The big news this week is of course the iFanboy 3.0 redesign. And of course it's set as your default homepage. But let's say you could only visit ten other websites for the next year? What are your desert island bookmarks?

And you know it's the GD, baby. Topic changing and goin' off on tangents is up to you.

Don't worry. We'll get it back to booze and cupcakes eventually.

So, in other general news. I changed my avatar. Went with Sherlock Holmes. Just seemed a good fit.

I was discussing writing with my writing partner and co-producer, Jeremy. With our podcast Wormwood, we've really cemented ourselves as mystery writers (of a sort). Prior to that we wrote a film script for a neo-noir, quirky murder mystery. And the sci-fi script prior to that had a big mystery at its core. I said, "you know, I've always loved mysteries, but I never felt like I could really write one. But now I've realized that maybe that's our niche. That's cool."

He said, "Yeah, I could live with that."

So: Sherlock.

Dave,

Have you read any of the Sherlock Holmes stories? I haven't, but I thought about buying "The complete Sherlock Holmes" at Barnes and Noble for like 18 bucks. I decided against it, but I've thought about getting it several times since.

The main thing I wonder is if they are genuinely good reading or just kind of cool because they are so old and carry special weight with the Sherlock Holmes name.

I haven't read ALL the Holmes stories, but I have read a bunch, and they are good. So, I'd say it's NOT just the weight of the name and history, but solid reading on its own.

He will lie to confuse us. He will try to convince you that it does not smell inside his suit. But he will also mix lies with the truth to attack us. The attack is psychological, Damien, and powerful. So don't listen to him. Remember that - do not listen.

If you hadn't noticed by now, Elmo is rapidly on his way from being a creepy laughing toy -- and annoyingly difficult to find during the holidays -- to being a full-fledged creepy robot... and even more difficult to find during the holidays. The new Elmo Live, which Fisher-Price is announcing at Toy Fair 2008 this week, can mouth his words like a real-live Muppet, and can sit, stand and gesture as he tells stories, jokes, sings and play games. Of course, we're sure you can still tickle him and set him on fire, but the depth of interaction Elmo Live brings should surely bring the creepiness factor to whole new levels. Which is why this is potentially the best toy ever. Hopefully you can re-program him to drop kick your Pleo. Elmo Live will be out on October 14th for $60.

Several People Injured In NIU School Shooting

Several people were confirmed wounded Thursday afternoon in a shooting in a lecture hall on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, according to authorities.

A statement posted at 3:50 p.m. on the university's Web site said "several people" had been taken away by ambulance.

Dominique Broxton, 22, a student from Oak Park, said she could see two wounded students from her dorm room.

"The ambulance took away two students on the ground right outside my dorm," she said. "I don't know them. They looked bloody. Where I am right now, there are a lot of police, at least a dozen. There are police cars and trucks everywhere."

Broxton said the scene was chaotic.

"I saw a lot of confusion," she said. "Students were running. People really didn't know what was going on. There is an intercom system inside the dorm. Someone came on and stated that someone had been caught. They said they caught the shooter and that we should remain calm and stay in our rooms. I am in my room now."

Theresa Komitis, spokeswoman at Kishwaukee Medical Center in DeKalb, said as many as 15 patients were expected to be brought to the hospital and possibly other area facilities. She had no further details as of 4 p.m. There was no immediate confirmation from law enforcement or the hospital that 15 people had been injured.

The DeKalb County coroner's office said no fatalities had been immediately reported.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired on campus around 3 p.m., according to DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott.

A professor at the school said there was a person with a gun in Cole Hall, a large lecture hall in Watson Hall.

Scott said it was possible the assailant may have taken his own life.

The school posted a warning on its Web site at 3:20 p.m. that stated: "There has been a report of a possible gunman on campus. Get to a safe area and take precautions until given the all clear. Avoid the King Commons and all buildings in that vicinity." Classes have been canceled for the rest of the day, the university said.

The campus is currently on lockdown, campus police spokeswoman Pat Erickson said.

Police and fire officials were on the scene.Tribune reporter Jo Napolitano contributed.

Thanks for the birthday wishes all! Expect to see me minimally for the next day or two.

Went to a little backdoor bar downtown, had a good time.

Went to meet my mother at work, and decided I'd make my first liquor store trip so I could make my wine popsicles. Scariest thing ever. I've been in my share of liquor stores, but this one was crap. Like buying a subway token. No contact, he was beind glass, and I wasn't allowed anywhere near the merchandise. I have to browse to buy wine, so I just got vodka that I doubt I'll ever drink. It was going to be for creamsicles, but apparently I'm crazy for wanting popsicles in February in Alberta. No one is selling the molds at the moment.

Going to go out for some beer and wings with the folks after supper.

Headed to the bars with friends tomorrow.

Got the usual stack of valentines cards, that just said "Happy Birthday".

It's been a good day.

What is a backdoor bar?Basically what it sounds like. I made up the term on the spot. It's not at all advertised, and you have to go in through the backdoor. Because of this, most people assume it's a gay bar, but really it's just a fun addition to the art house/cafe out front.

My parents just took me out to the bar. They were tired, and I had school, so we went to the one here in town. I've eatten on the restaraunt side a bunch of times, and it's not great, so I wasn't expecting much. I get in, and realize that aside from a man sitting at the VLTs, and an old redneck couple quietly eatting spaghetti and drinking coffee, we're the only ones in the restaraunt or the bar. The most depressing part being that the entire place was decorated for the occasion, top to bottom.

"Didn't get the Valentines day rush?"
"No, the boss thought we'd be packed, but we've only had three or four people all night. Everyone heads to the city."

Anyways, onto the good part. My parents got a beer, and I just had a 7-Up. Biology final tomorrow, and I've drank enough today. I got IDed.

"I know you're legal, but I have to check anyways."
"Here you go."
"Oka--- Wait? It's your birthday? I thought I've seen you before."
"Nope, first timer."
"I would swear you used to come in all the time."

At which point my parents shoot eachother a look and laugh.

The entire thing was qutie the experience.

The highlight for me? They stuck four dildo's into the "Fun House" machine (you know the one with the claw, where you try and grab plush toys?). Apparently it has been raking in the dough since that nice addition.

It's Toy Fair 2008 weekend. Biggest news thus far is that Marvel Toys won't be making toys after 2009. They'll be becoming something of a consulting firm for the companies holding Marvel Licenses. So this means that the Legendary Comic Book Heroes (http://marvellegends.net/LCBH/) line is dead.

Mattel and DC announced a new line called DCU 'Infinite Heroes' that will be in the 3 3/4" scale.

Yeah, kinda like that -- except, I was thinking more like entries written BY this fictional character. Like...let's call her Lena for now.

So, I could write an entry today that has Lena saying: "Met a nice man at the market today. His name was Rick."

Now someone else could to the next entry...it could get dramatic, serious, silly, etc.

"Rick won't return my calls."

or

"Rick invited me to a meeting of the Hellfire Circle. Don't know what they do, but Rick seems very interesting in having me go."

Whatever...everyone has the user/pass and can add to the entries, steering Lena's story.

Um, I think the weekly comic review thread has become more of a "weekly comic discussion" thread over time. Not too many post "reviews" (if they ever did) anymore. Just a confined thread for a bit of back-n-forth as concerns the week's funny books.

Christ! That's crazy. There are maybe five movies that I'd pay that much for.

Agreed. Also now that there is pretty much a clear winner in the format wars I would expect Blu-Ray players to become cheaper in hopes that they will sell more movies.

I would hope so too, but would they have any incentive to since they're the only format now?

fred
02-19-2008, 02:04 PM
The incentive is that they have to make it widespread. I'm probably not the only one not willing to pay the price. DVD quality video is good enough for me.

02-19-2008, 02:15 PM
But the question is will the DVD format phased out sooner or later? Probably not anytime soon because of how much it accepted.

The incentive for Sony is increasing sales since they actually got a format to stick for once. Who out there still has a mini disk player? Bueller? Bueller?

DVDs won't be phased out until both the players and HD DVDs lower down to an exceptable price point for middle america.

When you see just as many HD DVDs at Walmart as you do regular DVDs, you know the switch is about to occur.
We have a couple years before that happens.

k33k3r

well you'll never see as many HD DVDs at walmart as regular DVDs since Toshiba pulled the plug today....

I was actually referring to High Definition DVDs as a whole, and not the HD-DVD format. Sorry.

02-19-2008, 03:32 PM
oh my bad. But you are correct this won't happen for some time also since computers are now starting to use dvd more heavily for software portability as well.

We have a couple years before that happens. That will be the point I buy a Blu-Ray player. If I get a PS3 sooner, so be it, but I won't be getting a player or hunting down a PS3. I'm not going to be one of the "originals" who pays $1000 for the model that's worth $50 in a few years.

The base Sony Blu-Ray player is around $280 right now.

That's so much! :(

This also makes me all sad because if I keep buying regular DVDs, I'll want to upgrade at some point in the future... The sooner I get HD, the sooner I can start buying DVDs... Of course, I probably SHOULD just wait until the prices for everything drops...

Oh, much more reasonable than I thought. I'll still probably wait it out. I rent a lot more than I buy, and Blu-Ray discs aren't readily available for rent (where I live anyways).

So what does this mean for the X-Box? Are they going to stop producing the HD add-ons? Switch to Blu-Ray?

I was JUST thinking that myself. Sony's PS3 is a rival for the XBox 360... I think it'll be interesting to see how this pans out...

It's an open format Sony can't stop Microsof tfrom creating an add on drive and if anything it's a boost for Sony when people buy them.

I have 2 DVD players. They play regular movies as well as movies that I burn in avi format. So, they're not completely stripped down pieces of crap. Each cost me $60.
