I've been playing CoD4 for a few months now (PS3) and am not enjoying myself lately.

It's not that occasionally I'll end up with a 14 year old idiot blaring music and talking about high school, that's fine.

It's that I'm not a *HARDCORE* CoD4 player, and apparently, everyone else is. Now, like I said, I've played for a few months, problem being I have other interests, Unreal Tournament 3, Resistance Fall of Man, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, and the odd PS2 game were played also.

Is it at all possible for a match making system to be more than just a way to match me with 3 clans who exclusively play the CoD4? I want to enjoy online play and have some fun with friends, but I routinely end up bored because I can't move without getting flanked or stabbed or grenaded by someone who knows the maps well enough to throw a grenade halfway across the level.

I know I'm not king shit at the game but, I'm also a bit more competent. I can hold my own in UT3. What gives with CoD4?

The thing is, I just can't stop playing CoD4. other online mp games just don't do it for me anymore.

however, I feel that just knowing the maps a little bit and using the right weapons really do make a difference. M16 or P90 are usually good choices. Lots of people use those weapons and it really makes it hard to not use them because they really are like 1 to two trigger pull kills with stopping power. But sometimes you just have a frustrating streak. I have them occasionally where I can't play worth a damn for like a week. But then you get back into things and it's great.

Well 2 things.

The PS3 online is pretty bad compared to Live or PC online.

Another thing is that CoD4 multiplayer is the exact opposite of Unreal Tournament or Resistance. It's not about twitch shooting, or getting the strong weapons. It's all about spotting your opponent before he spots you, and taking them out as quickly as possible. It's more strategic than a lot of fragfests.

Maybe you're just not a CoD4 player. I personally hate UT3, it's too fast-paced and twitch-based. CoD4 requires a lot more thought about how to play. Running wildly around and shooting will get you killed real quick in it, while in UT3 it's perfectly fine. Personally CoD4 is my bag... baby.

I've had COD4 for less than a week. I bought it for PS3 and every time i get an invite to someone's lobby the game trys to establish a connection and than give me the same error over and over agian. Unable to connect to host. Has anyone else had this problem. Am i doing something wrong? Is it a PS3 issue?

I have a descent connection and am able to join other game easily but i cant join my friends. What gives?

I went thru the same shit when i started playing Counter Strike. It really is about knowing you maps. I just got COD4 and i really suck at it. Its mainly becasue im used to KB & Mouse but a huge part is just knowing the maps. It will take a lot of time and frustration. But eventually you will get that Eureka moment of being able to hold your own. I am just now starting to get there myself. So far i have only had one match where i have made it as the top player but that doesnt mean i didn't die A LOT. I just had a lot of kills. Its kinda like learning to play the guitar. Practice, Practice, Practice.

And yeah it is annoying to be called a noob or a fag by some 13 year old who is owning you but you just gotta brush it off.

COD4 seems like it will be well worth the time you invest in it to learn. And unlike UT3 or Resistance there is a somewhat substantial learning curve.

It just happens at random, they'll probably fix it in time if it's something wrong on their side. For some reason my friend can't connect to me, but I can to him. Either it's just random or maybe it has something to do with our different connections or something.

I don't care about the dumb teens calling me a noob. I guess I meant more that I'd prefer a better matching system. Like in Yahoo! games, where like skill levels are matched. I can accept I suck, but, please IW, stop matching me with people who eat, sleep and breathe CoD4. I'm just looking for fun.

Have you tried checking your NAT type? NAT Type 3 will make it harder to connect to other players.

I've had similar issues, but I've put in less than an hour of online play, so I expect it I suppose. I've leveled up to 5 now, which happened faster than I had expected, and I've had both incredibly awesome games, and incredibly horrible games.

Its hit and miss, I guess. You just have to be patient. The kids on XBL get mad because this "n00b" takes his time and gets in enough kills to finish mid-pack consistently, but thats all I really care about.

one of the most random issues i've had was lack of registering hits. in about 5 different games i've emptied a clip into someone at point blank range and they don't die. once i emptied 2 clips into a guy and nothing. then he turned around and shot me and, obviously, i died. what gives on that? it's random crap like that that makes me annoyed at cod4.

I've noticed this too. I finally made it to level 30. Now that a buddy helped me set up some profiles for weapons and perks I can play a little better. I don't know the maps that well either. But I will say that if i'm level 30 there shouldn't be someone in my room that is at level 55 or has dropped his level 3 times and is a UBER CoD4 player. Give it like 5 levels either way and match with people in my own league. I hate respawning then being dead again as soon as I turn left.

Here are some of the tactics that i use for survival.

For my perks once you unlock the primary weapon silencer it is a must. This will keep you invisible on the radar when you fire your primary weapon. The red dot halo sight may be tempting but your iron sights are faster. If your a sniper a UAV jammer i find is a good tool as well as the ability to sprint for long distances. And from my experience the last stand perk is cool but not extremely nessacary. For the most part your better off not using it. If your aiming speed is a problem another handy perk is the steady aim. This is mainly for close combat. It will allow you to fire more accurate from the hip when firing at a nearby enemy. For the earlie ranks its a lifesaver.

Try experimenting with different combinations of characters and make them for precise engagement situations. For my customs I have Long Range, Short Range, Sniper, Close Quarters, and Testing Grounds (for new idea combinations.)

When playing a Team game I will always follow another player on my team. There is a better chance for both of you to survive if you have each others back. If you follow a more experienced player this will also help you learn the maps better. However I dont suggest following around any snipers. It tends to annoy them as a snipers life is a very lonely one and in COD4 there is no need for a spotter.

I love this game, but it is frustrating for me at times because I just can't seem to achieve the same skill level as most of those around me. I have always preferred the keyboard / mouse combination, but I play CoD4 on the XBox.

I have found that if you make a good group of friends and play with them frequently, you will find the experience more relaxed and enjoyable. I play fairly often with a great group of guys, and although I am not nearly as strong a player as they are, I enjoy the game a lot more than when I am just doing random pick up games.

Play with a consistent group. Anyway, thats my quick 2 cents.

oh, it's pretty sad that despite all the random CRAP that goes on in this game, i still play it all the time. psn id: ijae. we'll eat grens and bullets for lunch sometime.

ps- i'm pretty not great at the game, so it's amazing i'm level 37.

I have the same issues with with not being able to connect to my friends[Unable to connect to host, lost connection to host],but if I host the game it works fine.Do not know why,I have the same isp/speed and basic setup. Also, yes get a group of friends instead of playing with randoms it makes it allot more fun.Oh by the way I am on the 360,not the PS3.

If you have trouble learning the maps start a private match and don't invite anyone. You'll be free to roam around the level without anyone shooting at you. That's how I got acquainted with them. It's really helpful.

Also, if you can catch me online (and we can connect) I'm not against showing you some cool things and giving you some tips and tricks. I'm not the BEST out there, but I'm about to start prestige mode a second time, so I can hold my own in most games.

I am truly addicted to CoD4... I played Halo3 the other day and it felt horrible. I just suck at aiming with the BR, sniper etc... but in CoD4, I'm vary rarely out of the top 3.

It just feels so much more natural, the guns feel real, you don't feel cheated every time you die. In halo, you always feel "I could swear I shot him first" but you're the one ragdolling.

But, the matchmaking in Halo should have sent the CoD team back to make a patch.

I live in New Zealand, so what's the point in connecting me to a full game of Americans? — I can't play, because of the lag and I lag up everyone else.

There's plenty of Kiwis and Aussies playing, just let me set connection as the priority when choosing a game.

I have extremely frustrating runs with Team Deathmatch, because the balancing is terrible against partys. I love HARDCORE Team Deathmatch, but too many idiots come in and team kill.

I'm dying for some DLC, and hope they fix some of the balance, and matchmaking settings.
