Has anyone checked out this Internet-only Star Trek series, Star Trek:New Voyages (http://www.startreknewvoyages.com/)? It's a continuation of the original Star Trek's 5 year mission. All the characters are there, Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones, etc. It's shot on real sets built as close to the original as possible (not on a green screen as some other fan-produced productions - not that there's anything wrong with that!! ;) )

The first episode, "IN HARM'S WAY," is okay (I couldn't get over Kirk's hair), but the following episodes are so much better. The cast & crew really have come far in their performance and production. The special effects are as good as some broadcast shows, imho.

They've even been able to get some original cast members to guest star: Walter Koenig (Pavel Chekov), George Takei (Hikaru Sulu), and Denise Crosby (Dr. Jenna Yar). Majel Roddenberry even reprises her role as the computer voice.

A knock on STNV is the length of releasing new episodes. They are in post-production on a 2-part episode (episode 4 & 5 with Denise Crosby), but it may be awhile before it is released due to the amount of special effects.

Hope you all enjoy! Thanks for reading this long post :D

p.s. - I'm not affiliated with the cast/crew/etc. Just a big fan of their work!

Jerry

It's a good fan film. However, some of the acting is pretty atrocious. They make up for it with surprisingly good writing and production values. The last two with Chekhov and Sulu respectively were particularly effective. As could be expected, the most moving scenes feature Koenig and Takei themselves. There's a particularly good scene at the end of the lasted episode. I won't spoil the surprise. But, it is as good as anything from the four official follow-up series.

On another note, if you like your Star Trek Fan films with a side of modern lifestyle. The fan film series, "Star Trek: the Hidden Frontier" has some surprisingly good writing. The acting does evolve as many professional quality actors get involved. But, the primary use of green screens and virtual sets can be pretty distracting. However, the epic space battle are worth the price of admission. And, there are more than a few genuinely thrilling moments scattered about.

"The Hidden Frontier" does contain some unambiguous homosexually themed sub-plots. Many fans consider the dearth of these social topic in the official series to be a egregious oversight. This may add to the allure or distract, depending on how you feel about such things. Overall, It is a meritorious effort.

Agreed about the acting, but it's gotten somewhat better. Especially with the guest stars. The cast seem to "step up" their efforts (or maybe I don't notice it as much).

Episode 4 & 5 brings in Captain Kirk's nephew, Ensign Peter Kirk, & a really controversial story.

I never heard of this before and watching and I am impressed so far esp getting George takei to revive his role.
But Man Scotty sucks ..too bad he was always my fave character in TOS.
Thanks for this I have a new star trek fix and being a HUUUUUGE trek nerd this help fill a void. :D

I never liked TOS, so this New Voyager thing isn't for me. I however did check out this show, or, at least, Odyssey. I first downloaded the Hidden Frontier thing but the production values and writing didn't seem that good, at least in season 1. They do suggest checking out season 6 and 7 first, but I'm the kind of person who needs to see it from the beginning, and I don't think I'd enjoy the first few seasons. That said though Odyssey is excellent! The pilot episode was so thrilling, might just be a better pilot episode than any of the official Star Trek series. The characters are awesome too, I found that by the end of the episode I actually cared about most of them, that's pretty impressive considering it was just one episode. I thought it was heartbreaking when Ro (I think that's his name) and his boyfriend got split up.:(

The second episode was good too, although I liked the older Ro better. Though the new one is kinda foxy;)

Hope new episodes will come out sort of regularly, would be sucky to wait 6+ months per episode. Even though it's completely understandable it would take that long, seeing as it's a fan project.
