I stumbled upon a way to stop your current event in Burnout Paradise (not restart it however). If you just stop moving for a few seconds it stops your current event (which can be very frustrating if it happens on accident… near the end of a race…). You can tell when the current event is canceled by watching the map in the bottom right corner of your screen. It will reset when the event is canceled.
I like the Free-Roam feel of the game, but I agree with Dan, I think the game would be greatly improved by having a “Restart Event” option and a “Jump to Event” option, but the developers (Criterion) didn’t want any loading screens so they “removed” these.
They should also have a feature that blocks off certain streets during races making it seem more like a designed course.

You can also cancel an event by going into "showtime" mode by pressing L1 + R1.

That defeats the whole purpose of free and open racing theme. The whole point is- "You are here, you need to get there. Good luck!". How you get there is all up to you. Several times I've taken a wrong turn and ended up going perpendicular and further away from the finish. But with effective use of shortcuts I was able to make a comeback and win almost everytime.

That's the way you're supposed to stop an event...said it in the demo, says it in the manual, etc.

JchaosRS - Not for all the races, just make it an additional option/racing type
damnedeyez - Who reads the Manual!? :-) I still think they should have put the option to stop the current event in the menu screen, or at least a note that tells you how to stop an event.

bingo.
even when i go the wrong way, sometimes i can get right back into the action, as long as it wasnt within a mile or so of the finish.

Burnout Paradise was such a refreshing change for the series. I'm loving the whole explore the city and cruise around aspect.
As for people complaining that taking a wrong turn ruins a race and that the streets are not clearly marked out with giant neon arrows like in the past, true it can be frustrating. But as for every single racing game in the past, to be really good at them, you had to learn the courses and know exactly how to take each corner, when to apply the breaks and when to step on the gas. Burnout paradise just takes it one step further and to be really good at it you have to learn what roads to take and when.
