I drive a 2005 Lexus RX330. The mpg is horrible, it's only about 20.
I was really happy to get it as a high school graduation present (my dad really spoiled me) but after I graduate from college (where I am now self sufficient and don't want to mooch off my dad), I will buy my own car... preferably something that's fuel efficient. Any suggestions? I can only think of a Prius at the moment.

Why stop there? My sister-in-law got a car for college graduation and owned it for darn near eight years. It wasn't until she had her second kid and couldn't fit them in it anymore. I don't think you'll have the problem with the that Lexus. If you're worried about saving the planet, just drive less.

96 Ford Ranger...I hate that f'ing truck. The wife and I bought my moms 2002 honda accord. Thats a pretty nice vehicle, but the girl took it for her own. Probably best...Dad works for Chrysler so I feel bad unless I'm fighting the good fight and buying Chrysler/Dodge. I'd love to get one of the 2008 Dodge Caliber but I'll probably drive that damn Ford until it dies...then the wife will probably get the new vehicle and I'll get the Honda.

Currently drive an '01 Chrysler Sebring Sedan. 2.7L V6, 23MPG. nudging 120000 miles. Great commuter car.
There might be a move happening to colder (MUCH COLDER) climes soon though (center of the mitten), so I suspect we might be ditching the sedan for a 4x4 crossover, or an AWD sedan.
Hmmmm. I wonder if I can convince SWMBO that an Audi TT (3.2) or A5 might be in our future.

This is a design flaw. Not a flaw with the materials. They make Indy cars out of the same stuff and people walk-away from the most horrible crashes. They're using lighter materials in order to save fuel. But, they're not following that-up with safety design. It probably reaches minimum standards.

Any suggestions? I can only think of a Prius at the moment.
That depends. I'm in a similar situation, except my dad gave me the Honda I drive right now, which was his old business car. Not quite a Lexus, but I still wish I could have learned the value of a dollar a little better.
When you graduate, how much do you think you'll be making? For me, I think that after I work a couple of years I should have no problem affording something in the $30k range, but I'm pretty good with saving my money. So I was thinking of a Cadillac CTS, Acura TL, Buick LaCrosse/Lucerne, BMW 3-series, Mercedes C-Class, or Lincoln MKZ. They're all beautiful cars, though it doesn't sound like that's what you're looking for if you're looking at a Prius.
If you want something really fuel efficient, obviously a Prius will do the trick. But if you want something with a bit more guts (my roommate last year drove an '06 Prius, and it was WEAK), I'd also take a look at the Mazda 3/6, Chevy Cobalt/Pontiac G5/G6, or Ford Focus (even though it is really ugly), Toyota Corolla (boring, but sips gas). All of these cars will get you at around the 30mpg overall range, assuming you get the 4-cyl engines (except for the 2.3L 4-cyl's in the Mazdas). My personal favorite of these are the Mazdas. They're really nice cars, and fun to drive too. I love driving my stepmom's 3. The Cobalt/G5 is supposed to be fantastic as well. Or, if you want to look more toward the $20k+ range, you can't go wrong on the Mercury Mulan. I've yet to see anything bad about it.

My old 1999.5 would have to run at over 4000 RPM to get to 90. So engine noise was a factor. It was still smooth until about 100MPH, thats when it would start to get floaty. I've not gotten my new one that fast...YET. ;)
