Yes it is, nice eagle eyes! I love the camera personally. It does everything I need it to do and shoots a great image. It has really come in handy for shooting greenscreen because it shoots a progressive image which really help with keying. Plus it is rally portable and compact. I highly recommend it. But I haven't compared it to the Canon cameras out there which are really highly regarded. And many industry people still go straight for the Panasonics because of the P2 cards.
yeah I think I'm definately going to get that one. I've done some research and for the price its the best on the market, I'm just starting to do film projects so I don't need interchangable lens and pro level hardware just yet. And the P2 cards are really useful but the attachable HDD available for the HVR V1U will work just as well.
Although I have been drueling recently over these three new Sony cameras:

Tell me about it!!! I can't wait to get more details about the z7u
yeah I sooo wish I had the dough to dish out for it but I as I said not at that level yet. Quick Q Steve, what programs do you use for editing? Final Cut? I just got Final Cut Express 4 again cuz of budget and am happy with it so far.
Holy ass those things are EXPENSIVE. So many buttons too. I had delusions of picking up a nice HD camera and an iPod to make semi-professional movies of my daughter's life (who will be born in March). Might have to lower the ambition level a notch or two.

Yes, I use FCP and Motion for the fx type stuff. I love FCP, it hasn't let me down so far. But I haven't used Avid or Vegas so I can't really compare it.

There are much more inexpensive HD cameras that do the job right. The reason I go for these type of cameras is because of the versatility they provide (and I am a gadget junkie). Plus I need really high quality because of the way we produce the show. There have been films released from lower quality cameras than these. And look at half the TV that is produced. They are shot on standard definition and a lot of them look great.
@MK - those are state of the art top of the line HD cameras. you can get ones for WAY cheaper that would be good for what you wanna do, one being the Sony HVR-V1U the one that Steve uses to film TRS. but that is still semi-pro there are plenty of cheaper full HD handicams that although function wise may be a little less but picture is about as good.
oh Steve about that first camera I linked to, the PMW-EX1 HD, it seems to be the answer to Panasonic's P2 as i can use Sony's new pro memory card system called SxS (aka P2 by Sony). might be something to think about, looks like it might be even better than the z7u. here is the dets page:

Don't want to thread hijack by ANY means, but do you guys have any recommendations to this effect?

with Dan's help on the directing side and your help on the production side I should be well on my way to some good indie film making, ha...
