I must know if the PS3 is a good Blue-ray player. Just got a HD-DVD player two weeks ago and while it's great it can't play all the movies I would want to see in high def. And also I want to play those new fangled next gen games I've heard so much about. So is it a rad or bad blu-ray player?

from everything i have heard the answer is "it's good for the money" not anywhere near the best but it's price isn't bad and you get the added gaming bonus.

couple months back a guy at bestbuy told me the ps3 doesn't have a blueray player, only an emulator. when i asked just what that meant he got confused and started making a lot less sense

For "good for the money" do you mean as good as a comparatively priced set top player? It will most likely be hooked up to this 40" Sony HDTV I got on January of this year which I assume is still 2007. I just wanted to know so one day within the next two months or so I can contribute to the growing number of dark coloured boxes under the television.

Seemed to be really good to me, but I am in no way a videophile or have seen any other Blu-Ray players.

It is a brilliant Blu-Ray player, definately on par with similar (and a lot of the higher) priced stand alone models around. You can't go wrong for the price, with all of the other features of the PS3 I cannot understand why someone would pay more for something that does a lot less.

Plus the firmware updates automatically to extend the capabilities of the Blu-Ray drive (the latest firmware update allows for picture-in-picture) so you needn't worry about it being superseded any time soon.

That's good to hear as I might go with the 80GB PS3. The 60GB model seems to be missing from the online pages of BB and if what I've heard is correct that the 40GB model does not play PS2 titles. Am I correct or was that just a rumor?

That's correct. No backward compatibility for the 40GB version.

The PS3 is a very nice Blu-Ray player and, as mentioned, the firmware updates bump it ahead of many standalone models that lack any ability to upgrade.

i couldnt say, since my ps3 disk drive just died 2 days ago after having it for a week....

sending it back and getting a new one tho.
i assume, apart from this non spinning up of disks problem, it is a good player.

I really like it as a blu-ray player, but then not owning anything else I wouldn't know any different. I think the optional additional controller is a little pricey, but using the gamepad has worked fine so far. I just recieved my 5 free movies and sadly they weren't the ones that I'd chosen, but it is good to see the different level of qualities that are being offered as hi-def.
