View Full Version : How bad is the Super Bowl Halftime show going to be?

When I heard the announcement that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was going to be the act for this years Super Bowl halftime show, I kind of rolled my eyes but now that we are two weeks away, it has left me wondering what I will be doing with that half hour two Sundays from now. I get that they want to book a act that has the least potential of getting naked on national television but seriously, how many old white guys with guitars can we have (Sorry Prince)? Can we expect Journey in 2009? Or what about Ratt or Winger?

Give it to Kanye. Hell let him plan the whole thing and we'll have him, The GOOD Music Camp (Common, John Legend, GLC and Consequence) and Lupe Fiasco tear down the stage.

first off prince isn't an old white guy. that doesn't even make sense. secondly the super bowl is the big tv event. most of the people in this country are over 30. they try to chose artist with mass appeal. i can think of few better that tom petty

I can't believe you just equated Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with Winger and Ratt.

I heard Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson are going to do a duet, and Ryan Seacrest was hosting it. At least that's what The Soup said and then proceeded to mercilessly rip on it.

Maybe Tom Petty will "free fall" and then get "run down" before the show... hmmm well that's a bit harsh I guess. Well anyway... obviously, I'm not looking forward to it as you can tell and I will try not to watch it if I can keep from it.

Since I think the main viewership tends to be older than 16, it makes sense that Tom Petty would be a consideration, or Journey. Justin Timkerlake/Janet Jackson was a flop only remembered for the "wardrobe malfunction."

If an artist has proven himself over time, then why take the chance on someone who may die out as a fad? More fans out there of Tom Petty than 50 Cent.

Hell, if Petty is on halftime, I'm now going to watch.

Prince is not an old white guy, and his half time show is the best one that I can ever remember. Seriously, I heard more people last year talking about how great Prince's performance was than about the game. Most performers come off sounding worse live on TV than they do on CD, but that made two times in the last several years (including SNL) that Prince completely dominated live on televsion.

Tom Petty isn't a small name. He easily drew the biggest crowd at ACL fest year before last (around 70,000). Young and old alike seemed to be very into him. I wasn't really interested in seeing him but he sounded pretty damn good live. I imagine that this one will be pretty well received.

It will definitely pale in comparison to Prince.

Absolutely right on all accounts.

Tom Petty drives NASCAR right?

I am really looking forward to seeing Greenbay in the halftime show - but dont know how they are going to do Boulevard of Broken Dreams in a stadium.

Ok first of all, never said Prince was an old white guy hence the Sorry Prince in parentheses. I didn't forget about The Artist Formerly Known As...

Tom Petty works for me. I just got the Greatest Hits album (from the early 90s) for Christmas.

Just as long as he doesn't flash any old man boob. yeeuck!

The only old-guy Halftime show that I'd be into is a Beatles reunion. Bring Paul and Ringo back together, maybe throw in Clapton or Jimmy Page on guitar and I would watch every minute. But Tom Petty? No, thanks. It needs to be an event. Tom Petty isn't enough of an event. It doesn't measure up to the spectacle that the Super Bowl is.

Just like every half time show, horrible! I mean really, who watches? We're usually outside playing some football after the rush of the first half of the game.

Destin, FL must be the Tom Petty hating capital of the world, since he doesn't realize that most people actually think it is cool that Petty's performing.

Out of all the bands/singers in the world they got Tom P. come on! WTF?

I'm not saying that Tom Petty is a bad act, just, they could get a better act for the freakin' Superbowl.

My dad had that one. Something about my dad reminds me of Tom Petty, and vice versa.
