It's actually 2.1

And even though it supports Divx, Xvid support is limited to content on your PS3's hard drive, which is a bit of a bummer.

The coolest new feature is the ability to play any downloaded or disc-based PS1 games from your PS3 via remote play on your PSP. Amazing.

Oops, gotcha.

WHOAH, I didn't know that was enabled. Awesome! :D

Yeah, I was just reading that... I'm sooo looking forward to playing all my downloaded games on my PSP

Interesting...my downloaded PSOne games are already on my PSP, but I do have a few PSOne discs that I'll have to try.

No it isn't. I just went and tested it out. Any video that played from the HDD also worked playing from a usb flash drive and streaming over my wifi network with TVersity and transcoding disabled. You probably just read a misinformed blog post. Seems many places "tested" the video playback very poorly.

The only video I had problems with out of my 100+ GB of vids, mostly XVid, was my family guy, which is in XVid with some extremely non-standard encoding settings. Even windows doesn't generate the thumbnail correctly.

Satori, WTF? Who the hell uses the realplayer video format anymore?

How does remote play work anyways? I wanted a PSP ever since I learned that people have been modding it so you can play PS1 games on it, but I was iffy on messing with firmware and bricking it. Can you play a PS1 game anywhere through remote play? Or do you have to be near the PS3 to play it?

Overall, update nothing too impressive, though the updated BD specs is nice. Means more extras for future movies! Never really cared about DivX since I'm playing my PS3 on the same screen as my PC, so I can just switch back and forth.

I'm already using my 360 to watch all those anime fansubs I burned to DVDs over the past several years that never played on regular DVD players. Only this time, on my HDTV!

Hmm, only one of my Xvid files works--unless I put them on the PS3. But I've yet to post about it on my blog. ;)

They also snuck in a cool new music visualization screen. It has a 3D model of Earth, sun and starfield background. You just pan around the Earth in various ways but the lighting is fantastic. You'll see the sun coming over the horizon, eclipses, all sorts of cool stuff.

Pointless perhaps, but neat that they got it in there just the same. It's a visualization that I'd actually keep up.

they're doing it because they're doing their best to stay afloat. I just really need that Damn Real Audio plugin.

Er....Microsoft did, the EXACT same thing, literally, like, a week before this.

In fact, I have both systems and the implementation on the 360 is a lot better. From playing around with it, the PS3 implementation is limited to DIVX, however the 360 will play a variety of MPEG4 based codecs such as Xvid and even stream them over the network. I heard someone say that the PS3 will play XVID locally from the PS3, but I haven't had any luck.

** Update**

I'm reading about different levels of success here. It's difficult to assess because a lot of the streaming programs being used would transcode the file anyway.

I'm confused here, what hand held device is the 360 able to stream games to?

RealAudio/Video is still around? Really? I thought it pretty much died a few years ago when they loaded their players full of spy-ware. I avoid the format with a passion personally.

I'm not trying to flame mind you. I'm honestly curious what is compelling for that format over the many other more popular standards?

I use TVersity with transcoding disabled. And the only issues I've had were from weird XVid encodings and usage of non-standard or old XVid codecs.

I think that is the main issue. Everyone is like "Divx and XVid" and there are atleast 5 versions of Divx and an ass ton of XVid.

I also think the issue with people reporting is they try 1 or 2 videos or try a big set that all used the same exact XVid codec and encoding settings. We really need someone to go out and test a bunch of different XVids and hopefully get a list of what is working.

I haven't had any issues with DivX or Xvid (which is all either DivX 6 or xvid downloaded from revision3.com)

It'd still be nice to be able to play the HD files for Tekzilla or TRS on it though. (And I still want WPA2 for my PSP, but that's a different subject)

All BBC streaming is done through Real Audio
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/

they have some fantastic shows all there for free, you just need Real Audio.

No worries, I don't feel in the least flamed, and I can give as good as I get if I did.

Ok. It's time for me to man up and and admit I was wrong and impatient. I finally got XVID streaming working on my PS3 by switching my TVersity to "never transcode" and I couldn't be happier. It works great.

As a PSP owner I'm a bit perplexed over the excitement over the remote play for PS1 games. I got tired of the hacking community outdoing Sony a long while ago and flashed my PSP with a custom firmware. Since then I've been converting my PSone games to play on PSP. It works beautifully and I don't need network connectivity to do it. I can still play my UMD PSP games and also enjoy the old classics on the move. If Sony allowed me to do this legitimately I'd do it.

He's refering to the fact that if you have a PSP and PS3 you can remote play (even over the internet) any media and with the newest firmware, PS1 games. You claimed that this firmware did exactly what Microsoft did.

Oh, and to be fair. Almost everyone knew that Divx and Xvid were coming to both 360 and PS3. Everyone expected it to be in the 360 fall update, since they limit themselves to 2 updates per year. So, once that came out and it had it, the question was when the PS3 was going to get it. What does all this mean? Well, your previous statement makes it sound like you think Sony saw Microsoft add the support and then they went "Oh shit, we need that!" Which simply isn't the case.

I have bought downloaded games and can now stream them to my PSP. I did some hacking in the early days and got lots of cool stuff to work but it became a bit of a pain to constantly be downloading updates for the hacks to enable the new features. When Darkalex passed the updates over to that russian group I decided that was it for me and went back to the regular Sony updates. I've been pretty happy with what I have on the PSP. Still, being able to play my downloaded games from my PS3 over to my PSP is great, especially given the fact that I have all kinds of movies on my memory card and very little room for games.

I tested out the divx/xvid support with some of the tv shows I get via p2p. Put them on the 4GB thumb drive I have and was able to watch them with no drama at all. Only thing, you have to "Display all" when listing the contents of the thumb drive, otherwise it'll show the "There are no titles" thing.

It is rather cool, as is playing from the PSOne discs via streaming. Oddly, I did get one game to play that was a download that wasn't a PSOne game or mention PSP compatibility.

This is because the PS3 checks flash drives using it's default folder structure. Which is a PS3 folder and then a Video, Music, and Photo sub-folders. If you ever copy something from a PS3 to a flash drive it'll put the content in it's respective folder.

It didn't work for me...the only oneI have that I got to work was High Stakes Poker.

I wish you didn't have to set the PS3 in remote mode though...

yeah, I'm not clear about that whole wake on LAN thing and whether it's going to work to allow you to simply connect and remotely operate your PS3.

Oh, the wake on lan thing works fine for me, but I leave mine on all of the time to run Folding@Home ...which won't start if it's in remote mode, and remote play won't work if it's on and no in remote mode. I basically have to use my PS3 to put it into remote mode in order to play it remotely...

I wish they did the folding thing for the PC because I'd much rather do that. I'm not so great with the idea of this thing packed into a small space on all the time and running. My PC has some great cooling going on. My PS3 feels like an oven from the outside. Sure it's not going to kill it in the short term. but the more heat you have the shorter life span it's going to have long term.

I'm playing around with the PS3 remote mode controlled by the psp, but I'm trying to do it with a wireless router behind a wired router acting as over all gateway. It's not going well. It looks like the routers can't pass the information through more than one router. :(
Or maybe this is where someone posts back with a link on how to do exactly this?

While i doubt its due to this update (since i updated a few days ago), my week old ps3's blueray drive just stopped spinning up disks yesterday. Anyone else lucky enough to have to get a new one like me? I'm just frustrated cause i can't lvl my COD4 online character over the break... eh i guess there are other things i should be doing now anyway....
