Excellent show, I agree 100% with the comments about Vista. I use it almost exclusively on all my PC's. While it does not deliver everything promised, it is still a vastly improved OS IMHO.

The security ALONE makes me recommend it to everyone that could stand a little protection from themselves while for power users it can be completely turned off, nice.

So let's see what OS most of other nerds / geeks use???:)

The only two things I've had issues using with Vista are most games and some, ummm, "network analysis" tools. So I keep another laptop specifically for network analysis, which boots into XP Pro or Ubuntu and I play my games on a console (PS2, XBox, Wii, and mostly XBox360)

I'm trying, TRYING to like Vista, but just can't. I hate it and am going to have Cody downgrade to XP. It's a fucking sad day when people would rather downgrade something.

Running vista hp and xp pro on another drive. still need to get another drive since I'd like to try ubuntu and have that as a 3rd boot option.

vista crashed out on me once, but surprisingly, I popped in the dvd and ran it's 'repair' tool, which somehow fixed things.

It works ok, i tend to use it primarily over XP. I'm curious about sp1, i noticed the link to download the rc1 but decided to pass and wait for the full release.

Are SecureTech and I the only ones who actually like Vista?

Games run way better on XP than they do Vista, Alex is right. I've been using XP since it came out. I tried Linux, tried Vista, XP owns them all in terms of speed and stability. Trust me.

I use XP to play EVE Online and Linux at work..
@vahnx: sorry pal, in my experience linux beats any window in stability, and mac owns them all (and I dont own a mac, so no mac fanatic here :) ).

It looks like we ARE the only two who love Vista...oh yeah, and Alex and Kevin too :)

The main benefit for XP would be gaming IMHO. That being said, the Fanboy of all Fanboys (Kevin) clearly admitted that the new Mac OS is buggy....

My experience with Vista on several machines (some upgraded some bought with Vista pre-installed) : for regular daily office usage there IS a significant increase in speed, stability and the code seems more efficiently written i.e. I can keep multiple (many multiple) windows open at once and run the machine for weeks on end without a reboot. Also, startup times are MAJORLY decreased (very noticeable on the machines I upgraded from XP) and battery time is also improved on my laptops.

The main thing is MAKE SURE your hardware can handle Vista, nothing sucks like running it on a Celeron with 512 MB RAM.

The biggest "bug" I've found is extremely slow copying or moving of files / folders via the GUI, although I've heard SP1 addresses this...I'm tempted to try SP1 RC1 just to see if this is true.

I like Vista. I don't see what the big problem with it is. I sometimes feel like going back to XP because things might be more snippy considering some things are clunky and I got this 2Ghz proc, 2GB RAM Dell Laptop with Vista installed.

I think I will hold out until SP1 comes out.

Anyone know of good tools to give your PC a nice cleanout? I put a lot of junk on here.

When SP3 is released I might consider dual booting. Is dual booting with XP difficult with Vista installed default? What's the lowest space you can use?

Also if you know where to look you can already get SP3 for XP and XP SP3 is actually faster than Vista SP1

I dual boot Vista and XP...but since that computer is mainly for games and media storage, it's almost always running the XP install. My laptop, being almost 4 years old, is stil running XP Pro

I use OS X but I run XP in Parallels for Visual Studio (and the rare instances where I need to use IE). I'm also running XP on our family PC. I have no intention of upgrading to Vista anytime soon. However, I am thinking about dual booting Ubuntu and XP on the family computer...

xp with either the noir or zune themes looks 90% like vista, and there have been addons to add transparency to things like titlebars and the taskbar since windows 98, so i don't know what the big deal about aero is.

anyway i think vista is fine how it is, i haven't had any of the bugs that friends have complained about or that i've read about.

the only thing is that for the first week using vista i was having problems with copying/moving files either from drive to drive, or from my xp box to my vista laptop. write times were just insane and moving even empty folders was taking 30+ seconds which is crazy. try moving an empty folder yourself, is it taking longer than 1 second?

this is what i did to fix my problems, which also improved performance in games:

1) disabled the "indexing service" which basically means you're losing the super speedy searching built into vista and now searching for files is only as fast as on xp. (google for more info on how to disable it or what it does)

2) uninstalled "windows live toolbar" which was pre-installed on my laptop for some reason. this was probably not causing any problems, but i'm not sure. anyway, i don't need it to index my outlook e-mails, nor do i use IE.

3) to fix the network problem, i ran the following in cmd: "netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled" (google for more info)

I really like the Zune and Media Center themes for XP.

I love Vista, only issue I have is with Second Life where the sound stuters and it freezes my pc for a few seconds. That only happens If I leave it on all night and login to Second Life.

It is dude! Try it, trust me. I haven't had a problem with it only major improvements such as the "Calculating time remaining" bug is gone which speeds up transfers.

Re-enable indexing and install sp1 rc1.

You should get by with 2.5-5 gigs if you're not installing office etc.

I put Vista. I don't dual boot, but I do have VMWare with a frequently used copy of XP Pro (I use it for some web development) and Ubuntu (Thinking of getting a different distro though)

Loving Vista - on it now. Never had any real problems with it, well apart from when I was using the free beta that MS threw out, and even then problems were few and far between. Saying that, I still use XP in work and won't be recommending the shift to Vista for a while - not until my team is good enough at supporting it. And my laptop of choice is still my MacBook... you really cannot beat that 6 hour battery life...

I dual boot on my MacBook: XP for games, and OS X for everything else.

I've used Vista before while I was at my grandma's place fixing up her new computer for her and I have to say that it's nowhere near as bad as everybody says it is. It feels like Windows, but slightly more refined. They certainly could (should) have done much more with it, but it's not the absolute abomination that everybody says it is. I would still highly recommend XP to anybody that plays games, though, or who hates DRM...
