Here's what happened: the site's forums got so infused with spam posts that my service provider had to shut it down. I haven't had the time to fix it. So if anyone out there is a WordPress expert and knows what to do, get in touch with me. Thanks.

Reinstall wordpress. Start fresh. And install Akismet spam protection (free). Then, in the comments settings window in wordpress, check the following two boxes:

# Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
# Comment author must have a previously approved comment

This will pretty much eliminate your spam.
