View Full Version : First Comic Recommendations
Okay, so I've never really read a comic book. My brother had one or two when I was little, but I never sat down and read through them, and he wasn't really into them. I just remember one of them was Batman's death.
Watching this show has peaked my interest, but I have no Idea where to start. Any recommendations for someone's first introduction into the world of comics?

I used to love the Sonic comics. Even though I didn't get into comics very much.

Caveat, I havent read a comic (one exception is the Y The Last Man series) except those for younger readers for a decade. My son and I read Teen Titans Go, Justice League, and the Legion of Super Heroes. He's only 6 though.
Depends on your taste, age, etc.
My top general recommendation would be
The Dark Knight Returns. But again, the art may put you off.
The Watchmen. Skip the pirate subplot
Invincible (another exception)
The first Preacher trade, I think the title is Comin' Home to Texas or something is a good choice. unless your 13 and a christian fundamentalist.
Green Arrow the Longbow Hunters
I enjoyed several of the Elseworlds books from DC. Red Son, Superman is discovered on a Soviet collective was pretty good.
My most offbeat recommendation would be the Justice League International series from the late '80's. The series had a screwball sense of humor that I really enjoyed and you can probably round these up in a bargain bin at your local shop. If you have any left, several of the shops in my area closed.

Above all Preacher, it's the best thing out there, then Watchmen, The Invisibles if you can find it in print, Hellblazer, DMZ, Tankgirl, Marshal Law
These are all good titles that are fairly friendly if you don't have a huge gackground in the Marvel and DC Super Heroes.

Y: The Last Man and Runaways if you're looking for something outside the typical super heroes. Also if you're just getting into comics I highly recommend the ultimate marvel universe, as there is way less back story to get acquainted with, not to mention for the most part they are incredibly well written and entertaining to boot.

Depends what you're into...I'd categorize just by Superhero and non-Superhero because I don't know what you're looking for...
Also ntoe that all the ones I mention you can easily buy in trade paperback format if it is an ongoing, or it is a OGN (original graphic novel) that you can buy...no back issue hunting required!
Superhero:
Invincible
Batman: Year One
Batman: Dark Knight Returns
Superman for All Season
Spider-Man: Blue
Hulk: Grey
The Ultimates/The Ultimates 2
Daredevil (start with the one by Kevin Smith and go up to the current ones)
Captain America (look for the current ones written by Ed Brubaker...if you go into your local shop and ask for the Brubaker Captain America's and they'll know)
Ultimate Spider-Man
Wanted (kind of Superhero...)
Watchmen
Non-Superhero:
Y: The Last Man
Ex Machine
Box Office Poison
Blankets
Tricked
DMZ
Sleeper
Preacher
Alan Moore's Swamp Thing
Hellblazer
Fables
The Walking Dead
Powers
Jinx
Goldfish
Fire
Torso
Queen & Country
WhiteOut

If you head to the iFanboy forums here at Rev 3, we have a bit of a New/Returning to Comics thread going that's certainly worth a look.
Also, Whitney Matheson of the blog Pop Candy is doing a four part series on how to get into comics, with a new section each Wednesday. Last Wednesday was part one (25 Essential Graphic Novels) and part two goes up tomorrow. While some of it should be chalked up to taste, there's a lot of solid picks there.
Check it out here. (http://blogs.usatoday.com/popcandy/2008/02/part-one-the-es.html)

I'd suggest going to the DC and Marvel websites and reading the first issues for free of the above mentioned titles to get a feel for the kinds of comics you like. That's how I chose Preacher and Y The Last Man as the first comics I wanted to read.

I'm going to ask a question to really show how lost I am about comics...
So once Y: The Last Man's final issue is released...then there will be a trade, right? How long does that take? Should I search out all the old issues or just wait for the trade?

Trades are just collections of multiple issues, as for Y the last man, there are already 9 trades available with a tenth on the way now that the series has ended. It usually takes a few months for the trades to become available. Anyway if you want more information wikipedia has a pretty extensive entry on the topic that can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_paperback_(comics)

I see, I thought they always waited for the end of a series to do a trade.
I guess I can wait the few months and get the entire Y:The Last Man collection, as I'm still working on Watchmen.
Thanks for the info. :)
Thanks for all the recommenadations.

- I'll definitely remember to do a search next time. Don't think you're a jerk, I normally feel the same way. <bangs head against table>
I definitely check out the Marvel Ultimate Universe. It sounds interesting and like I could get into it. Also thanks for the info on other places/sites to look at for first time readers.
