A very important warning about Southland Tales! The guys man up and form a Rock Band. Wii Zapper: Does Link's Crossbow Training hit the mark? Can Medal of Honor Heroes 2 be commended? Plus, indie comics, Black Hole and Street Angel.

What the hell were you guys laughing about in the outtakes? I can't tell.

Jeff, Dan, Alex...here's what I don't get. Between the three of you (fair enough, mostly Dan) you rattle off three and a half billion movies that need to be seen by age 28 AND you do a Wayne's World intro BUT not one of you mentions Wayne's World as that movie from childhood that you quote everyday.
"Game off!"
"Game on!"
"Camera one, camera two, camera one..."
The drive through scene!
"A sphincter says what?"
"Exsqueeze me? Baking powder."
Come on! I couldn't count how many times I've thrown these quotes out (I'm no mathamagician). Either give me that dudes email address or be a man and straighten out this mess yourself. Make it happen, Jeff.

I thought the intro was great. I like the feel that they don't pick the most obvious moments from some of the movies. There are plenty of scenes you could have done from Wayne's World (the blue screen would have been funny)... but the shameless promotion part is one of my favorites.
Well done show guys.

That was one of the most hysterical things I have watched in a long time. Jeff channelling Dan in his pause-laden and all over the place passionate review, Dan's lovely balls story that my kid started to tell my mom on the phone when she called right after, the rock band demo with the beautiful singing, and even the outtakes.
Thanks guys!

One of the funniest-ass epodes ever.
I have to agree with Jeff about previews, I don't watch them either.
This episode demonstrates how painful life must be to be left-handed.

Loooved the episode, I was laughing out loud a lot! Great intro, but the Bohemian Rhapsody scene would've been awesome too. Glad that you got Rock Band in there, I was thinking how perfect that would be for the show. I'm sorry to hear how poorly Southland Tales is being received, considering how much I liked Donnie Darko. Oh well, sophomore slump, I guess.
And just out of curiosity, did you guys try Medal of Honor without the zapper? Because it's supposed to be much better. Also, there's the online mode, which if nothing else, is remarkable for not using friend codes.
TRS continues to be the highlight of my week.

The wii zapper mode is just kind of thrown in in MoH2:H. Try the regular mode with the controls at advanced (or whatever it's called).

The Zapper part of Medal Of Honor Heroes 2 is a secondary feature. If you play without the Zapper it's supposed to have the best FPS controls on the Wii. Did you guys play it like that at all?
And I've just read the previous post, so I second that.

So now my boyfriend and I agree we absolutely have to go see Southland Tales! You all thought it was so bad that we can't resist. :P
Loved the gag reel at the end, Alex had me cracking up, Dan kept me giggling because he just silent laughs half the time (in between telling Alex "You just grabbed my nuts!") and the minute Jeff goes all high pitched voice I always lose it. :D
I liked that you all checked out comics none of you had read yet. They looked interesting, too.
Thanks!

You boneheads. Haven't you read anything about the zapper? It has been panned. It is pretty much crap and you based your impressions of the games solely on the zapper.
Medal of Honor Heroes has what's being called the best FPS controls on the Wii or ANY console. Better than Metroid Prime 3 and anything else.
There is no need to use the zapper on any game. Did you think you couldn't play it without it? I shake my head at you guys sometimes. I like you guys and the show but sometimes you just don't get it and this is not the only time you've trashed the Wii unjustifiably.

The Rock Band segment was awesome. Jeff and Alex both have damn good voices--no wonder they're not shy about singing. Those drums are friggin' LOUD though. Wish they could correct that.
Really looking forward to your Mass Effect impressions. I finished it a couple days ago and I'm really ambivalent.

I have to agree with Jeff about previews, I don't watch them either.
I also try to avoid movie trailers of movies I already know I'm going to see. In a similar vein, I don't watch the previews of "next week's episode" of any TV show I watch because I spend the entire time with the preview in the back of my mind thinking things like "I know she doesn't die now because she did X in the preview" which takes a lot of the tension (dramatic, comedic, suspenseful, etc.) out of scenes. [Damn, that was a long sentence.] The TV listings in the newspaper (I'm looking at you Washington Post) can also ruin episodes by telling you things that don't happen until minute forty of an hour-long show.

Shake your head all you want at us. I couldn't care less what anything is "being called" - I only go by what I think. And I think that Medal of Honor Heroes 2 is garbage with or without the zapper. There were literally enemies running at the walls as we played. We would shoot them and they would just keep running in place, their heads buried in the wall. If you can honestly play that game and then play COD4... or Orange Box... or Halo 3... or even freakin' Resistance, and come away saying MOHH2 is better, then I can only shake my head at YOU.

PS
We don't trash the Wii unjustifiably. Did Dan and I not just go on and on about how much we loved Galaxy? I honestly don't understand this. Wii is the only console where if you criticize one game, suddenly you hate the whole thing "unjustifiably". We were disappointed by Medal of Honor: Airbourne, too. Does that mean we unjustifiably hate the 360?

Once again i'm saying the phrase "Jeff, I am with you 100%". This time it's about movie trailers. I hate modern trailers. As I've aged they get progressively worse and worse. Sometimes I'll see a trailer and think to myself, "Well, they just showed me the entire film. Why should I even bother?" There should not be the beggining, middle and end in a trailer. There should not be a revelation of a twist that's an hour into the film in the trailer. There should not be a compilation of the best scenes in the entire film so that when you actually see it the steam is already gone... in a trailer. It's very very frustrating.
Trailers CAN be good. If they're used as teasers and show you the tone and look of a film that's great. Maybe MAYBE they can give a introduction to the plot. Somehow they don't think this way anymore. So I close my eyes, put my fingers in my ears and say "LA LA LA LA LA".
They didn't always used to be this way. The best trailer I've seen recently was There Will Be Blood. I had no idea what was going on, but I knew I wanted to see the movie. That is how it should be.

Actually I was mildly shocked when I read the original post before it had the PPS ("pre-post-post-script"?). Then when I went to reply and noticed the addendum, I thought, "Oh OK, there's Jeff's real voice." Kind of a Bilbo Baggins-y "gimme my ring" moment followed by normalcy.

Jeff, you spoke to me stronger today than ever before. Any little snippet of information, be it word of mouth or a three minute trailer, affects my viewing of the movie. If someone tells me it has a terrible ending, I'm going to go through the entire movie thinking "this would make for a terrible ending, it'll probably end now" and it hurts my viewing experience. The "hook" in I Am Legend was ruined to me because of the previews. The movie "Vantage Point" probably looks like B-list suspense/action to you guys, but it looks like my kind of movie and the trailers show soooo much, even if it's a "twisty-turny plot" type of movie.
I actually don't have problems with trailers in general, but almost all of them show too much. I like trailers that can be called teasers that just show one or two short clips at most, but is mostly comprised of material not found in the movie like the spoken-words-only teaser for batman: begins.
On the flip side, there are some movies that I would not see unless I got the trailer. Atonement, I was going to pass it off as a "historic-setting typecast keira knightly romance" until I saw the preview, and it made me want to go see it.

I completely agree! I've seen this trailer a couple times ... the music and the clips in the movie totally set up the mood and style of the film without giving away anything about the plot. That's how trailers should be!

Oh yes, I saw that trailer before No Country For Old Men. It's not traditionally my kind of movie but it really got me interested because I feel like they gave us a lot of insight into the characters, but hardly showed us any of the plot, and I'm really character-focused many a time, so it piqued my interest and I will be going to see it.

I have been saying that exact same thing about the I Am Legend Trailer. I was trying to think back to when I saw a trailer and had no clue what that movie was about and I came up with Independence Day. Could be how old I was, or how longs its been, but I really did not know a thing about it going into the movie.

I knew nothing about the movie A Beautiful Mind. My cousin has a 1269 DVD movie collection and I just pulled it out and watched it and my God knowing what this movie was about would have killed it for me. When I made my parents watch this movie I sat them down and said watch.
Movies are much better it you can find someone that you agree with and just watch whatever movie they watch without question.
I wish that during the movie review all three of you would just say weather you liked the movie or not. Like in the case of Southland Tales each one would say "hate it" then give your review that way I know if I want to see it or not.

After seeing a truly terrible movie, I think Jeff should hop into his DeLorean (as I'm sure ALL the Rad Dudes have one), go back to last week, and bump his review of "Beowulf" up a few points.
(I agreed with Dan on that one... too obvious?)
Anyhow, the Rock Band clips were awesome; we've got a copy at the office, and you guys are right, those drums are really farkin' loud. That, and sometimes the marks they want you to hit don't seem to match the rhythm in a logical way. Didn't stop me from getting my New Jersey on to a little ditty by Bon Jovi, though!
And to play Debbie Downer for a minute, I was a little disappointed by the opening segment this week. In all fairness, I think I've just been spoiled by your brilliance, which usually entails a re-imagining of the dialog from a scene ("Must go faster!" comes to mind). This week was a straight re-shoot; still funny, not as genius.
But, I can't let this go out on a sour note; this is the Rad we're talking about! Awesome job guys, can't wait until *cough* live LA taping *cough* next week!
Edit: Re-watching Jeff do "Sabotage" is the most awesome thing in the world. Kudos!

I just wanted to jump in with these few juicy tidbits of info that may or may not be relevant.
a) I 100% agree with Jeff on the issue of movie trailers. It's like when you hang out with friends the day after they all see a movie you want to see, but haven't yet, and they just talk and talk and talk about it. The scripts and plots are written, filmed, and edited in a way that presents the viewer with not just a story, but an experience that is supposed to suspend your current state of mind and suck you in, get your heart pumping, toy with your emotions, and make you a part of the movie, not just a spectator. Movies are the closest thing to virtual reality we really have, when you think about it. That effect is only possible through the magical elements of wonder, surprise, curiosity, and mystery, and once a movie trailer quits being a teaser and becomes glorified Cliff Notes version of the film, we are robbed of those things. Think about your favorite movie of all time. Think about the last time you watched it. Sure, you may have still enjoyed it, and celebrated it's technical achievements or it's awesome style of editing or whatever about it that really appeals to you, but you've never loved watching it as much as the first time you saw it when it was all new, fresh, breathtaking, and you clung to the edge of your seat in anticipation.
b) Just to make Dan feel a wee bit better.... when I was MUCH younger (about 28 years ago) and being potty trained, I had an accident. I was just tall enough that if I stood on the tips of my toes, "Mr. Winkerton" just barely made it over the porcelain lip of the toilet. Being that I was taught to be courteous, I had the toilet seat up. I was dealt a harsh lesson in the laws of physics when I had my first taste of the gravitational constant as the toilet seat came crashing down. I, too, have had purple in the pants, Dan.
c) Not that I'm disagreeing that the two movies listed weren't confusing, but in the category of "most confusing movies ever," I would be remiss not remind people of Lost Highway. It was like Fantasia would have been if it were directed by Kubrik!

Jeff, I back you 100% about the previews. It just kills it for me. When I see previews, I think "well I don't have to see that when it comes out because I just got to see the every scene worth seeing. Now this could have been my fault, but case and point: the trailer for 300. It left me thinking at every other frame of the film " oh yeah, here is where this happens... ok thats done oh oh this is new .... oh wait i saw this part too... Enough said. The episodes just keep getting better. Keep it up.

I also agree with Jeff. I'm at the point now, where if I see a trailer for a video game, or a movie, or even a TV show, I instantly know when they've shown the ending. Whenever I see a trailer for something I'm interested in, I hit mute and look away (which gets me a ton of grief from those around me, but whatever). The worst example I can think of is probably last seasons CSI and CSI New York. During the middle commercial break, they'd do a thing where you text message A B or C (with each letter representing a person) to their number, for a chance to win money. You had to guess which person out of the 3 was the murderer (which narrowed the possibilities to 3 of who could have been the murderer) and worse than that, they often showed clips of things that hadn't happened yet (in the show, during the commercials for that show ><). We have it good in the US I suppose, because almost all of the TV drama's in Japan have previews of the second half of a show, just before the middle commercial break. Glad to know I'm not the only anti-spoiler guy out there.
Oh and before I forget, I LOVE karaoke, or more specifically, how it gives people that can't sing (Alex...I'm looking at you) a chance where they never would have had one before. I had a chance to do Karaoke on a recent trip to Japan, and while there were only two or three English songs on the menu, it was a ton of fun. I'm having a ton of problems finding someone that can drum in Rock Band though, so it's been a bit of a mixed bag for me.
Love the show, keep it up :D
Oh and (last time, promise) Jeff sings much better than I thought any of you three would =P
Oh and before I forget (damnit), I know this should probably be saved for next week, but I can't. On page 3 (I think) MormonRage mentioned ambivalence towards Mass Effect (after finishing it). I feel the same way (the rest of this paragraph might contain Mass Effect spoilers. Don't read further if you care). After finishing Mass Effect, I was left with a sense that I had just played Kotor, but without the fun planets to visit, or the Star Wars licensing to make it cool. I definitely love how it's more of an FPS and not turn based anymore (like Kotor was), but the FPS element to the game makes the technical glitches almost unbearable. For instance, after a cut scene with a guy I was going to have to fight, I was often dropped out of the cut scene faced the wrong way, only to take a ton of damage trying to correct the problem (in hard mode. They shoot almost instantly). Ontop of that, the framerate didn't stay steady for a minute at a time during any outdoor mission, or any indoor mission with too many enemies on screen at once. Staying with the technical side, the lips don't match the voice acting very often (understandable for characters like Shepard where you can change the look of the face/mouth, but not for characters that were set) textures pop in and out at random (character will go from next gen to last gen as you watch, with all of the nicely detailed textures dissapearing) and not just in one or two spots, but throughout the ENTIRE game, even during cut scenes (which is freaking inexcusable). Now to speak of the gameplay. Where Kotor had worlds that felt populated and fleshed out, Mass Effect has very linear places to go (go back and look at the Citadal. It may seem big, but it's not, and they even give you a warp system). Maybe the Star Wars license helped the "Other Planets" (The less-than-populated ones) feel fun in Kotor, because any place other than the Citadel felt completely dead. In a world where we have a game like Oblivion (which has it's flaws too, but that's for another time) where characters actually have lives whether or not you are looking at them (and homes...let's not forget about homes) Mass Effect has characters that stand around and do nothing, that are there 24/7, that are pretty much lifeless husks there for the hell of it. The citadel is so clinical that even when you go in the strip club (Chora's Den) it seems as if it's just as lifeless as the main level (the presidium) of the Citadel (which...should be lively. It's really not). On top of that, you will earn money in Mass Effect that you don't need to spend (you get all the gear for free as you play. I'm at over a million credits with the best equipment in the game) and there are no special weapons or armor that you can earn (atleast not at level 50 or whatever I ended up at). I could go on and on, but I think Mass Effect is another one of those games that needed to go back into the oven for a few months (maybe 6?) to bake and get better. The technical glitches make Mass Effect seem like a Beta, and that makes me sad after having spent 70 dollars on the game (and 13 hours to complete the main story + a healthy helping of side quests, none of which were fun). Maybe I've missed the point of the game somehow, and really I need to replay it as a new type of character and see if I like it better (some people love to play the same game over and over as different types of character. Not me so much) but for me, Mass Effect comes nowhere close to Kotor, or Oblivion (especially Oblivion) when it comes to the pure amount of things there are to do in the world. That's the test for RPG's (atleast I think) and Mass Effect fails miserably.
One more thing, and I promise this is it, and I doubt anyone has read this far anyway, but I have to comment on it. The elevators...in Mass Effect...what IDIOT decided those wouldn't be skippable, and that I'd have to sit through 10 minutes (total) of elevator ride EVERY time I played the game (Getting to the ship in the citadel is 1 mass transit, 1 long elevator, then a lonnnnnng stint in the decontamination chamber, then an elevator inside the damn ship to get to the lower levels...Arghhhh). I'm very, very interested to see what others thought of Mass Effect, because from where I sit, it's a technical dissapointment, it's a graphical dissapointment, and an all around dissapointment.

Jeff,
Can you comment on the actual FPS controls for MOH:H2. I can understand the hate if the AI and pathfinding for enemies is terrible, but how did you find the controls without the Zapper. If you took those controls and added them to COD4, would they improve that game on a console? (e.g. are they the next best thing to a keyboard and mouse?).

Medal of Honor Heroes is a horrible game. With or without the zapper I don't think I could stand it for more than 5 minutes. My friend bought it and we were both disappointed. The controls weren't bad, and even if you think it's the best control scheme ever, it doesn't save the horrible gameplay (single and multiplayer are horrible).
The one game I'd suggest with a zapper is Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles.

Best episode ever...why? My first background was in it.
I feel bad because I totally left Alex out of my email submission. He is the reason I am watching the show in the first place. He mentioned Geekdrome on Diggnation back in the day and then I got hooked on that and that kind of turned into TRS.

I loved the opening credits.
Also, on the trailer topic. I love trailers and love to watch them before films and online. However like Jeff I have begun to not watch trailers for movies that I want to see. Its not really that they show you once or twice but that I have to watch it twenty times while watching TV, DVDs and online. Seriously if I took every trailer that Transformers showed in all those media, I could pretty much patch the movie together. It takes away from the experience in the theater.
Also, as for movie suggestions for Andy ( I assumed he wanted movies from when he was 20 and below) I am surprised your lists didn't include Raider of the Lost Ark, Back to the Future trilogy, or a even movie like Se7en.

-Jeff
PPS
All of that sounded harsh. I do appreciate the ffedback - welcome to the forums! :)
Well, sorry for my heavy criticism and for calling you boneheads. It was meant lovingly =).
Look I haven't played MOH Heroes I was merely focusing on the controls and what I've read in other reviews, not the AI etc. You said how bad the controls felt with the zapper and I think Alex or Dan, whoever, commented on how the controls were not really customizable. From everything I've read it has some of the most customizable and best controls of any FPS on the Wii or any console for that matter, so your take on it baffled me. Also you didn't mention whether you actually tried it w/out the zapper. I'd be interested to know.
I know not all games are for everyone but one must consider the platform as well as the artistic style and judge accordingly. I've played Mario Galaxy and it is gorgeous as a Wii title and also compared to the 360 and PS3. I primarily play FPSs on the PC and so am very familiar with hi-def beautiful graphics and the great gameplay of games like Orange Box, COD 1,2 & 4, Oblivion, FEAR, Bioshock and others but I can still appreciate the graphics and style of Galaxy.
With regard to the unjustifiable criticism, I was merely speaking of your reactions/comments in aggregate. I know you, Jeff, have not been overly critical of the Wii. Alex on the other commented on how crappy the graphics in Mario Galaxy were. Huh? In what world are those crappy?
Anyway, thanks for the response.

I just wanted to jump in with these few juicy tidbits of info that may or may not be relevant.
b) Just to make Dan feel a wee bit better.... when I was MUCH younger (about 28 years ago) and being potty trained, I had an accident.
Wow, the same thing happened to me. OUCH!
As far as the trailers go I'll agree with Jeff and just about everyone else.

The Zapper part of Medal Of Honor Heroes 2 is a secondary feature. If you play without the Zapper it's supposed to have the best FPS controls on the Wii. Did you guys play it like that at all?
And I've just read the previous post, so I second that.
Wes
I think their review was more about the hardware than the games. The Wii Zapper comes with Link's Crossbow Training for $20. And from what I hear, if you don't use the Zapper shell, the game is a lot more fun. A fun game for $20? That comes recommended in my book.
Medal on Honor Heroes 2 seriously pales in comparison to other shooters on the xbox 360 and whatnot. But it is the best controlling shooter (without the zapper shell) on a console for many people. I rented it, but I don't really like the FPS genre, so I can't really say much about the game other than it does indeed control amazingly. However, a shooter fan that only has a Wii should check it out. It's head and shoulders above Red Steel and all the other (I'm not including Metroid) FPS games on the system.
Edit: And I just saw this on IGN. Hopefully it'll be a lot better than the Zapper.

Hahaha, I got the gist of this post elsewhere but I had to search for it. I think Wii lovers are so used to having game reviews bash the console that they see it in every review now.
1) The review was very zapper centric when it shouldn't be since no one actually wanted this thing so it got way more attention then it should have.
2) You guys should have talked about the AI more. That's a bigger issue then having to calibrate your controls. Much bigger. Basically the zapper kinda overshadowed any other points on the game. I think you guys mentioned the AI thing but considering that AI is integral to an FPS, you guys kinda skirted the issue (I wasn't sure if it was a problem throughout the game or with certain areas/enemies for example).
3) Do you guys have a list on the negatives (and positives) or the game (except controls, we kinda know what you want to say there) because I would really like to hear your opinions on the other aspects of the game.

Agree with Jeff et al. about movie trailers. I saw No country for old men recently and couldn't help but keep my eyes open during the There will be blood trailer; I'm so friggin looking forward to it, but now I have to worry that the few images and especially the Daniel Day Lewis parts shown will lessen the impact of those scenes when I do watch the film. In response to the movies to see before 28. When I think back to movies I loved growing up I think of The Princess Bride (can't believe they didn't mention that), Roxanne, The Never Ending Story, Tron, The Karate Kid trilogy, and I didn't actually see it until much later but Labyrinth. I totally agree with The Breakfast Club, that has got to be the quintessential 80's teen movie. Moving into later years I'm going to throw in Clerks and Mallrats, but also Cecil B Demented. Not a well known movie, but one of my all time favorites.

What gets me about trailers is how they're all THE SAME nowadays, you can literally sit in the theater and go down a list of things the trailer will do and they'll all hit the mark at the same time with the same thing. It's appalling... I wouldn't mind trailers if they were INVENTIVE, but how many are? Too few to count.

Me and my brother haven't watched trailers for movies we want to see for years. So, IMO it's not immature at all. We'll sit there eyes tightly shut, heck, I've even covered my ears. After having a many movies spoiled OR finding out the very best scenes were featured in the trailer, I stopped. It's hard, because I used to love trailers. Way back when E! started out as MovieTime and all throughout the years, I loved watching their Coming Attractions show with a half hour of trailers. But time again I've been burned with too much reveal so I have to resist being curious, often encouraged by my bro (Don't look!).
I'm already mad that I broke down and peeked at photos of The Joker for The Dark Knight...I will be strong when the trailer comes out!
Hollywood needs to adopt a less-is-more attitude (like say, the teaser for The Fifth Element) when it comes to whetting the audience's appetite, but they won't.
I also only watch trailers for movies I've never heard of or ones I hadn't planned on seeing.
(Ok, most of this post was written before the guys finished their discussion about trailers, which is why I'm mirror some of what they said.)

I agree with Jeff on trailers. One of the bext moview experiences I ever had was sitting down to American Pie and turning to my friend with "I have no idea what this movie is about" and it was the most I have laughed and enjoyed a movie ever.
I don't watch end of tv teasers for next week either. I'm going to watch next week of Heroes or 24 (not anymore, but back when it was good) regardless of anything, so I don't watch them.
