the modded 360's allow you to backup your games and play them which is good if you have kids cd's scratch easily.

Haha...I used to cheat on xbox live all the time. It was so much fun and I learned alot of what I know about computers from modding things. I modded Halo 2 and still do every once in a while. It was good times hearing little kids tell me I am a loser with no life. Fun fun.

I've only modded my PS1 and I have an HDloader for my PS2. It sounded like a great idea at the time, saving all that money by getting free games, but it really took a lot of the value out of the experience. When I fork over 50 bucks for a game I choose wisely and pick one I'll get my monies worth out of. When they're just a download away I don't appreciate them, and I think it's made me get extremely bored with videogames in general.

Are you refering to Xbox 360s with the firmware hack? I know they cannot ban 360s with a mod chip such as the NME-360 as the mod chip goes dormant when and original copy of a game is inserted.

Anybody who will purposely void their warranty to play a few burned (ie stolen) games has more money than sense.
Considering I've heard more "I turned my console into a brick trying to mod it!" stories than anything else, I say for the money you spent replacing the console you could have bought all the games you ripped off anyway.
As a parent, if I'd bought the console for my kids I'd be seriously pissed if they turned it into a brick. They've voided the warranty so there's no way to replace it, even if something legitimately goes wrong with it.
Considering all the dvd drive problems the first one had, there's no ****ing way I'd mod a 360.
So considering all those factors, I say you get what you deserve when you mod something that expensive.

I 100% agree here. Back in the day I never let my PS1 be moded for that exact purpose. I used a spring and one original copy to play my shady games I bought in china town or the legitimately bought import games, and in all honesty there are people who mod their systems for the purpose of getting imported games, which is another reason I find region blocking of consoles and any form of media to be outright stupid and bad business.

Just to let you guys know, Gamestop is starting Halo 3 pre-sells today and Wii demos may be in stores as early as Monday I've heard.

You would have to be a moron to brick a 360 with a NME360 mod chip. 5 wires, soldering gun and solder. Not hard. I had it opened modded and closed in 30 minutes.

You obviously haven't seen people over-cook solder connections like I have.

Nobody said it was easy - nobody who doesn't know how to solder should attempt that type of mod.
I modded my original Xbox with a soldered chip, and bumped the HDD up to something much larger.
I don't go online, never used XBox Live, so why did I risk bricking my Xbox? I am lazy. I loaded up all my games onto the HDD, and play them straight from there. My original games see the inside of the CD drive once, then never again.
People mod consoles for different reasons. I can see why MS bans modded consoles from Live - there are was to cheat, and nothing ruins the experience more for everyone else than people running cheats. However, new maps, and weapons, and stuff like that can also be run from a modded box - and banning them degrades the enjoyment people can have with the system. I think a better method would be to flag users as running a modded box, then allow users to choose if they want to play with someone who can potentially cheat. Of course this does nothing to address MS' biggest issue which is using pirated games.
