For the love of all that is rad, can people stop referring to xbox 360 and ps3 games as "next gen". The 360 has been out since Nov. 05 and ps3 has been out since Nov. 06. I think more than enough time has passed to consider these systems current gen. The guys said it so many times on episode 44, I can't take it anymore. Please stop calling new games "next gen" unless they're coming out for the ps4 or the xbox 720.

I think it'll always be next-gen until we see proof of the 720 or PS4, mostly because people just like saying next-gen... next-gen.

Okay, I'll stop.
It really is just short-hand that everyone knows - and "current-gen" doesn't roll off the tongue.
But I get your point. I'll stop.

Frankly, I'm not sure what the major infraction is about. Plenty of terms are used colloquially in a way that is abusive to the actual definitions. It's part of the evolution of language.
A podcast is not a legal document. Unless you're in a forum where formality of language is required is required, I think any use of language that results in a successful communication of ideas is valid.
Indeed, as it is early in the console hardware cycle and nature of the eventual release of replacement consoles is speculative, I think "Next-Gen" still can apply without guilt.
If "current-gen" is a tongue twister, try "late-gen."
Besides, I think it can be argued that Wii and XBOX 360 are this-gen and PS3 is "next-gen" as the PS3's best days are yet to come.

I do believe you can call it what you want, I have had this same discussion with someone before and in my opinion the OP is incorrect...
Next Gen, means the 'next generation', for example my 5 year old son is also the 'next generation' but I am the 'next generation' also, from my parents, and so on and so on.
Also from wikipedia:
"As a buzzword:
The phrase Next Generation is cited as a frequently-used buzzword...carries a connotation of newness or modernness. "
To me Next Gen means and always will mean (when use in relation to consoles and console games) PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii. As they are the newest and most modern generation we have.
Don't stop using 'next gen' ...embrace it!

Last gen was PS2,Dreamcast(yes it was last gen even though it died quick it was meant to compete with PS2),Xbox,Gamecube
Current gen is PS3/360/Wii as those are the current consoles.
Next gen does not exist yet.

So I don't exist? As I am the next generation from my father...
Slightly out of context I know, but you see where I am coming from.

So defined by Ryudo...
My question is, did you find the use of the term in this manner confusing?
As a math professor, I'm usually the first to pick nits. However, I don't find the admittedly abusive use of the term "next-gen" in this context as an impediment to understanding. Therefore, anyone with having a problem with it is just being anal.

I'm playing through some of the top console games and the graphics are already dated by the likes of Crysis on the PC. If anything is next gen in Consoles it's the next gen of consoles that can play Crysis at the level the PC can currently play it at.

Try buying a PC that costs the same as a 360, and getting the same quality games/graphics etc. it just isn't possible... 360, PS3 and Wii are the 'Next-Gen' consoles, till anything better is here, which there isn't and wont be for a while.

God, I hope so. It hasn't really done much yet. It would be a crying shame if we had already seen its best days.

Well isn't NEXT mean literally the following...should I call this week next week because it follows last week?
Next week has not started yet.

Why does this matter? We know what they are talking about when they say next gen so I think they should continue.

good point...why not call it "this-gen" if current or modern is too much...

I admire your stubbornness, but I'm not arguing about definitions. I conceded that the use of the term next isn't technically accurate.
My point, if you'll take it, is that you understood what they were talking about...despite the lack of correctness.

It's like calling a car made in the summer of 2007 the 2008 model, or plastering March 2008 on the cover of a magazine on the stand right now. It makes people feel ahead of things, like they have to act right now or will end up behind.

You guys are personally well within your rights to say next gen. Especially considering the idea of upgraded graphics from an older version of graphics to this current generation is considered giving a game the "next gen" treatment. The new 2d Bionic Commando is a great example.
Also it seems that everything anyone does anymore is now considered reworking the graphics and creating a new next gen graphics engine, I mean Unreal Tournament 3 anyone. Yes you can attribute this to people getting use to what each system can do and what boundries they can push.

I just watched the newest episode and i noticed the guys didn't use "next gen" at all. I know everyone had their opinion one way or another on the issue, but its good to know that the guys really do listen to the input of their fans. TRS = Best podcast ever.

When the PS3 and XBox 360 came out there were not a lot of games released, let alone games that took full advantage of the hardware. From my perspective it doesn't matter when these systems came out. I would argue that a lot of recent titles for the XBox 360 and PS3 could be viewed as "next gen", definitely! I'm applying this term to the software rather than the just the hardware. I would even view new games coming out for the Wii as next gen because they are just so different than the way we use to play games.
Current gen just sounds weird anyway.

PS2s still outsell PS3s. Based on usage isn't PS2 current gen and PS3 next gen?

I think you could accurately represent the PS3 as next-gen in much the same way my 3-year old daughter is next-gen. It's born, but haven't grown into it's potential yet.

I'd say anything currently still being produced can't be 'last gen', and those arguing against next-gen say the term has to be something not produced, which would lead to both being current gen?
Basically, it's rather subjective...they're next gen if you're relating them to the previous systems, current if you refer to them on their own, etc.
I say call them whatever you want.
