Some found footage on Cloverfield. Is the Star Trek prequel preview promising? The new Turok demo's a dinosaur. Bionic Commando in 2 dimensions. Plus, the boys review The Boys.

bring back spoiler cam, i want to hear more views on the actual movie im actually really interested in your full on take of the beginning middle and end of the movie, how the monster was, looked and acted. please:)
especially the night vision scene and also the ending(Hud ending, Rob & Beth ending, and 2nd Rob and Beth Ending)
although it wasn't a comedy (intentionally) Gordy Hoffman (lesser known brother oh Phillip Seymour) wrote and directed an indie flick about a bachelorette party gone horribly awry called A Coat of Snow (http://imdb.com/title/tt0383274/).
Christ was that movie terrible. I had the "opportunity" to see it at our local film fest here in rochester.
I don't think that counts, but there it is just the same.

Loved the Comics opening, so cute. I just ordered Wizzywig, can't wait.
And I totally agree with Alex, I want the nail file thing that you just have to touch your nail and it paints it a new color. Fifth Element was the first Sci-Fi movie the kid ever got to watch. I don't think we go a quarter without watching it.

'Chalk another one up... great show... couple things:
I think the Cloverfield background for this week was very nicely done. Plus, the new comics opening was good and Steve out did himself this week.
In the movie section, I'm on Jeff's side with Cloverfield. It was so intense and I really hope next week that you all are able to talk about it more (spoilers included), since it's been out for two weeks by then. I do think this movie is very interesting in relation to 9/11, and because of that, it works on more than one level. I was really surprised that Dan liked it the least.
Finally, I'm glad to see that Jeff kept his promise about LOST season 3 to the couple of us. As of right now, I'm adding Season 1 Disc 1 of the Shield on my netflix queue.
Again, really fun show this week.

Yes Primer is one of my favorite movies ever also. To think how he made it for only $7,000 is almost unfathomable. What's interesting is how in Cloverfield's case $25M is considered low-budget. But those are two very different movies that I enjoyed in different ways.

I'm really looking forward to the remake of Bionic Commando. I think the co-op will add a lot to an already fun game. Like Jeff said, Capcom has been great about their classic updates. Mega Man Powered Up and Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins were great, as I'm sure Street Fighter 2 HD will be.
However, Capcom didn't make Double Dragon, and I'm sure you guys know that Konami made Contra. It was probably just a slip up, but these are such classic games that I was surprised the mistake was made. To me, it's almost like someone saying Nintendo released Sonic, and not realizing their mistake. Hate to bust your balls over something so trivial, but I wanted to give credit where it was due.

I just watched the clip again, and noticed that Jeff did catch the Contra mistake. Sorry. Didn't catch the Double Dragon one though, so there! (I swear I hit the edit button on my last post)

I feel like Alex was spot on with his analysis of The Boys. I think maybe Jeff and Dan brought a bit too much Preacher baggage with them. I dig the Preacher, but c'mon.
Maybe next comic segment they could do something of Warren Ellis's--Transmet maybe? :)
Cheers,

I was in the middle of writing my review for my college newspaper about Cloverfield and was completely thinking about how it might spawn crappy knock offs with handy cams. I'm glad someone pointed that out. Definitely loved it.

I agreed with damn near everything Jeff said about Cloverfield. We were eye to eye, man. Then when he mentioned 'Marvels' (such a great reference), my solidly hetero-man-crush was complete.
I was kind of shocked at Dan's LOVE of Preacher. Hey, I loved it and all, but...wow. And when Preacher is reissued again with new covers and all, I really hope one of the blurbs says "Better Than The Bible-Alex Albrecht".
And good call on Dan mentioning Robot Jox. That movie was AWESOME!

Good show guys.
I'm still not too sure if I should see Cloverfield or not. When I first saw the preview, I was pretty excited about it, but after all the hype and everything I'm really not that interested anymore. The only reason I want to see it now is so I can see the monster thing.. though I could also go to google and find it in about .0002 seconds. What did everyone else think of it? Hmm.. I think there was a thread on it.. I should probably go read that before someone posts the link for me, huh? :p

Well, I know Dan thinks it is leaps and bounds better than Watchmen, but for me I think Watchmen is a more accomplished work - deeper, smarter, more thought-provoking, and more complex. In terms of pure story, though, I agree with Dan that Preacher is the best the comics world has to offer.

Dan, I love your hair longer it looks really sexseh.
You look different as well Jeff but I can't figure out why - looks good though.
The extra strong center light on everyone was a little bright for my eyes. Is that a change or was that just a weird light?
Glad Jeff is watching Lost season 3.

w00t! I've been eagerly waiting this episode, and you guys delivered. In all honesty, I've heard a lot of really bad stuff about Cloverfield, and I decided it would be best to wait to hear what you guys said before I spent my $6 (hooray student discounts!). I'll go and see it this weekend, I now feel out of the loop...
As for Turok, I agree. Thing is, I haven't played the demo. I don't want to. It looks horrible, and never being a fan of the Turok series, I don't see why I'd even want to play it in the first place...
Looking forward to next week men, until then, keep up the good work!

Hey Jeff or Dan or who ever's around to satisfy my curiosity,
Why do you guys try to keep it under an hour? Is it a bandwidth or a licensing thing? It seems like you guys got a lot of crap for the super short show when you got back from vacation and now people are chattering about what else you might have had to say about Cloverfield. Sounds like people want more rad.
Granted I probably imbibe TRS a little differently than most but I wouldn't mind if you just talked until you were done with the subject. No need to cut things short.
Regardless, awesome job as usual, Team Awesome. :D

Great episode, had a good time watching it. It wasn't a huge deal, or anything, but did anybody notice that the lighting seemed a bit bright? Faces seemed a little washed out at times. I don't mean for this to be a complaint or anything, just something to look at? Anybody see that?
Really psyched for Wizzywig, and I wasn't going to see Cloverfield (though I was considering just to see a certain trailer...), but I think the guys convinced me. I wish I had more time to explore all the guys' suggestions.

Dukes of Hazzard and Thundarr the Barbarian...awesome...references that hit close to home...
When Dan brought up Robot Jox after Jeff's love of robotech...jeff just quietly said "Don't" like he was thinking "Don't shit on my dream dude." I laughed my ass off at that and had to rewind it a couple times...such a deadpan "don't" as if he was warning a drunk Dan not to hit on his sister or something...definately a "I love ya Dan, but yer about to cross the line into shut the F up ville, population YOU!"...god damn that was funny...
...and the bloopers, as always, are priceless. See Dan, yer not the only one who needs a few takes...lol

yeah i don't wanna seem like a hater or anything but WOW. completely shocked about the Cloverfield review. Personally i thought the movie was horrible, and not really well done. I wasn't convinced by any of the characters except Hud the guy holding the camera. Maybe im just a scrooge, but to me it was a lame youtube video with special effects. I might have just had a different experience because everyone in the theater wanted it to be over. Oh well.... am I the only one?

I really enjoyed the show as well. The intro was killing me because I watched it while I was walking to the bus this morning and was racking my brain to think of what movie it was. Like someone mentioned, as soon as I saw the pool in the shot I knew, they're really very clever and always provide freshness to each episode.
I'm looking at Preacher right now on Rad Recommendations I think I'm going to have to check it out.

First.. never been a next-gen console geek. Honestly, I've been too poor of a %$%*@! to afford one.
I really have enjoyed my PC and Mac gaming. I had nearly all of the console systems growing up. Nintendo, ORIGINAL 2 ton GameBoy, Sega Genesis.. about 5 other things.
Now I pay for things like house notes :p
Seeing the Bionic Commando re-vamp of the 2D version...
.... makes me want to buy an Xbox 360. After all this time of thinking that I'd never really have a whole lot of use these days.. time-wise and for other reasons. I would buy and Xbox 360 just for this game. (and an Xbox 360 over a PS3 because I don't want to be raped by Sony.. again)
I've now had to change my shorts twice today. Once after hearing about it.. and another after watching the trailer for it.

I was 13 or so when I first saw Robot Jox and was fucking BLOWN away! I was so totally a big fan of giant robots. Then I saw RJ2 when I was 14 or so and wanted to kill myself. Giant robot future FTW Jeff!
On a side note...wouldn't Cloverfield have been better if a giant Voltron-esque mech came from the skies at the last bridge scene and fought the monster?

Jeff Cannata... After your numerous (too many times to count) references to 'the greatest show on television' ie the shield, I decided to check it out.
I must say after watching the first 10 episodes of season one, it is excellent. I was shocked at the amount of mature content, this was (or is) a prime time show correct? I'm not complaining it just caught me off guard. I have already 'acquired' season 2 and am anticipating yet another great season. Thank you for the recommendation, and hopefully Dan and Alex will one day be able to appreciate the true entertainment goodness that is the shield.

Hey Jeff, I can understand your apprehension toward the 9/11-esque shots in Cloverfield, but to put it in perspective. Cloverfield is heavily inspired by both the intent and feeling of the original Gojira (Godzilla in Japan w/out Raymond Burr), which was released only 7 years after the US dropped two nuclear bombs on Japan. That film had shots of people dying from radiation poisoning due to Godzilla and was one of the first films made in Japan to really explore the horror of the event. If you haven't seen the original godzilla it really is worth checking out - its right up there with the original king kong as the best monster movie of all time.
Oh I also have to say that this was one of the best questions you've had on the show. I would have to say I think we are heading closer to something like the Ghost in the Shell Universe, but by far star trek TNG era would be pretty bad ass to live in.

Why? How is that any different than talking about one of the guy's opinions on a movie or mentioning a funny blooper? Wouldn't both of those things ruin the episode in the same way as talking about the opening for those who haven't seen the show yet?

I made a simple request as a moderator. I don't think it's unreasonable.
As a fellow TRS-fan and forum member, I don't think funny banter and commentary points from the Rad-dudes aren't subject to the same spoilage. Knowing what the title of the opening homage beforehand simply ruins the experience. Posting it openly just discourages members from using the forum.
I actually think your point about ruining the entire program by divulging too much detail is a valid point. However, banning all discussion of a given release is a pretty unreasonable step if taken to that extreme.
As I said before, talk about it all you like, just don't name it. It's much easier to ignore it that way.

"OK, this may be bordering on the grotesque, but the way it was explained to me by the writer is you hold two seashells like chopsticks, pull gently and scrape what’s left with the third. You asked for it…. Be careful what you ask for, sorry."

I think the Romans used sponges. Why not sponges?

I actually think your point about ruining the entire program by divulging too much detail is a valid point. However, banning all discussion of a given release is a pretty unreasonable step if taken to that extreme.
Actually, it's not a valid point. This thread is for discussion of the show and any meaningful discussion includes a myriad of spoilers. You can't have much of a discussion of the show without talking about its high points or its special nuances. Different high points and different nuances will spoil the show for different people. You can't sanitize a thread like this to accommodate people who haven't seen the show without restricting meaningful discussion from those who have. Without meaningful discussion, you can't have a very interesting thread.
I know that you are only, for now, restricting naming the opening sequence reference but what good does that really do? One person may have their experience spoiled more by someone talking about one of Steve's clever additions. Another may have their experience spoiled by knowing what one of the guy's opinion of a game is. This is not the thread to be browsing or posting in if you haven't seen the episode and don't want it spoiled. There is no sense in ruining the thread for someone who really wants to talk about the opening sequence in detail to save some who hasn't seen it yet.
If there really is a huge demand to know about what happened in the show without spoilers, then maybe a separate "Episode XX review -- no spoilers" thread should be made. I don't think that these people actually exist in any meaningful amounts but if they do, this is a better way to accommodate them than banning specific discussion of the opening sequence. If someone complained yesterday about having their TRS experience ruined by finding out what the opening sequence was, tomorrow someone else will complain about a different type of spoiler. The answer is to contain them in their own thread or ignore them but certainly not to limit discussion to appease them.

Why? How is that any different than talking about one of the guy's opinions on a movie or mentioning a funny blooper? Wouldn't both of those things ruin the episode in the same way as talking about the opening for those who haven't seen the show yet?
I have to say that I agree. If I dont want to know the opening, I dont look at the specific episode thread. No big deal though, its not as if it affects me as I dont recognize the openings half the time. Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents.

Personally I don't get why anyone would read this thread if they hadn't viewed the episode already, but . . . Moving on!
I think that I'm the only person who actually enjoyed the characters in Cloverfield. I guess they were pretty cliche, but I just bought it for some reason. When the first explosion hit, I actually found myself thinking, "Oh yeah, this is a monster movie, isn't it?"
I just started watching Lost and I don't know how I've avoided this show for so long. It's fantastic. So I'm glad that it'll be discussed on the show too. I've heard that later seasons don't hold up, but I'm not too worried.
And finally, THANK YOU to Dan for mentioning Back To The Future II, I was hoping and praying that somebody would.
Great show!
P.S.
I'd like to put a bid in for a review of No More Heroes on Wii.

Hey guys, great show as always. I agree with your take on PRIMER the movie. One comment though, I believe the name is pronounced with a short "i".
It's an old school term for a book that cover the basic elements of a subject. A word more appropriate for this movie. I don't believe they would name it after a paint undercoating.
Here's a link where you can hear the difference between the two words.

yet both definitions essentially mean a base or foundation...actually, I've only heard british folk pronounce it as primmer...which is odd considering some of the basic rules taught in english classes about a short vowel being followed by a double consonant, etc. (my textbook English may be rusty, though) It's particularly odd considering the base, even in the link you...linked, is Prime.
Reminds me of discussions I've watched about the proper pronounciation of root...and route, for that matter.
Regarding naming the opening, I think it's a bit odd for someone to be reading this thread before watching the episode...considering the thread is about the episode and what it contains. I can understand deleting new threads about the opening sequence, but removing the title from posts in the episode thread is just ridiculous...in my opinion.

I love you guys! Just started watching and I totally enjoy listening to you guys chat.
But...the term "veggisaur" is actually in the movie 'Jurassic Park.' It is when Dr. Grant, Tim and Lex are stuck in the tree with the brachiosaurs nearby.
I'm a big dino nerd and I heard that term in the show and thought I would throw that out there. :)
"Veggiesaurus Lex, veggiesaurus!" "It's like a big cow!"

Hey bro, major grammar and word nerd here - and one of my pet peeves is when people mispronounce "primer" when they're talking about learning or catching up on a subject. But I don't believe that's the reference in this case. You are correct to say that the film certainly isn't based on an undercoat of paint, either. I think it named after an engine "primer", which is pronounced like primer paint. Hence, no mistake here. Very intentional.

At the Q&A at Sundance, it was explained that the intended title was with the short i sound (like "primmer"). But as people kept pronouncing it with the long i, the director realized that worked as well, since there are so many different meanings for the word. I think that's kind of poetic, considering the myriad interpretations of the movie itself.

As far as that last question goes, I'm gonna agree with Dan that Children of Men is the most realistic protrayel of what's in store for is..MINUS that whole dystopian thing. Well...atleast the not having babies part, dystopian is still possible though.
For the future I wish for, it's easy. Futurama anyone!?!?! I wanna get drunk with some robots!
