How long have you been in the States?Pretty much 9 years to the day.
So much for "Why don't we move to the US so I can get my PhD then move home?" that my girlfriend (now wife) said one cold winters day in Melbourne :)
The Dromettes will be happy to know that my accent is still Australian - more Hugh Jackman than Steve Irwin, but 100% Australian none the less (and even stronger with the addition of alcohol).

I'm a carlton draught person if I'm broke, Becks, if I have a bit of cash, or anything off the taps in the Belgian Beer Cafe. Duvel is pretty sweet.
I'm in the opinion that the local brew gets the job done, but it ain't special. Moshi_what is a beer expert though. Clarify please :)
Any eastern european geeks? Actually if memory serves me right, all the things that's geeky here, is considered cool there. Jay and Silent Bob are popular in Hungary! If you can afford it, it's very cool to have a videogame console. I know the kids were wowed by my 16bit sega (Megadrive for me genesis to you), especially as in 1993 the comodore 64 and maybe a NES if you were lucky was as good as you'll get. We actually are quite good with import beer here. The Belgian Beer Cafe and the Lowenbrau restaurant have a great selection of european beer, and some bottle shops like Kemeny's in Bondi have a massive selection of import Alcohol. I know I've found many obscure Hungarian stuff at Kemeny's (Well it's ran by hungarian immigrants), but they have a big Scandinavian, German, Benelux, and mediteranian section too.

Little Creatures is from Western Australia and I heard that if you ever go to WA head over to their brewery, its the best experience. Matilda Beer Company is also in West. Aust. They have such brews as Beez Neez, Bohemian, Roof Top, Creme (Coffee flavoured beer) etc. Blue Tongue is a big Aussie craft beer, never tried it but. And James Squires is the biggest Aussie Craft beer, along with Coopers. We have man smaller breweries that a worth trying, but now sure what aussie stuff you guys can get in the State. At least you should get Squires. I'd love to try Boston Larger, heard its mad.
If anyone can be bothered, go to the photowhoring thread, check page 43, the first photo of sloppybunny. In the foreground is two aussie beers. The green label one is Coopers (Pale Ale) and the other is James Boags a larger.
I can yak on forever about beer. So I will stop right now. Bunny calls me an alcoholic for drinking so much beer..(I don't). I'm a rare female beer enthusiast which makes good company when I'm working in the bar or having a drink with.;)

Fosters Lager (blue can) is pretty common, available everywhere - but it is brewed by Molson's out of Canadia. I guess importing it into the US from Canada makes it an export? eh?
Fosters Special Bitter (greenish can) is easy enough to find, but limited quantity (only available in the big 40oz can).
Coopers is available in a lot of specialty import stores like CostPlus WorldMarket (where they also have Bundaberg Ginger Beer .. YAY!!!!), and specialty wine/alcohol places like "Total Wines" or "Beverages and More". I have seen more than just the Cooper Pale Ale in the stores, but the Pale Ale is most common.
Despite drinking more than my fair share of VB, I also drank of lot of Hahn Ice, and Carlton Cold, and loved Redback.
As I like to say - American beer is like having sex in a canoe ... it's ****ing close to water. BUT, they do have some decent microbrews over here - you just need to avoid the companies that sponsor Nascar.
If in the US, visit "The Yardhouse" (its a chain) where they have beer on tap from all around the USA and world (its great :) ).

http://gk007a0336.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/white.jpg
It was only £2.57 for 3 litres and at 7.5% your in for a pretty crazy night. Only downside is you may wake up on a bench in the town centre at 10am on a weekday morning with lots of elderly people looking at you disapprovingly. Oh and it tasted like cats pee.
Nowadays I rarely drink but when I do it's a swedish pear cider they have in my local.

Get out!
Actually I'm more of a spirits drinker too. If I'm with Australians the peer pressure gets to me and I'll drink beer, but I'm usually a vodka or whisky drinker with the Hungarians. A cheap alternative if we are super broke in need to be socially obnoxiuos and dangerous, we drink cheap casket redwine with coke!
I had Bud when I was in America, I've had tap water with more flavour before.
I'm in favour of the lady genitelia myself, but damn you're spot on with the girly vodka drinks! It's like getting drunk on sprite! :D Smirnoff Black is strong enough to be almost manly.

Whats wrong with being a lightweight. It just means I get way more drunk for a fraction of the cost. I only started drinking this summer but I have to say that I agree with you on the coolers. I mostly stick to whiskey of the Canadian variety and the only beer I drink tends to be very cheep (LAKER) so naturally it tastes horrible but if i down 3 or 4 I'm well on my way to a happy place.

I'd kill for a Hahn or Coldie ... but as of now, I am sucking back a Don de Dieu ... a Canadian brew local to Quebec (where I am staying at the moment). Halfway throug the 750ml bottle of 9% alcohol heaven in a bottle ... and feeling a mild buzz kick in on an empty stomache.

I "hate" those fizzy chick drinks. They are such a waste of money! I may as well buy a soft drink. No offence, if I see a guy drink that stuff, I know I'm not going near him...lightweight! Hehehe...:D
I hardly drink at all but when I do I stay away from beer mostly because I have never liked the taste. Soft Drink tastes great so if I can get a buzz on it too I'm all for that. :) And Strangely enough I'm not a lightweight, you would think I would be considering how little I drink but when I drink as much as my friends I always sober up quicker. :D

I want you to know... I love each and every one of you and your accents :o
I work with a cute geek who moved to the US from Canada July 5th. He moved to Canada when he was 16. From Russia. Nick's awesome and I really enjoy spending time with him. And he's got a killer, very interesting accent.
My mom's boyfriend, George, is from Greece, and his accent is so damned heavy that I STILL have trouble understanding him at time, but I love him to the moon and back.
*sigh* Accents are indeed love-worthy....

you haven't done tech support for a company with MANY employees from India... it is sooo hard to understand them most of the time!
Indian accents are as easy as English to me at this point. And just as plain.

Pretty much 9 years to the day.
Marry me!!

Hello. My name is Johan, and I am a foreign geek.
I live in Stockholm, the wonderful capital of Sweden.
Sweden, the land of Dolph Lundgren, Abba, Peter Stormare and Ingemar Bergman.
And if you ever feel the need to read my posts in an accent, this is the one to use and not the Swedish Chef one.

I know that no one down under acctually drinks Fosters. However it is always an easy way to get an Aussie worked up.

My middle name is Johann. I was born in Austria and my parents gave me what seemed like a german middle name. My name in Hungarian is Sandor, and they allways tried to call me that in Hungary, but I stuck to my guns and they eventually called me Alex :)
