I saw The Orphanage when it came out this past weekend as a limited release. I'm sure it'll be in more cities over the next couple weeks. It has got to be one of my all time favorite fantasy/horror movies.

Guillermo Del Toro is listed as the producer and the movie is directed by first time director Juan Antonio Bayona. It centers around a woman who recently moves back to the Orphanage she lived in for a while as a child. Is the Orphanage haunted now? Is it all in her head? Whats up with her son?

This movie does everything right when it comes to putting you the viewer, in suspense. It was shot in such a beautiful way (with colors that really had a Pan's Labyrinth feel) and the gory scenes really make an impact.

I'd highly recommend this movie. I think Dan and Jeff would especially enjoy it.

I saw it last weekend, it was pretty good, especially the ending. It could have been creepier.

7.5/10

I'm really surprised that EVERYONE keeps bringing up Pan's Labyrinth, when talking about The Orphanage. It would seem the more obvious comparison would be The Devil's Backbone (directed by Del Toro), which was about a haunted orphanage. Then again, more people probably saw PL.

I still haven't seen The Orphanage, so the feel of it could very well be more like PL than DB.

Without getting into spoiler territory, there is a good reason for the comparison beyond Del Toro's association.

PL was beautifully done, very touching. Being the Bay Area, limited releases always seem to play here (SF, LA, and NYC), so may try to catch The Orphanage.

I have mixed feelings about PL. I did find it interesting and very well done, both production and visually. I feel that some of the blame was due to when it was described to me, which was "an f'd up alice in wonderland." I do see some similarities in the two stories, but not enough to call it that.

I am excited to see the Orphanage, although I am afraid that i might have to wait till a DVD release.
