One follow up note:

We are experiencing some issues on user logins on the new site and the forums - it may ask you to relogin in here and there, we're aware of the issue and are working on it. Keep checking here for updates and please be patient.

thanks.

Okay, so who's responsible for the show images - they are massive, take an age to download, and are then "resized" to smaller images... Why not just smaller in the first place?

Site's lookin nice though :)

I'm having a problem watching shows via my Browser in Full Screen, audio gets slightly choppy, video too I think. Regular viewing is fine and I don't think its my PC as other sites don't have a problem with Full Screen.

Firefox 2.0.0.11
Flash 9.0.115.0

We think we've finally got the main site/forum login problems resolved (as of about two minutes ago), so if you're still seeing issues, please clear cookies and try again.

I'm often getting a wrong password error when trying to login to the main site. However it seems that the problem disappears if I log into the forums, and then log in to the main site afterwards.

And, yes I have cleared my cookies.

Is it possible I'm missing how to bring up a list of recently released shows? I liked the simplicity of the old site in that I could pull it up and quickly see what shows were released for the day.

We're working on a "latest episodes" listing for the homepage, so stay tuned on that.

Why would you release a new website design without have a most recent release show list (I know it’s in the process of being introduced)? Also the front page doesn’t seem to be loading right with adblock running. The new site does look "stunning", but I'll take function over looks any day.

Unblock any Ads, I did.. seeing as I'm not paying anymore. It also might resolve some Layout problems.

Looks pretty awesome! It definitely needs a current releases panel, though. I also agree with the huge images being resized for thumbnails, it makes the pages load slowly.

I did notice a few rendering problems in IE7 and Opera 9.5b:

Also, the tabs render incorrectly for some pages in all the browsers:

I get an error page every other time I click a link. I was having difficulty just getting to this thread to post. I hope this problem gets fixed soon.

Also, you guys need an "All Shows" link like you did with the old site. I don't want to visit the pages of every single show just to see if a new episode is available.

I agree with function over "stunning" but broken. Every time I comes to see something the site goes down for maintenance. I'm glad your making a latest episodes list like it used to have that was very useful and fast.

When you pull up an individual episode's page (eg, this one (http://revision3.com/diggnation/2008-01-17acidburn/)), just to the right of the flash player, below the embed url and below the send to a friend link it says "Download this episode."

Click that, and you have links to the actual files.

I second many of the others in this thread. It's nice that you guys worked as hard as you did to get a new site up and running, but it is currently all flash and no substance. I'm glad to hear that we will be getting a latest episode section to the site, as that is sorely needed. Making it a bit more obvious where the download section is for the shows would be nice too (that section shouldn't default to collapsed). I'm also glad to hear that you guys are working on fixing the login problems. As of this post, I was able to log into the main site (though it required re-registering), yet I still can't post in the comments section for the Rev3 blogs (it doesn't think I am logged in, nor will it let me login from there).

Also, in the user accounts, it won't allow me to access my e-mail (to change it back to the old e-mail), or change my password. All it does is leave me on the "personal info" page. It won't go anywhere else.

In regards to the colour scheme, please change it back. I despise the whole black on white "stare into a light bulb" look that the site currently has going for it. The Rev3 site was much easier on the eyes when it was black (grey-black) and green.

Finally, as others mentioned, the site is currently bloated and running at a snail's pace.

Not to knock the web-development team too much. I know you guys have to make sure that this site can take a repeated beating by the growing viewership. Here's hoping it gets streamlined in the next few days.

I let out a huge sigh when I went to the site today and saw the overhaul. Honestly, it's a step backwards. Overengineered, way WAY too slow, and it completely ignores how fricking simple it was to use the old site. I feel lost and distracted on the new site, mad at waiting for load times and disappointed that I no longer fell like I know the place inside and out and can whip around to what I want immediately.

The impact of this new site is that I will probably skip coming here now and just go to iTunes to get the shows. I mildly dislike the iTunes interface, but in one step you managed to not only get as bad as iTunes, but get worse.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE press the UNDO button QUICK!!!!!!!

Many of my thoughts have been covered elsewhere but I'll summarise...

Navigation is horrible, too many clicks to download an episode. I had no idea which if any shows had new episodes out.

It's clunky, crowded and messy, the design is overwhelming (particularly the front page) and the menus get lost in all the bright flashy stuff on the rest of the page.

The 1/2/3/4 thing doesn't show any images for me. Trying to see if it's AdBlock causing it and the site's dog slow. (Ah, it finally loaded. It was AdBlock, the images show up with it turned off.)

I hate the yellow panels at the bottom of the homepage, especially with the square ad to the right of them. The Web 2.0 rounded corners don't work with the sharp, squared-off ads. Looking at it, I think that yellow just seems wrong with the green and blueish grey.

Looking yet again, the 2 rounded yellow panels and the square ad below the top rounded panel with your account info/menus/etc just looks completely wrong. It doesn't fit there. Also the slice of green shades on the left of the top panel looks completely out of place, I thought it was a design glitch when I first saw it, horrible.

The black menus I like, though. Clean, simple, stylish and tasteful. On the downside though, having used the old design for so long, finding the episode or show you want on this new site just seems like so much effort. Much preferred the old style *click* *click* *done*.

...and what's with that patch of blue/greyish "wallpaper" on the top left of each that fades out in to plain colour? :/

The show pages seem very subscription-centric, which sucks for me because I download everything manually according to whether it sounds worth watching or not. Not a huge thing, but still a little irritating.

I also don't think "People who like this also like..." needs to be expanded when the options for download aren't.

Every page on the site looks... a mess. It's busy, it's hard to see where you're supposed to click at first glance (which, as we all know, is what counts). It's like you all couldn't decide who's idea to go with so to save hurting anyone's feelings you went with them all.

In a word (or six and a little punctuation), it's hard to use and fugly.

Love the new look, but I needed to drop in a say I had a terribly hard time trying to figure out how to simply download the new edition of Diggnation. Maybe it's just the new layout, but at least I used to be able to click 2 times and have the episode downloading.

It looks great and I'm sure I'll love it in the future... but keep on it guys! As a member I would prefer these issues had been tested(if that's even possible) before completely rolling out the new site, but you know we're all(for the most part) understanding. :)

Its definetly a step in the right direction, the last website was a let-down considering to the shows you have.

but the response time for me in the UK is awful. It was never like this on the old system.

(Id thought you would have designed a simple version of the site, for those who liked the old one. As a PHP CMS coder I always code 2, great for seo.)

esalonia
01-19-2008, 04:13 AM
I like the new site, but with one HUGE exception. I find it incredibly difficult to find out what, if any, are the latest released shows on any given day. I think it would be extremely helpful if there were a section on the front page of "Current releases". Without this, I would have to check each shows respective page to see if there has been a new show released. (Previously on the old site, you could easily see this on the front page.)

Yes, i can go click on the show schedule and say ok, show X was released today, let me go to that page, and then select that episode, and then select download. PITA...

Yes I am aware of the "subscribe" link that will essentially do this work for me; however, I don't like using other programs to do this. I am more comfortable manually downloading the shows I want to watch...

Am I the only one who finds this to be an annoyance?

Again, I know with this new site, like anything else, there will be things people like, and things they don't. All I am asking for is this to be considered (provided enough people want it). It would seem to me as something rather trivial to implement.

Thanks for listening.

Keep up the good work rev3 staff.

I think most people on here will complain as they are just frightened of change, and too scared to try something different from what they know.

The new site looks a lot more professional, which is what REV 3 needs to step into the next phase of its life. But I agree, a new releases in chronological order pane is much needed.

Great work guys!!!

I really like the new site. I like the fact that the mini player is bigger, which means I don't need goggles to watch the shows if I'm chatting with someone online. I like the idea that the release schedule for the day is on the front page as well. Keep up the good work!!!

Yeah, I realize now that we should have had the "latest released shows" module, instead of the "upcoming shows" module. What was I thinking?

So let me apologize to everyone, and know that we're going to fix that ASAP.

Also, we're working hard to improve the performance. It's not great either.

Keep the comments coming, we want to make it a great experience for everyone. Thanks for sticking with us.

And sorry again for the lack of the "upcoming"... I feel terrible that we missed *that*.

why dont you put lastest shows, in a bubble box (like Revision blogs) i the space at the right of the revision blogs bubble.

^^just an idea, apart from that the new site great.

My main issue is/was the lack of recent episodes...but I know that's being worked on.

It would be nice if there was a setting, or cookies remembered, how I prefer the menus...when I go to a show page, it's to download, so it's irritating that of the four options only Download Episode is closed. (Personally, I'd rather that one open and the other three closed, since I'll never use them...and never liked when sites listed forum blips outside of the forum.)

Otherwise, it's not too bad...the site actually works better with my settings this way.

Can I make a suggestion regarding your adserver. It appears you use openads - not the quickest at serving ad's, but a great piece of software (I use it myself).

To speed page loading times up, stick adverts in Iframes within open ad's (using the iframe invocation code), this allows the rest of the site to load "around" the advert, while the advert can load in it's own time.

I had this problem on a few sites, and after doing things this way, the difference in page load times can be quite impressive :)

Dunno if this is the place to post this, but it doesn't seem very possible to switch in some modes in the "Account" page of the website. When you get there, you are on "Personal Info", but you can't change to "Change Password" nor the other one. The page simply refreshes to "Personal Info" again. Am I the only one?

...ok, I don't know who handles the 'thumbs' files on bitgravity, but I just got the full effect of full size images used for thumbnails. Am I supposed to just not access the site at all when I'm on dialup?

(For instance, the Diggnation page has 7 images...the most recent three are all 1280x720...between 400k-500k each. The older four are all 320x240 though. Interestingly enough, the size change corresponds to the calendar change.)

At least for now, I have images from bitgravity blocked.

Wordpress has the option to allow users to change themes since it's all based on CSS, correct? I may be mistaken, but that could be a good step if it's possible. With at least different color variations, or perhaps different themes based on someones favorite show?

Of course, this would make it more bloated, but it would cut down on some of the bitching in some areas.

Someone might of already mentioned this as I haven't bothered to read this whole thread. The displayed thumbnail pictures for the shows and each episode are way too huge. They are just resized on the site instead of being smaller images. This means it takes longer to load them and it’s a huge waist of bandwidth. Doing this also distorts the image as it's displayed.

For example if you go to a shows page you download an image like this:
http://bitcast-a.bitgravity.com/revision3/thumbs/diggnation--0132--2008-01-10spinney--thumb.jpg
But it displays as a tiny thumbnail.

I like the look. The eye candy is nice. It seems that I can find just about everything I need on the homepage, or at least know where to go to get what I want. The pull down menus work fine. I am very impressed with the rss feed menu for each show, my preferred method of watching shows.

I have a couple reservations.

1)The new page has a fixed width. I don't have the best eyesight and I use a resolution that makes me need to scroll left and right to see the page. I miss the day when the user got to choose the width of the browser.

2)I am not sure where I saw this; to sum it up:

"Not everyone uses [Microsoft Internet Explorer], is 20 [years old] and has 20/20 vision. Visitors may be color blind, blind, dyslexic, epileptic, have cognitive problems, poor reading skills, poor concentration. They may use IE, Firefox, Opera, Kongueror, Safari... screen readers, text browsers, cell phones, webTV, PDAs or even portable game pads and, in the not so far future, their refrigerator to order food online. Accessibility should be a must."

3)Good thing it is slow, I now have a chance to take a leak.

4)I am not turning off Adblock.

Overall the new look is an improvement. Don't worry about finding the holy grail. It doesn't exist. Take everything with a grain of salt. Keep the site as easily maintainable as possible. I would hate for the quality of the content suffer as a result of the effort needed to keep up with a new look. Same goes for the shows. High quality content is more important than high quality video.

Well, the new site has officially hit a new low in my book... It took me 15 minutes to get to the link for the new Tekzilla episode and don't ignore the fact that I'm getting it today because I didn't even know there was a new episode out, and no I don't have the release schedule memorized. So, why did it take so long? Because this site is slow as hell and shitty to navigate. Seriously, someone should hate themselves for thinking this was a good site design. And I could ignore some of the slowness, but it's not like it was launched yesterday. These issues should have been fixed by now or at least give us a response saying you are working on it! It's really pissing me off that I can't get to the good content I want because of the site.

bagelsaurusrex

Has anyone else noticed that the feeds seem to be having problems, too? My Tekzilla feed keeps displaying a gray exclamation point, and my TRS feed won't update at all.

I know the website slowing down has already been mentioned, but I really do like the new website format! It looks a lot more professional than before, and I'm sure they'll work out the kinks soon.

crowe-z3r0
01-23-2008, 01:43 AM
I have not been a member of these forums for very long. I don't think I ever posted anything here before. But I have to say that the new site, well pretty much sucks.

Really, if you guys worked hard on the website, then wouldn't you want the site to be easily accessible? What about the few people who still only have dial-up? If it's taking long for us with DSL or faster, then what about those people? Of course, they have to stream each show but Rev3 streaming seems to be faster than any other site I've been to.

The biggest problem I have is the fact that there is no latest show releases on the front page. I would settle if they created a temporarily page with just the latest shows until they put them on the front. Honestly, if you did make a page that is just for latest shows, then it would probably start to get more hits than the front page. And if that happens, you know something is wrong.

I think you should take the new page down, and replace it with the old one until everything can be fixed. But of course, I'm not a web designer so your probably not going to take my advice.

Bottom line for all your nik-picky people is that it's better than it was. This design allows for better expansion of the show list. It probably is built around a stronger content management system.

The old site was a pain to navigate. Getting to the show was easy but then you had to hunt for other links. It just wasn't clear. The new show pages are nice to look at and it's finally easy to get everything you need.

I'm not suggesting that there are no real problems but are some of the complaints simply people bitching because they don't like change.

I'd agree it's easier now to get to OLD episodes... since harder to get to recently released ones, unless you know the actual release schedule for the show you want.

I thought Kevin and Alex both used Fire Fox, but the new site doesn’t work well with it. Why would you change the great easy to navigate site you had to this new thing that is not standards compliant and no were near as friendly an interface. This new design is a HUGE step backwards for revision 3.

Y'know, it's all very well having a thread for feedback but in order for it to work everyone has to accept (even if they don't agree) others opinions. "You just don't like change" and "you're wrong, it's great" don't cut it.

This thing is going to mean different things to different people, steamrolling over what someone else says because you actually quite (dis)like the site isn't what feedback is about.

I am shocked with the management, when this design was shown to them.

Why does Rev3 homepage have more views than others?
Answer: because its the Diggers TV GUIDE!

So management, ignore statistics, ignore what has worked well, ignore that diggers like simplicity.

I am just shocked with the ignorance, of not providing the old version on a subdomian for the "haters".
I am MORE SHOCKED that a latest videos page does not exist !!
How can that miss the requirements of the website?

It would have taken me a few hours MAX to code such page in PHP. Yet the team that has developed the website work very slow, inaccurate and are NOT customer focused.

For the record I can accept change, but only when its for the better. Rev3's new site may look nicer but its too slow, and there is no latest show release section on the front page or even a separate page for itself.

The only other major podcast network that I can think of is the TWIT Netcast Network, and on their front page they show the latest show released and then right next to it, the latest shows that have been released.

All Rev3 needs to do is have the site load faster, most people are saying its the ads and the pictures, and to have somewhere a latest show releases section on the front page. Its really hard to know when a new episode comes out if you don't memorize the calendar or check out each of the show's page.

I guess thats enough for now. My 2 cents. Again.

Sure that's the first thing people think of when they see the new frontpage.

The old site was a pain to navigate. Getting to the show was easy but then you had to hunt for other links. It just wasn't clear. The new show pages are nice to look at and it's finally easy to get everything you need.

The old site was never a pain to navigate, unlike the new site which requires more clicks to do the same thing. That might be good for ad revenue, but that doesn't make it easier to navigate.

I'm not suggesting that there are no real problems but are some of the complaints simply people bitching because they don't like change.

No, it is not about not liking change. Change is fine when it's in a good direction. For example the individual show pages are much nicer then the old site. More complicated to navigate and use, but look prettier. My complaints are mostly about the front page. Even now that the "recent list" has been added, it still looks bad and first impressions are everything.

Edit: Refreshing the page fixed the vertical placement of the "Recent List". Frontpage does indeed look better, but there is room for some cosmetic improvement like horizontal dividing lines and the already existing vertical ones made a tad longer.

I was just thinking they should make the latest releases list customizable. i don't think i care to see tekzilla daily on there. tekzilla sure, but not the daily, but that's just me personally. i'm sure there are shows out there that don't interest others and this would be a way to customize.

The new bottom half of the main page is much better with the latest releases and no more of the content "bubbles" ... now one continuous page. Much nicer looking.

The redesign looks great. A joy to browse through really, and thanks for the individual Tekzilla and Tekzilla Daily feeds.

Well Tekzilla Daily is still in the main feed. I think that's a bit weird, since they now have a separate Daily feed.

Nice to see the thumbnails are actually small images now and not just being rescaled with html. The chronologically ordered episode list is good but it could do with some more information, like the release date next to each episode.

Probably already been mentioned, and I do apologise for that, but when are you going to get rid of horrible gray text of the messages ? Even the green text that I am now seeing as I type would be a definate improvement.

Love the layout, but sadly enough, the rounded edges and black/green/white color scheme is similar (yet different) to a design I've been working on for a while on and off, and of course its nothing that even cuts close!

The blog part is non-functioning cause I only uploaded it cause a friend wanted to see it.

Its not even near done, and yes, I hate IE, so you can not view the site in IE (well, I guess you could if you disabled Javascript, but then I'm not so sure how it looks.)

PM me feedback?

(And I have to help a friend. She hand-codes websites for business. She does a really good job at what she does. Her portfolio is small right now, but if you need something done, she's the one to help you. [[edited out URL]] She does print work, and will also make updates to your site for you! PSS: She doesn't hate IE like me, so her work wont block out IE)

The Rev3 homepage is still showing show descriptions that are cut off at the bottom. Two at the present time. This site bug is happening with Firefox v2.0.0.11 and IE6. Dates and episode information should continue to be included in the "More New Releases" section. There still needs to be better vertical separators and additional horizontal separators on the homepage.

this new design is a step backwards in my opinion. The old site was cleaner and more intuitive. This new one is too cluttered with excess crap. Change it back.

The current homepage is better then the first iteration, but at the end of the day the old homepage was better. It contained more information and navigation was by far easier.

Someone earlier predicted that after awhile the new site's problems would persist and never get fixed. The way it seems right now, we are starting to see the beginning of that prediction come true.

I was looking for the episode where Jim was reviewing the gutter cleaner and couldn't remember initially which one of your shows it was on. I wanted to do a general search of your site but low and behold....there are no options to do general mass searches of your entire site. I assume that will be coming....???

thanks

can we get rid of the link at the top that has a miniversion of your avatar with a yellow border and your username in border? it surves the exact purpose as Account. So if possible get rid of either or but if you do decided to keep the mini Avatar and username please shorten or get rid of the border's pixel width of the image. and also, the advertisement at the top of the website is really really annoying.
