What did you get, what are you returning, who are you spending your time with, and all of that nice junk?

Merry Christmas everyone!
I didn't ask for any comics for Christmas. Instead I decided to get everyone in my family a trade.
Dad: DC Presents Sgt. Rock - I got him some vintage ($$$ ugh) single issues last year, I'm so glad DC released this. He used to read Sgt. Rock as a kid.
Mom: Mouse Guard HC - She used to be a 2nd grade teacher and was always reading stories like this to her class.
Sis: The P.L.A.I.N. Janes - She's very artsy and so is this.
Bro: LXG Vol. 1 - He's into British literary culture.
I'm crossing my fingers that it will be a comics revolution in my household on Christmas morning.

Ah good. I've gotten very little in the way of things I can hold. Money from my parents (along with aforementioned "candy" and she also gave me some silly mormon movie), visa giftcard from my mother in law (Which is really awkward, but I'm still going to take it. I am the most selfish person on earth). I got a couple gift cards from my two sales managers at work (Red Lobster and Best Buy respectively). So mostly I need to go and get my own presents with said money and giftcards. But don't think I'm complaining. After the amount of lame gifts I've gotten in years gone by, I'm not complaining at all.

Well, it's Christmas again. I'm enjoying my favorite story of all time. It's a Wonderful Life. If you've never bothered to watch the film, you can watch the whole thing (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4867975537967299162) on Google. Nothing compares to this story in my mind. And it's become a big part of my own story, a major influence on my life and the work I want to do.
And every year I like to watch this and remind myself.
We don't know each other all too well, but we do talk an awful lot. It's been a crazy year. I hope you have a very merry Christmas. Thanks for being a part of the story.
And remember. "No man is a failure who has friends."

Got home from my first jot. I got to Future Shop at about 4:30(Doors were at 6) and there was easily 500 or so people already in line. So no lappy for Luthor. I did manage to pick up some noise canceling ear buds, an Ipod thing for the car, a 4gb usb stick, 2 CDs and a Marvel Calender all for under $200.
I could've easily picked up a new TV(there were lots of every one of the models on sale) but I talked myself out of it. I don't watch a lot of TV and rarely ever play Xbox360 so that can wait.
Supposed to go back out later this afternoon, so maybe a lappy will fall into my hands somewhere along the way.

Here's my General Discussion topic for the day...
Dave has a giftcard to the Apple Store! What should he buy?
Other things you should know:
Dave doesn't own a Mac, and the giftcard certainly won't make that happen. ;)
Dave owns an iPhone
Dave isn't sure yet how much is on the card, but $50 is probably a safe bet. He'd be willing to add his own money to it for the right purchase.

So is it just me (perhaps Ron can clear this up) or has the website started doing the same lame things it was doing earlier in the year, slow moving, half-missing pages, not picking up the last post right away, etc. I hadn't really noticed before tonight, so it easily could just be me.
I've been noticing slowness for a few days. It seems to be on any page that has a significant data dump (Ron you know what I mean). Pages that are static, or fairly so - homepage for example, seem to be slow but not death.

Depends on how important those professional contacts will be; no matter how far down the road you go, the smoke from a burning bridge can be seen for miles.
I did once leave my job of five years by getting up as if going to lunch and never going back. I never even went back to get my stuff. In other words, I recognize that my advice might be useless.

Christmas for me, lets see. Family-wise got the normal clothes/gift cards. Nice set of new headphones and a external HD of the 500gig variety. Used the gift cards on a couple of games, and BSG: Razor dvd.
Boss at work <I work at a comic store> gave me three issues of ASM. 88-90 dealing with the "Death of Captain Stacy".
I gave TONS of comics out for Christmas. I grabbed hold of the 6 issue run of "Kravens Last Hunt" for a friend who has been collecting for a year and has never read the story before. Another friend who doesn't really read comics, but is into screen-writing got the first 100 bullets and Y the last man trade, two great series that I hope someday get the big screen treatment. Last but not least, I gave my nephews the full run of Thieves and Kings by Mark Oakley. I loved reading that so much, and they are at that age where they will appreciate it a lot hopefully.
Hope everyone had a great holiday and hope to be posting regularly.

If I've leaned anything about the opposite gender it is that such questions are usually met with scorn and laughter.
"No, I do not understand why you need another handbag... well yes, there is a tangible difference between a 1080p and 1080i and the difference is critical! but that's a totally different thing than a handbag"

I had a great Christmas. Our family went to SW Virginia for the holiday and also to celebrate my in-laws' 50th wedding anniversary. My wife's siblings and their kids all came too. All of us (14) stayed in the same house and got along just peachy. See, there are Christmas miracles. We had a big reception for the in-laws on Dec. 22. Went to Christmas Eve candlelight service. Caroled on Christmas day to neighbors. A wonderful time all in all.

Mostly. It's a laptop that's about half the size of a regular lappy. It has a 7 inch screen and is almost pocket size. It runs on Ubuntu but is said to be XP compatible(although I haven't seen one that has been hacked yet). A lot of people haven't liked it because of the tiny keyboard and far too small hard drive(4GB).

My birthday is on Monday, I'm prolly not gonna do much-but I'm excited.
Well from one Capricorn to another, Happy Birthday! My birthday is in the second week of January. Maybe you have heard the "Well, you know, since your birthday is so close to Christmas, we'll just count this (one) present as covering both days..."
I'm also proud to debut a new avatar. My avatar was drawn in Berlin, 1945, cartoon portrait of Private J. H. McNally, whose service in WWII was for General Eisenhower's HQ Group Control Council which ran Europe's economy at the end of the war. As the allies occupied Berlin, Private McNally carried in his typewriter (was too nearsighted to fight outside an office). Sorry to say, I can't read the signature of the artist - it really is very good art.
The nose is what my Maine Yankee relatives call "The McNally Nose" due to its very Irish character. I got the nose from the other side of the family. But otherwise not too bad a likeness...
My son's birthday is December 26th.

"Oh, Valentines day is such a crass excuse for commercialism... but it is also my birthday... not that I'm fishing for anything of course..."
No?

No?Perhaps. When I was younger a friends father who shared my birthday told me that "when you get into a serious relationship your girlfriend will choose one or the other. Valentines Day or your birthday. She doesn't get presents on your birthday, so that choice is quickly eliminated." I've been slightly scarred since.

Yeah, as someone who has a birthday too close to Christmas like Sanchez, it just makes me think this too is part of the world wide conspiracy to be stingy on handing over the merch. ;) Well then, better use it when its good - for the short term campaign!

Happy Pre-Birthday, Sanchez.
I think we all need to form a support group for Birthdays near Holidays!
The worst part I have isn't so much the presents, it's the party. Trying to get people to get together while they're recouping from Christmas and ramping up for New Years is a pain in the butt.
I've actually had given up doing crap on my birthday for a while. Then last year a buddy of mine called BS on me, and got a bunch of people to go out.
-The girl I was dating at the time had to take her daughter to the hospital.
-Another best friend had her grandfather die 4 hours before we were leaving.
-Another friend had a run in with the law the day before and was scared so crapless, he stayed in.
So I was left with a bunch of people I really didn't want to be hanging out with.
Haven't gone out for my birthday since.

Oh Blair, I can so relate. My last birthday "party" was about 11-12 years ago. Pretty pathetic gathering. We ended up going to a memorial service for a person I didn't really know who had just died, 1996 was a bad year for that (friend of a friend who came to my birthday gathering invited us, should have said no). That's when I stopped trying to get a birthday gatherings off the ground.
Amen brother, amen.
And of course he gets two presents, one for his birthday, one for Christmas, right?;)
yes, many more than 2 actually but yes seperate gifts, seperate wrapping, seperate days.
btw, the wrapping thing is a big deal. As a parent of a child with a birthday the day after christmas, people giving him brithday presents in santa paper really pisses me off.

Yeah, I can really feel your point about the birthday presents in the santa paper - that's not cool. I don't know how old your son is, but if/when he's old enough to voice his opinion, it'll be great for him to have dad backing him all the way.

Eso - All I can say is, don't let the grumbling of old men discourage you. Don't you have college coming soon? Do I have that wrong? Have you started college yet? I found that the dour life of high school made college life all the more liberating, especially if you have such a great head start on the "smarts and self education front" so covered as well as you do. High School to College is all about realizing: "How ever did all that petty crap of High School seem so important?" But maybe I'm wrong? Anyway, that's how it was for me. For me, the change in peer group was a giant step up, huge breath of fresh air.

My cousin's birthday is on Christmas Eve, and she is the one who hosts the Xmas Eve bash for 35+ family members every year. Each year I ask her, "Did you get to do anything enjoyable for your birthday this year?" and each year she says, "This is it," as she bastes the ham for the 40th time. Kills me.
My son was born the day after my birthday. His daughter was due a day after his.
Luckily, she couldn't wait to spread the joy and came a couple of weeks early.
For those of you with birthdays too close to holidays, throw yourself a half birthday party in June!

My birthday is in the first week of August. It was awesome growing up because that weekend is always a holiday in Ontario. Then everything flipped around in my early 20s. A bunch of my friends decided that was a great weekend to get married. Then another friend had a baby on the day(they named the baby after me though, so I really shouldn't complain). I haven't celebrated my birthday on my birthday since I was 22(I'm 31 now).

I despise that Me.I just cackled a little. My middle school teachers used to tell me to be a lawyer. Even when I don't know enough on a topic someone tries to argue with me, I would make it sound like I did (not hard in the seventh grade), and in turn, never lost an argument. I have recently taken up doing this with customers at the bookstore I worked at who are trying to argue about book prices.

I know this - I would prefer to not be erased in a Crisis.
Stranger that fiction: parallel universes beguile science (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20071230/sc_afp/scienceastronomycosmologyfilmbooksentertainment)
by Annie Hautefeuille Sun Dec 30, 5:58 PM ET
PARIS (AFP) - Is the universe -- correction: "our" universe -- no more than a speck of cosmic dust amid an infinite number of parallel worlds?
A staple of mind-bending science fiction, the possibility of multiple universes has long intrigued hard-nosed physicists, mathematicians and cosmologists too.
We may not be able -- as least not yet -- to prove they exist, many serious scientists say, but there are plenty of reasons to think that parallel dimensions are more than figments of eggheaded imagination.
The specter of shadow worlds has been thrown into relief by the December release of "The Golden Compass," a Hollywood blockbuster adapted from the first volume of Philip Pullman's classic sci-fi trilogy, "His Dark Materials".
In the film, an orphaned girl living in an alternate universe goes on a quest, accompanied by an animal manifestation of her soul, to rescue kidnapped children and discover the secret of a contaminating dust said to be leaking from a parallel realm.
Talking bears and magic dust aside, the basic premise of Pullman's fantasy is not beyond the scientific pale.
"The idea of multiple universes is more than a fantastic invention -- it appears naturally within several scientific theories, and deserves to be taken seriously," said Aurelien Barrau, a French particle physicist at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), hardly a hotbed of flaky science.

Just got home from my Cleveland football trip.
Couple things:
1. Cleveland, the town and most of the people are very cool.
2. The rest of the people are very red necky and quite assholeish. My friend, a 49ers fan, was ribbed badly for most of the game, and none of it was good natured. There was a girl in the next section over from us who security had to help out of the stands because she was wearing Steelers jersey.
3. I wish cab fare was as cheap in the rest of the world as it was in Cleveland. We were stuck in the middle of football traffic for over 20 minutes and our total cab fee was $8.75. I was amazed.
