Now it seems that Yellow Dog will continue this great partnership as the company has made it public that the newest version of Linux will come preinstalled on future versions of the PlayStation 3. Yellow Dog Linux 6.0 was just released a few days ago and the TerraSoft website revealed that Yellow Dog Linux 6.0 would be "Available from YDL.net Enhanced accounts and pre-installed with Sony PS3s -- Tuesday, February 5, 2008."

Sounds pretty awesome to me. Thoughts?

Next time, specify Yellow Dog Linux. This seems cool but I still don't want a PS3.

Honestly, the PS3 and 360 are more computer them game console. Hell, the PS3 was marketed as a computer ("you can use the PS3 as a powerful Cell equiped server with Linux!").

all game console are computers. very limited computers design to do one thing very well.
when you try shoehorn more things onto these devices you ended up with costly junk that can't do anything well. -see cellphones
no i'll keep linux on my computer and leave my game console for games

True, but my point is still correct. The Wii is an embedded system. That's why it restarts when you switch between things. The 360 is running Windows. That's not an embedded computer, it's a general computer. The PS3 is running some form of Linux at all times (IIRC). That's why you can have several things running at once. It's multitasking. The Wii does multitask (you can still receive messages when playing a game for example) but it's not like it will have a dashboard with a buddy list shown translucently while you are playing a game.
Too long, didn't read:
The 360 and PS3 are closer to PCs while the Wii is closer to the DS/DVD Player/TIVO/etc.

IDIOTS.
A link of a link of a link of a misquoted website.
YDL is NOT coming preinstalled with PS3's ... the site the link was originally taken from preinstalls YDL on PS3s and sells them so you dont need to do the install yourself. The announcement was that YDL v6 was now available, and that v6 will be the version preinstalled on hardware sold on that site.
Here is the eventual site you get back to. (http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/store/purchase.php)
Comhcinc - yes, consoles are just fancy, dedicated computers, but the PS3 is a special beast. The cell processors used in the Ps3 is the same hardware as used in IBM grid computing and blade server initiative. It provides a multiprocessor parallel to rival Cray super computers in capacity (if they are linked together correctly). YDL provide the OS that allows that access. My wife does computationally intensive text processing for her research, and uses dual processor Xeon servers (slow - 100,000 docs processed in about 7 days on a dedicated machine), and more recently a grid network in a dhared environment taking about 3 days. A cluster of PS3 could achieve similar results in faster time at a fraction of the cost.
