With all the talk about TV shows, I started to wonder if Australian shows were shown in America. I know quite a few Australian shows are aired in Britain. Such as "Neighbours" and "Home and Away". And god knows we get a lot of American shows here. Even if we can be a whole year behind.

So what Australian shows are people watching???... ...if any???...

I know I'm really looking forward to Underbelly (www.underbellytv.com), mainly because my dad is a cop and was loosely involved. In real life, not the show.

And if no one is watching... ...Why not???... ...do they just not interest you???... ...or are they not aired???...

Underbelly looks good. I have to say though, as an Aussie, I'm pretty disappointed in the variety and creativity in our television industry. How about some genre shows? Every second ad I see for a big budget Aussie series is either a bloody cop show, a gameshow, reality show or some wanky "gen y" drama show. As an Aussie geek, I would love to see a home developed Sci-Fi or Action / Adventure show or just something that sparks some imagination. I'm pretty sure we have the talent.

If you want some home-grown sci-fi, there is a remake of Under the Mountain (which is a novel and a TV mini-series in the 80's) scheduled for cinema release in the next couple of years. Sure, that's a Kiwi sci-fi tale, but it's a start.

Not much love for Aussie TV in the US.

"Prisoner" was aired here as "Cell Block H" many years ago, but the only Australian TV you find is one the cable channels, and not on free to air.

McCleod's Daughters is shown here on one of the channels (don't watch, so couldn't tell you which one). That show from a couple of years back set in St Kilda with the bunch of Gen Xers (I want to say "The Sum of Us", but I know thats not right) was on a station that got cancelled. Kath & Kim hsow on one ofthe networks that out cable company doesn't get. A RealityTV (a Fox station) shows Aussie reality TV programming occassionally - The Block, The Dragons Den. Kylie Kwong has her cooking shows on one of the cable networks as well (Fine Living?).

So, as you can see - it slim pickings over here.

Australia could teach the US a thing or two about doing a decent cop drama though. In the US, unless it is CSI or Law & Order, its pretty lame Water Rats or Stingers would go down well over here. Before anyone points to "The Shield" - that is an exception to the rule.

I am tempted to pick up a SlingBox, and get my parents a cable/internet service package net time I head home so I can get some Aussie TV in the US. Until then, I need to hear about a show, and hope that it is made available via "other means" if I want to watch it from here.

Although I'm an Aussie, I'm not really into Aussie TV all that much. Cop shows and dramas (which we have an abundance of, oh and lifestyle shows as well) aren't my cup of tea, so I don't watch any of those. I think the only Aussie show I do watch is All Saints, the medical drama. The writing is generally very above average and the characters have a lot of depth, but I really didn't like last season's finale. So that was a bit of a let down.

There were quite a few good Aussie shows back in the day, but I think in the last few years, Australian TV has taken a turn for the worse. :(

Wow, I didn't even think there was that much! I saw 'The Wiggles' on one of the kids channels the other day, I think thats the first Aussie show I've seen in the last 7 months...

I heard that a cable channel showed We Can Be Heroes as 'The Nominees' or something like that last year.
