just saw your Episode 11 - Rev3 Studio Operations and it was AWESOME...i'm in the process of building a little mobile webcasting truck and was curious how you like your Miranda Alto HD...i'm being told by various people that there is too much dealy to use them for live monitoring...of course none of these people have actually used it...but that hasn't stopped them from telling us we are idiots if we don't buy a bunch of monitors instead of the miranda and big LCD.

i've looked online everywheere but haven't found any actual hand on reviews...just PR pieces of where they have been installed...

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
-hungry

Welcome, hungry.

I've gone ahead and moved this thread to the Gazette forum where I'm sure it will get more attention from the appropriate people.

Miranda and Evertz make similar units. The Evertz MVP is used a little more, at least in the remote production trucks and studios I have seen. Miranda products work. There are remote production trucks used by the big networks that use this type of technology to bring you everything up to and including Sunday's football game.

Now, some of the cheaper systems do have issues. One system that we used today, forget the maker, the cameras looked like they were strobing as the camera ops moved the cameras.

Why not get one in for a demo? See for yourself.

i wish we could unfortunately we are under a completely unrealistic deadline and buying stuff through a leasing company...which is a horrible combination.

i was just hoping dave or someone who has seen the miranda in action could calm my fears about dealy with the Miranda Kaleido Alto HD

I have been in remote trucks that have virtual monitor walls but I can't say if they were using the Miranda units, which one, or the Evertz. Yes, there is a slight delay compared to the same signal going to say a CRT monitor but the delay is slight. All you need to do is have program audio go through a delay box and have a person speak, a basic lip sync check and dial the delay in. Yes, you may need a few more delay boxes if you have Miranda's at say a VT position, need to make sure you can accurately monitor audio there, same with transmission.

doesnt matter what equipment you use there will always be a delay. Yes there is a microscopic amount of delay on the Miranda but i dont think it is any worse than the delay from the evertz boxes. The thing is there is 2 ways to fix the problem. Delay the audio to match the monitors. However this requires additional boxes and you run the chance of audio gain offsets if you dont set everything right. This is what i would do in large facilities with full time engineers on staff to keep everything in check. The other way to do it is to give a dedicated program monitor from the initial D/A to the audio position.

The next question would be "so dave how do i deal with the delay for everyone else in the CR?"
Buy the audio option on the miranda or evertz boxes and run the CR monitors thru that. Not only will it sync the audio but it will also give you the levels on screen to give confidence monitors for everyone else.

i didn't realize they had that option...that's a very good obvious solution...:)
thanks!

Also, what DDR software are you guys using...that touch screen looks like a good little solution...but googling around, i haven't been able to find anything that has that interfact.

Dave mentioned it is a Ross box, same make as the switcher.

so does that mean it's a SoftMetal Video Server?

with OverDrive?

We are using the SMS server but no Overdrive is needed as the switcher directly supports VDCP. Overdrive would be needed if you are trying to integrate more complex rundown solutions. But the Vision switcher can recall clips and CG pages and audio boards and can also recall Layouts for the Miranda with the right software options without another server.

I think what people were wondering is: what is that screen by the vision mixer? the one on the arm encased in the metal box?

At what point are you seeing a metal box? At roughly 20 minutes in, Dave is sitting in front of the switcher, there is the monitor fed by the Miranda on top, then what looks like a status display for the DDR, then a status monitor for either the audio board or the Ross. Many audio boards and switchers have such displays. Some use touch screens, others use soft knobs and menus.

The metal monitor with the knobs is for the ross vision 1 switcher. Its the touch screen control panel that is used for the higher end functions of the switcher.
