Quick question, a vga splitter like this one

can be used to output to 2 things at the same time right?

Yes - but the signal will be degraded and each monitor will duplicate the content of the other (duh), so it could be a kinda crappy connection. If your computer has the outputs, you are better off connecting both screens and using the graphics card to duplicate the content.

Having said that, we used to use similar cables to have a multiple monitors running at an seperate location for information purposes (production tracking) at a steel plant I worked at.

At work we use VGA splitters. And they do not duplicate the signal. Basically they act like if you had a video card with two outputs.

So, you can have different images on each monitor?

A video card with two outputs can display seperate images on each monitor.
These splitter cables take a single output from a monitor and send the same signal to each monitor - with each display being a duplicate (or clone) of the other.
