* I made this list over at GTPlanet (http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=101210) the other day in the interest of keeping myself busy. I don't know how many music fans there are around here, but hey, why not?*
====
In the interest of making lists as many of us do at the end of the year, does anyone care to share what they believe to be their best songs or albums from 2007? It has been a very, very long year with many great new artists, sophomore albums, and other compilation sets that have set the standard ever higher for 2008.
So, how 'bout it?
Best New Artist/Album
I'd honestly have to go with Paramore with their new CD RIOT!. Beyond the fact that they've got one of the hottest front-ladies in any music genre, their songs carry a bit of meaning, and always are fun in the process. Most Americans would probably be keen to vote for Amy Winehouse, but I'm over that (although, I still love her too).
Best Import
Yours Truly, Angry Mob by The Kaiser Chiefs has to be one of my favorite albums from this year, certainly a good follow-up to its predecessor. More than one song sticks out as something kick-ass in my book, and in all honesty, pretty much every playlist and CD I've made in the past few months since buying the CD has had one track from this album. Check it out if you haven't already, I've been really disappointed by the lack of play it has been getting in the US.
Best Album That No One Has Heard Of (in the US)
I'm a Klaxons fan, I'll admit it. The album Myths of the Near Future kicks ass! No play in the US guarantees that you'd look cool with your friends, as there are more than a few songs to jam on when playing this. I first heard about them at work, through an indie-rock playlist we use on our overhead. I had to search a bit for the CD, but my local Best Buy had it... Give it a look if you haven't...
Most Over-Rated Album
Yeah, I said it. I didn't like Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight... For the most part, I didn't like this one at all. That being said, I wasn't much of a LP fan going in anyway... Still, there are some stand-out songs, only one of which has gotten a lot of play. Well, not on the radio at least. I didn't care much for it, but a lot of other folks did, and thats alright by me. Depends on what you like...
Yeah, I Bought It: Why Not?
Metal doesn't get enough credit these days. Avenged Sevenfold's self-titled album changes that a bit, debuting at number four on its opening week. I love this album, I really honestly do. The best thing about it? Blasting it at work on the overhead just to piss the kids off a little more...
Why Haven't I Bought This Yet?
Say Anything's In Defense of the Genre. I'm working on it. I hear its really good. You kids should check it too...
Throw it in the Trash NOW!
High School Musical 2. Really, ANYTHING High School Musical... God I hate these things...
Best Album That No One Saw Coming
Metalocalypse is one of those shows that either really appeals to people or really drives them away. Personally speaking, I think its one of the funniest shows on television. The Dethalbum basically is all the songs from the show, plus a little bonus, in their full form. Amazingly, they don't suck, and actually are face-melting-metal all the way through.
Last-Minute Goodie
Anyone who has been around here long enough knows that I'm a fairly militant Killers fan. Sam's Town is still played nearly everywhere I go (although, The Black Parade steals its thunder), and that being said, I do feel like Sawdust is a pretty good spacer between it and their next "full album." By that I do mean that for the most part, Sawdust is compiled of tracks that didn't make it onto Hot Fuss or Sam's Town, and in fact have a few other bonuses as well. It isn't for everyone, but that wasn't the point either...
Best Album
I think out of all the CDs I bought this year, it really came down to one stand out record for me. Simply put, Paramore's RIOT! was something that seemed to come at just the right time and have just the right tone to make everything feel right again. I love the look, the sound, and the feel of the music. YOU MUST BUY THIS ALBUM IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY!
...So, heres to 2008!

Nice list. I just wanted to point out that Paramore has been around for about 2 years. "RIOT!" is their second album, so I don't think I would consider them for "Best New Artist". Probably "Breakout Band of '07" is more appropriate....

I'm not, and I LOVE it. Why? Stock options my good man, stock options. I hope they keep making those things forever....
So, rather than listing the better portion of albums I procured this past year, I'm only going to pick one: the one that got the most play time, that I kept coming back to. So, tada!

I have started listening to LCD Soudsystem's Sound of Silver. It's a pretty good one also. Based off of other people's lists, I'm trying Battles and The Field. I do not get what everyone likes about Burial's album. I guess I'm just not a dub-step guy.

I'm not gonna try and rape my brain and make a list of my own, but I'm glad someone agrees with me on this one. I totally dug their first two albums, but after hearing this one I think that it might have been my age. Hybrid Theory came out when I was in 4th grade and Meteora when I was in 6th...and now, still not a very experienced music listener but MUCH more so than I was back then, this new CD just seems really shitty. The funny thing is, I can still get in to their old stuff...perhaps it's just nostalgia.

Can somebody please explain the appeal of Burial’s Untrue to me? It’s not a bad album, but it seems so genre specific. I’ll try to explain this the best that I can. Some people post a lot of hip-hop on their year end favorites. I usually take it as “that person really likes that genre and listens to it a lot.” If the Burial album showed up on a list that had lots of electronic music, or specifically dub, or drum and base it would make sense to me. But this album is getting put in top 10 lists all over the place. If you need proof, just check out Metacritc’s 2007 lists or Pitchfork’s, or Yahoo’s. It also has a lot of really favorable reviews on iTunes. I’ve been trying to listen to this album for about a week now, and all I can think is “This would really appeal to someone who likes this genre.” The reason I say this is that all of the songs would sound really similar to someone who didn’t know anything about the genre. All of the beats are pretty similar and about the same tempo. The keyboards and sounds used sound pretty similar. The same vocal effects are used a lot also. To me it doesn’t have the appeal of Massive Attack or DJ Shadow, who I’ve read comparisons to.
I don’t want people to think I’m knocking the album. I think it’s good for what it is. It’s just that there are so many people who think it’s one of the best albums of the year, I feel like I’m missing something.

I think the popular appeal of Burial over other acts in the same "genre" (dubstep) is that it's content is much more emotionally charged. There is less emphasis on esoteric, repetitive basslines and more on harmony. This makes anything immediately more accessible outside the confines of it's genre. You're not seeing much dubstep on all-inclusive lists aside from Burial, no. Burial also has a very nostalgic feeling that heralds back to the original rave and pirate radio scene in England. I believe it cashes in on that, as well as having a similar style of vocal manipulation that was popularized by Todd Edwards and other 2-step and garage acts (that odd sort of vocal pitch shifting on Untrue, but not the debut) in Britain. Also, you may want to read some interviews with him. He has been an enigma for years. Not many know who he is, and there has been some wild speculation. He has a real presence to him, and he seems really 'legitimate', which is why you'll find some people arbitrarily adding Untrue to their lists. The other reason is that it's a wonderful album.
And yes, i'm primarily interested in electronic music, though I have no allegiance to any type of music at all.
in no particular order, browsing my itunes library here they are:
the go! team - proof of youth - surely it's not as good as thunder, lightning, strike! but it's still a wonderful album. a bit more hip hop this time around.
mika - life in cartoon motion - say what you want, but this is some spectacular pop music. i think i saw his video on mtv ONCE and vh1 twice, back in june.
rooney - calling the world - great indie pop rock. much better than their first album and that was still the album of 2003 for me.
the shins - wincing the night away - yes! MORE SHINS! that is all.
junior senior - hey hey my my yo yo - released in europe in '05, it was just finally released here this year, with a bonus ep! (i knew waiting would pay off, plus it didn't cost me $35 on amazon) again, a 3rd sophmore release on my list. i'm glad it's worked out this well.
well there it is, my top albums of 07, i'm sure i'm missing something.

For me, the raddest album and most disappointing album is the same one: Coheed and Cambria's No World for Tomorrow. I have to say it is my favorite of the year because no other album came close to being listened to as much by me. However, I was expecting a lot more from it. Up to this point, the sound of Coheed has evolved with every album, but this one has the same exact style as their last effort, From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness. I can forgive them for this, as all their albums are a part of a sci-fi story and this albums full name is Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV - Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow. Since it is the continuation of Burning Star IV, it makes sense that it is the same style as the last one. However, the story of the cd is lacking. All the sound effects and familiar motifs they'd throw at the beginning and end of tracks to add to the atmosphere are missing on this album, and the only thing driving the story is the music and lyrics. Also, with each album, they have built up the story with each album sounding more and more epic. Despite this being the finally of the sage, this album takes two steps back. Both Chapter 3 and the first volume of chapter 4 sound bigger and more exciting. The last song of the story also is nowhere near the scale that this saga deserved. But in the end, I still love all the songs so musically it is still raddest of 07.

They seem pretty good, but I've never really been able to get into them; the singer's voice is just a little too close to that guy from 3 Inches of Blood for my tastes...

I totally agree. I listened to the hell out of this album, but it didn't seem big enough to be the last chapter. Fear Through the Eyes of Madness did have that feel though, and that kind of brought this album down a notch. It might help if they clear up what happens at the end also.
I always thought Claudio sounded like Geddy Lee from Rush.

I absolutely love this album. You're right about it not getting radio play aside from "Back In Your Head" but to be fair its just not mainstream radio friendly. A lot of the songs are really catchy but they can't compete with the more mainstream stuff.
I'm sure the small indie stations (like indie 103.1 in los angeles) or even indie satellite radio channels will pick at least a second cut but it won't have enough to cross that line into the mainstream.
2007 was a great year for indie rock/pop IMO

Best Album That No One Has Heard Of (in the US)
I'm a Klaxons fan, I'll admit it. The album Myths of the Near Future kicks ass! No play in the US guarantees that you'd look cool with your friends, as there are more than a few songs to jam on when playing this. I first heard about them at work, through an indie-rock playlist we use on our overhead. I had to search a bit for the CD, but my local Best Buy had it... Give it a look if you haven't...
I got this just after it came out......in a Best Buy in Vermont of all places. I really wish I could find a new copy on vinyl though. It sold out before I even knew they made it available on vinyl :(
There are always a few records that tend to define my summer and this was one that totally brings back the summer of 2007.

One album I liked that I don't see on anybody's list (on this site or others) is Saul Williams's - The Inevitable Raise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust. Granted, the first track is probably the hardest one to listen to on the entire album, but there are so many good songs on this album, and you can get it for free, legally. Saul is trying something similar to what Radiohead did, but instead of just naming your own price, he only set two prices: free or $5. If you pay the money you get a higher quality MP3. Then the whole thing is produced by Trent Reznor, which can be seen as a good or a bad thing. I see it as a good thing. Some of my favorite tracks are Skin of a Drum, Raised to be Lowered, and WTF. If you've never listened to any Saul, check out his first albums also. It's great stuff that floats somewhere in rock, spoken word, hip-hop, and R&B.

The album I find myself pulling out the most is Tegan and Sara, The Con. I think it is some of their best work, but unfortunately only one track (and not the best track) will get any radio play.
I went through a faze of being addicted to that album this year, then I downloaded So Jealous and listened to that too. In my opinion The Con is the better album, though I've over-listened to it a bit and I think I need to give it a break. My Dad lives in Canada and I usually go there once a year if I can, so I usually see a fair bit of Canadian music on the TV channels over there. My favourite Canadian band, now on 'hiatus' is I Mother Earth, after they got rid of their first singer, Edwin. Just like Tegan & Sara, I think that I Mother Earth's music is suited to being listened to as an album, not a single.

slight off topic but, other mentions for RAD albums (not released last year, but made 2007 RAD for me):
I was going to put The Killers Sam's Town and My Chemical Romance The Black Parade on there... But those were soooo 2006. But personally speaking, there weren't many records that topped those for me recently...
