So I am getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow? Anyone else been through this? Is it as horrible as some people say? How long should I expect to be out for? What should I do? Eat? Suggestions, advice, etc are all welcome.
Nothing I like more than a big knife party in my mouth. :-/

It was the worst experience I have ever been through in my life. I had all 4 of mine removed. The pain was SO bad, I actually could NOT sleep.
My suggestion. Use ICE for a solid day afterwards (I didn't like a dumbass, and my face looked like a chipmunk.) Get pain medication and take it.

Mine went fine. But my friend went through hell. I'm an old fart and just had two out last year. But no real problems. They didn't knock me out or anything. Tiny little cut, twist and pull of the pliers. Done. Numb for a few days, but no real pain.
friend on the other hand had four out all at once, except he had FIVE out!! One of his wisdom teeth had another one underneath it! He was almost useless for a full week.
It's different for everyone, so depends on your own jaw/teeth config. But never fun. Good luck.

Everything will be alright. Regardless of what the Dentist gives you for pain, I have a better home remedy. 1/3 water 2/3rds honey. Warm that up and gargle with it. You will barely feel anything after the visit.

For some people extraction is a piece of cake, but it sound like Crumbles and I had the same experience.
My wisdom teeth were severly impacted. I had to be knocked out (some people are OK just being numbed), and as soon as the dentist started getting in there it was touch and go whether they would need to take me to hospital to get them extracted.
Needless to say, I needed tha pin meds after they were all pulled, and unlike Crumbles, I kept my jaw pretty much wrapped in ice for 2 days afterwards. The swelling wasn't too bad, but I had sever bruising on each side that was OK until it hit that attract purple/yellow stage.
In the end though, it was worth it. Until that point (at 27) I had never had any dental work done. No fillings, not braces. Straight, white teeth ... but a steadily increasing pain in my jaw resulting in migraines.
Sorry for the horror story. My case was extreme. I am sure yours will go well.

balzout? You getting all four out? Can't you get bottoms out now, top later or something? Are they impacted and/or infected, Or "just recommended" to add to the dentists Porche fund?

add some cayanne pepper to the honey and water

My wife had hers out around age 22 or so and she was out at the movies with her friends that night.
I, unfortunately, have a horrible story to add. I had mine out when I was 27 and had a rough time with it. I was laid up for about a week and a half with a really bad infection. I actually had to go back to the oral surgeon and have them drain some fluid which was pretty awful.
So, there's two opposite ends of the spectrum. I hope you get the easy end. :D

I had all four out at once. All were impacted, which means they are coming in at the wrong angle. Day of I was in pain, but the pain killers took care of the pain. I was fine the next day. Face was swollen, but nothing else. I drove myself back to the oral surgeon's office for my follow up visit.
I'm sure the oral surgeon will tell you this, but don't drink from straws. The suction created can dislodge the clots.
Everyone has their own experience. Hopefully you will do okay. If you experience really bad pain and bad taste in your mouth, don't hesitate to call the doctor because you could have dry socket, which is where the clots come out too soon. I know some one that happened to and it hurts a lot.
Good luck. You'll be fine.

I don't keep up with dental technology or anything... but I had mine removed around 10 or 11 years ago. Maybe there are newer meds, or technology that will make it a better experience.
I wasn't knocked out, just numbed. The operation wasn't painful, but sure felt weird. I could literally feel the roots of the teeth swimming their way out of my gums. It was really weird.
Like I said though, I was a dumbass thinking since the operation wasn't painful, I'd be fine. Fast forward about 10 hours later, and I wanted to die.
Use ice like token did. I'm sure that would have helped me out a lot.

I spent several days, swollen, bleeding, aching and high on pain killers.
What should I do? Eat?
You won't be hungry from all the blood you're going to swallow. Hint, try not to swallow too much blood. Ask doc for a curved nozzle syringe to flush the holes out with later when you do start eating, cus you won't be brushing them.
Nothing I like more than a big knife party in my mouth.
I've been stabbed inside my mouth putting a hole in the back wall of my throat - you're getting good mouth knife party treatment.
Much like Mtv, chemotherapy, paris hilton talking and wisdom teeth pulling - pot helps.

Should I get my wisdom teeth removed? They aren't bothering me and I think it's only a couple that haven't come out.

You might not notice them bothering you. I had all four removed at once because there wasn't enough space in my mouth and they were just pushing other teth out of the way - I wasn't in 'pain' beforehand. Just out of space. Ask a tooth doctor.

Mine haven't bothered me, Maybe do to the fact I have one less tooth than most people so I got plenty of space, something to do with my family genetics.

I got all of mine taken out last summer. I was pretty scared, but it was an easy process.
The first thing they did was give you a few minutes of laughing gas while they put all of the needles and such in you. (But the gas makes you not care about what they're doing.) The last thing I remember is the guy telling me "Now, go ahead and open your fist and I will take the band off of you arm" (It was general anesthetic intravenously)The next thing I remember is my entire face being numb and wondering where the hell I was and what happened. The anesthetic messed me up pretty good :D
But they gave me vicodin for the pain, and some steroids for the swelling. I didn't have any pain, at all as long as I kept my mouth shut. You're going to want to eat soup for a few days to avoid opening your mouth too wide. As mentioned, use ice for the first 2 or 3 days - It really does help. If you don't, what happened with me is the swelling will stretch on the stitches, and then you are only making more pain for yourself.
A week after the stitches started to dissolve, and it was all done with. For me, no pain or anything - And the laughing gas was a pretty weird experience! If they give you the choice to be knocked out or not, I say go for it, I can't imagine being awake for the entire procedure. For me, it was about 45 minutes.

I only ever got 2 of them and had them pulled 10 years or so ago. Everyone I talked to said it would be painful, and for me atleast it really wasn't. I was a bit sluggish from being put under, but at no point did I take any of my pain killers after the first doese. I guess I was just really very lucky.

I have two that broke, won't get them taken out. The roots died, so they're okay. I can take pain and having my intestines cut apart (been there, done that), but the thought of this freaks me out too much.

Just thought I would give you guys a quick update on how things went. Well...Things went GREAT! They probably couldnt have gone any better. Got right in with little waiting and just got it over with. The process was easy as can be. I was relaxed with the gas, then had an IV put in to put me to sleep and then woke up and it was all over with. Coming home was a breeze and then I just parked myself on the couch watching election coverage for tomorrow in Iowa. It was really very easy and I am so fortunate to live in a small enough town that the care is awesome. (Im sure its not because of a small city but thats what Ill say hehe). We will see how the next few days are. So far I have only eaten mash potatoes and a milkshake that my best friends brought me....I was told it will get worse before it gets better but we will see.
Painkillers are amazing by the way. Anytime I feel it getting soar, I just pop one of those in and it goes away within 5 minutes. Of course I cant take more than one in three hours but that is plenty of time for it to soothe the pain all the way. Its been a great experience. Im very excited to finally get it over with and I know it is a very individual basis but anyone who is getting this done...dont worry about it. It really isnt as bad as people say.
Thanks for support, advice, etc guys. Much appreciated and Ill keep you guys updated.

That's as far as I got. Can't handle needles. Can someone else summarize this in a way that won't make me choke? Thanks.

Glad to hear it went well.
The only thing I remember of mine being extracted is the IV being put in. After that the next thing I knew they were waking me up and having me take pain killers.

Things were going well until he say them pull out the big hammer and chisel. The pain was excrutiating, but nothing compared to when they reached in with the pliers and he heard the dentist say "Oops. Wrong tooth."

Oh it wasn't that bad. I mean, as long as I had prescription vicodin left. Heh. That was fun. If your dentist doesn't prescribe vicodin for you though, you're going to be going through hell. And the cotton swabs you have to place in the back of your mouth can make your mouth dry as hell, and it's really irritating when they get soggy. And you'll need to get used to spitting out blood once in a while. And eating extremely soft/liquid foods for a couple of days.
If you're squeamish, I'd recommend you have them knock you out. They'll stick a longish needle (maybe 4" or so) in the top of your hand and up your arm, and it'll burn for a couple of seconds, but you'll be out cold within 5 seconds, and next thing you'll know they'll be done. Otherwise you can have them keep you awake, which would be cool because you'd be able to watch them yank your teeth out. Oh, and for a few days after the procedure, you'll probably look like a chipmunk. Your cheeks get really puffy.
Now from what I understand, this is actually pretty rare, so don't let this scare you. This is just what happened to me. When I got my wisdom teeth yanked, my teeth began re-arranging to fill in the gaps left since my teeth were a little crowded due to the wisdom teeth. As a result of this grinding and moving around my teeth were doing, my gums got irritated and, in the pocket where my lower-left wisdom tooth was, a pool of puss developed. It was extremely gross. Every time I opened my mouth some of it would squeeze out on top of my tongue. Puss tastes like shit. It lasted for about three weeks, and it was the worst experience of my life. But everything else wasn't too bad. :)

There is only one doctor in my city who takes out wisdom teeth. Now that I've searched around a bit, I hear most people recommend going out of town, but I hadn't heard anything bad ahead of time.
I went to my dentist, my dentist told me they were ready to come out, and booked me an appointment for a consultation with this guy. Two months from then.
"I was just wondering, do they need to come out? My dentist recommended they do because of the pain, but after this wait they don't hurt anymore."
"This is my job. When I take out wisdom teeth I get paid. It's not my job to know if they have to be removed. Talk to your dentist."
That turned me off, but for the rest of our talk he seemed like a nice fellow. I called my dentist, my dentist said they did need to come out, so I booked an appointment for the surgery. Another two months away. In reality, that's not too bad of a wait in Canada, but it was pretty bad. When you know they need to come out immediately, and they have that kind of demand, he should be open for more than just Wednesday afternoons.
Anyways, then there was the issue of payment. It was pricey. From what I hear, it's a pricey procedure anywhere, though. The real problem with this was that he wanted $300 up front in cash. He told me it was for the guy who had to come from two hours away to do the anaesthetic. This sketched me out even more.
The day came, and all seemed to be good. He was nice, the nurses were nice, and the guy who apparently needed my $300 was nice. Then I woke up. Dizzy, woozy, just all around in a shitty place. I assumed it was just the drugs they'd given me. Apparently not. The nurse told me to stand up, and while I was drooling all over myself, I gave this a shot. I slid off the bed, and hit my face off the floor. The nurse picked me up, got me in a wheelchair, and stuck me in my car (my mother picked me up, no one was letting me drive obviously).
"He's a lot more out of it than most people, but I expect it to wear off in a few hours. Keep in touch with us, we want to make sure he gets better". The nurses were excellent, I never heard from the doctor again. Basically, by the time the anaesthetic wore off, everything except my mouth was in pain. I was bed-ridden for a week, subsisting off of milkshakes and soup. My doctor put me on T3's and some other painkiller. That part of it was awesome.
Even after I got out of bed things were hellish for me. It was the oddest thing. The nurses said they'd never seen anything like it. Not sure if I 100% believe them. Mind you, I could easily just be demonizing the man because of the way htings turned out.
Glad things went your way though.
