I was at work, stalking the store, when I came upon a couple looking at cat pans. I asked them if I could help and as they turned to me with questions, I realized that I was talking to one of my all time favorite comic book artists, Guy Davis (BPRD, Deadline, Sandman Mystery Theatre). http://www.guydavisartworks.com

Oh, hello Mr. Davis. I said.

He stared at me a little strangely, like I had been looking through his trash or something.

So I said, Sorry, I'm just a fan. I've been to a few of your signings... Is there something particular I can help you out with?

So he and his girlfriend/life partner talked with me about their problem and I think I was able to help them out. It was a totally normal transaction, that is until Guy Davis said:

We come in here all the time - next time I'll bring you some comics.

I said, Wow. That would be great. Honestly, I didn't actually believe him - but I still thought he was totally awesome to say something like that.

Anyway, later in the week I work a normal shift and went home. The dog and I went outside and got pretty muddy out in the woods, so I dropped back in to work to get some dog shampoo. I was kneeling in the shampoo isle when none other than Guy Davis smoked up to me with a big envelope.

Hey Nathan. I brought you some comics.

I stood there a little bewildered. Wow. Thank you!

And that was really about it - I was pretty blown away, that is, until I got home and opened the envelope. Inside were one of his limited edition sketchbooks, and the latest BPRD trade paperback collection. Both were personalized and autographed.

And the dog got a bath. How awesome is that?

You lucky bastard! ;)

All kidding aside I've always been a Davis fan, but that makes me like him even more.
Thanks for sharing!

Farking awesome story. He does some amazing luck. Kahuna's right, you are one lucky bastard.

EDIT: I'm leaving my mistake because it's so dumb. Sentence number 2 should read "He does some amazing work." That's what I get for trying to type and talk at the same time.

I love finding out the creators I like are genuinely nice. Good to hear he is.

that's what nerds dream of whenever they go to dog cleaning stores. Why can't stan lee have a dirty dog??

I did have a cool run in at work in oct. Harold Ramis came into my work and I got to show him what games to buy for his grandkids...best customer ever.

I met him @ a signing at an LCS in East Lansing, MI. I found him to be incredibly gracious, relaxed, and very cool.

That's an awesome story. Been a fan of his ever since his days penciling THE REALM back in the late-80s.

Anyone who is into his art should really check out his graphic novel series, The Marquis. He writes and draws beautifully well.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of Guy Davis awesomeness. There's a whole thread devoted to it at the Hellboy CBR forum. One of the nicest guys ever. Often when you buy original art he throws in a personalized note with another sketch. He goes out of his way to do a little extra.

Of course, Mike Mignola also puts Guy in the awesome column. He is ecstatic over the art and amazed that Guy does eight pages a day.

He rarely travels to conventions other than MotorCity con.

We need more like him!

I believe it, but I don't. His con sketches take 20 minutes...

Maybe that's eight pages of rough pencils. Then he adds details in ink.

Don't know, all the more reason for someone to go to MotorCity Con and ask him!

wow. I'm so jealous! That's an awesome story but it doesn't surprise me.
I met him at a signing in Philly and there was a kid a few people ahead of me who when he got to Davis, you could hear that he had a severe speech impediment. There was this moment of tense awkwardness as everyone around was watching, but Guy didn't miss a beat or get thrown off a millimeter. He just talked to the kid like he was talking to everyone else, and you could tell how much the kid appreciated that.
I guess that's more like common decency, but there was just something about the way Davis handled the whole thing that made me respect him so much more.

So, does he live in your town or something?
