Complete gaming nOOb here with broadband finally looking to dip my toe into gaming again. Before I go and buy WoW (I'm a cheap bastard with a family to feed), was looking into getting into a free one. Nothing special, just something more fun that trolling for cybersex in IRC chat rooms.
Thanks.

Guild Wars isn't free-free, but it's the only one out there that, after you pay for the software, doesn't charge you a monthly subscription.
It's a nice one to have on the machine for when you're suddenly broke and have to ditch all your subscriptions, because you can still play it.

it's pretty much my job. No recommendations for a MMORPG from the great Sarah? Fine, back into the IRC rooms then.

cool. Will have to check it out. If I can only spend say 5-6 hours a week instead of a day will I still have fun or always be a newbie character?

If you are looking for a normal MMORPG, try out Silk Road (sorry, too busy to find link, google is your friend). Its Korean heavy, not in language but in players, but its a decent little mmo. If you want something different, try out Puzzle Pirates. In this, you and your crew play puzzles (different puzzles for different stations) to control your ship and pillage islands.

I think I managed my first few levels in a single afternoon. Of course, the higher you go the longer it takes.
Whether you have fun will depend on what friends you make, if any... I tend to play my MMORPGs solo a lot, myself, because the friends I make usually can't put as much time as I do into it, so I have to play alone.
If you're asking if it's fun to play alone, sure it is. If you're asking if you'll be frustrated because you can't keep up with other people... can't tell ya. :D

theres this game i used to play alot called MapleStory, i dotn think it really a MMORPG but its fun and dookey and free
i play Planetside sometimes. it's a massively multiplayer first person shooter. think of it like an RTS that spans about a dozen planets, each with multiple continents, each of those continents with a dozen huge bases, each of them fought over sometimes for hours by hundreds of people on each side. and it never stops. there's always a battle going on, and the best part, the game doesn't require you to give up your life. there's no 'grind.'
anyway i would fill the page explaining it, which i don't really want to do. but if you're interested, go to http://www.planetside.com. it's free until your character is 'rank 6'. but you can be fully functional and have fun without the subscription, i've never upgraded and don't intend to. you just don't need it, you can play casually. have fun dood.

I too was in that same cheapskate position a few months ago and after raping and pillaging my way through a plethora of free MMORPGs, SilkRoad (http://www.silkroadonline.net)and Fly For Fun (http://flyff.gpotato.com/) seemed to be the best of the litter.
