So, Blair has just informed me I was left with the task of starting the new GD thread. Apparently, I missed this notice. My apologies.

My sister and I were reminiscing about childhood cartoons. Top three cartoons as a kid, go!

Every Saturday Morning I watched X-MEN
In Third grade I really liked Gundam
I used to hang out in my old LCS (IT CLOSED and I moved, unrelated btw) and afterwards I would go home and watch Justice League.

Yes! Voltron and Transformers! My cousin had all of the Voltron toys. I mentioned this before but I begged my mom to buy me Bumblebee when I was younger. After watching the movie she was like "wasn't that the toy you begged me to get you when you were 6?" :)

Batman: TAS and Gargoyles take my top two spots. Not sure about the third one. Probably something I watched to please my sister. Animaniacs, or Arthur, or Magic School Bus. Watched a lot of the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon as well, but not as devoutly. Just a good alternative to everything else on before I went to school.

Did anyone else notice that it's suddenly June 2, 2008? I'm not complaining as I was sick of cold weather anyways. :)

Top Three Cartoons:

Batman: AMS
Justice League Unlimited
X-Men
...and because it can't be left off of any list, despite limitations, The Tick.

By the way, when the hell are the original X-Men cartoons going to be released on DVD? I would buy those in a heartbeat!

I recall it being quite stinky...but that could be because I thought the original was so good, that this one just couldn't hold a candle to it.

Two reasons it makes more sense:
a) Smallest time period to longest time period. Why change the middle number more than you change the front number?
b) Largest to smallest general importance. Looking at a calendar you always know what year it is, generally know what month it is, and barely know what day it is. Should be ordered as such.

As mentioned earlier, a little OCD. I'm hoping that eventually this will catch on. Sometimes I forget the rest of the world doesn't do it, and I do things like put it in thread titles.

The motherfucking TICK! I loved that cartoon! Oh. My gosh.

Batman: TAS and X-men are my list just because those were my watch every rerun just love to death shows.

Otherwise I watched a toooon of cartoons so I really can't make a third. Besides, I have a bad memory so the time periods all run together. I loved animaniacs. And there was this one cartoon... with a dude with an exclamation mark on his chest, but I can't remember the name (enter controversy about being "inspired" by madman atomic). That show was brilliant.

Super-friends (various incarnations)
Spider-man and his Amazing Friends
Dungeons & Dragons

But I also remember watching lots of Transformers and GI Joe and Voltron and Robotech at various times in syndication...I was probably a bit older for many of those cartoons...like early teens...?

1, M.A.S.K. I had all the toys and I think T-bob is still lying around here somewhere.

2, He-man. The original with the catchy theme tune:
"I've got the power,
To pick up a flower.
It takes me an hour..or sooooo"

3, My little Pon...er...I mean, it's a tie between 'Jayce and The Wheeled Warriors' and 'Ulysses 31'.

I think we're probably about the same age. I'm 36. I remember Thundarr the Barbarian, He-Man...

Also really enjoyed Space Ghost and The Herculoids, but those were re-runs from the early 70s.

They replay Superfriends all the time on Boomerang and, although I remember them fondly, they were really absolutely atrocious.

My kids really like Boomerang so I watch a lot of cartoons with them. I recently saw my favorite one again. I hadn't seen it since I was a little kid. It's still funny.

It's the one where a farmer gets a little goat and the goat eats everything in sight. He eats the majority of his house. He eats food out of the farmer's hand and chews all the way up his arm. It ends with him eating the moon. It's so fucking funny. Completely absurd. My daughter loves it too.

I remember what cartoon you're talking about!

You never know what's going to come on there. I check from time-to-time for Thundarr, Herculoids, and Space Ghost. Right now my kids are hooked on Superpowers re-runs. A really jarring experience is to watch one of those Darkseid episodes and then watch him in JL or JLU. Also, it's amazing how much DC really wanted Firestorm to be their next superstar. In the early 80s they featured him in the cartoon, gave him his own series, and gave him a starring role in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Too bad it didn't pan out. What is he doing now anyway? Is Firestorm even Ronnie Raymond anymore?

I mean Jace and the Wheeled Warriors?!? So awesome!

And M.A.S.K also great!

For me it was probably:

Thundercats, (and the brief awesomeness that was Silverhawks)
Transformers,
and

Talespin. (but that's probably because I have fond memories of a friend, in keyboarding class [yeah yeah I know  ], creating a ten minute macro of the Talespin theme song complete with a plane flying around, only to start it, have the teacher walk over and have to sit there letting it play out while she got angrier and angrier. (and I thought about putting this in the Wire thread, but I don't want to catch any spoilers by accident, and since it's not really about the wire...)

I'm into tech week of my production of No Exit right now, and last night, after rehearsal my wife and I sat down to begin season 3 of the Wire, and I just couldn't stay focused! Everytime the show turned to the bureaucracy my mind wandered back to No Exit...and normally I love that stuff.

When I tried to read some comics I couldn't enjoy them either, again too much mind drift. Jean-Paul Sartre is over-whelming me!!!!

The Power Team (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Team)?

As for my list...
As a kid:
GI JOE is far and away number one.
I also liked Voltron and Gummi Bears a lot.

As an adult:
Transformers: Beast Wars ranks as one of the best written TV shows ever made. Justice League Unlimited is a fanboy's wet dream(as is pretty much anything Bruce Timm touches). How can there be a cartoon list that doesn't mention the Simpsons?

Jeez, there was a big shoot-out in the San Fernando Valley, right near where my son goes to school. Apparently, a couple SWAT officers were killed, they tear-gassed the house, and the house caught on fire.

I didn't know any of this until I pulled up to my son's school. Down the street to the left were swarms of cops. I turned right to pull into school, and I saw a large sign stating "School Closed." The teachers were waiting at the front to let us know the school was closed today because of the "incident."

yeah, it's a little strange. I mean, it's a private school, and generally safe. And the incident...it's not like it's rampant gang activity or anything. A crazy guy killed his family and shot some cops. So...isolated incident.

But.

Sadly, the fact that it was only 4 people didn't give me much hope for their cause.

I am slow to catch with things in the US, but when I do....

QUIZ CHALLENGE for GOOGLE MONKEYS -

I just found out that two people who are playing a couple that are considered a pretty "hot and popular couple" on TV are very big comic book fans. Not the couple they play, but the people who play the couple.

So, your challenge, if you choose to search, is: who is the couple, who are they? Your hints -

1) Both are young and attractive
2) One is brunette, one is blond
3) One's choice for "second dream career" is: comic book writer
4) The other's choice for "second dream career" is: comic book artist
5) Both prefer super hero comics, based on their comments
6) One listed Newsarama.com and Comicbookresouces.com as two of their favorite websites (sadly iFanboy is not on that list, note to management - you might want to get on that)
7) The same one mentioned the Death of Captain America as what they liked best, and the Return of Captain Marvel as what they did not like much at all
8) Aside from the roles they play, they share comics on the set
9) One (the one that would like to be an artist) just gave an Alan Moore book to the other
10) Their mentioning of their like for comics has been greeted with a great deal of positive reaction by their mostly young and quite enthusiastic fanbase

Your answer must be:
Two sets of four letters

If your curiousity is peaked, have at it. I have withheld one major clue, can't make this too easy, as you all are too good with the search engines...

You got it...
The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 (Title 23 U.S.C. §158) was passed on July 17, 1984 by the United States Congress as a mechanism whereby all states would become thereafter required to legislate and enforce the age of 21 years as a minimum age for purchasing and publicly possessing alcoholic beverages. Under the Federal Aid Highway Act, a state not enforcing the minimum age would be subjected to a ten percent decrease in its annual federal highway apportionment.
While this act did not outlaw the consumption of alcoholic beverages by those under 21 years of age, some states extended its provisions into an outright ban. However, most states still permit "underage" consumption of alcohol in some circumstances. In some states, no restriction on private consumption is made, while in others, consumption is only allowed in specific locations, in the presence of consenting and supervising family members, and/or during religious occasions.
Pressure from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) was attributed with passage of the bill.

It just seemed to reinforce what everyone says about Apple. They don't invent things, they just make them all work together.

Also, the Zune isn't "officially" available in Canada until the spring, and I'm not sure I want to dive into this from Ebay. Warranty or being able to play with it first is definitely necessary here. I'm trying to see if there's a good alternative to an iPod out there, but there just isn't. I love my iPods. The Zen and the Sansa work great, but the software is non-existant, or shitty.

Damn. So close.

Close, but one person missing, that's a 50% miss....:p

Actually, yes, his character, but now its 2 characters with the As The World Turns (ATWT) kiss (which kind of takes two, usually) at over 1,000,000 views on YouTube and climbing. The whole NUKE phenomenon (that's Luke + Noah = NUKE, as the fans call them) seems to be the only thing keeping ATWT interesting for soap viewers since late last summer. The YouTube angle is funny - fans upload the NUKE storyline, but cut most of the other stuff, and CBS is not sure if its gaining ratings or losing advertising. The fans basically say - get better writers for the show overall, and it won't be a problem.

Since both young, attractive actors (apparently both straight), hardly your stereotypical picture of comic book geeks, have readily "come out of the closet" and proclaimed their real life love of comic books, this has only added more to the NUKE charm effect on tons of NUKE loving blogs. I'm guessing, but the ATWT and NUKE fan demographic is probably not this demographic, but I am only guessing.

BTW, who watches soap operas? Oh, mostly young women. Yeah. Ok. Any interest in young women on this forum? Like women that maybe have not "come out" about certain things they like to avoid scorn from guys?

Basically, they are seen as two young hot actors playing a young hot couple, and what do they do between shooting scenes? Talk about comic books. And a straight guy calls iFanboy from a bar and asks if he should "come out" about his "comic book orientation" to the girl he likes, who may actually fit the demographic that adores NUKE - am I the only one that sees the irony here?

Here is the line I would suggest to "test the waters" with the ladies -

"Wow. I don't get it. Can you explain this whole NUKE thing? I hear tons of fans are actually girls, is that true?"
(then)
"Yeah, I heard they were both real big comic books fans, the real actors, that is..."
(wait for the reaction, that's your test, if it goes well then...)
"Those guys, the real actors, actually like stuff guys like, but I know some other stuff that you might like if you're interested...."

OK, of the following comic book heroes, which ones can we say:

"We are 100% sure that this character was not created by two Jewish guys from New York."(17 words total)

The List:
Galactus, Batman, Captain America, The Spirit, Batman, Sue Richards, Superman, The Hulk, Ant-Man, or Spider-Man?

The Correct Answer Must Be Phrased:
"We are 100% sure that this character was created by (fill in the blank, must be five words)."

Factual accuracy is also essential, no speculation allowed, or disputes about who actually created the character.

For the sake of clarity, the following person is not to be considered:

(from wikipedia)
Julius "Julie" Schwartz (June 19, 1915 – February 8, 2004) was a comic book and pulp magazine editor, and a science fiction agent and prominent fan. He was born in the Bronx, New York. He is best known as a longtime editor at DC Comics, where at various times he was primary editor over the company's flagship superheroes, Superman and Batman...In the 1950s he oversaw the revival of superheroes such as the Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman and the Atom, which led to the Silver Age of comic books. This revival has been cited as an inspiration for the transformation of Marvel Comics in the 1960s. The Schwartz-edited line of titles was regarded by many as being more creative and dynamic than other DC titles of the time, notably the Superman line edited by Mort Weisinger.

Allow me to suggest the likely unpopular opinion that young people, on the whole, are not the most responsible drinkers, and while it's irritating for the responsible ones, there's a good chance that this annoying law probbaly saved some lives?

I'm not saying I agree with prohibiting the few from the excesses of the many is a good idea, but it's certainly one point of view.

Either way, we should probably move this to the General discussion.

Either way, we should probably move this to the General discussion.I 100% agree with that. I think 18 or 19 is a better line for that responsibility than 21, but I definitely see where it's coming from. When I started talking about this, I didn't realize it would become a "why isn't it lower?" discussion. I totally understand why it isn't. I know a lot of people under 21 who I don't think should be able to drink.

My only thing is that I know the older you make that limit, the more serious underage drinking becomes. When it's 18 like here, you drink a bit at 16 or 17, but generally don't mind the wait. I've never had a fake ID, and don't know many who have, because you'll be legal soon enough after you start drinking. But, when it's 21, you are generally out partying a lot more. And outside of a bar when an underage kid drinks, they're definitely going to drink a hell of a lot more.

That's not really a good reason to lower it though, that's just a sad fact.

Holy crap! The beards must stay till the video show, gents!

Plus, love Conor's Hugh Hefner impression sipping the wine. As always he's got the class.

Only this time, it's real.

Based on facial expressions it would appear that:

Conor is working on the new iFanboy Joke Generator
Ron is working on the iFanboy Advanced Calculus Brain Twister Randomizer
Josh is watching video of his arch nemesis winning an award

Someone needs to get Josh a drink. It's like an old school "One of these things is not like the other, One of these things just doesn't belong" Sesame Street bit.

Indeed they are.

I loaded the page, went ooh video feed and clicked play on each one

four minutes later, I was still watching

I like Conor's framed issue of Criminal

When I first refreshed the page and saw the three live feeds I was like, "Is this...permanent? Cuz that would be weird."

Imagine video of the guys going about their day, following them to relevant locations: the comic shop, a convention, a podcast recording.

And then to other locations: Grocery store. Dates. Jury duty.

Fortunately it's just a fun feature for the placeholder.

What the hell has my life become?

It's a web 2.0 world, and we're just living in it.

It's either pure craziness or genius. I haven't decided which yet.

The WeinerMobile is down! I repeat, The WeinerMobile is down!

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/02/wienermobile.jpg

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile may be the most unique and recognizable vehicle on American roads, but even a 7,000-pound hot dog can spin out of control on a patch of ice. The 27-foot-long rolling tribute to pig lips and chicken necks lost its footing and spun into an embankment on highway 15 in Pennsylvania on its way to Penn State for a recruiting visit. Neither of the two women riding in the flailing frankfurter were hurt in the incident, and a tow truck was able to get the over-sized sausage back onto the road.

We're not sure how fast the two women were driving the Wienermobile when the spin-out occured, but this incident only proves that even giant wieners can benefit from stability control.

On the Cuatro.

You may as well ask me to play harpsichord.

the Audi Quattro?

Nope. It's a Spanish Guitar. Famous in it's Puerto Rican variation (http://www.musicofpuertorico.com/index.php/instruments/cuatro/) among Classical Guitarist.

They look like this...

...and come in 4, 6, 8 and 10 string variations. Fast playing style requires dexterity and endurance.

This is what it is supposed sound like....
