Seems as if the TRS guys don't watch Dexter. If they did, it would be high up on their top shows list (Dexter is my "The Shield"). I was glad to see Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia getting some love though.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEVE!

Loved the episode, adored seeing all the top picks for the year. Thanks for giving us yours, too Steve!

Congratulations Dan, for doing Netflix perfectly. :D I was very proud of you!

I was hoping Pushing Daisies would win out for show of the year (and if you had included Steve's pics, it might have!) but you picking Avatar just proves to me that I really really have to finally watch it.

I'll watch it when you all finally watch Dexter!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

Eminem below me reminded me, loved "The Jerk" opening!

PS. I use too many exclamation points!!!

Was the opening just making fun of the AT&T Phonebook commericials, or was that a scene from a movie?

1. Once
2. The Bourne Ultimatum
3. No Country for Old Men
4. Knocked Up
5. Rescue Dawn

Children of Men made the top of my list last year so I can include it here.
If you guys haven't seen Once, you NEED to see it, especially Jeff I think you would love it. I was a little surprised not to see Jason Bourne making your lists. Zodiac just missed out on my top five but I also loved that movie.

Anyways great episode, just thought I'd add my list.

Daisies and Dexter by far for the year. I don't always watch TRS but i tuned in for this episode and i am shocked that they don't watch Dexter. If your looking for a show that gets progressively better show by show there is no contest. I came home on the weekends from college to specifically watch the re-run of Dexter on Saturday night. My plea to TRS is that they must watch Dexter and then talk about it on the show. Perhaps a DVD segment.

Dexter is awesome! Season 2 got better and better and the finale was amazing.

My top 5 TV shows

2) Dexter
3) Avatar
4) Weeds
5) Entourage

Special Mention: Dirt

I will add another plea to watch Dexter. It really is amazing show! Also, Curb Your Enthusiasm didn't get a mention, but I'm glad It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia did. And it's clear that I need to watch Pushing Daisies too.

I think I was happy with all of the top picks! Almost did want to see Puzzle Quest win. It should be the official Totally Rad game. Loved the e-mail answers at the end, as well as Steve's surprise picks.

And still curious to know what the gang thinks about Sweeney Todd. I saw it and loved it!

The fact that Dexter is not on any of the TV lists is incredible, and the same with Journeyman, my absolute favorite show of the year.

With games it gets really subjective, my list is:
1. Assasin's creed
2. Forza 2
3. Halo 3
4. Call of Duty 4
5. Crackdown

But like Alex, the game I play the most is not on the list, Live for Speed, but that requires a pretty deep interest in cars.

Lovely ep, loved the tie. Dan, your story was great about bonding with Priscilla's family was wonderful.

Anakin wanted me to say thanks for giving the TRS award to Avatar and for mentioning Puzzlequest. He is not allowed to play most of the other games you mentioned but the fact that Mario and Puzzlequest got mentioned made him feel so "cool" and with it.

Thanks for a fun ep and Happy Birthday Steve!

Jeff. Usually we're on the same page. I have so many times found myself throwing my hands up in the air and exclaiming, "YES! Exactly!"

Now it seems the Honeymoon is Over.

So You Think You Can Dance.

I was silently seething, then near the end of the segment when you brushed it off in such a superior manner... well the mercury just rose, rose, rose... got to the top of the thermometer... it expanded like a balloon and POP!

I don't care about the judges. I don't care about the personal struggles of the dancers. Whatever. Boo hoo you lost or yay you won. You love your mom. That's great. Don't give a frick. But their cast of choreographers is phenomenal. Pair that with the raw talent that comes through and it's just an absolute joy to watch.

Dancing not your thing. Okay fine. But come on. It just sad to see someone being so cavalier about it.

Thank you for posting this. I have seen The Jerk. Not a huge fan but it is OK. When I was watching the opening, I tried to read too much in. I was trying to replace words but keep emotion. I think if Alex used the stereotypical accent I would have gotten it. Jeff was on.

The top 5's I have to nearly agree with it all. Although TV is lost on me as I have lost interest. Everyone tells me Pushing Daisies is great. I guess I should check it out. For an all around value I would give Orange Box the kick though. I don't have the PC to push any HL2 games, plus all of it as a pack for the price of one. Can't argue that value.

With the end. Dans' story about the comedy club. A lot of comics our age are doing similar bits. It is a new generation of comedy. I say check out comedy clubs more often. Comedy, especially Stand Up is getting into its' own golden age. Since TV sucks, it is worth the trip. Clubs, even smaller ones are getting great acts at cheap prices, for the club and the patron. Put it this way, there are more comics than clubs that can hire them. That means you only see the best. Although I have grown tired of all of the blue collar guys except for Ron White, I can say that I saw Larry the Cable Guy long before he broke. He was doing jobs with, and I am not kidding, 5 people in the crowd. Now he sells out theaters of up to 5k and more.

Similar to my days going to the ballpark in Albany NY, and seeing Jeter, Pettite, Bernie hell all of that dynasty team of the Yankees.

Gents,

Another awesome episode. Its just gone around 03:08am here in South Africa, and just completed by far the best TRS episode. The top 5 picks were very cool. I love the honesty that you guys portray in all your reviews and the witty quips with each other is very entertaining.

So you think you can dance? ... I um ... don't really what to say about that mate ... completely did not expect that :/

Lads, all the best for 2008. TRS is only going to go from strength to strength. I got a couple of the mates at the office hooked on Diggnation after watching the Live at MacWorld episode. Now I can safely say, they are also huge fans of TRS.

Preach on my brothers :)

Hmm... okay, I'll admit that I dismissed it out of hand - perhaps unfairly. Like Alex, the first image that came to my mind when I heard "dancing" was Dancing with the Stars, which is dreadful. I am not a fan of reality TV in general and assumed people dancing would not make me get over my bias. Perhaps I shouldn't have judged without seeing it first.

CHILDREN OF MEN has staggeringly great direction, but the script is nothing special and there are a few supporting performances that are just atrocious.

PAN'S LABYRINTH was the best movie released this year. With HOT FUZZ and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN very close behind.

In regards to the towel trick, it will only fix your Xbox 360 temporarily (though it might eventually red ring as a result; the extended warranty is the only true solution). It is my understanding that the RROD occurs because the 360 is unevenly cooled (or heated) so one side of the board gets warped. Wrapping a towel around it will evenly heat the 360, solving the problem temporarily, but it doesn't solve the original cooling problem.

I do agree with most of the choices guys, big thumbs up from the back-woods in Michigan!

A few of my picks:

- Movie: I'd have to go with Transfomers. I hadn't had that much fun during a movie in a long, long time. As a matter of fact, thats the first movie I've seen in theaters three or more times... I loved it that much!

- Game: Personally speaking, I spent most of this year playing Forza Motorsport 2 after that came out in May, but I do find it hard to justify it as GOTY given some of its shortcommings. PGR4? Yeah... Why not? Its probably one of the most fun games I've played in a while, and the addition of bikes made it great.

- TV: Unfortunately work gets in the way of a lot of my TV viewing these days, but of my new shows that I've started watching, Torchwood has to get my nod. I like the characters and the story, and I can't wait for the new season to begin here in the next few weeks!

I have for the most part refrained from commenting on the lists. I have not played as much as I should have, not gone to theaters as much as I should, nor have I watched as much TV as I should to be able to comment on it all. That is why I watch TRS. If I get bored, I check out what they check out.

I am blown away by the "So you think you can Dance" thing. Dan, really man, reality TV is on your list? Hell man, reality TV is the reason I look to Podcasts as an alternative that is actually entertaining. I like Jeffs' quote. "This strike won't end TV. It will end GOOD TV." I am on that wagon friends.

We may get away with another year even of movies with this strike in effect. It won't be long, we will no longer be able to choose from new shows. They may force us to watch M*A*S*H again. Then you will see me on CNN leading a group to a mass suicide. Get your purple sashes and Kool-Aide ready.

I have to say my piece here which I think other people would agree is that the movie channel shows (except for The Sopranos and a very brief mention of The Wire) are pretty much being left out. I hadn't see much, if any, mention of Dexter, Weeds, Entourage, Extras, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Tell Me You Love me or any other great shows from the movie channels (HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, etc). I really think that if you guys thought 2007 was a let down for TV that you're missing out on some of the greatest television. Perhaps I'm wrong and you guys watch these shows and either don't like them or don't want to include them, maybe it's just the fact that it was such a big year for games and time is limited on the show for the TV segment. It just kind of made me feel like there's an entire other echelon of TV entertainment going unnoticed when the comment was made that this year was a let down for TV.

I don't know if you guys are like my roommates and simply don't see the potential benefit from paying more for the movie channels and don't subscribe to them. However, I have a feeling that you may have Netflix and should check out their TV selection and more specifically the aforementioned television titles.

I don't care what anyone says, I still think Avatar trumps all of these live action shows. Not to say that American animation is underrated, as most other show on Nick and CN suck (excluding adult swim). CN was the last haven of good cartoons, until they started shoving out these one-season pile-of-crud shows like Storm Hawks and Tak and Back at the Barnyard, and more persitent disgraces like Ben 10.

I'm going to have to second no mention of Journeyman.. that show was by far one of the more enjoyable series I've had the pleasure to watch on TV this past year.. I decided on a fluke to watch it after Heroes (which really dropped the ball in season 2 btw) and it quickly became the show I couldn't wait til next week to watch. What's up w/ the lack of love?

And Flight of the Concords, that is such a hilarious show! C'mon guys! Your movie and game lists were spot on, but I dunno about those TV lists..

Alex, first of all, THANK YOU for mentioning Supernatural on your TV list! I've been a fan of this show since day one, and it really filled the need in my life for a new X-Files type show. I love urban legends, and they hit all the right points, most of the time. And the dialogue between Sam and Dean is spot on for brothers, and having many, I feel safe in making that call. =)

Back when it first started, I was sure that it would be the show most likely to be cancelled, and even more sure once I'd fallen for the show, and to see it now in its third season fills me with joy.

And any show that uses the occasional Blue Oyster Cult song is aces in my book.

Good lists all around, guys, although a few points I might not agree with, but hey, that's the whole point of lists and opinions.

Finally crawling out of lurking mode on these forums for a few years now, just to say that. I may appear more often. Thanks for a great show guys, and lets here more about comics! I wasn't expecting a top five comics lists from you guys, but it would have been nice. =)

I loved the episode guys. I completely agree with you on No Country for Old Men and COD4 but we seem to be way off on television... especially because of no mention of LOST. The season finale for Season 3 is quite simply the best mind blowing episode I have ever seen. Plus, I was in agreement with Alex about Pushing Daisies. After watching four episodes I couldn't stand it any longer. It was super super repetitive to me.

On another note, if i remember correctly, didn't Jeff agree to watch LOST season 3 when the DVD came out? How's that going? :) Would be a perfect time since season 4 is coming back on Jan 31st. The season finale must be seen by all!!!!!

Anyways, that's all I got, really enjoyed this weeks show.

Am I the only one that didn't like Half-Life 2 Episode 2 as much as the others? I don't see myself replaying that for a long time...mainly due to the numerous 'defend the base' situations. I agree with Call of Duty 4 and Bioshock being there though. (Rented Puzzlequest, but after a few attempts, never could get the interest in playing it very much.)

As far as So You Think You Can Dance?...I've seen an episode. That was one too many...since I gave me the feeling I was watching part of an extended tryout/audition for backup dancers. Not something I have any interest in watching. I have started watching Avatar...and while I haven't even finished the first season, I have to agree with them on it. (I was renting the discs from Netflix, and after the first three, wound up buying the first season box for $26 and renting the second season.)

I can't really say too much on movies, as I don't do the theatre experience, so unless it's something I know I want on DVD I have to wait to rent it.

My top 5
Movies
1. Mr. Brooks (I could never see Costner play a serial killer, but he was fantastic.)
2. Eastern Promises
3. The Bourne Ultimatum
4. Dan in Real Life
5. Transformers (A tad too long but still good, sorry Jeff.)

Still extremely mad because I haven't seen Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men, or Juno yet but I'm doing that fairly soon. Who needs money right?

I wish I had a top 5 for gaming but I'm so far behind in gaming, I finally just got a 360 for Christmas. :(

Tv wise.
1. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (never ceased to amaze. Charlie Day is a hero of mine.)
2. Scrubs
3. Dexter completely blew me away. It suprised me.
4. 30 Rock
5. Heroes

Favorite Documentary : Richard Engel's War Zone Diary, came out in March, very raw and intense.

Ok i'm done i swear :)

Seems as if the TRS guys don't watch Dexter. If they did, it would be high up on their top shows list (Dexter is my "The Shield"). I was glad to see Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia getting some love though.

Exactly! Dexter is the best show that my wife and I have found. I can't believe some of the choices these guys had! Watch Dexter dudes, and you will change your choices. I can't wait until you guys watch both seasons and review it.

On another note, about the website, I liked the old one better. This new one isn't Safari friendly but perhaps it's the flash.

Unrelated, my Top 1's this year are:

Movie: Pirates of the Caribbean 3

I'm going to block you, soon as I get back from throwing up.

P.S. I'd like the boys to watch Weeds from the beginning as well as Dexter. I've never heard any of you mention Weeds and thats a pretty damn unique show - sucks to miss an episode or watch it out of order or miss the last 5 seconds though.

I won't post my top 5's here since there's already a thread for that. But I will talk about them somewhat.

Movies - I'll have to say that I haven't seen a good amount of the top films this year (No Country For Old Men, Gone Baby Gone, etc.) But the movie I've enjoyed the most by far was Transformers. I'm a big fan of the old cartoon, and this really felt like a live action version of one of those episodes. And seeing the movie on opening night with a bunch of other Transformers fans was an amazing experience. A couple of movies that were in limited release 2006 and wide release 2007 (I'm pretty sure) were Children of Men and Pan's Labyrinth. Both amazing, but probably not noted this year, because they were on many lists from last year.

Videogames - I'm a diehard Nintendo fanboy and I don't really care for FPS games or RPGs, so no Call of Duty or Mass Effect for me. Mario Galaxy is the obvious answer here for me, although I've probably played Picross DS more than every other game this year.

TV - I don't watch a lot of TV, but Supernatural and Reaper are at the top of my list. I'm glad Alex mentioned Supernatural in reference to Buffy. It definitely does fill the hole Buffy/Angel left when they went off the air.

also...

Hmm... okay, I'll admit that I dismissed it out of hand - perhaps unfairly. Like Alex, the first image that came to my mind when I heard "dancing" was Dancing with the Stars, which is dreadful. I am not a fan of reality TV in general and assumed people dancing would not make me get over my bias. Perhaps I shouldn't have judged without seeing it first.

-Jeff

So You Think You Can Dance is head and shoulders above Dancing with the Stars in terms of quality and entertainment. The biggest reason is that the people on SYTYCD can actually dance, and don't just walk around the dance floor while someone dances around them.

I wouldn't say soulless. I thought the concept was good, but the execution was soooo dull, it wasn't even saved by the cinematography.

In my opinion, Children of Men is the best film made in the last TEN years, let alone one year. The first time I've been completely bowled over by a film in sooooo long.

I did, however, see it in Melbourne in October last year, so it couldn't make a top ten for me this year....

I registered just to reply to this thread and state how utterly shocked I am to see that Dexter was not included, nor even considered, for the top 5. I think it's monumentally important that ALL of the TRS guys throw this on their Netflix queue. It's incredible television.

I'd also like to say that I really enjoyed The Tudors on Showtime this past year. I know many don't care for it, but I feel, despite some acting issues, that it had a wonderful first season.

Also, this one's for Jeff or Dan: Did you guy see Manufactured Landscapes?

And Alex; what's your beef with Super Mario Galaxy?
Galaxy is hands down the best game i've played in 2007. Quite honestly, it may the best game of the 00's for me.

I just watched No Country For Old Men. All the hype about this movie really got my expectations high. After watching it, I have to say it was not boring, but slow paced. If Michael Bay made this movie, it would be 10 minutes long. Personally, I think it's over-hyped. The movie is too "artsy" for it's own good. You start watching the movie thinking it's about one thing, but the ending shows that it's not about what you think it is about. Yeah, it has it's "philosophical" and "parallel" concepts that most art movies have, but after watching it, I went "You put me through all that just to show me this?!". The movie leads you to get emotionally attached to the wrong character.

But my top movie of the year, and I mean "top" as in "I enjoyed it the most", and not "top" as in "best movie production", will have to be *Stardust*. Movies I enjoyed in list mode:
* Stardust (No.1)
* Live Free Or Die Hard
* Bridge To Terabithia
* Pan's Labyrinth
* 300 (One thing about 300 is that there's blood flying everywhere, but none of it falls on to the ground. It's always "clean".)
* Grindhouse: Planet Terror
* The Simpsons Movie

TV-wise, Lost, House and The Simpsons are the only worthy shows to watch. Pushing Daisies is different, but it's not that good. 24 is a total failure. If I have too choose a reality show, It would be The Amazing Race.

I don't play games that much, but right now I',m playing Aquaria. http://bit-blot.com/aquaria/ . It's good.

FYI--

I LOVED 1st and second seasons of Weeds, this season I am enjoying but its not BEST SHOW OF THE YEAR. I enjoy watching Entourage but its not BEST SHOW OF THE YEAR. I do not enjoy extras or Curb Your Enthusiasm past season 3 so it's also not BEST SHOW OF THE YEAR FOR ME. I REALLY wanna see The Wire (after the shield) and Dexter...

Hey guys - this is my 1st post, I started tuning in each week after seeing Alex on "Attack of the Show" and have since gone back and watched all the episodes I had missed.

I love it when people make lists. Here are some of my opinions.

"Once" should be on someone's Top 5 Movie lists. It was amazing.
"No Country For Old Men" is an easy number 1 for most people and I would agree.

I think "Crackdown" should be on a Top 5, you guys did bring it up, so I guess that's good enough.
Now I am going out to buy COD4 because of you guys, having played Counterstrike for 1,000 years, I don't know why I haven't bought it yet in the first place.

As for TV, I watch waaaaay too much TV (good and bad). I am happy someone brought up "Supernatural". It is an amazing show, and after every episode I go to iTunes and buy the songs from the episode for my iPod - Supernatural Playlist.

Quick question, did any of you guys watch "The Dresden Files"? Maybe I am alone on this one, but I thought it was one of the best shows of the year. Also for TV I think someone should have brought up the Discovery Channel "show" "Planet Earth", it aired in 2007 in HD and was GLORIOUS to watch on my DLP HDTV.

Cheers.

Well I would consider it a 2007 movie because it was only released in 16 theaters to begin with... it then got its "official" release to 1,209 theaters... I would consider it a 2007 movie. I think of the limited release as a "special preview".

your movie lists were completely unexpected.

i liked Alex's list the most even though he included Transformers which had a terrible story but amazing CG effects. Ratatouille was awesome and should've been included in all your top 5s.

There's already 10 pages, but we're probably doomed to even more "you didn't pick..." posts. I like the general approach you guys took to this, by listing what you enjoyed rather than trying to over justify your picks.

I totally agree, this year has been crap for TV. And we can't completely blame the writer's strike, because it was crap at the start and we've only recently run out of scripts and pre-recorded episodes.

Jeff, I think you should watch "So you think you can Dance?" next summer. Give it a shot, because as Dan said it's a mind blowing display of art and talent. I've always hated American Idol, and this show is everything idol isn't. I can say that with all heterosexuality intact, that show is just wicked.

I'm a little surprised that none of the TRS guys were into Journeyman. For me it was my favorite show of the past months. Though, to be fair I've only been regularly watching Journeyman, Heroes, Stargate: Atlantis, and Boston Legal. I started watching a few of the shows they mentioned, but usually if something doesn't get me in the first couple of episodes I'll just stop watching.

Also, Alex mentioned Supernatural. This is a great show. I watched Season 1 of it, and had to stop watching Season 2 because I wouldn't catch it regularly. I'd catch an episode then miss two, and it just didn't flow right. But yea, if anyone liked Buffy or Angel you should definately check it out.

So sorry to do this, but my "you didn't pick..." for TV award goes to Dexter. I admittedly don't watch a ton of TV, and have heard of but not seen many of the shows mentioned but I think Dexter thus far is awesome.

And when the hell are you guys going to review UT3 for the PS3? It needs to be getting more coverage as the past year for Sony has been nothing but bashing the system and it's library. It's about time a title came out that really exemplified what the system can do.

I'm not one to get all hoity-toity with this kind of stuff, as my tastes tend to be, hrm, specific, for lack of a longer description, but I'm honestly floored that only two other people have mentioned Stardust. How could you not love this movie? It was entertaining without being weighty, well-developed without being confusing, and downright gorgeous to look at. It was my hands-down movie of the year; I've never left a theater happier about cinema than after watching that, including my most anticipated flick this year, Transformers (which was good, but Stardust's screenplay "lubricates" all over the giant robots).

After the enthusiasm in that episode, I thought one of the guys would at least give it a nod. Ah well, can't win them all....

CHILDREN OF MEN has staggeringly great direction, but the script is nothing special and there are a few supporting performances that are just atrocious.

What no love for Stardust, Dan?! Honestly I LOVED that movie. Loved, loved, loved it. It was already 2008 when I saw it but since it was a 2007 released movie, it's definitely on my list.

Best movies of 2007:

1. Stardust
2. Sunshine
3. Transformers
4. Death at a Funeral
5. Zodiac

I have to say that I haven't watched as many movies as I wanted to last year so I'm still catching up on a lot of them, but Stardust was definitely a big surprise for me. I simply fell in love with it! And Sunshine was also a big surprise. I had no idea I was going to enjoy it as much as I did. And like Alex, I really liked Transformers. As cheesy and long as it was, I loved every second of it :D

And aside from the toilet humor, Death at a Funeral was great. Zodiac was a gem, a real slow burner but it totally freaked me out (in a good way). I'm not sure I'd watch it again, but it was really good.

Best TV shows of 2007:

1. 30 Rock
2. The Office
3. Bones
4. Life
5. Stargate Atlantis

As much as I enjoyed Pushing Daisies (and Criminal Minds), unfortunately I didn't have room for it on my top 5. And now the confession, my two guilty pleasures of 2007 (the shows I say I don't watch, but really, I do)... were Gossip Girl and Women's Murder Club. What can I say, I'm such a girl and I like my cheesy shows :D

I cannot BELIEVE I just confessed that. I'm so ashamed ;)

No games since I didn't really play any in 2007. Unless you count the occasional session of Bejeweled.
