In the wake of the Dexter review, a harsh but honest review, I'd like to draw everyone's attention to the fairly new anime Death Note, it only recently started showing in Canada and the USA.
It blows my mind how awesome it is. It has a similar premise to Dexter, serial killer killing criminals though it is less of super-hero story. Also the obvious difference of supernatural elements.
Everyone that is not adverse to anime needs to check it out.

"Fairly new"? Kinda old actually. There are probably a few threads (at least one) on it already. It is an awesome anime. Saw the entire series but haven't seen the movie (live action) yet.

I very much love this show. The whole series hasn't aired on CN yet, but I think it's getting close to being over. It's such a smart show and the characters, while unbelievable, are very interesting. I didn't know there was a live action movie, but I wouldn't expect it to be any good.

I actually have the live action movie. I found it at the famous Pacific Mall. Well, maybe only people who live in the Toronto/Markham area will know it. But Russell Peters did mention it in one of his sketches. Anyways, I haven't watched it yet because I forgot about it until now. :p
I suggest watching Toppa Tengan Gurren Lagann if you're a fan of anime. Totally epic robot anime which goes way way WAY over the top. The whole series is based on, when you think it couldn't get any crazier, it does.

...when the show premiered on [adult swim] I didn't have cable. When I got my service back the show was already on something like episode 10. I suppose I could download what I've missed but I'm too lazy.

1. Yes, Death Note is awesome
2. If you're serious about watching it, watch it in original Japanese with subs.

3. Haha, Pacific Mall is great. Never seen so much bootleg stuff in my life!
4. Gurren Lagann is really crazy, there are robots as big as a battleship, then a planet, then... well i won't spoil it for people who want to check it out.

Personaly I watched the entire series with english subs and for the record NO this series is no where near close to over. I wont ruin it for you but I will say this; Pay attention to the rules of the Death Note, the come into play very soon.
This series has alot of twists and turns in it and its sometimes tough to keep up with stuff. But honestly its been around forever and yes i think its alot better than Dexter because sadly much like Jeff I saw the season 1 ending coming a mile off.....as well as Season 2 :(.

I am a fan of the Death Note anime. However, the best of the series is 1-26, the second story arc is not nearly as good as the first. Near is not nearly the interesting character and opponent that L was.
While I generally prefer subtitled anime, the dub of Death Note is really well done. I actually prefer the english Misa to the japanese Misa.
The live action movies are very good, especially the second one. It departs from the anime plot and the ending is superb.

Death Note is pretty freaking awsome.
Nothing else much to say.

I thought they did very well with the anime, though the ending was slightly different from the ending of the manga. I think the manga is better only because of that, though i wouldn't mind watching the anime again.
And yes, watch it with subs and original audio.

Okay, I'll bite. Anyone know of a good place or places to get a hold of the episodes?

No Boobies for lavahot.
:(
I absolutely loved this show for about the first 15-17 episodes.
SPOILER::::
After the original "L" died I kind of got a bit sick of it. The story wasn't as subversive and the plot twists became more and more predictable.
But still, I'd rate it as one of the top animes I have watched.

You can pretty much stream all the videos on stage6... No links, no harm done.
This series is pretty damn rad. I really fell out of the anime phase for about 3-4 years and I picked this up a few months ago. I was addicted by the first episode... I think I watched the whole first arc in 3 days.
I have to agree that the second arc is not so good... The blond dude is a fruit...

I saw the whole series subbed through a torrent and now I'm watching it on YTV Canada and they are only about 1/4 of the way into the series.
The dub is quite good.
I do agree in a sense that the second arc isnt as good, but some damn interesting stuff still happens in it. Wont spoil anything but just the whole context of it is pretty interesting I thought.

Thank you for posting this. I am also one that recommended Dexter. Not everyone likes the same things.
Death Note is another one of my gems. The anima is so amazing i just love it. I hope it makes subject of topic. I'm not sure it will make topic on trs because its not very general public friendly(its for a very targeted but elite audience i would say).
Did i say i loved this work of masterpiece to death?????

i don't know about that. Death Note was fairly popular even before the anime. The manga got a lot of people, even non-manga readers into the story. I think they should mention some anime or manga on the show. They seem to ignore it as to pay more attention to american comics (blegh!) and Avatar.
I think they should check Death Note out.

I agree, they should check out Death Note, if not as a segment on the show, at least check it out personally.

I just watched the first live action Death note film tonight (at this point i've only seen the 2 discs of the anime that have been released in english). What an AWESOME movie. It follows the general plot of the 2 discs that have been released in english but changes some stuff around. I'm working on getting the 2nd live action movie that they made. I highly suggest that you get a copy of this video and watch it!

While the live action was ok, i think it changed a bit too much from the anime/manga. If you really want the full Death Note experience go pick up the manga or go get the subbed versions of the anime.
