fables vol 5. I have a looooong way to go. I did finally get a chance to finish buying all the Walking Dead books out now, so that's a plus. So many series I need to catch up on and yet I still want more. :D

It's a heavy one but the first comic i ever read was The Sandman in my late teens, then i read the rest of the offshoots like Lucifer and Death: the high cost of living. and also a great comic (well it's a manga really, but the author has done a Wolverine crossover) is BLAME!. i don't really want to spoil anything but it's awesome too. also! Evil that men do (spiderman) is quite good as well, stuff with x-23 and dark wolverine with daken is pretty cool.

i prefer reading one-shots because it's a succinct story-line and doesn't trail off right at the end like the weekly stuff.

i've just started reading Superman: Earth One and it's pretty awesome, but i'm a complete newb in the regard that i've never read any superman stories even though i'm familiar with the backstory to the extent that occasionally watching smallville provides. i've never seriously read any DC comics before because mostly of way to many story lines and characters i don't care for. Batman/Superman are the only two heroes i think are awesome. but at the same time i've never gotten into either because of what i feel is high barrier of entry. loads of stuff already in the process lots of similar looking characters with different backgrounds, just mindfucked me.

i love the fresh start of superman earth one and the graphic novel-ness of it, much high quality of artwork and story telling, did you guys know theres a gorilla with a cyborg brain in the mainstream continuity?!?!? wtf??

you can probably tell i don't really read comics but i'd like to. awesome comic, brilliant for anyone new to the series.
