The Rifftrax crew of Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett are taking on perhaps one of their greatest challenges for the holidays, the Star Wars Holiday Special. Man, I shudder every time it's mentioned. Hopefully the MST3K gang can help us make it through the whole thing without gouging our eyes out with a spork.

Rifftrax is lame, especially when put up against the absolute best in 'alternate DVD commentaries' which is, without question, DVDPodblast (http://www.adudathuda.com/dvdpodblast/blasts.html).
Not only do Rifftrax charge for their mediocrity, they've given up any notion of going after bad movies and are now just doing popular movies that people like to drum up subscribers. Why else would they do 300, RAIDERS, PREDATOR or BOURNE.
It's sad, really. Not a single Rifftrax commentary has ever come close, laughs-wise, to something like DVDPodblast's live, off-the-cuff Blasting of disasters like SHOWGIRLS, HIGHLANDER 2, FROM JUSTIN TO JELLY or any of the 60 other movies they've done.
Rifftrax... Blasted!!

It is odd that Rifftrax does more popular stuff and not necessarily terrible movies. But considering they are working with a pay model, they need to release commentaries on films people actually own. I've only listened to one rifftrax of The Fifth Element and it was okay. It was only Mike though, so with the other guys, it could be better. I've been meaning to actually download the Transformers one.

I couldn't disagree with you more. As much as I appreciate the bad movie model, using current and "popular" movies means that it is more accessible, allowing me to share the experience with people who don't have subscriptions to places like Netflix.
Add in my desire to support the MST3K guys, and I say I think Rifftrax is awesome.

I just finished listening to the Rifftrax of Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, the only one I'm sure I could've talked my girlfriend into watching with me, and I've been constantly cracking up. Definitely worth the $4, especially considering I'll probably make my dad and my mom watch it with me as well at some point in the future.

I think the idea of making fun of movies that we all love and know is a great idea. I am a huge fan of the classic MST3K and was always a bit more of a Mike fan than Joel. When I heard about Rifftrax I was incredibly excited. Unfortunately I've been a bit disappointed in the 2 Rifftrax spoofs that I've heard. Transformers was ok, and The Matrix was a little less ok. There were funny moments, but not enough for the money or the slight trouble of syncing it up.
I don't think these are unfunny specifically because of the types of movies they are trashing. There is essentially a live version of MST3K here in Austin at the Drafthouse every weekend and those guys are always picking these kinds of films. 2 weeks ago I saw them do Back to the Future, a film that is still pretty good. They managed to make it funny for 2 hours without really being able to make fun of how bad it is.

All the MST3K mentions in this weeks episode made run a search for Rifftrax just to see if anyone else here used them.
I've used the Rifftrax for both Twilight movies now. So they do still do terrible movies. Just the popular terrible movies.

Aren't people supposed to do this themselves?

Yeah when I posted that they only had done like 4 Riffs total. I've been meaning to get their Transformers riffs.
