We may cry for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. The Devil May Cry for PS3 and Xbox 360. But Liam Neeson most certainly doesn't cry in the new trailer for Taken. Plus, the Star Trek Tour!

The reason for the installation of DMC4 on the ps3 are the loading screens, as Jeff pointed out.
But from what i understand the difference is waaay bigger than 1-2 seconds.
I read at a forum that the difference at one time was 7 seconds on the ps3 vs 20 seconds on the xbox 360.

Regarding "installing" games on a console:
The current incarnation of this installation mumbo jumbo blows.
If so many games are going to have such large(5GB+) installs AND the consoles are going to try and sell you downloadable games and other media, then they need to ship consoles with bigger friggin hard drives.
I think they should rethink their strategy. Being able to purchase a game, open the packaging, put the disc in the console and start playing immediately seems to be pretty important to a lot of people(myself included). Certainly with their magic blue laz0rz they could find some way to allow you to pop the disc in and start playing immediately and live with longer load times until the game can finish installing, which it should be doing in the background while you are playing.
Also, if I'm going to have to manage a disc AND be burdened with up to 25% of my HDD space(depending on which SKU you have) being occupied, there better be some huge improvement in load times or gameplay or something. FFS.

Come on guys, Ninja Gaiden wasn't that hard....
The reason for the install is simple. The DVD drive on the 360 can stream data many times faster than the Blue Ray drive in the PS3 can. (edit - well, several times faster) Remember the first few generations of DVD Rom drives compared to todays drives? To compensate, they install a lot of data on the hard drive of the PS 3.
The other technique that has been used is to put some texture data redundantly in many places on the Blue Ray Disc, so the read head does not have to go very far. But this still does not make up for the slowness of the data transfer. They used this on The Orange Box and in videos I saw, the 360 still loaded way faster.
Sony has got to get a handle on this or before you know it, you will not only have to take 20 minutes to install a new game, but you will also have to constantly be deleting older games to make room for new ones. Then you'll never want to go back and play older games that you had to delete and will have to install yet again.
Sony put the Blue Ray in for a bullet point that the 360 does not have, but it has bitten them with increased console cost, decreased speed and now losing Hard Drive space.
Given the choice, I'd opt for the for the non-install version. How much will it suck in a years time, when you've had to delete DMC4 to make room for the latest and greatest game, and your buddy (Or worse yet, a grrl gamer "Friend") sees you have a copy of DMC4 and wants to play it on your system, but you tell them that they'll have to wait 25 minutes while you re-install it? But if you had the 360 version you'd be playing in the time it takes for the disc to load. There has to be a better way. Drakes did it and the load times were not sooo horrible were they?

I hate it (HATE IT) when games make you rewatch unskippable cut-scenes after you die. I remember that issue being a totally maddening experience in DMC3.
Did they get rid of that feature in DMC4?
P.S.
heavenly sword or DMC4? any suggestions?

Aj beat me to it. It's the drives speeds.
As for the 360 load times. It's only a few seconds. No longer then load times on any other game.

So, my boyfriend isn't home yet and I'm not allowed to watch the show without him but ...
I had to watch the beginning! I waited as long as I could but I knew you used my background so I got impatient.
(Great intro, btw. Best one ever!)
Anyway, thank you so much for being so nice when you discussed the background! I love you guys. :D
Dan, wow - I am just bowled over that you liked that one so much. It means a lot to me.

Hey guys as always wicked episode.
I thought how you described that movie was pretty radiculous. I was in a forum and found an indie movie that has a similar feel to it. Thought you guys might like to know about it. It's called "A marvelous Life"
Quoted from the forum writer
"A new, "microbudget" feature film who's protagonist is a man with Asperger's"
"The film is part character study, part fantasy. Theo having recently lost his home and having no place to go, encounters Oliver, a struggling actor who works as a sales man for a living. Theo is fascinated with the 1950's sci-fi thriller, "The World of Dr. Marr." Unable to cope with the realities of life, Theo enters the world of Dr. Marr, in his mind, literally entering the film and becoming part of it - and inexplicably, taking Oliver with him. As Theo and Oliver struggle their way through Dr. Marr's world, fantasy mirrors real life as the problems they face in the fantasy world are reflections of their struggles in the real world. Ultimately, Theo must face Dr. Marr himself if he is ever to be free from his fantasy world and able to learn to cope with the real world."
While still in production thought it might be worth putting on the radar.

Big fan of the show here. I've seen every episode and finally decided to join the forums.
The intro kind of threw me at first. When I saw the close up of Dan putting on the sweat bands I thought I'd never figure out what movie it was. But as soon as I heard the "why are smiling" line, I recognized it instantly. Awesome scene from an awesome movie. I always thought the TRS guys could do the scene with the iocane powder, but their take on the swash buckling scene was even better. Except the minor nitpick that there was no third person sitting around watching.
Also, the return of the Swedish guy was rad. Just like all of Steve's contributions to the show.

Am I the only one who thinks that if it had been the 360 with the install and faster loading screens Alex would have been like "OMG that is awesome!, i hate loading screens!! i want to marry Microsoft and have 360 children!!".
Personally I couldn't care less about the console war but I think his love for Microsoft shines through a bit to much sometimes.
Other then that, awesome episode!
Edit: grebnethcarts, Switzerland (where that guy was from) is not Sweden :)
Loved the energy of this episode boys. As some have said, giddy and awkwardly funny. I wasn't going to see The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, but I will now lobby for someone to go with me this weekend (is it out in full release??). Your description reminded me of The Sea Inside (Mar Adentro) starring Javier Bardem. I loved that movie. It was sad, funny, and thought provoking all at once.
The console install discussion was sort of strange, because installing games should be something PC gamers are used to. If it only happens once, it wouldn't matter to me if I liked the game. I can see how it would be a huge negative if you were pressed for HD space though. Like others have said, the drive issue with the Bluray players will be fixed eventually, and I definitely don't think that this is a direction that console games will take.
I can't wait for the TRS Awards!

You are half right. The DVD drive is faster on certain parts of the DVD, on other sections it is slower than the Blu-Ray drive. The Blu-Ray is one speed no matter where on the disc.
Capcom is solely to blame for this install they want to use a proprietary development software where they develop for both systems on a PC platform then port it to the consoles. DMC4 is the first game they made like this.Games like Drakes have small footprint and better graphics and levels. Sloppy design leads to a sloppy system.
I agree that this is a bad trend in gaming and I have heard "Hot Shots Golf " may have the same install. Also Monster Hunter Portable 2" on the PSP has this as an option. I think it should always be optional.
"Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind" is my pick for a date movie.

Could someone message me and let me know what the intro was from? I've been racking my brain all day and I've got nothing.
Good episode. The install on the PS3 would kill me because for me the desire to play a game comes and goes. I would have been pissed to come home throw a game in and sit and wait for the download. Yikes. I want a PS3 but I've never heard of this before. I agree with Alex on that it would totally bother me.
I definitely want to check out the movie. When it was nominated I think we all gave a collective "huh?"

I don't think you have to install it every time you want to play it, I might be wrong seeing as I have no firsthand experience. But I know that all the games I play off my HDD on my ps2 load much quicker than off the original discs. Makes the one time install much more worth it.

Although I do look forward to it, I think it would be better off if it was made as a drama along the lines of Butterfly effect because I liked the 2 seconds of his conflict with his father that I saw in the trailer.
I'm pretty sure it's a sci-fi action film, and it'll probably have that glimmer of oh-so-tantalizing depth right under it's shallow exterior.

Hey all,
A rad show once again (as the title kind of promises - there would be law suits a plenty if it didn't deliver, I'm sure).
One thing that hit me right at the end; Jeff makes a point of thanking all the happy couples and how awesome it is that there are people who watch it together. This is all very nice, proper and fitting given that it's Valentines day tomorrow but....
I am sure that I'm not the only person who felt a bit sad at this point for not having someone to watch it with..... :(

Great Episode, The opening homage was perfect...as usual.
Being few years older than you three, my wife and I are fans to the original Star Trek. We were planning to visit the exhibit when it came east. But, we're even more excited now.
TRS has made it into our actual prime-time line-up of shows to watch together after kids are in bed. Thanks to the writers strike...
Before I met my wife, I had a rule about not seeing movies for the few first dates. I preferred an activity that involved more discussion. However, I broke this rule on the first date with my future wife. During a very pleasant light dinner, I discovered that she liked movies, crime drama and Sean Connery. So, I took her to see "Rising Sun." (It was 1993) It's not really a date movie, but I could tell by her reaction that she wasn't a chick-flick-chick. It's still one of our favorites. BTW, our second date involved a trip to the video store where we went isle-by-isle and she pointed out her favorite movies. She's still the number-one person I look to for for opinion. You can learn a lot about a person that way.
However, competing with your spouse for XBOX 360 or Wii time is a little bit of a drag...
Good date movie... "Ella Enchanted"

Just wanted to say one thing about the games segment. Totally PS3 Bashing. First off I love this show, always watch and will continue to watch it, but please guys when you guys are talking about a certain console at least speak with some knowledge. I mean Alex was just yelling about how a one time install broke the game, Uncharted graphics are muddy all of a sudden? Uncharted was one of the most hight praised PS3 game both for gameplay and graphics! I mean do you like anything that is the PS3? This is the same person who said Motorstorm looked a 64 game...just saying.
Anyways love all you guys keep up the good work.

I don't think anyone else posted this yet, but: I found it amusing that Dan gave Alex hell about calling The Eye a Japanese movie and then said it was Thai...but IMDB and the credits of the remake say it is Chinese.
An episode full of RADness, as always!!!
The directors Pang brothers are from Hong Kong but made their directorial debut in Thailand. Parts of the film were shot in Thailand too.
It's a pan-asian production but technically I will say it's a Hong Kong movie.

just finished watching the latest episode. i was great as usual, but i must say that you guys are living dangerously with some of the racial comments made during the show.
with the recent public lashing that kelly tilghman got for her "lynching" remark on the golf channel, you guys need to be extra careful with what you say. chances are derogatory asian comments won't make headlines like black remarks, but you should be careful. there is a difference between keeping it relaxed/natural and crass.

HaHa very funny. Yeah, I date your mom, actually... wait, what?! Who said that?! :D
and I heard "mantrum" in my head when I typed man and tantrum. It seemed like the obvious offspring. lol

I have a big complaint about the episode. It isn't in the mp3 feed! People like me with non-video iPods listen too! What happened?

Dan, you're dead to me. This movie had to be the biggest steam of British bulldog turd ever created. I saw this with my wife and mother-in-law and, I swear, I would have preferred to have been having back-to-back colonoscopies. Awake. The Richard Curtis formula is so stale.

Given the Valentine theme, I just want to say that my wife and I watch the show religiously. I was so surprised that she was so into when I tentatively introduced her to it. Of course it could be the Jeff Cannata effect. Damn you, sir, and your sensitive ways.

Me too, dumping the MP3 would be a terrible! About 80% of the time I have to listen to the MP3 instead of watching, so dropping this format would mean a lot less TRS for me.

Okay, if you could see the wedding scene, and the surprise, and feel nothing, then you are a heartless man.
And come on, the whole bribing the kid to cover for pops-ups on the computer, honestly, if any next generation up adult came over to my house and I was having that issue, Anakin could totally milk me for more than that.
...and I have walked out of a classroom after a sitdown discussion with the teacher because the kid wrote something that he shouldn't (a very elaborate poo joke when he was in the 2nd grade in a creative writing assignment) and proceeded to laugh my behind off with him-we went and got ice cream and talked about when that kind of humor is appropriate and when it isn't.
Yes, there were parts that were cheesy. But honestly, I loved it. It was over the top on some aspects, but some it, it got dead on.
Sometimes you just need to watch something that is only working on an emotional level and isn't aiming for depth. And Love Actually plays those emotions nicely.

Awesome ep as always guys, but Dan... seriously... You loved Enchanted?? Dude... Within 5 minutes of it starting I was looking for something to burrow deep into my skull. Tsk tsk tsk... And it's not just me. My lass completely agrees.
However she is a sucker for a good romantic movie, and appreciates the work you did on the intro.
We both agree that our date non-date movie would be Serenity. It's funny, has romance, loss of romance, and reavers, giving that necessary arm-clenching for Alex.

Love Actually was pretty good, actually. I dismissed it as a chick flick, but there was nudity, if you're into that.
Also, I like how clean it looked. But maybe it's cause it was holiday time when I saw it. I felt it in my fingers and my toes.

The "Notebook" is a fine movie. I think it's more 'meh' than amazing, but whatever.
The point I was making is what "damnedeyez" said. I just don't understand the obsession with it by so many people (who...uhh.. happen to be girls...a few of whom I've dated! haha!)

So how bad is it that I am a chick and have never seen The Notebook? Do I loose my license or just get docked points?

I"m disappointed that we are only limited to 3 options on the poll.
Because, I would say I agree with Alex. I hate the idea of installing a console game, unless it gives a significant benefit, i.e. 5 GB install means loading times are cut down to a tenth of the time. Or something similar.

"The Jeff Canata effect" takes many forms.
I was in a local video store this weekend and something caught my eye:
"Oh", I say "It's The Shield, The Best Show Ever".
(Like that's actually the title!)
(And which I've never seen, but have been totally brainwashed about thanks to Jeff - and Steve's visuals :-)
Thanks guys!
Loved the show as always. Bright spot in a very busy week.
