how does google make money beause they don't charge for stuff (besides google earth and google shirts)right?

They are now one odf the worlds largest advertising companies through their Adsense keyword advertising that you see on the side of web pages.
They also sell dedicated hardware (http://www.google.com/enterprise/gsa/onebox.html) based search engines for large companies.
Its just like McDonalds doesn't make their money from selling hamburgers - they are the largest single realestate investment company in the world :)

I thought they made their money off fat farms and heart surgery clinics.

haha, definitely... it's sad that people don't realise that though. Ray Kroc has actually said in numerous interviews that he's in the real estate biz, not the hamburger biz.

Oh dear, Google has their hand in far more than you realize. AdSense is HUGE. Marketing and investing is where the money is, and that's where Google is.
