which should i get im in the market to get a new iPod really but to be able to kill 2 birds with one stone and get a new phone while in the process wouldn't be a bad thing, well i would like to hear some of the pros and cons that both iPhone users and iPod touch users have had with their selected devices. So any help with this purchase is much appreciated thank you so much.

Hate to say it, but Apples marketing timing stinks - this is the time of year you want to buy new stuff, but they announce all their new product mid January at the annual Macworld expo in San Francisco.
Wait until mid January - and you will either get the existing model discounted, or pick up a new model at the same price as the current ones.

Like tokenuser said, wait until January so you can see the discounts, but then, if there is not some huge release (which I highly doubt) go for an iPhone. Why get an iphone without the phone?

1. iPod touch is 16GB not 8GB.
2. AT&T data plan to make the iPhone useful is extremely expensive.
3. AT&T have pretty crappy coverage nationally - Verizon/Sprint network is far better.
4. The iPhone is likely to be replaced with a true 3g (3rd generation) phone soon to make use of higher speed data networks - the EDGE cellular data interface is slow compared to what is achieved with 3g networks.
5. iPhone is a 1.0 device. It has problems and an update is coming (that cant be addressed by just firmware patches).

1 is wrong. It comes in both models 8gb and 16gb
I didn't get an iPhone because I hate ATT/Cingular. Had them for a year or so and it was the worst service i've had in my life. Not so much customer service but getting/making calls. Never got the "Bars" that they love to put in their commercials. I mean Raleigh isn't NYC but come on.
I love my iPod touch. I don't like that it's on 16gs but I just keep 3 each of my pod cast that I watch and my current tastes in what I want to listen to on it. I don't need my whole CD collection on this thing I would never be able to listen to it all at one time anyway.

OK, let me clarify, the MAXIMUM CAPACITY available for the touch is 16GB not 8GB like the iPhone.
Better?

Pointing out that it has double the memory is an obvious advantage isn't it? No douchery involved at all - just a statement of fact.

In my haste, I read it wrong. That happens to me all the time. Sorry about both the above statements.

Don't apoligize. The place just stinks if you don't get to have an occasional douche.

Not that I am a fanboy of the Cell phone company that I used to work for(not ATT or Verizon) but ATT/Cingulars coverage and network stink compared to CDMA/EVDO providers like Verizon...GSM does not have the clarity/static free coversation that the "true digital" providers have...But, if you already have Att and it is time for an upgrade and you get a hella discount for signing a contract, I say go with the iPhone...Don't switch if the iPhone is the only reason you wanna go to ATT.

ok im probably gonna get the iTouch because i have a decent phone right now razr and i was really only in the market for a new iPod something like 16gigs is a pretty big step up from a 2gig card in a PSP, I really only watch 3 podcast religiously(TRS, Diggnation and Ask a Ninja) so i will probably just do my favorite episodes from each counting the newest episode(being pretty frequent to take some stuff off) but i may wait till the rumors for the new iPods start floating around or a bigger size iTouch is announced if not then i will get the iPod touch for christmas.

Having just succumbed to the urge to get the iPhone I thought I'd chime in. I was digging it and all when I first got it. Then I discovered the Jailbreak hack that allows other apps to be put on it and I am now officially in love. You can do this with the Touch as well, but some apps are specifically meant for the phone. I'm coming off having had a MotoQ with Verizon so I will say the ATT data speeds are a bit of a system shock and it's not like WiFi is omnipresent where I live like San Fran or NYC so browsing can be a tad tedious. I'm sure it's been said a billion times, but 3G would have been really nice.
The other biggies, which I'm sure they can update later via firmware are lack of voice dialing (though a favorites page of numbers sort of makes it easier while driving) and also the inability to send picture messages and/or shoot or send video. They want you to concentrate on email which is a snap but the ability to quickly send to someone else's phone would be nice.
Otherwise the phone experience is truly excellent. It's a snap to switch to speaker, bluetooth, mute, etc while in call. You can also easily make a 3way call or put people on hold which was capable in cell phones for a while, but usually required special voodoo rituals to make happen. The "face sensor" still freaks me out in how it turns off the touch screen when it gets close to your face. Visual Voicemail is also a very nice feature. Skip around to any part of the message with a slider bar (for Spaced fans I call it my "skip to the end" feature) or just delete the message without listening at all. I know it's a small thing, but I love that there's one simple toggle switch to go from ring to vibrate.
All other features are pretty much identical. If you're happy with your phone and don't really need the internet anywhere thing (minus WiFi of course) then the Touch will make you happy. I was in the same boat and just decided I wanted one device to carry around instead of two. I'm happy with the choice so far. Just be sure to Jailbreak either one for additional fun. (don't worry it's very easily undoable and won't void any warranties or anything.. and it's SUPER easy) Feel free to ask me how when you make a decision, but you'll honestly laugh at how easy it is.. it just takes going to a website in Safari and clicking Install.

Oh the update that just came out with it lets you know update events to your calander on the iPod instead of going through itunes. That rocks. I just spent the last hour updating my gig schedule in it.

I am incredibly satisfied with my Touch. For some people the space is an issue, but I find the 8 gigs to be enough. I've got the latest episodes of diggnation, trs, tekzilla, infected, ask a ninja, tiki bar, reason TV, along with smodcast and TWIT. I've got the latest colbert report (now very old) along with an episode of Weeds and an hour and a half concert film from Rabbit in the Moon. I've got a few hundred photos of my family and friends, and 62 albums on there with a little room to spare.
That gives me around 5 hours of video, and enough variety of music to cover enough recent aquisitions plus a variety of older albums so that I can listen to just about any style of music that I might want to hear. I actually like having around that much space for my music. When I'm on the go and trying to decide what I want to listen to, I only have to peruse the 60+ albums listed to make a decision. Some times on my old 30 gig iPod I'd find myself spending so much time deciding what to listen to that I didn't have much time left to listen before I had to turn the thing off.

iPhone iPwns.
8gb isnt a issue. There are playlists for such things. In any given day do you really need 60+gb of music? Even 20 ? I drive all day and i have audio books, music, apps and podcasts and its rare that i run out of space. When i do i just delete the podcasts i listened to last month that im not ever gonna listen to again and im back in the green.
I agree, more space is nice, dont get me wrong, i want more too. But 8gb is a lot easier to deal with then you think is all im saying.

Had my IP Touch past week. Was very happy with the calendar fix is last update .. that pushed me to get a touch. I really am not a fan of one provider and contracts, so the decison was simple.
8 or 16GB?
As others have posted 8GB great for my use .. using playlists as I do not carry all my music. I might sync up a playlist for a certain mood or just a random 2GB of my 2+ stars tracks. This site had a good writ up on using playlists..

Good luck with your final decision and purchase . Ohh check out the itunes store on the IP touch or iPhone.. awesome stuff.
