I can definitly see this thread getting moved/deleted but oh well thought I would try anywho. Any MMA fans here, if so are you watching UFC 81 tonight ?

Here are my picks for the main card:
Sylvia over nog by dec
lesnar over mir by dec (this one is tough to call for me, if Mir is in shape this could be a quick sub and done)
Marquardt over Horn via sub to strikes

Dont really have any picks for the other fights. Please, discuss.....

Eh, if it gets deleted, it gets deleted.

I'm interested in the outcome of the Lesnar-Mir fight. I think a lot of people don't give Lesnar the credit he deserves as being a more than capable wrestler. The guy was the NCAA Hwt. champ for pete's sake. Maybe more than once, I can't remember for sure. So he can certainly hold his own if the fight goes to the ground.

I think Mir's a good candidate for him to fight though, in order to see if he's the real deal because Mir's a very accomplished grappler in his own right. And much more versed than Lesnar in submissions. I think it should be an interesting fight.

On a side note, I was at the University of Minnesota when Lesnar was winning that National Championship. I saw him around campus a few times, and I can pretty safely say I've never seen a guy I'd less like to get into a fight with. I'm a big guy, but Lesnar's an 8% body fat, 260 lb. kind of big. He's just a beast.

Nog over Sylvia, Sub.
Mir over Lesnar, Sub.
Marquart over Horn by KO.

The rest of this card isn't that interesting to me.

Not gonna delete it. If people are interested, they can talk and it'll stay up here.

Fun fact, I did a giant research project on Ultimate Fighting for a Documentary Research class I had in college. I remember almost nothing.

Not much of a fan, Josh? I love it myself. Having practiced various forms of fighting for, well, most of my life.

Yeah I definitely see it like this:
Lesnar - Physical, Athletic, and Cardio Advantage
Mir - Technique, and Experience Advantage

Basically we agree !

So if Mir doesnt sub him in the first round and a half I would say its all Brock.

Nog over Sylvia, Sub.
Mir over Lesnar, Sub.
Marquart over Horn by KO.

I made the call of the first two, but Im not confident. These fights seem like they could definitely go either way. If you saw the weigh in Marquart looks to be in much better shape. Absolutely agree that the rest of the card is meh.

I've met Sylvia. Believe it or not, despite his media image, he isn't an asshole. He's a really sweet and emotional guy. That said, he has trouble against big guys who bring a ton of technique to bear on the ground. Nog is, maybe, the best grappling heavy weight in the world.

I'm picking Mir because I like the guy, I'll be honest. He has a ton of talent, but his motorcycle wreck cost him a lot of his athleticism. I've rooted for him to come back ever since, I'm just hoping.

Marquardt is a great fighter, but he's stuck in the same place Franklin is - second fiddle to teh Spider. He doesn't have the skill needed to beat that Brazilian wrecking machine. Never will.

Mir wins by submission. Not too surprising, if Mir was gonna win I figure that's how it was gonna go down.

3 for 3, only missed the Marquardt KO. He subbed his man instead.

I hope Lesnar sticks around though. He kinda got tossed in the deep end right off the bat. I really think he could work himself into a truly devastating Hwt.

Your picks owned mine. The crazy thing is that Lesnar and Sylvia were winning then bam submission.

If he can catch his technique up to his physical gifts he will be a serious threat. Hope he sticks around too he sounded upbeat on the post fight interview.

That's how Nog always wins. He's beaten a dozen great HWt that way. He takes his abuse, suckers them in and then breaks them.

Yeah I have definitly seen Nog take his lumps before and come back, but I just thought Tims power would be the difference. Both of your picks may have been the winners but if you looked at the guys after the fight 9 out of 10 people would say that Lesnar and Sylvia looked like they had just won.

Nah. Tim doesn't have the power that Mirko had when he was at his best. Mirko actually broke Nog's orbital bone in a fight... and still lost. I guess, after getting hit by a truck when he was a kid humans just can't make the pain necessary to take Nog out. :D Who looks worse doesn't determine who wins the fight, as analysts like to say. You have to imagine 'If this figt continued to its ultimate conclusion, who would have won...' and anytime you are in a situation where you would be helpless or have a broken limb or, well, dead... you lose.

Not saying Tim is a powerhouse, its just in the last few fights I have seen nog in, (especially in the UFC) he hasnt looked as impressive as he did prior. I am just worried he is going the way of the old prizefighters. He is taking soo much damage in every fight and looks slower, and sloppy. Not to say he isnt effective, i wanted Nog to win, just wasnt sure he could do it.

Wasnt saying looking pretty earns you a win I definitly thought the fights ended well (no controversy). Just saying Mir and Nog took a hell of a pounding before slapping a sub on.

On another note did anyone (or you Zombox, cause we seem to be the only two in this thread) think that the Steve Mazzagatti point deduction in the Mir-Lesnar fight was excessive. It almost looked to me that he was stepping in to stop the fight, then he got in close and was like "OMG, Franks alive" and needed a reason to step in so he was like "ummm, you there dont hit the back of his head".
