Why did Patrick say the A standard instead of the common B standard
"TIA/EIA-568-A T568A" WG, G, WO, B, WB, O, WBr, Br
"TIA/EIA-568-B T568B" WO, O, WG, B, WB, G, WBr, Br

"B" is the one commonly used by network people and "A" is used by telcom people (the cat 5 from your T-1 smart jack (If made by the telcom)to your T-1 interface might be "A")

and any Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6e thats store bought is "B" standard

infact the cable that was shown in the ep was "B" standard
the only time I've used the "A" standard is to make a crossover cable
(one end "A" one end "B")=crossover

maybe because it doesn't matter as long as both ends are exactly the same (i.e. straight through, not a cross over cable)? Seriously, I have a few cables where all 8 are completely different colors, none of the white striped green stuff.

all UTP and STP Cat5-6e have those 8 colors on some the stripe is less noticeable but its there (or the wire maker is cheap and didn't use enough color to make the stripe)

the the two standards are made with xt (cross talk) in mind
of course you can swap one pair for another but its not proper and if your making the cable as a job function then it can hurt you or the person that one day has to change an end (you'll really be messing with em if you do non-standard cables)

Maybe he doesn't know what he's talking about? TIA568B is by far the most common pinout of ethernet cabling. TIA568A is sometimes used for ISDN cabling.
