This is responce to posts I've read in different places online basically saying that the warhammer computer games copyed things from warcraft/starcraft. Warcraft is a great computer version of the table top war games like warhammer. I would be suprised if at least one of the people who made warcraft didn't play warhammer, that said warhammer came first. Immitation is the best form of flatery, or maybe great minds just think alike. The two games have a lot in common warhammer and warcraft are too easy, so 40k and starcraft. Protoss = Eldar, Zerg = Tyranids. I'm not saying anyone copyied anything but I would bet warhammer inspired a lot of warcraft and starcraft. I personally prefer Dawn of War to Warcraft 3 but thats just me. Just wondering what other people think. With Warhammer Online comming will game warhammer games live up to the licence or will the best "warhammer like" games be the warcraft games.

Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40K predate Warcraft by at least a decade. However, there is no resource management in Warhammer. So, one could never say that Warcraft copied Warhammer.

It's possible that although the Warhammer IP predates Warcraft, the game mechanics of a computer version could still be copied for Warcraft.

Now, I was a huge Warhammer junkie back in the day but I've never been good at RTS games.

Sorry I'm being an asshole.

But in relation to the topic at hand, I believe that Starcraft is far superior to Warhammer 40k and Warcraft. Yes, I realize that Starcraft may have copied some elements from Warhammer, but the game play was amazing, which is what really matters.

I think Warhammer is better than Warcraft universe-wise, but RTS-wise I like the Blizzard series more.

I don't really think you can compare the two anyway. The experiences are quite different.

I agree you can't really compare the two. One is a table top game, the other is a computer RTS game. Maybe Warcraft and Starcraft did take inspiration from Warhammer, but I'm sure Warhammer took inspiration for it's universe from Lord of the Rings books which probably got inspiration from somewhere else again. In the end I don't really think it matters.

I played the Warhammer 40k table top game back in the day, but I never really got into Warcraft or Starcraft because I could lose to a rock while playing an RTS. However MMO's are quite different. Now that the Warhammer mmo is coming out to play along side WoW, you could certainly make comparisons between them. I never really got into WoW, but I'm keeping my eye of Warhammer. Could be interesting.

Everything about the Warcraft and Starcraft "settings" is taken from Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40k.

I mean, Starcraft is just Space Marines vs. Eldar vs. Tyranids.

Obviously the gameplay isn't the same because...well, ones and RTS video game and the other is a tabletop wargame. Most of the WH attempts at video games sucked.

Now they're basically ripping off the gameplay of games that ripped off their settings, and their games don't suck so bad.

And when it comes to their respective MMO's... I got to play a little of Warhammer Beta at last years GenCon. It's similar to Warcraft is look and feel, but then the Warhammer universe in general is like that. Warhammer will probably appeal more to those who are into PvP over PvE, but other than that it is hard to say what effect, if any, it will have on WoW's population.

It must be said that WoW is yet to have something as kewl as the Goblin Squig Herder class, though (where your Goblin can get inside his pet squig and ride it around like a bulbous, toothy moonhopper).

I have played both and the feel for the MMO is completely different. In WAR there are no classes that just hang back and support. Everybody has to fight. "Healer" classes are almost required to fight to power healing affects. As for which one is better only time will tell as he final version of WAR has yet to be released. I have both RTS games and I find the Warhammer 40k one to be better. There are more races and the open campaign of Dark Crusade really pushed it to a new level. The newest expansion yet to be released will have multiple planets for you to fight across.

Warhammer 40k RTS and especially Dark Crusade is one of the best RTS's out there IMO.
