I just recently got back into buying vinyl (after purchasing an old player off ebay), and I was wondering if there are any recommendations for good records. Basically I'm interested in things that are "supposed" to be heard on vinyl (in my mind anyway) like classic rock, jazz, and classical, although I'm not entirely averse to newer music. I'm also going to visit the parental unit this weekend, and I plan to liberate some records from wherever they've been hiding out for the last 20-odd years, <bitter>assuming Mom didn't give them away like all those Transformers</bitter>. I remember I have MJ's Thriller and Off the Wall and some 45 singles like George Michael's Monkey and Fresh Prince's Parents Just Don't Understand (hey, I was 13).

most (if not all) albums are still produced on vinyl. records have a better low frequnice responsive than cds so your "bass" sound better.

what type of player did you buy?

Oh, just an old Califone type like they used to have in schools (although it hasn't arrived yet from the seller so here's to hoping that it actually works). I figure if this is something I want to pursue, I can upgrade later. I admit that much of my recent fascination is nostalgia-related so it may pass quickly, in which case I haven't plunked down wads of cash. (I have a few 50¢ thrift-store records to try out before attempting to play something "good".)

Most of the vinyl i have is from the last 10 years or so so I can't really suggest any older stuff that you're looking for. I would like to get some ELO on vinyl because I'm starting to get into them.

I think Elliott Smith stuff sounds a lot better to me when I play it on vinyl. They're finally reprinting XO and Figure 8 this month. I've seen originals of those go for up to $150 on ebay.

I'm also thinking about getting the new Vampire Weekend album on vinyl (already have the CD) because I've been listening to it nonstop for the past 3 weeks.

i know you don't want to hear this but even if it does work i wouldn't use it. bad players can mess up records. if you want to go cheap(well comparelty cheap) look for some thing like this (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gem-Sound-GTUSB-USB-Turntable?sku=801625).

My favorite records are:

The Smiths - "Meat Is Murder"
The Velvet Underground and Nico - "The Velvet Underground and Nico"
Fugazi - "Fugazi EP"

I haven't been able to listen to my turntable in a while as I can't get a mixer and all it has are phono outputs, but I <3 me some vinyl :(

I have a bunch of The Lettermen from the early 60's, and I love it.

Awesome recommendations. Thanks! I've pretty much just been listening to Ella Fitzgerald's Ella Swings Lightly, Nat King Cole's Unforgettable, and Carole King's Tapestry. And Mahalia Jackson's You'll Never Walk Alone that I got on eBay should be arriving this week :) Payday's on Friday so I'm sure I'll be cruisin' eBay again soon.

As long as you have a decent system (doesn't have to be amazing, just good), setup properly, most anything is going to sound better on vinyl. I say buy the vinyl THEN pirate it if you want a digital version. You still paid for the music and technically, due to the "analog whole", you aren't really doing anything illegal since you could have just as easily ripped it from the vinyl (but let's not debate this legality here).

As for my personal suggestions (to start with):
Beatles - Abbey Road,
AC/DC - Back in Black,
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium (Was remastered specifically for vinyl after the initial release.),
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow,
Grandaddy - Sophtware Slump,
The Clash - London Calling

So where do you all buy all these vinyl's. Online only, or have you found music stores that still sell them?

I find mine at a couple of local stores. If they don't have it, they can order it. If you're in LA or SF Amoeba Records (http://www.amoebarecords.com/) is a music lovers paradise. For online, Elusive Disc (http://www.elusivedisc.com/) is great. Also, if you know how the spot a record that's not scratched to hell and you don't mind covers that are less than perfect, flea markets are a good place for older stuff pretty cheap.

I get most of my vinyl at local record shops on Whyte Ave in Edmonton. If you are into punk you can get a lot of good vinyl at www.interpunk.com. Can anyone recommend any other online stores that sell vinyl besides ebay?

It's super new, which you said you weren't really into, but Radiohead's 'In Rainbows' is a brilliant album, released in limited quantities on vinyl. If you can find it, buy it.

I get many of mine from www.insound.com though their prices can sometimes be a little high. Though usually arrive very quickly as well.
