View Full Version : Favorite western animation (aka not anime!)

What are some of your favorite western animated shows/movies (not comic books, do post motion pictures/television).
For me it has to be:
- Justice League: The Animated Series
I was stunned at the production values when I first started watching this, and nothing is more epic than the opening sequence.
- The Iron Giant
If you didn't cry, you don't have a soul.
- Cow and Chicken
The humor was so not for kids, yet the show was on Cartoon Network when the most controversial show was Space Ghost. The humor was just ****ing insane, and taught me a lot about life (not kidding) at such a young age.
- Batman
The early 90's one, not any of the crappy later versions a few years back, the show was so dark, really captured the mood of the Batman universe.
I'm sure I'll think of more, but what are some of yours?

I'm not even sure this is western - Imdb has it as South Korea / USA so I don't know if that means we just took it from them. *shrug*
Anyway, when I was younger I always thought of it as western so I'm saying it.
Starchaser - The Legend of Orin (http://www.amazon.com/Starchaser-Legend-Orin-Jan-Rabson/dp/B0007XBKPO)
Of course, now when I watch it I can see it's a blatant rip-off of Star Wars but I didn't know that then. I saw it when I was 8 or 9 in the theatre. Some of the images stayed with me so strongly that as I grew up I had completely forgotten what the film was called and so asked around for years trying to find out. Finally about 10 years ago someone I asked knew exactly what I was talking about and found me a vhs copy. It's on dvd now, yay.
So yeah, I love that film. Hopefully it's considered western so I'm not an idiot posting in here. :P
Edit: I am stupid. I thought you were saying you liked Space Ghost, not Cow and Chicken. I skim too much. Anyway, editing to say I liked Space Ghost.
I'll add The Simpsons, Southpark and Family Guy.
Edit#2: Forgot Futurama and TMNT - thanks for reminding me guys!

- Batman

Hellzfreakinyeahs!! I LOVED that show! And it gave us Harly Quinn.
Oddly enough, a lot of mine are CG:
-Reboot
Awesome concept, well executed, and just fun.
-Transformers: Beast Wars
Again, well done, and a refreshing spin on the Transformers for a fan of the old ones like myself.
-Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles
Dark as all hell, beautiful, and ran on bizarre stations. What's not to love?
-Sonic the Hedgehog
Not the crappy, bright colored one, but the dark one that ran on ABC, complete with a Robotnik dystopia.
And in movies:
-Lilo & Stitch
Granted, this could be misconstrued as favoritism, being as I work for the Company and have a quote from it in my sig, but this is seriously the most inventive animated movie I've seen in a LONG time. Real characters, not typical animated charictures, a strange plot, highly quotable screeplay, and glorious watercolor art = one very happy Matteekay.

Star Wars The Clone Wars seems like it will be cool cause I only like the clones, don't care about the rest of Star Wars. Star Wars: Clone Wars was okay (also, that's the same series animated by the guys from Samurai Jack)
I hate amine.

Avatar doesn't count, so I won't even mention it.
Dexter's Lab and Power Puff Girls. You have no soul if you didn't grow up liking either.
The first season of Pokemon, and ONLY the first season (wait, that's technically anime.)

ReBoot = OMFG, Lilo & Stich = YES YES YES, Transformers: BW = I still love you, Sonic = it's settled, we're getting married.
X-Men TAS (The 90's version) and TMNT of course....
How could I have forgotten Xmen! I still have some of the VHS tapes under my bed tucked with some other goodies, amazing show! The 2002/2003 or whenever one wasn't too bad, but can't touch the original.
Can't believe I forgot about Samuria Jack as well! People laughed at me when I told them to watch it, then would come back like three months later with a simple: "DUDE!". The first two episodes of the second season are amazing.
Adding to the already mentioned Dexter's Lab/Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo was hilarious, nothing beats sexual humor in a kid's show, nothing!
One more, Street Sharks. I couldn't get enough of this show, and this is from someone who hates sharks with a passion, but loved the idea of sharks walking around the streets (with hip edgy fashion!!!) and burrowing underground.
Awesome lists people, keep 'em coming.
[EDIT] Oh, and Avatar does count, it's an American made show inspired by Eastern techniques

Dexter and PPG were pretty good too. But I fail to see why Avatar doesn't count. It's totally a western show. Sure, it's influenced by anime, but that doesn't make it anime.

[EDIT] OMG, I didn't even remember what Clone High was until you mentioned it, I remember seeing that show a few times....I wonder if they have a DVD out.....

Heeeeeyyyyyy, maybe you have a soul but were a little too old for most cartoons then!
(Pffft, I watched them anyway and liked 'em. Though I was a teenager at the time and had a little much going on to even care about watching cartoons.)

Metalocalypse
South Park
Except for South Park their 'animation' style sucks, regardless of the writing and acting. (Metalocalypse is a guilty pleasure of mine.)
Not picking on you either, others have mentioned great cartoons that have iffy animation style. That's why I picked the three I did, great style, animation AND story.
South Park is good but after they switched from actual colored paper cut-outs to a computer program for the animation, it lost some of my respect (in that regard, I still think the stories are very good).
Bottom line, substance is very important, but in the context of this thread, I was looking at style also, perhaps I'm the only one. :D

Let's see what do I like that hasn't been mentioned...
Darkwing Duck was friggin awesome - as well as Ducktales and Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers.
A cartoon that I didn't get into until after it was canceled was Gargoyles: I loved the opening:
One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled.
It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear.
It was the age of gargoyles.
Stone by day, warriors by night,
we were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect,
frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years.
Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and we live again!
We are defenders of the night!
We are GARGOYLES.
I rank Gargoyles up there w/ Thundercats and Transformers.

I kinda remember SWAT Kats, Pirates of Dark Water was another cartoon that I got into late...It had really good acting and animation for its time. Oh, and the Hook/Peter Pan spinoff cartoon on Fox was pretty good...Man, Fox made some good toons back in the day...What Happened?

Venture Bros.!!
Futurama!
robot chicken!
some that I haven't seen mentioned:
Triplets of bellevue (french, but there's little to no dialog.) - an amazing film about a tour de france bicyclist who gets kiddnapped and his mom and dog have to get him back. I can't even describe it really though - the quality of the visual storytelling is unbelievable.
Emperor's new groove - i thought this one was pretty damn funny.
also, pretty much anything tex avery did and I have fond memories of those early psychedelic-ish disney cartoons.

I'm a bit shocked that I didn't see anybody bring up the best animated TV show, The Real Ghostbusters!
SWAT Katz was fantastic growing up.
There was one old cartoon show I use to watch when I was a kid. Can't remember the name of it but all I do remember from the show was the kid morphed into a red sports car (not Transformers.)
