I'm in the market to buy a Nintendo Wii (been a few days) and I was wondering how their multiplayer online mode is like?
Is it more like XBL or PS3? Also what games are great for online? I probably won't be playing with a group of friends often, so I want to make sure that I'll have an equally fun experience online.
Also, is there any game that has matchmaking similar to Halo 3 where you can level up?

I do hope you're..uh..kidding. Wii's online is very much behind the times, or rather, very restrictive.
One of the biggest complaints is the use of friends codes. It's a 16 digit number that you need to exchange with people if you want to add them as a friend, or play with someone online. It sucks because well, it's 16 numbers. Putting them in in a pain in the ass, and there's no online component where you can just copy and paste it. Plus, as I understand, like in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, some games will have it's own friends code separate from the Wii console.
As for online games for the Wii, there aren't too many worthwhile ones. Mario Strikers Charged, I think, was the first game to utilize Wii online functionality. You also got Pokemon Stadium, Guitar Hero 3 and coming soon, Brawl. I'm sure there's more, but I haven't really caught up with the online side of Wii.
If you want the best experience online on the Wii, I honestly think that SSBB will be the best game for that. You can play anonymously with strangers, but there's no real communication, so you can't befriend anyone after playing a game with them(as far as I understand). Guitar Hero might be a good choice if you don't have it yet. Apparently, you can play that with strangers as well.
Anyhow, Wii isn't a great system for online play. It's a good system though when you're with friends, or if you want something different.

Thanks. Well if online isn't that great, do you think that it'll still be fun to play offline? The main reasons why I want a Wii is to play Mario Galaxy, SSBB, those virtual console games, and on occasion, play wii sports and wii play with a couple of friends.

Kinda funny that the Wii's strength is playing with other people and its online experience is practically none existence and what is there is the worst on the market. I bought the Wii with the promise of persistant worlds that your Wii would log into while you slept and stuff that was interesting and new.
Little disappointed in this system to be honest. Well, how its being handled i guess i should say.

Wait for Brawl.
That game will kickass online.
Medal of Honor heroes 2 does 32 players online and EA did a great job I have to admit with their online games for Wii and it ditches the whole FC thing period I wish Nintendo at least did something as EA did..miles better than the FC thing.
As for lack of voice chat that bothers me none as I can live without the "fuck you" and jerks screaming in the mic.
VC is great Internet channel is great but yeah the online play on Nintendo's part is lacking a bit overall.

Wii has online? I mean, other than swapping text messages and Miis.

Expect to see the Wii's online capabilities being expanded over the next year. So far there aren't a whole lot of games that have online play and you can probably expect that to be the norm, but there will certainly be online leaderboards, plus Wiiware and level trading in games. If online gaming is a priority the Wii isn't the console to buy, but there's certainly fun to be had with some of the games out there at the moment.
